The economy added 57,000 jobs in June, with nearly all job growth coming from health care and social assistance. The unemployment rate edged down to 4.2 percent, but the employment-to-population ratio fell to its lowest level since June 2021. Prime-age employment declined sharply, especially among men, signaling potential weakness in the labor market despite low unemployment. Wage growth slowed to 3.5 percent year over year, lagging recent inflation and reflecting softer labor demand. Hotels, restaurants, insurance, and motion picture industries lost jobs, while women accounted for more than all net payroll job growth. There is still no evidence of an AI-driven jobs apocalypse, as productivity growth remains modest and concentrated job gains point to a cooling â not collapsing â labor market.

You could probably do something similar with Termux and Ffmpeg, but that requires terminal knowledge, and would be quite a steep learning curve for someone not familiar with it already. FFMPEG and shell terminals are not the most intuitive pieces of software.

@Amoxtli, one month of +0.5% after two quarters of contraction is interesting â but Iâd want to see the composition before calling it a turn. If the boost is heavily resource-export driven (oil/potash timing), it might not signal domestic demand recovery at all. Budget-constrained segments, including government procurement and education, experienced a slightly steeper decline than the commercial market. Both are expected to remain under pressure through the end of the year, although Omdia believes they could see a meaningful recovery in 2027. The text and the above graph expect PC purchasing to shoot back up in 2027. I donât buy it. Purchasing on PCs is down because prices on memory are up. There are only two ways that prices on memory come back down in 2027: a lot more supply enters the market, or demand drops significantly. There are going to be new fabs coming online in 2027, but they wonât be running at full bore until 2028. A lot of unexpected supply seems unlikely to suddenly materialize in 2027. I am also pretty skeptical that everyone is going to suddenly stop purchasing memory for AI purposes in 2027. If one wants to bet on a huge retraction in AI-related demand, that might do it. But I think that if thatâs what this was based on, theyâd be pretty explicit about it. If purchasers in 2027 suddenly decide âthe hell with it, Iâm willing to pay a lot more for memory than I was last yearâ, if price elasticity of demand suddenly falls off, thatâd do it. But I donât see a reason for that to happen. Heck, even if it did, Iâm not sure how many other memory consumers there are to try to outbid. The market cannot increase production in that timeframe, so the only way for PC purchasers to use more money is to outbid someone else, to get some memory that would have gone to someone else. It sounds like the big AI companies mostly have contracts in place, so you probably canât outbid them in 2027, even if you rolled up with more money. I guess maybe you could try to outbid cell phone users for available memory or something. Iâve also seen a number of articles predicting that memory prices in 2027 will, if anything, be somewhat higher than in 2026. I think that PC purchases are going to stay low in both 2026 and 2027.

Illegally sourced timber from Cambodia and Laos continues to enter Vietnamâs supply chains despite recent efforts to tighten legality controls, according to a new report from U.K.-based watchdog the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA). Falsified paperwork, manipulated harvesting quotes, and intermixing of timber from multiple sources are just some of the ways well-established criminal networks perpetuate the illicit trade, EIA teams uncovered during a four-year investigation. âWe repeatedly observed mechanisms through which timber from questionable sources could be incorporated into formal trade channels,â says Thomas Chung, forest timber campaigns lead for the EIA. Vietnam is one of the worldâs largest timber exporters. As a major manufacturing hub of furniture, flooring and other wood products, it plays a key role in international supply chains, shipping roughly $17 billion in timber and timber products in 2025. Timber from neighboring Laos and Cambodia represents a relatively small share of Vietnamâs total supply, the EIA report says, accounting for less than 9% of all timber shipments into the country. However, it carries an outsized legality risk that significantly undermines Vietnamâs efforts to ensure legal sourcing. To maintain access to lucrative export markets, such as the U.S., the EU, Japan and China, the country has made several recent updates to its national timber legality framework, known as the Vietnam Timber Legality Assurance System (VNTLAS). However, the EIA investigation indicates these efforts are being grossly undermined by persistent imports of illegal timber from Cambodia and Laos, exposing key weaknesses in the VNTLAS system. The CIGB is a beacon of technological sovereignty and innovation, President Diaz-Canel pointed out. On Wednesday, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel congratulated the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB) on its 40th anniversary and scientific achievements. RELATED: DĂaz-Canel strengthens cooperation with China and aims to expand biotechnology exports âFounded by Commander Fidel Castro, the CIGB is a beacon of technological sovereignty and innovation. Its vaccines and biopharmaceuticals save lives. In the Year of Fidelâs Centennial, we honor his legacy.â he said. âCuba needs you. It needs your intelligence, your dedication, and your commitment,â President Diaz Canel said addressing the CIGB members. On July 1, 1986, Fidel Castro inaugurated the CIGB, bringing to fruition a project that had been conceived and developed amid the severe restrictions caused by the U.S. blockade in place since the 1960s. âFor a country under blockade and with limited resources, the inauguration was an extraordinary event: venturing into that promising discipline was a privilege almost exclusively reserved for highly developed nations,â journalist Orfilio Pelaez recalled in an article published by Granma. âEquipped with the most advanced technology and a revolutionary integrated working model that linked research, production and commercialization, the project was financed entirely by the revolutionary government,â he added. Among the milestones leading to the creation of the CIGB were trips by Cuban researchers to scientific facilities in other countries to study the applications of interferon, a substance with potential antiviral and antitumor effects. In 1981, six young Cuban scientists traveled to Finland to learn interferon production: Manuel Limonta, Angel Aguilera, Eduardo Penton, Victoria Ramirez, Silvio Barcelona, and Pedro Lopez. After returning to their homeland, they succeeded in producing the first Cuban interferon from white blood cells, laying the foundation for the countryâs modern biotechnology industry. In 1982, Cuba inaugurated the Center for Biological Research, which later became the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology in 1986. âAfter becoming a thriving scientific and production complex, the CIGB was granted âHigh-Technology Enterpriseâ status in 2020. It has 1,370 employees⊠Fifty-six percent of them hold university degrees. Sixty-one percent have scientific and technological credentials, including 83 Doctors of Science, 233 masterâs degree holders, 46 senior researchers and 104 Level I technologists,â Pelaez noted. âThe CIGBâs patent portfolio includes more than 65 inventions, with more than 700 patent applications and patents in Cuba and abroad⊠Currently, 55% of its patents are in developed countries, 25.5% are in the BRICS countries and Argentina, South Korea and South Africa, and 20% are in other nations. More than 80% of its R&D projects are protected by patents, and 50% of its inventions are part of signed business agreements,â he added. How the US blockade of Cuba deprives people in the United States of Cubaâs life saving and improving drugs for Alzheimerâs, Cancer and Diabetes. As well as stunting Cubaâs production capacity for biotech medicines. pic.twitter.com/QScN2m6Blj â Helen Yaffe (@HelenYaffe) May 7, 2026 A Story Full of Successes CIGB Director Marta Ayala told Granma that the center is working on 22 innovative projects related to the CIGB-300, an anticancer peptide; PCB, a small molecule derived from the alga Spirulina platensis for cerebral ischemia; Jusvinza, an immunomodulatory drug that regulates inflammation without causing immunosuppression; HeberSaVax, an active immunotherapy vaccine against vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF); and the development of a tetravalent dengue vaccine. âThe greatest challenge for CIGB workers is to continue creating innovative, high-value-added products and successfully introduce them into the international market,â Ayala said, referring to the intensification of the U.S. blockade. In a summary of the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnologyâs principal achievements over the past four decades, Granma highlighted the following: * Heberprot-P, for the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers and complex wounds, is the flagship product of Cuban biotechnology. * Heberbiovac-HB, a prophylactic vaccine against hepatitis B, immunizes the entire population under the age of 25, is administered at birth, and no pediatric cases have been reported. * Recombinant human alpha interferon, including Heberon Alfa R and Nasalferon nasal spray, has been used against COVID-19 to enhance mucosal immunity. * Abdala, a vaccine effective against multiple SARS-CoV-2 variants with a high level of protection. * Gavac vaccine, the only vaccine on the international market for controlling cattle ticks, registered in 10 Latin American countries. * Porvac vaccine, against the classical swine fever virus, the principal threat to pigs in Cuba, with high efficacy and a worldwide patent. * Development of genetically modified soybeans and corn with higher yields, greater resistance to pests and diseases, and improved adaptation to climate change. teleSUR/ JF Source: Granma â X From teleSUR English via This RSS Feed.
This is the CEO of the Federalist https://nitter.net/seanmdav/status/2071983931998494799#m Several ways forward here given the choice of Roberts/Barrett to nullify the 14th Amendment and extra-constitutionally replace it with their own language: Nullification. States issue birth certificates, and they can just stop issuing them to non-citizens. Roberts/Barrett can deal with the fallout and litigate each birth individually. Pack the court. If Robert wants to be a politician who writes laws instead of a judge, then he can fight with 10 more unelected legislators in robes. Deny entry to all pregnant foreigners. Deny entry to all female foreigners. Require sterilization of all foreign visitors prior to entry. Dissolution of the Union. A nation which canât even restrict who gets to be a citizen isnât a nation. Amend the Constitution. This is pointless, because once a judge decides he can rewrite the Constitution at will (as Roberts and Barrett did today), the actual text is meaningless. But this is what most GOP politicians gravitate towards because they are useless. If you think all these options are not great, understand that that is what happens when unelected judges decide that they are in charge of the country and get to write its laws.

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.ca/post/67210007 Charlie may temporarily have the body and intelligence of a human, but a polymorphed owlbear still has no idea how to act in humanoid society. Singing Cricket is doing his best to keep Charlie out of trouble. Whatâs going on here? Singing Cricket (retired adventurer), Kayra (young night hag) and the rest of the hag coven are attending the wedding of a changeling, the strange creature that replaced Kayra as a baby. Charlie is an owlbear that Singing Cricket adopted by accident while trying to protect a baby house. Taking a Discworld-inspired cue, the hags decided to polymorph him into a human and bring him along to join the party. The maid of honour, Sassy, has been unlucky in love - but she was quite taken by Charlie (almost literally) when they were introduced. Unfortunately, Singing Cricketâs efforts to keep him on his best behaviour are frustrating the poor half-orc lady. Valve invented the âwe can violate copyright laws because itâs on a computerâ That stunt was invented by the music industry first. It was a hit with publishers. Valve helped the publishers do the same shit with video games and itâs still awful, but they werenât the inventors. It boils down to the same issues of predatory copyright laws that have been perverted into a twisted mockery of the good intentions they were initially supposed to serve.

i bought a intel n100 board with used 4gb of ram and an used ssd. then i bought 1 nic with poe for the wan (5g antenna with integrated modem) and second nic for a dmz. also i tried opnsense but switched to ipfire, because it offers all i need in a much simpler package. cost was arround 300âŹ. tbh i would just buy a simple mini pc with enough nics, but couldnt find one with poe to a good price.
But Appleâs real secret sauce is that - and judging by the attitude youâre swinging around in your post, OP, youâre not going to like this - they make REALLY good hardware. Iâd argue that their hardware is middling, but they make up for the shortcomings with decent software. Sort of the opposite of Windows, where you might have some nice hardware that gets held back by bad software (especially with the disastrous windows updates lately). Hence there being a really nice period of time where you could squeeze Mac OSX onto better hardware and ideally get the best of both worlds. Apple has historically not been the value pick in pure hardware specs alone, and I donât doubt that you could absolutely shop around and get a computer that, on paper, would be more powerful. Before the RAM price hike, they were the subject of mockery because they charge exorbitant prices for increasing the amount of memory in a machine you wanted to be (it was in the region of +$300 for another 16GB to get it to 32GB).

Hereâs the segment: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yI-0FKFfO54 He seemed pretty coherent to me. At times clearly thinking faster than his mouth can keep up but really no big deal. Pretty interesting how heâs fully accepted that there will be âa wealth taxâ as a result of a backlash against AI. And how the CEOs he knows are âlividâ about how totally useless AI is even after they jumped in boots and all, lol
