Two pangolin traffickers in South Africa sentenced to eight years in prison

The Molopo Regional Court in Mahikeng, South Africa, sentenced two wildlife traffickers, Edward Motlatsi Phiri, 46, and Tlhoriso France Ralph, 51, to eight years in prison. They were convicted of smuggling a Temminck’s pangolin, a vulnerable species native to Southern and Eastern Africa, according to a statement released by the North West province’s environment agency. The judgment, delivered on May 26, 2026, followed the arrest of four suspects on June 2, 2023, when law enforcement authorities, acting on a tip, intercepted a vehicle in which they were traveling and seized a live female pangolin (Smutsia temminckii) intended for sale. During the court hearing three years later, charges against two accused traffickers were withdrawn while Phiri and Ralph were found guilty. “This sentence sends a strong message that wildlife crime is a serious offense with devastating environmental consequences,” said Bitsa Lenkopane, with the Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism in the North West province, in a statement. “Every operation, every investigation, and every successful prosecution strengthen our collective fight against illegal wildlife trafficking.” Pangolins are trafficked for their scales, worth thousands of dollars on the black market. They are falsely believed to have medicinal qualities in East Asia. I really like the declarative paradigm of NixOS, but the way I use my computer often actively go against this paradigm. Next I found out about atomic distributions such as Fedora Kinoite and Aurora, and I really liked those too except for the fact that I had to layer so many packages which sort of defeated the purpose of using their images (not everything can or should be run in distrobox containers). This past day I’ve been setting up a custom image using the ublue-os image template and I’m surprised by how easy it was to get going. The only negative part is having to use GitHub, which I would prefer to avoid. I just wanted to make this post to highlight how easy it is to customize atomic distributions (assuming you want to use atomic distributions in the first place, traditional distributions are of course easier to customize). In fact, according to a key figure in the German business community (who is a dear friend of mine), it’s unprecedented. An op-ed, two pages, centerpiece, in Germany’s most important economic newspaper (the Handelsblatt) that begs the German establishment to stop looking at China via the prism of propaganda. And it’s by their Shanghai bureau chief - not some outside contributor. The title is “The China debate cannot continue like this!” and the article makes the case that it’s suicidal, from a German and European standpoint, to keep reducing China to false caricatures rather than facts. In effect it’s rubbish in, rubbish out: if you tell people lies about China - whichever direction they go (anti or pro) - then obviously the policies that come out will be rubbish, designed for a mirage of a country that exists only in people’s imagination. Needless to say, this is absolutely music to my ears because it’s literally the main point I’ve been making in my advocacy around China for now almost 10 years. Some are finally seeing the light… I also believe, as I argued in my article “Are Western media turning China-friendly?” last year (https://arnaudbertrand.substack.com/p/are-western-media-turning-china-friendly) that this type of coverage was bound to happen, and there will be more and more of it. Why? For a very simple structural reason: China is now too powerful to coerce. The West, and Europe in particular, just don’t have the leverage anymore. Which means that if you tell China to do something and they don’t want to, they just won’t do it. Period. In this situation, incapable of coercing, your only remaining choice is… convincing. And what do you need if you want to convince someone? Well, you need to understand them: understand how they think, how they behave, what drives them, what they actually want. In other words: the moment coercion stops being an option, not only does propaganda stop being useful, it begins to be actively harmful as genuine understand becomes a strategic necessity. Reality is finally becoming profitable again. Which means, if you’re a journalist reading this and you’re peddling some of your usual lies, describing China as some sort of cartoonish dictatorial dystopia that’s simultaneously on the verge of collapse yet a “threat” to the whole world (in short, if you write on China for The Economist or the FT), be on notice: the real threat to your country isn’t China. It’s you.

If someone needs/wants to use AI to do extremely simple things like plan their date activities, that’s a good indication that they are an exceedingly uninteresting and unengaging person overall. They can’t even do the simple things, so the hard stuff in life is going to be insurmountable and they’ll be a massive burden on their friends and partner(s). Where’s the incentive to “give them a chance” in this scenario? The books at home are the better option by far.

Playtest My Game

Critical, you said? Input: At the very least, Esc needs to bring up the menu and Space needs to toggle / cycle the game speed. I’m actually not familiar with RTS gameplay very much, but these are some of the most basic standard controls in genres like city builders and 4X. (I noticed later that the 1, 2, and 3 keys do this, but it took a while and I only discovered by accident. Only later, I noticed there were tool-tips on the time buttons). Being able to pan the camera by right-clicking would be nice. This would allow full camera control with the mouse. (I understand right click also performs actions in the game, so this would require some thought about what the button does in context). If you are committed to finishing the game, you should aim to support gamepad input too (though I wouldn’t dwell on this). User Interface: The gray tab at the bottom of the screen is quite hard to notice above the gray moon background until you know it’s there. The game low-key has Vi syndrome (cannot figure out how to escape). You need a settings menu in the title screen. Even with the in-game menu, there is no apparent way to switch from fullscreen to windowed mode A user interface theme and fonts (to replace the default Godot UI theme. This is polish and I would worry about gameplay first) “Toasts” (quick on-screen text popups) for voice announcements (“Power low,” “Power restored” etc.). I found the voice clips a little hard to understand, but toasts would also aid in internationalization and accessibility. Get rid of the tool-tips on the bottom-right keypad. Put a stylistic green screen on that calculator and display the information there so that It’s instant. You don’t need to wait for a pop-up or accidentally dismiss a pop-up because you failed to hold the mouse still enough. It is in the same place for each button. You don’t have them popping up above / below / left / right of the cursor based on how close it is to the corner You can include some pictographic information, like requirements, lack of resources, an image of the actual thing. Sound Design: Needs music (I’m sure you’re aware). This would increase my desire to continue playing considerably. More noises in general. Rovers should make noises when they’re moving around. I should get a sense that things are happening / are not happening from audio feedback. It’s very easy to over-do this though. The noises should be relatively quiet unless at a high zoom level. Graphics The perspective seems a little weird when rotating the camera. Not sure if it is orthographic or something happening with the perspective at 3440x1440 resolution (21:9 aspect ratio). At this perspective, the ground almost looks slightly concave when it’s rotating. An orthographic perspective obviously was a requirement for classic sprite-based RTS games, but you have a rotating camera and 3D models here. The resolution of the 3D scene appears to be down-scaled. I could understand doing this as a stylistic choice, but it is at odds with the higher resolution fonts, UI elements, and color depth. The lines on the mini-map are smoother than the actual scene, which seems a bit odd. The contrast between shaders on the player constructions and the completely flat shading of the ground is also distinct. Lunar regolith is highly reflective, but the surface doesn’t interact with light at all. Game design The game needs to tell you why you cannot perform certain actions, or indicate why things aren’t happening. I got stuck in the tutorial twice. Once, I managed to designate the solar panels but the rovers didn’t start building them. Took me a couple minutes to figure out I needed to assign them to do it - I thought this is what I had done by having the rover selected in the first place to make the “SOL” button available. The second time I got stuck was when the tutorial asked me to build the habitat. It would show a red square no matter where I tried to place it. Took a moment to figure out the reason is because I did not have enough metal. I haven’t gotten very far yet, but I get the impression that the player’s capacity to accumulate resources will simply snowball until they win. In this regard, the game is not very challenging. On the other hand, recognize a game-over condition. I let the game run in the background for about 15 minutes and all of my constructions have been destroyed. AFAIK there is no way to recover from this state. It’s Game Over. At this point, the game should enter a game-over state, display some sad imagery, play a dirge, maybe show statistics for the run - something. noticed a bug too: If a construction is destroyed, I think its controls remain visible on the keypad. I still see all the buttons for actions a rover can do, even though the rover is long gone. The singular threat of meteor strikes lacks variety. The way solar flares have the potential to make meteors more dangerous is a nod towards complexity, but there needs to be more interlocking gameplay mechanics to produce a wide variety of situations the player might find themselves in. Consider (and I am only spitballing here - this is not a list of demands or anything): The moon has a long day / night cycle (long enough even that you can do much of the tutorial during the day and then pull the rug out 2 weeks into the game). This can introduce gameplay mechanics involving long periods without solar power, and different properties caused by extremely high and extremely low temperatures. There can be trade-offs between different types of power generation, (solar, fuel cells, RTGs, etc). Having unique sources of power begs for unique on-map resources and unique constructions to harvest them. The rovers might be doing too much. The player should need to build a larger variety of machines. If the power-denial mechanic is shifted to the day/night cycle, solar flares could be re-purposed to interfere with radio / remote control mechanics in some way. They shouldn’t be made completely redundant. Giving each individual construction its own power capacity instead of a binary “the whole moon has power” vs. “the whole moon doesn’t have power.” This gives the player an incentive to build logistical infrastructure to support mining / exploration farther from base, as well as the risk/reward of trying to stretch these limits. A repair mechanic. Increase the costs of building new constructions such that it is more economical to repair damaged constructions. Maybe give meteors a splash-damage range (i.e. direct hit obliterates, but close hit takes something offline). Then the player has “fires” to put out - literally or metaphorically. Damage can also be caused by other mechanics like temperature (ambient, or over-heating), running power systems beyond their capacity, etc. etc. etc. A larger variety of resources may give the player reasons to explore, or engineer work-arounds for un-buildable contraptions, or approach environmental hazards they would have no reason to otherwise, or convert one resource (or a combination of resources) into other resources. This can introduce some aspects of factory-builder style gameplay. (though it is a substantial change to the game design), Introducing a space-race angle to the game, where perhaps there is also a nearby imperialist moon base can introduce PvP aspects to gameplay, as well as a race to claim valuable resources on the map or build offensive / defensive countermeasures. All that said, you have a really solid foundation here, both thematically and technically. The idea is good. The core systems are there. You need to introduce a few more mechanics to add variety and complexity to the game loop, but don’t do what I always do and quit working on a project way too early.

First world transition problem: bathing?

So I’m in bath and notice that prior to HRT, when laying sideways, my hips would fully be under water. But now they don’t. I started it only 1 year and 2 mo ago (hips probably sadly fused already since I’m 28). And now part of hip is above water… Yay! But also, dangit. The bath’s filled to the brim and I love being fully submerged from neck down :(

Happy pride month! - Novo General Megathread for the 1st-10th of June 2026

It’s easier with the peaches and mangoes because they take some time to ripen and wont all ripen at once. The peaches are “tree ripe” ie hard as a rock when I get them and it takes a bit for them to get soft so I have plenty of time to eat a bunch as is and bake with others. I might try canning some this year, mostly to save for more matcha lattes

In terms of gender self-care? I used to dye my hair to help feel comfortable with my gender. Having nice hair always felt good and euphoric. Also making accessories and modifying clothes. Four months after President Donald Trump’s name reportedly appeared over a million times in long-hidden files related to his former friend, convicted sexual predator Jeffrey Epstein, and weeks after one analysis warned that his foreign aid cuts will likely kill 9 million people by the end of the decade, the president announced Wednesday that he’d identified the politician who is “probably” the worst person to ever run for public office. In the Oval Office, Trump declared Democratic US Senate candidate Graham Platner, whom Maine primary voters chose to run in the general election by more than a 52% margin, a “thug” and a “cheap, no-good person,” adding that he is “worse than any human being that’s ever run for office, probably.” “Nobody’s ever had a record like that… This guy’s got a rap sheet, I’ve never seen anything like it,” said the president as he lied about Platner, who has no criminal record. Trump, meanwhile, was convicted of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in 2024. A New York judge also ordered Trump to pay a $450 million civil penalty over financial fraud that year, and in 2023, a jury found him liable for sexually abusing and defaming columnist E.
