Roblox is not age-restricted?
Roblox has been trying to move away from being a game for kids, and more towards all ages. Specifically, by verifying with their third party service and your ID (kind of creepy, but probably the only real way to still remain coppa compliant), you can access more mature experiences and use voice chat. And they’re predicting that online daters will proceed to evolve into getting actual real life relationships.
My daughter went through a phase where she REALLY wanted to play Roblox. Probably word of mouth from school. I’m not THAT old (only mid 30’s) but I didn’t really understand the concept of Roblox or how you buy more games. That probably led to me telling her no. Glad I stuck to my gut.
Total tangent but you reminded me of it by mentioning Ubi and EA. It was the greatest insult when Bethesda announced their plans to create a paid-mod marketplace. Let alone the logistics of it, the gall they had, to assume that modding needed or wanted any kind of profit motive was just absurd. I used to create custom textures, models, and maps for SWBF2 way back in the day, and the Gametoast community would never had dared to charge people for access to their work. If I ever dreamed of getting paid to create game content, that dream was getting hired by the company whose game I was modding, not being a cog in some kafka-esque Gig Economy nightmare. I can’t even fathom Roblox at this point. EDIT: It was Valve, not Bethesda. I had it confused since Skyrim was their test balloon.
Damn, I kinda wanted one until I realized it was Roblox
Trouble is, most of the other games out there for kids are the same thing as the roblox games, and many of them cost money upfront, then sell the kids on skins, and tiny game functions just like roblox games. It’s hard to find suitable games for kids, and takes a ton of energy. I have gotten my kids into satisfactory, raft, and games like that. But my youngest keeps coming back to the grinders which all have pay to win. Good games are just not as profitable.
what this means is that if you ever have to use self defense you’d better also play several rounds of roblox after it’s actually an extremely dangerous precedent they’re setting. If you have nothing to lose, why not buy roblox premium?
I was digging a little and just wanted to add a few links: https://www.themirror.space/ and https://github.com/the-mirror-gdp/the-mirror It looks like a competitor to both Roblox but also meta and vrchat, and even mindcraft. Vrchat is free i think, but they own the data. I see they’ve adapted the leading OS game engine, Godot, which also let’s our personal AI simulate the real world in real time. I wasn’t particularly happy with this roadmap tho: ‘(Future) Marketplace: Easily monetize your games, 3D models, audio assets, and more with one-time purchases or RevShare.’ It doesn’t take long to convert the project into some shitcoin ‘adventure’ where nothing is done without coin incentives and people behave like it’s all a business.
Jesus fucking Christ I hate this stupid everything app metaverse bullshit. Every bougie wants to be the one to do it and none of them do it well! Overambitious idiots ruining things that were perfectly fine (even if Roblox could be called that) by chasing trends and current fads (:kelly:) that just pinky promise them more money, power, and influence.
So what if it was no different than now? Nothing stopping adults from playing Roblox now, but we know why they are there
