Sri Lanka intensifies fight against dengue and the mosquitos that cause the infection

Sheinbaum Demands Proof from the US on Alleged Campaign Financing with Fuel Tax Fraud Money

The United States Department of the Treasury must hand over the evidence backing its claim that money from a fuel tax fraud network linked to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) was used to finance political campaigns in Mexico, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo stated. The president maintained that the Mexican government was never informed of that accusation, and questioned that the department circulated the claim without first sharing the evidence with national authorities. “We were never informed about the campaigns. What proof do they have, too? It’s the same thing: saying something is happening without any proof.” The president explained that some of the people flagged by the Treasury Department were already being investigated by the Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF), so there was coordination between the two governments to follow up on the case. However, she reproached the US authorities for deciding to publish the statement before finishing the joint work. “The people this statement talks about were also already under investigation by the UIF, but they jump ahead with the statement, they didn’t wait for the joint communication, and they bring up this issue of the campaigns, which we don’t understand where it comes from.” She compared this case with the measures recently announced by the Treasury Department against three Mexican financial institutions, asserting that back then evidence was also requested to back the claims, and only two pages with no evidentiary elements were handed over. “When we asked them to provide the proof so that we could accompany them in that process, they only sent two pages with no proof.” She added that demanding evidence is part of the usual cooperation between the two countries, recalling that the United States also requests proof from the Mexican government when it submits extradition requests. “When we have requested, for example, in the case of extradition, they ask us for proof. It is a common practice for proof to be requested on both sides.” Referring to the fight against fuel tax fraud, Sheinbaum Pardo stated that her administration has reinforced actions to reduce fuel smuggling through customs operations, measures implemented by the Tax Administration Service (SAT), investigations by the Attorney General’s Office (FGR), and financial intelligence work for the seizure and freezing of accounts. She indicated that there are still various investigation files being assembled with the aim of gathering the elements needed to request new arrest warrants against those responsible for these illicit operations. “A great deal has been done to reduce fuel smuggling,” she asserted, and stated that one of the main indicators is the increase in sales by Petróleos Mexicanos and by the sector’s private companies, which, she said, reflects a reduction of the illegal fuel market. The president insisted that the Mexican government keeps its investigations into the fuel tax fraud networks open, and reiterated that cooperation with the United States must be based on the exchange of information and evidence. China Accused of ‘Two-Faced Diplomacy’ in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

cross-posted from: https://mander.xyz/post/54526595 In parts of the world such as Ukraine, Myanmar and Japan, the Chinese government has been accused of employing “two-faced diplomacy.” It’s a strategy of publicly pledging peace, economic cooperation and regional stability while aggressively positioning its military and taking actions that fuel violence. … There are examples in Africa as well, where Beijing’s official stances are in direct contradiction with its actions. In Sudan’s civil war, China claims to seek peace as a potential mediator. But that position is starkly contrasted by the proliferation of weapons manufactured by its state-owned companies, which prolong the conflict by supplying both sides. Geopolitical analyst Samir Bhattacharya says China’s two-faced diplomacy is at play in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where it has partnered with the government while maintaining defense and economic ties with Rwanda and Uganda. Independent United Nations experts accuse both African countries of backing the DRC’s M23 insurgency. “Beijing’s growing military and defence-industrial activities in the region signal a narrow, opportunistic turn that risks fueling further instability,” Bhattacharya, an associate fellow at Observer Research Foundation, wrote in a May 11 essay. “This two-faced diplomacy — designed to protect investments and enhance influence — risks ultimately undermining the very investments it seeks to secure.” China’s primary interests in the DRC are economic. Companies closely tied to Beijing control the majority of cobalt, coltan, copper and uranium mines, and the Congolese armed forces have been deployed repeatedly to mining sites in the east to protect Chinese assets. … In the east, the DRC’s ongoing deadly battles with M23 rebels feature Chinese drones and weaponry on both sides, as the DRC, Rwanda and Uganda have purchased significant quantities of Chinese arms. “[China] has supported training programmes for Congolese security personnel, provided logistical assistance, and encouraged the deployment of local troops to protect Chinese-operated mining facilities,” Bhattacharya wrote. “This approach allows Beijing to safeguard its interests while maintaining the image of a country that adheres to non-intervention as official policy.” … Experts say that by keeping security ties simultaneously with the DRC and its rivals, China is prolonging the conflict while claiming it seeks peace. In recent years, Norinco, China’s largest weapons supplier, and other Chinese companies have sold artillery systems and other arms to Rwanda. The DRC, meanwhile, purchased its first batch of three CH-4 attack drone systems from China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp. in 2024. “On one hand, China seeks stability in the DRC to protect its extensive mining investments,” Bhattacharya wrote. “On the other, its continued engagement with neighbouring states limits its willingness to take a definitive stance in regional disputes.
