It isn’t ‘strange’, it is, as you say, very obviously and intentionally monetized the same way TikTok is. The 1% huge payoff vs 99% no payoff divide being essentially random is the point. The draw of potentially going viral and potentially becoming a multi millionaire is what draws in people, particularly young people whose brain’s haven’t matured yet and thus aren’t capable of realistically assessing risk vs reward. Its gambling, but essentially as an independent contractor career or hobby. The cost is opportunity cost, your time and attention and work. Probably many of the people pouring tons of work into Roblox for years now could have just made their own indie games at this point, probably made a lot more money. https://devforum.roblox.com/t/reminder-about-ip/116517 Here the official Roblox account on their own forums clarifies that anyone making a Roblox game is inherently giving Roblox a liscense to use all of their IP. So… if you proof of concept something in Roblox, it gets decently popular, and then you decide eh, im gonna pull the gamemode out of Roblox after I develop something similar in Unity or Godot or something… does… Roblox retain some amount of rights and is now able to sue you? Does Roblox even honor the request to withdraw your Roblox game? I am genuinely asking these questions, I am not able to find examples or guidelines for these scenarios/hypotheticals. Tons and tons of the software industry revolves around who technically owns the right to exactly what ideas, what code, what formats… and the entertainment industry is similar with character likenesses, plot lines, etc.

This is addressed directly in the linked videos. Development for Roblox doesn’t translate outside of Roblox.

This is the best summary I could come up with: Well, there it is, the update for Roblox has arrived that now forcefully blocks it from working with Wine on Linux systems (like Steam Deck). Roblox has always been somewhat iffy to play on Linux, at times being broken while people working on the likes of Grapefruit and Vinegar repeatedly kept up with changes to make it work. The Roblox developers then introduced Hyperion anti-cheat software, but continued to make it work unofficially with Wine but that wasn’t to last as a developer explained that it has caused cheating. Despite what you may think of Roblox (and it’s historically had plenty of problems) as one of the biggest gaming platforms ever, it’s certainly a shame to see it go. There’s plenty of people out there that have Roblox as their main thing, and so not being able to do it on Linux is quite a loss. Any game that intentionally prevents it from working on Linux is a loss as it just increases the uphill battle Linux has as a gaming platform. The original article contains 207 words, the summary contains 171 words. Saved 17%. I’m a bot and I’m open source!

We’re close. We just need a couple of vendors to step up and take some responsibility. Steam already picked up all the hard stuff. Adobe products, Outlook, and of all fucking things Roblox. I probably also really wouldn’t hurt if somebody could manage to make Nvidia background removal working OBS Linux.

My daughter went through a phase where she REALLY wanted to play Roblox. Probably word of mouth from school. I’m not THAT old (only mid 30’s) but I didn’t really understand the concept of Roblox or how you buy more games. That probably led to me telling her no. Glad I stuck to my gut.

Metaverse, Roblox and Fortnite. All the buzzwords I needed to stop waiting for that game.
