Unions respond: “Reform are no friends of working people”

Reform — The trade unions have hit back against Farage’s recent pitiful appeal to try to bring the UK labour movement over to the far-right. Quite unsurprisingly, they’ve seen through his ridiculous claim that: Reform is now the party of workers. Farage also invited unions to apply for affiliation, and welcomed union leadership to attend the party conference. However, those same leaders have now told him where to shove it in reply. ‘Let’s be crystal clear’ On 8 June, the Times published an interview with Nigel Farage, trying to lure trade unions into affiliation with Reform UK. The fascist rag highlighted plummeting support for Starmer’s Labour among union members — hardly surprising in itself. However, that drop was accompanied by growing support among the membership base for Reform UK. Unfortunately for Farage, the unions themselves haven’t conveniently forgotten all the time his party have spent bashing workers’ rights. Nor, for that matter, are they in the mood to overlook the fact that Reform UK rests firmly in the pocket of big business. Responding to the Reform leader’s two-faced appeal, Trades Union Congress (TUC) general secretary Paul Nowak said: Let’s be crystal clear: Reform are no friends of working people. If they were, they wouldn’t be planning to rip up workers’ rights like day one sick pay and protection from fire and rehire and zero-hours contracts. And they wouldn’t have a leader who backs privatising the NHS. Add to that Reform’s repeated calls to scrap the Equality Act — the foundation stone of protections from discrimination in the workplace. Reform cosplaying as the workers’ friend Nowak continued: Reform can cosplay as champions of workers all they like. But the reality is they’re bankrolled by corporate interests and crypto billionaires who want the rules rigged even further in favour of the rich and powerful, not working people. And let’s not forget many of their leading voices have shown contempt for trade unions – the very organisations that won the rights and protections they want to strip away. Reform will say whatever they think it takes to win votes. But their record – and their agenda – tells the real story. The TUC highlighted that, just last year, Farage boasted that Reform would “go to war” with “leftwing teaching unions”. He even went so far as to accuse union members of: poisoning the minds of young people, not just against Reform, but against everything this country has ever stood for. We at the Canaryprefer the term ‘history lessons‘. ‘A threat to the working class’ Of course, it wasn’t just the TUC that shut the door in Farage’s smug face. Even those that have — with good cause — cut down on their affiliation with Labour gave short shrift to Reform. Unite general secretary Sharon Graham, for instance, said: If I had a pound for every politician who said they are the party of workers I’d be a rich woman. Reform have shown absolutely no evidence that they are friends of workers. Not signing up to the Employment Rights Act, inferring privatisation of the NHS and threatening local authority pensions seems the exact opposite. What needs to happen now is for the Labour party to stop dithering and be the voice of workers. A little less conversation – a little more action. Likewise, the Fire Brigades Union recognised the Reform leader for the Thatcherite waste of space that he is. The spokesperson added that: Firefighters and other workers will see this ludicrous stunt for what it is by a party led by multimillionaires that is a threat to the working class. The same also goes for the Transport Salaried Staffs’ Association. General secretary Maryam Eslamdoust branded Farage’s invite as a “desperate gimmick” that wouldn’t succeed in conning her organisation’s members. Reform ‘Don’t believe in basic rights’ Of course, Labour’s closer allies in Unison also gave Farage the middle finger. Andrea Egan, the union’s general secretary, said: It’s a con to think Nigel Farage and his rich cronies are interested in unions for anything but cold, hard cash. They don’t believe in basic rights or fair pay and consistently voted against every measure to improve them. Gary Smith, GMB’s general secretary, highlighted the fact that Reform is a refuge for Tory turncoats — hardly the workers’ friend. Speaking to the Guardian, he stated that: Mr Farage and his Reform MPs say one thing to workers and do another. They voted against sick pay and other essential safeguards. They even want to prevent people organising to make work better at places like Amazon. We see them for what they are – rebadged Tories after union members’ basic rights. The unions stand together However, the most damning vote of no-confidence of all was probably that from Community. The union represents numerous different trades, including a significant share of UK steelworkers. Not to be taken in, Community’s assistant general secretary, Alasdair McDiarmid, simply said: The Reform party has consistently voted against the interests of working-class people while under his leadership. It is clear Farage will say whatever it takes to win votes, but workers will see through his misrepresentations. Reform UK recently made a big song and dance about offering a ‘redress scheme’ for steelworkers’ pensions in an attempted appeal to a tokenised symbol of British industry. However, what far-right scum like Farage and his cronies don’t understand — what they can’t understand — is the ‘union’ part of trade unions. Reform don’t get to play divide-and-conquer with worker’s rights, trying to woo steelworkers with one hand whilst bashing teachers with the other. The labour movement stands together — and it stands firmly opposed to Farage, Reform, and the rest of the UK’s fascist wannabes. He added: Reform now runs councils that employ tens of thousands of unionised workers: bin men and women, social workers, care staff, school support workers. Unlike the snobbish Tories of old, we will never treat organised labour with contempt. If you represent working people in this country, my door is open. Reuters: Trump says he might not renew USMCA

In this instance, I agree with the affectation he has decided to cosplay for entirely different reasons against the advice of all of his corporate masters. When you buy from a foreign country what can be made in your country, you are directly causing the loss of well-paid jobs in your country, and aiding the exploitation of a developing country (statistically.) There’s a reason China has done so well while the entirety of the western world has become worse for the average inhabitant. Every time a job is outsourced, every time you buy that foreign thing that could’ve been made at home, you are directly enriching another country and that money will never be seen in your country ever again. You do that enough times and hey, you have stretches of countryside full of small ghost towns that decayed after the employer had to shut down, and no social mobility.

Ansbach’s Set looks so cool. I also never seriously used the Obsidian Lamina. You get it after Consort Radahn and beating him is usually one of the last things I do. If I were to do this cosplay run, I wouldn’t immediately cave Varre’s skull in, but instead do the invasion in Mohgwyn Palace. More thematic that way.

So I made a joke a Reddit and got again a ban for excouraging violence. Their automoderation is just a broken piece of shit. I never encourage violence, nor would anyone with half a brain interpret it that way. I’m so fucking tired of walking on egg shells on the internet these days. And it’s not just Reddit. Pretty much any social media feels like it’s cosplaying as 1984 Big Brother. I 'm tired of all the selfsensoring like pdf or s*x. Can we get back to being treated as adults please.

[Song of the Day] Virtual Sky by The Sixth Lie

I suppose it’s high time I post a song by the band whose logo I’m using in my avatar. They aren’t my favourite band (though, they’re up there), I just really like the design and the colour. I first heard The Sixth Lie in the anime series A Certain Scientific Accelerator to which they licensed their song Shadow is the Light and I love that song, but never thought to look up their other songs. I started looking at their other songs about two years ago, and liked what I heard, so I followed them (MusicHarbour, it’s an app that notifies you of new releases by artists you follow). Somewhat on a tangent that I will connect back with momentarily, my wife bought a Nintendo Switch, and a game I’d only heard bad things about, Animal Crossing. I thought it was a dumbed down version of Harvest Moon/Stardew Valley for little kids. (I’m not saying it’s not, but that’s also rude and unfair.) My game was Breath of the Wild. I dropped Breath of the Wild for being too hard, and she dropped Animal Crossing because it didn’t engage her. Once I realised I could not advance the story as player 2, we agreed to start a new island with me as player one. But she never played it, so I started a third island with me as player one, and she never joined it. Sad face dot tif. Anyway, after playing Animal Crossing for a couple months, having rolled the credits and gotten into the post-game content, The Sixth Lie released a new song. This one. And I thought, compared with the other songs they did, it sounded different. Playing Animal Crossing and listening to this song made a connection in my mind. Virtual Sky sounds like it’s sang by the Jack Russel terrier character, K.K. Slider, to some extent, and if you listen to the lyrics, it’s… kind of about Animal Crossing. He’s talking about bugs and living in a virtual world. It could be other things but it seemed pretty clear to me that there was some connection. Or maybe I was stretching. But it was cool to me! About a month later, they released a second version of Virtual Sky, this time 100% in English. The first one is in both English and Japanese. Also, this time around, his vocals are a little clearer; he sounds less like the canine musician from the game. Yes, I’ve asked K.K. Slider to play Virtual Sky. He won’t do it. (K.K. Slider visits your island every Saturday, and after 6pm local time, he will take requests, and you have to type the name of the song in, which means you have to know the names of his songs. You can also tell him your mood and he’ll pick one at random from that list. But there are a few he will never play unless you ask by name, and if you ask for those by name, he will call you out on being a cheater (he will say you have a code book). If he doesn’t know the song (you spelled it wrong or you made up something he doesn’t know), he just picks a random song. And whatever song he plays first each Saturday evening, he gives you a copy of that you can play on speakers or stereos or other sound-producing objects in the game. But about the song: the single title implies it’s from an album called “Sounds From a Dreamt Future.” That caption appears on six singles released one a month for the first six months of 2025. But this album never came out, and here we are a year after the last one came out. You could collect the songs and their English versions, and the Japanese version as well of Wonderland (originally in Hindi) and have 11 songs, which makes an album, but it would be repetitive and it would not be a real album. Anyway, one or two of the songs are good. The rest are amazing. Virtual Sky isn’t even the best one; that would be Time Capsule, but I have far less to say about that one. Absolute masterpiece though. Edit: Side note, addendum, tangent, whatever. I’ve since began cosplaying Tom Nook. I have the official shirt, I have raccoon ears, I have a decent tail (not a very lore accurate one, but it’s “close enough”), and I have a Bells bag my wife crocheted and filled with actual bells (so it rings when I shake it). I have an old Android phone I’ve slapped an Animal Crossing case on, and it runs Nova Launcher Prime with an Animal Crossing theme I put together, so basically I have a NookPhone (like in the game). And it has a playlist of my favourite Animal Crossing songs on it, so when I walk around, it’s playing Animal Crossing music. There’s also a whole bunch of “KK Slider cover” type songs on YouTube which are regular songs but tweaked to sound like KK Slider is performing them. I have some of those up there. And, of course, Virtual Sky is on that playlist.

'Gay walking speed' may have unexpected health benefits, experts say

I hope not. I usually walk quickly, with purpose. I hate these types that can best be described as “waddling”. Just like a sloth cosplaying as a duck. And somehow they manage to just stand in doorways, and block isles. Meanwhile I’m in my head thinking “HEY FUCKFACE!!! MOVE YOUR FUCKING ASS!!!” And then I wonder if I might have anger management issues. Then I realized I haven’t punched anyone in a really long time, so that’s close enough to managed anger. So that means these wastes of space really are that annoying to walk behind. Shopping doesn’t have to take 2 hours. You can be in and out in like 10 minutes. You just gotta know what you’re buying, and where it is. But then these types just…exist. So I just want everyone to know, that if you could lose a race to a snail, I want you to know that everyone hates you. If you’re going to walk this slow, just get a mobility scooter. Maybe you’ll be faster on wheels. Which means out of my way faster. And really, that’s the ultimate goal here, right? Getting everyone out of my way. I think that’s a goal everyone should work towards. That, and finding someone willing to bring me cheese regularly. I really like cheese. But also, I’m not gay. I had no idea speed was gay? Then again, I don’t notice these things. I’m always the last to know if someone is gay. I didn’t realize Richard Simmons was gay until 1995. I got made fun of for not knowing. And that’s how I found out.

iOS 27 Supports iPhone 11 and Newer, Says Apple

Clarification: The iPhone 11 came out in 2019. The Samsung equivalent is the Galaxy S10. My daily driver is an iPhone 16 Pro Max, but I also have a Galaxy S10. It has a better keyboard than the iPhone (it doesn’t autocorrect common words to names of people I’ve never met, for example), and better home screen customisations, but it hasn’t seen an update in years. I mainly use it as a cosplay prop — from the case to the home screen, it’s designed to look like the NookPhone from Animal Crossing: New Horizons. But it also has a memory card slot, and I keep an offline copy of my music on that. So while I do have Apple Music on it (cleverly rebadged as “Nook Music”), I also have an offline collection and Poweramp. I would not be too upset to use it in 2026. So I imagine an iPhone 11, especially an 11 Pro, would perform even better.

Everlane, Shein, and the myth of sustainable fashion

As a college sophomore with an internet connection during the Obama era, I was instantly intrigued by the promise of the new direct-to-consumer clothing brand Everlane. I don’t remember how or when I found out about the fashion startup exactly; I just remember getting the emails. Launched around 2011 with venture capital funding, Everlane styled itself in a sort-of minimalist, pro-consumer ethos. The idea was simple: sell beautiful clothing made really well — so-called “modern basics” — at reasonable prices. The company made it all the more enticing by amping up the exclusivity factor; like the early days of Gmail, you needed an invitation to shop. By forgoing brick-and-mortar stores, Everlane, co-founded by Michael Preysman, advertised itself as cutting out the middleman and allowing the consumer to reap the benefits. Initially, Everlane promised its wares — it started with boxy T-shirts — would always be priced at less than $100. The company embodied a decidedly millennial spirit: the idea that change was not only possible, but possible via simply buying better things. I spent hours pouring over the brand’s email marketing and clothing collections. I got off the waitlist in the fall of 2011 (“You’re one of the first in the door!”, the email read), but for months, I just browsed. Even at their heavily discounted prices, I wondered if $25 was too much to pay for a pocket tee, when Urban Outfitters was just down the street — or if the quality of a $15 box-cut tee would hold up, especially if I couldn’t see or touch it before buying. In the early days, by Preysman’s own assessment, Everlane was operating almost as more of a branding exercise. “I have seen, candidly with Everlane, we’ve had periods where we had okay product when we launched, and the brand carried all the weight,” he told a business podcast in 2024. “Then we had great products, and we had really high engagement.” From the author’s email inbox. Frida Garza / Grist Indeed, over time, the company’s aesthetic and business model shifted as it grew in popularity and reach, and its price point changed with it. In 2017, Everlane announced that its first brick-and-mortar store would open in New York City, where shoppers can still browse $148 jeans and $268 cashmere sweaters today. Its mission also became more ambitious: Everlane announced plans in 2021 to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. The company sought to “empower people to live their best lives with the least impact on the planet — and leave the apparel industry cleaner than we found it.” In its latest sustainability report, Everlane stated the company has reduced Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions by 60 percent since 2019, and reduced per-product carbon emissions by 42 percent. The brand has signaled its commitment to the planet in other ways throughout the years, including its focus on using certified organic cotton and attempting to eliminate virgin plastic from its supply chain. Additionally, the company has taken the public inside its factories, publishing glossy-looking photos from its facilities in Vietnam, China, Italy, and other countries and tracking which ones use renewable energy and pay living wages. For these and other reasons, the company mystified consumers last week, when it was sold to the e-commerce giant Shein, which ranked as the biggest polluter in fast fashion last year. Shein offers clothing, jewelry, home goods, and accessories, all for sometimes shockingly cheap prices — the true cost of which is its carbon-intensive supply chain. The sale was orchestrated by L Catterton, the company’s majority owner, according to fashion reporter Laura Sherman who broke the story. (Preysman, who stepped down as CEO in 2022, wrote on LinkedIn that he “found out at the same time as everyone,” and has since announced he would launch another Everlane-esque business with no venture capital or private equity money.) Fashion magazines balked, asking if Everlane’s acquisition spells the end of the fashion industry’s sustainability aspirations writ-large. But the sale of Everlane to this particular buyer should turn the inquiry around: Of what use are sustainability goals in the face of hyper-consumerism? Put another way: Was it ever the case that simply buying (more) different things would ever yield a more liveable planet? Consumers, it seems, only want to shop sustainably if it means they can, in fact, keep shopping: A study from 2025 found that even when shoppers are buying secondhand fashion, they’re also still buying new clothes. The companies’ offerings are, of course, different: Preysman famously told the New Yorker magazine, “You do not get laid in Everlane.” Shein, meanwhile, is a one-stop shop for plunging necklines, revealing cut-outs, sheer fabrics, and ruffles on ruffles. And the methods are different, too: Shein is less of a fashion brand and more of an everything store — a no-man’s land of AI-powered nanotrends — akin to Amazon or Temu. Hop on over to the Shein website and you can just as easily find a halter top that makes you look like a ladybug or a pair of oversized jorts or buckets of slime. But, for all the hoopla around the acquisition, there are glimpses of Shein’s story in Everlane’s initial pitch, now adjusted for a new generation of shoppers accustomed to ultra-convenience. They were both, at one point, online-only stores offering clothes people wanted at seemingly unbeatable prices. And Shein has also apparently taken pages out of Everlane’s marketing playbook, by offering limited glimpses into its factories — albeit, heavily filtered through its influencer-fueled PR machine. In 2023, the platform invited a group of content creators on an all-expenses-paid trip to tour its facilities in Guangzhou, China. One influencer documented the visit in a video, noting that at least one worker was “surprised” about the rumors that Shein factories’ poor working conditions. (The video has since been deleted.) The publicity move was immediately met with criticism for attempting to sanitize Shein’s reputation. Everlane’s store in San Francisco. But the question around whether the fashion world can ever truly become sustainable is something of a red herring, and even Preysman knows this — or knew it, at one point. “The word sustainability has been completely greenwashed,” he told Forbes in 2021. He went on: “Show me a fashion brand that claims it is sustainable, and I will show you a fashion brand that is not honest. One can be ‘more sustainable’ but nothing is truly sustainable.” In the end, the future of fashion retail relies on consumers buying more clothes. I did eventually buy multiple things from Everlane: a canvas backpack that held up really nicely for years; a silk button-down I wore just as much to graduate school classes as I did on vacation. I bought a pair of bootcut jeans after a long, painstaking discussion with a salesperson and a third woman in the dressing room who butted into the conversation. But I never shop at the Everlane store or website anymore, and that’s because I don’t have to — the thrift stores of New York City are filled with the brand’s clothes. It’s not the only one: On the racks at Goodwill, I can always dependably find at least one Shein top these days. Anonymous right-wing accounts are attacking Restore Britain

Restore Britain is a breakaway party of Reform UK which exists because the latter wasn’t right-wing enough. Reform has largely just ignored its rival, but this changed in late May when it turned out Restore could stop them from winning the Makerfield by-election. An interesting development since then is that the legions of anonymous Twitter/X accounts seem to have turned on Restore. The question is whether these accounts are actually British, or if they’re foreign users trying to game Twitter’s algorithm? Another account, using an image of President Donald Trump in a tuxedo and using the name “MAGA Scope” with an American flag emoji, was found to have been started in Nigeria in 2024. In terms of the UK, the Bureau of Investigative Journalism reported on a man who shared AI slop videos of Keir Starmer dressed as a Muslim. Surprisingly, this particular account holder turned out to be “a devout Muslim man living in Pakistan”. The Bureau added: This man, who we are not naming for his own safety, runs successful accounts pushing Islamophobic AI slop to UK audiences. Videos shared by just one of his Facebook pages had been viewed millions of times and he told us in an interview he earned around $1,500 a month from that page alone. While it sounds bizarre that Black and Brown people could be driving white supremacy in the UK, you have to remember: These people don’t have to worry about racism in a foreign country. Our uneven and individualistic global system guarantees there will always be people out there doing anything they can to get ahead. In America, the reformed influencer Ashley St. Clair revealed that her former right-wing bedfellows get paid to coordinate their messaging. I should note that this method of verifying where someone is from isn’t foolproof. I actually have the exclamation point on my account, which is almost certainly because I use a VPN sometimes. Because – let’s be clear – we’re not pointing this stuff out because we’d prefer Restore Britain to Reform UK. As much as these accounts pretend otherwise, they’re both the same party, and that party is the Tories. Another thing to note is that while there’s a deluge of anonymous accounts blasting Restore right now, they’re not all leaning that way. The ‘Basil the Great’ account we shared at the top supports Restore and is also of questionable origin. The legions of anonymous accounts attacking Restore Britain could be shy Brits; they could be foreign users; they could be AI; they could be all manner of things. The issue is we simply don’t know, and many people don’t care to check. It’s hard to say exactly how we solve this problem. Do we want to end anonymity online? Almost certainly not, but if these accounts are receiving money to push political messaging, it might not be ridiculous to make them display the actual country they’re posting from at least. In the long term, the only way to prevent people from cheating the system is to create a system which doesn’t need to be cheated. If we all lived roughly equal lives, people wouldn’t be scrabbling to get ahead. In the meantime, be careful who you trust.
