Four migrant workers – Ullah Ismat Qiemi, Safi Iayjad, Amin Fazal Khogjani, and Waseem Khan – were burned alive in a car for demanding the regularization of their work at the beginning of June in Amendolara, Italy. “They were farmhands working in our fruit and vegetable harvests, exploited like slaves,” the Calabria chapter of left party Potere al Popolo stated. “When they found the courage to rebel and demand a proper contract, they were punished in a horrific manner: the gangmasters trapped them inside a car at a rest stop near Cosenza and set it on fire.” The event was caught on camera and expanded upon by Mohammad Taj Alamyar, a fifth worker who survived the attack. In his testimony, he described the coercive conditions in which he and his comrades were forced to live, including unstable housing, delayed payments, and the absence of working contracts. While the workforce used to comprise Italian workers, it now consists largely of migrants from countries including India, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. While technically workers arrive in Italy legally, Granato told BreakThrough News, they are exploited from their very first moments there. “To reach Italy in the first place, workers and their families are forced to take on debts. When they arrive here, they have to pay off these debts – only to often discover that the companies they were told about may not even exist or do not want to employ them, and they end up in a slavery-like situation.” The caporalato system is illegal in Italy, but trade unions warn that the implementation of legislation remains lacking. And when cases of extreme violence turn public attention to specific workers exploited under this model, rarely does the discussion address responsibility beyond the gangmaster level. The US Department of Justice on Friday approved Paramount Skydance Corporation’s megamerger with Warner Bros. Discovery, prompting opponents of the $110 billion deal to place their hopes of blocking it in the hands of Democratic state attorneys general. The DOJ’s Antitrust Division approved the merger without requiring divestitures or behavioral remedies—a significant win for billionaire Paramount CEO David Ellison. Analysts and critics had suggested the DOJ might require sales of some of the corporation’s numerous cable networks, streaming services, film and television studios, sports programming rights, or media outlets. It’s an update from a few months ago that Google hasn’t bothered to fix. About an hour after unplugging your phone go into settings>battery>battery usage and force close whichever apps are using hella battery. I’ve also noticed far fewer issues if I’m connected to WiFi but I haven’t seen anyone else report that yet.

Hello, there is currently no end-to-end encryption on the server I’ll explain why below. The reasons why True end-to-end encryption (where I literally can’t read your files) means the server only ever sees encrypted blobs. The problem is, that also means I can’t scan anything, and right now every upload is checked against known CSAM and run through malware scanning. Go fully zero-knowledge and I lose that capability entirely, which on an anonymous host is a real problem it basically turns into a blind dropbox for whatever people want to put there. So it’s genuinely one or the other either I can see enough of the content to keep it clean, or I can’t see it at all and can’t keep it clean. I chose to keep it scannable, because for an open anonymous service, I think being able to block that kind of content is more important. That’s the real reason there’s no at-rest encryption not laziness it would compromise security. I’m open to hearing how you’d weigh the pros and cons, though.

I’m about halfway through We by Yevgeny Zamyatin. It was originally published in the 1920s, and has a lot of the hallmarks of sci-fi of the era: everything’s made of glass, everyone has access to personal helicopters, Government scientists can do imagination-ectomy procedures on subjects to keep them in line, everyone has a number instead of a name. It’s very “in the year 1999” kinda vibe. I like it. Also a pretty snappy read, I’m not struggling to get through it like some other so-called masterpieces (one day I’ll make it through Gravity’s Rainbow… maybe)

Microsoft’s Xbox division is reportedly planning layoffs as new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma plans a “reset” for the beleaguered gaming business. Bloomberg, citing anonymous sources, first reported Wednesday that Xbox was planning “major job cuts” within the division in early July after Microsoft’s fiscal year ends on June 30. The same day, Sharma and Xbox Chief Content Officer Matt Booty said in a memo to employees that after their first 100 days on the job reviving Xbox, the next 100 days would be devoted to a major overhaul — or a reset, to borrow gaming parlance. After touting the recent successes of Xbox — Microsoft has been hard at work to reverse the decline in subscribers to its Game Pass service — Sharma and Booty laid out the realities the gaming business needs to navigate. Microsoft has poured billions of dollars into its gaming division over the past five years, even excluding the $69 billion purchase of Activision Blizzard. The memo said investments in Xbox have surpassed $20 billion since 2021. At the same time, the division’s annual revenue has declined by nearly $500 million. “Going forward, this cannot continue,” the memo said. Amid the artificial intelligence boom, which has helped boost Microsoft’s cloud computing sales, Xbox is facing a hardware component crisis. The cost of storage components for gaming hardware has quadrupled since last fall and Microsoft expects another significant increase heading into 2026 holiday shopping season. As AI demand increases, companies have been spending more on specialized hardware. That coupled with AI’s extraordinary need for memory is leading to higher costs. For consumers that means demand is outpacing supply for Xbox consoles. Because of this, Xbox needs a new business model for its next-generation console, code-named Helix, according to the memo. “Our current platform infrastructure is not built for the battle ahead. … We’ve become too reliant on vendors to operate our systems and must become more self-reliant as an engineering culture to build for the future,” the memo said.
