The fiber very likely has its’ own waterproof sleeve and is likely to be fine, but I would fix it right, if I had the means, i.e. replace the conduit. Wait and hear what the provider says.
Abstract Coping with prolonged periods of low availability of wind and solar power, also referred to as variable renewable energy droughts or “Dunkelflaute”, emerges as a key challenge for realizing decarbonized energy systems based on renewable energy. Here we investigate the role of long-duration electricity storage and geographical balancing through transmission in dealing with such events in Europe, combining a time series analysis of renewable availability with power sector modeling of 35 historical weather years. We find that extreme droughts define long-duration storage operation and investment. Assuming policy-relevant interconnection, the least-cost system in our model capable of coping with the most extreme event requires 351 terawatt hours long-duration storage capacity, corresponding to 7% of yearly European electricity demand. While nuclear power can partially reduce storage needs, the storage-mitigating effect of fossil backup plants in combination with carbon removal is limited. Policymakers and system planners should prepare for a rapid expansion of long-duration storage to safeguard the renewable energy transition in Europe.

If it needs to collapse to get into the space, how do you get it out once it is full of water?

Yep, if they actually had to clean up their messes a lot of things would have reflected their true costs and we probably would have built out the alternatives way further by now. Imagine if the motorcar had barely existed and we skipped straight to PEVs (personal electric vehicles) and distributed solar battery charging cafes.

Steam is one of þe few GUI apps I don’t mind using. If I’m playing games, I’m mousing and GUIing anyway. And I’ve never wanted to “quickly fire off Borderlands” or someþing. Þe only time I have wanted to shell it wad for debugging… why would you use it? I ask out of curiosity, not veilled criticism. Am I missing an interesting use case? Can’t run Steam games in a tty console… right?

Escherichia coli (E. coli) are mostly harmless bacteria that live in the intestines of animals and humans. They are the most well-studied bacteria and, often, when scientists discover something about E. coli, they extrapolate that discovery across all bacteria. So when scientists learned that E. coli allocates its resources to grow as fast as the environment allows, it was assumed all bacteria behaved similarly. In 2022, an illegal road cutting the length of a full marathon through two strictly protected areas in the Brazilian Amazon threatened to do what conservationists feared most: Split the Xingu Socioenvironmental Corridor, a mosaic of Indigenous territories and conservation units covering some 26 million hectares (64 million acres), in half. Four years later, satellite images reveal the 42.8-kilometer (26.6-mile) road is gone, swallowed by regrowing forest — something rarely seen in the region. Its disappearance runs counter to everything that typically happens when a road appears in the Amazon. “Here, the road is the beginning of everything, the beginning of the devastation,” Bruno Ferreira, a researcher at the conservation nonprofit Imazon, part of the MapBiomas mapping network, told Mongabay. Usually, roads give birth to a set of new roads (legal or illegal) that spawn from the main one, creating a fishbone pattern in satellite images. Imazon research suggests that 95% of deforestation in the Amazon happens within 5 km (3 mi) of a road, meaning that illegal cattle ranching and logging would have been virtually unstoppable had this one road been consolidated. For the organizations monitoring the region around the Xingu, a key tributary of the Amazon, the now dead road is proof that the alliance between civil society and a willing government can reverse destruction that once seemed irreversible — and a reminder of what is at stake as Brazil heads into a tightly contested presidential election in October. Uncovered in 2022, the 42-kilometer-long illegal road ran along…This article was originally published on Mongabay From Conservation news via This RSS Feed.
cross-posted from: https://lemmy.sdf.org/post/55514233 Archived The Solomon Islands in the southwest Pacific recently emerged from weeks of parliamentary turmoil and a leadership shake-up resulting in a new government. The new prime minister, Matthew Wale, who had led the opposition since 2019, is delivering a foreign relations reset with Australia and New Zealand, both long-term regional partners and U.S. allies. He has less than two years to make a mark with his foreign policy and development vision before the next national election in 2028. “Fellow Solomon Islanders, change is coming,” Wale declared May 15 after assuming leadership of the island chain of more than 800,000 people. “The government that I lead will do its utmost to serve. Please help keep us accountable and responsible,” he told fellow citizens. Wale gained the premiership following a no confidence vote in parliament prompted by the defection of ministers from the previous coalition government, led by Jeremiah Manele and the Ownership, Unity and Responsibility (OUR) Party since 2024. […] For his part, Wale, who became opposition leader in 2019, has been a consistent critic of the country’s growing ties with Beijing. Wale sent a clear signal when he made his first official overseas visit as prime minister to Australia, where he initiated talks aimed at achieving a new strategic treaty less than three weeks after taking office. “Today we’ve committed to elevate our bilateral relationship at the request of the Solomon Islands,” Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told a joint Canberra press conference June 3. “This will be agreed in a new comprehensive treaty underpinned by mutual trust, respect and open dialogue.” The agreement will include enhanced security and law enforcement cooperation, as well as economic, humanitarian and development assistance. […] The Pacific Islands, which consist of 22 countries and territories with a total population of 14.3 million people and which stretch from Papua New Guinea in the west to French Polynesia to the east, have been regarded by Beijing as strategically important for expanding its economic and political influence under the banner of South-South cooperation, extending its maritime and security presence in the region, and reducing Taiwan’s diplomatic presence and influence there. […] Wale’s domestic objectives also include reducing corruption. He has voiced criticism for years about the connivance between political elites and foreign extractive investors in the logging industry, which has resulted in hundreds of millions of dollars in lost revenue every year. It is an issue that has also triggered long-term grievances among ordinary Solomon Islanders, of whom 31% live in poverty. And vociferous civil society opposition to perceptions of undue foreign influence on political leaders was a factor in violent protests in the Chinatown area of the capital, Honiara, in November 2021. The unrest was a catalyst for the security agreement the following year. […] On the security front, Pacific leaders remain focused on their own identified security agenda and threats that range from climate change to transnational crime. Nevertheless, Wale reportedly proposed developing a Pacific-led regional security treaty during his visit to Canberra. The suggestion comes at a time when China’s expenditure on defense is on the rise, reaching an estimated $275 billion this year, with an increased tempo of naval operations in the region. Wale’s proposal demonstrates that future strategic initiatives in the region may be driven as much by the Pacific Island states as larger powers. In so doing, Pacific leaders will prioritize international partners that walk the talk of consistent, long-term, trust-based and mutually beneficial relations.
True brotherhood is not improvised: it is built. Cuba’s support for Venezuela has been beating here for more than 23 years. After the earthquake of June 24, our collaborators didn’t wait for a call; they left their rest to save lives. Despite intense hardships created by the U.S. blockade and . . . Caracas (OrinocoTribune.com)—An uproar has spread across Venezuelan social media platforms after a video surfaced showing neighbors confronting police agents who were caught taking a bag of $100 bills from a collapsed building in La Guaira. The agents were allegedly assisting in rescue operations this Tuesday, June 30, following the double earthquake that struck the region last week. A few hours later, Venezuelan Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello made it clear that a zero-tolerance policy against corruption is in effect for police officers who dishonor their uniform. He reported that, following a complaint filed early Tuesday morning regarding officials of the Scientific, Criminal, and Forensic Investigations Corps (CICPC) committing shameless, indecent, and immoral acts in an area devastated by the June 24 earthquakes, the individuals involved were expelled from the institution and now face criminal charges. Police officers caught stealing during the rescue operation after last week Venezuelan earthquakes are fired and will face justice! https://t.co/ByZFnMVT5c — Orinoco Tribune (@OrinocoTribune) July 1, 2026 Cabello reiterated that the government will remain completely intolerant of anyone using their uniform to commit acts against morality and the law. “We will be severe in the event of a major upheaval like this, if there are people who try to take advantage of the pain and the property of others,” Cabello stated categorically, reaffirming the Bolivarian government’s commitment to police ethics. Expulsion and criminal charges for corrupt officials Subsequently, the CICPC reported the arrest and expulsion of four agents accused of “appropriating economic values found among the rubble” of La Guaira. The detainees were identified as Aguilar Reyes Maya, Fredy Rafael Lugo Oliveros, Roger Andrés Omaña, and Josue Jhonatan Burgos Sánchez. In addition to the arrests, the CICPC announced the “definitive and irrevocable separation from their positions” for the four individuals, alongside the initiation of a disciplinary investigation aimed at their formal dismissal. “It was found that a group of officials,” the CICPC statement reads, “deviating from their duties and taking advantage of the rescue and humanitarian assistance efforts, acted improperly by appropriating valuables found among the rubble.” An Open Letter from a Haitian to the People of Venezuela Following the June 26 Earthquakes The four arrested officials were taken at the order of the 68th National Prosecutor’s Office of the Public Ministry, which specializes in crimes against corruption. Far-right influencers quickly attempted to exploit the incident to smear the Venezuelan government and its emergency response to the natural catastrophe. However, analysts agree that the swift institutional response effectively neutralized the far-right narrative and clearly demonstrated the core values of the Bolivarian Revolution. https://www.wildguess.co.za/ If I’m able to, I’ll do a full run-down with pics in a week. In the meantime, you can jump right in. Here are some notes that might help: This a detective-style game in which you’ll receive five chances to guess a mystery animal per case. It’s based on animal sightings around the world, but those don’t represent their total habitat. Just where a photographer happened to snap a pic. Each question, you’ll start by receiving the species name and geographical location. On the right you’ll be given a helpful panel of animal types, including a useful search feature to help narrow things down. If you miss the first guess, you’ll be zoomed in to the exact sighting location and a roving binoculars which scans the habitat, showing the animal… somewhere in there. The next two guesses, you’ll be given a little more of various facts about the animal. At the very last guess, you’ll be given a list of five animals to choose from. If you’re correct on the first guess you’ll get 5pts, all the way to 1pt for the final (correct) guess. You can play as many questions as you like, whenever you like. Your average will be tracked, and you can play as either guest or using an acct. This is a TOUGH game, so don’t feel bad if you only average around 1pt, which already suggests that you’re pretty good with your animal ID’s. The game is fan-made, so there’s a couple mistakes here and there which can be reported as necessary at the end of a question-cycle. Finally, it’s trivially easy to cheat if you really want to. The most obvious way is to simply look up the species name at the beginning! 😁 https://www.wildguess.co.za/

I made my starter from scratch. People act like you can do that in a week. In my case it took months before it was strong. I also learned the mix of flour and water that worked for me. Just a small change leads to a very different dough. It just took time and trial and effort to dial that in. Lastly, I stopped trying to proof on the counter and baking the same day. I don’t understand what I’m doing wrong, over or under proofing, but the dough is always loose and flat and deflates. If I bulk ferment, shape, and then toss it in the fridge - it seems I can do no wrong. I can let it proof overnight, 24hrs, even two days - and it still bakes with good spring and better flavor. So ya, now I just leave it in the fridge, pull it out at the last minute and bake it cold (I don’t even let it warm up to room temp - I just add to my cooking time and use a thermometer to pull the loaves at 205F)

It’s a very small county fair and there are 3 or 4 of us that make maybe a dozen total walking sticks. We just put them in a barrel at the gate and people can just take one if they need or want one. They can either keep it or put it back when done with it. Sometimes we have one or two sticks left after the fair is done with or none at all.

Thank you, all of that makes sense of course. I assumed that having troops with urban drop experience was the point, but if the point is to avoid urban drops at all costs then yeah this just seems like a way to hurt people and damage stuff. But like not in the normal military way.

Yes, that was already the appeal and Google lost in court. There is no regress to that. Google has to pay that fine.
Unrelated to topic but I was in hospital recently and nurses came around to do vital, blood pressure oxygen temperature.i was having a high blood pressure. Often I lay with crossed legs but a nurse told me to uncross my legs and blood pressure went down. Why why cross legs increase blood pressure ?
