I have too much scrap wood. I needed a scrap wood bin. So I made a scrap wood bin out of scrap wood to hold my scrap wood.

The proportions are odd, but it’s designed to fit under the landing of the stairs going into the garage. Makes a good use of an otherwise awkward space. Like everything else in the shop, it’s on casters to allow for easy movement and cleaning around. Most of this wood was from the big lifting tower I used to get the dust collector motor into place.

47 years ago today, Sony introduced the Walkman

from Time magazine’s “A Brief History of The Walkman” (July 01, 2009): The Walkman wasn’t a giant leap forward in engineering: magnetic cassette technology had been around since 1963, when the Netherlands-based electronics firm Philips first created it for use by secretaries and journalists. Sony, who by that point had become experts in bringing well-designed, miniaturized electronics to market (they debuted their first transistor radio in 1955), made a series of moderately successful portable cassette recorders. But the introduction of pre-recorded music tapes in the late 1960s opened a whole new market. People still chose to listen to vinyl records over cassettes at home, but the compact size of tapes made them more conducive to car stereos and mobility than vinyl or 8-tracks. On July 1, 1979, Sony Corp. introduced the Sony Walkman TPS-L2, a 14 ounce, blue-and-silver, portable cassette player with chunky buttons, headphones and a leather case. It even had a second earphone jack so that two people could listen in at once. Masaru Ibuka, Sony’s co-founder, traveled often for business and would find himself lugging Sony’s bulky TC-D5 cassette recorder around to listen to music. He asked Norio Ohga, then Executive Deputy President, to design a playback-only stereo version, optimized for use with headphones. Ibuka brought the result — a compact, high-quality music player — to Chairman Akio Morita and reportedly said, “Try this. I inform them that I post my madness and it all comes from my twisted brain. Whether it was a deity, an ancient machine, or something far older, none could say. The Gorath discovered its remains buried beneath the planet’s crust. It was a colossal skeletal entity. Their heart still pulsed despite the long since decayed body. Divinity is what the Gorath collective viewed this phenomenon as. A cathedral was erected, encasing the dormant beating heart. The build consisted of bone-like alloys and living machinery. The red crystals distilled synthetic blood and neural essence. Embedded throughout the structure to pacify the faint pulses echoing the halls. The Crimson Reliquary of the Hollow God was established. With the delusional truths and whispers of limitless knowledge, scholars, and priests sought out an audience with this entity. Some who entered the structure survived and others perished. The creature was feeding. The Gorath for centuries were blinded by the awful truth. Every desperate plea for salvation nourished the remnants of its consciousness. The crimson crystals lining the reliquary were not holy relics, but vessels. Storing fragments of stolen souls siphoned from those who entered its halls. As the Gorath rebellion consumed their civilization and the machines turned upon their creators, the reliquary endured. The priests perished, the empire crumbled, and entire worlds were forgotten. Yet the Hollow God remained. The Hollow God isn’t dreaming of the universe. The universe is dreaming of the Hollow God.

How I backed up and booted locally my entire VPS

Yeah that’s a reasonable way to take a backup. I mean I would have recommended an actual backup tool, but dd is perfectly good. Especially since you zeroed as much as you can, since you didn’t have a tool skipping unused blocks. But the Wi-Fi bit was pretty gross, yeah. Fine to test but never ever for something I actually wanted to use.

I can’t verify this, so take it as gossip, but a person who tried to organized a unified voice for a similar issue against AfD at a townhall meeting once, told me that when they entered a meeting, a cop came up to them, told that they need to ask them some questions regarding the safety of the meeting, and he was held there for long enough so they couldn’t properly attend the meeting, so afd person told their speech unapposed. Geese, why are you like this?

There was this one time I had stopped at an EV charger, was planning to plug in the car and go eat, when I noticed a couple of geese in front of the charger as I was pulling up. I step out of the car, goose hisses at me and refuses to move, effectively blocking me from getting to the charger. Head down, hissing, daring me to give him a reason to fuck me up. It’s not like I could have just gone somewhere else. That was the only charger for several miles and I was pretty much at zero battery. So here I am in a stalemate with this goose who has no reason whatsoever to deny me access to much needed juice for my vehicle, just doing it to show me who holds the real power in these parts. After several tense minutes the goose decided it had gotten the message across and fucked off. I choose to believe that the local goose mafia still control that EV charger.

I don’t think flying helicopters for the russian military is a great way to live long regardless of whether your ass is physically on an ejection seat or not. Can you trust that the mechanics did the work they said they did for maintenance? Can you trust the quality of parts that are put into the helicopter as replacements when the original kit breaks down? Can you trust the lifespan definitions set out for crucial parts by the government to be realistic? Can you trust the air defenses in the area to not just blindly fire off rockets at you every time you pop up on their radar?
