Weekly Improvement Thread - Jun 14th 2026

Not much to say about last week, I love my office and this year they made it easy for me by hiring me well in advance of the summer season. Being less under pressure, I noticed people around me can be nice, actually đŸ˜¶ So the fat point for next week, be nice to people around me. I know they, too, are or will be under pressure but it’d make it easier for everybody if I was just a tad bit less dictatorial. Maybe it’ll help with my anxiety, I can’t stay on meds forever. PS: I’m totally stealing that picture, it’s so good â™„ïžđŸ»

How Western Media Normalizes Israel's Ethnic Cleansing in Lebanon | Common Dreams

While the October 2024 embed was one of the more preposterous embodiments of Western corporate media’s special relationship with Israel, outlets continue to do a fine job of sanitizing Israeli brutality even when their reporters are not physically viewing the region from inside an Israeli armored vehicle. Since March of this year, Israel has killed at least 3,613 people in Lebanon and displaced 1.2 million, obliterating entire villages and otherwise expanding the ecocidal policy honed in the Gaza Strip. There has been no remotely comparable destruction on the Israeli side, and a recent Reuters article (5/31/26) that had attempted to suggest some symmetry now comes with the preface: “This May 31 story has been corrected to remove a reference to tens of thousands of Israelis being displaced by Hezbollah fire, in paragraph 3.” Like in Gaza, where genocide proceeds apace in spite of a declared ceasefire (FAIR.org, 10/21/25), the media tend to report “ceasefires” in Lebanon without caring to highlight the fact that it’s not a ceasefire when Israel is still pummeling the country and massacring people, all the while setting the stage for a massive land grab with its creeping so-called “evacuation orders.” 
 As Battah remarked to me, the media’s acceptance and deployment of such arbitrary vocabulary creates “artificial structures” and a sense of orderliness, when in reality “there’s no yellow lines, there’s no yellow, there’s no colors—these are just illegal invasions.” And because media are committed to sanitizing Israel’s behavior rather than questioning it, “colonization becomes normalized.” The eagerness of journalists to do Israel’s bidding is all the more confounding given that Israel is currently the No. 1 killer of journalists in the world. A recent Associated Press article (5/29/26), for example, reduced the pulverization of Lebanon to simply “ongoing fighting in southern Lebanon between Israeli troops and Hezbollah fighters.”

Hunger Strikers in Adelanto ICE Jail Moved to Solitary After Meeting Congressmen

Last Monday, California Reps. Judy Chu, Jimmy Gomez, and Pete Aguilar visited Adelanto Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Processing Center as the hunger strike in the immigration jail entered its second week. The Democrats met with three of the hunger strikers, who gave them a petition, signed by some 150 people inside the facility, speaking of inhumane conditions inside the jail and degrading treatment by staff. The Adelanto ICE jail is run by private prison company GEO Group. The next day, GEO Group staff entered a unit “in riot gear holding pepper spray, tear gas canisters and zip ties,” and removed two of the people who had met with congressional staff the day before. And on Wednesday, they removed the third person, according to other detainees. Section 22 of Oaxaca in Favor of Continuing CNTE Strike; National Leadership Defines Course of Walkout Today

This article by Carolina GĂłmez and Jessica Xantomila originally appeared in the June 13, 2026 edition of La Jornada, Mexico’s premier left-wing daily newspaper. Amid the consultation that the National Coordinator of Education Workers (CNTE) is carrying out with its base mobilized in the National Strike, Section 22 of Oaxaca, which is one of those with the largest contingents on strike, came out in favor of continuing the movement, which includes an encampment in Mexico City’s Historic Center, as well as marches and blockades in the country’s capital and in other states. In the early hours of this morning at the Permanent State Assembly of Section XXII SNTE-CNTE, Yenny Aracely PĂ©rez MartĂ­nez, general secretary of the section, reported that Oaxaca declares itself in favor of continuing the movement, which began this past June 1, in the context of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The results of the consultation were 6,162 votes for a recess of the strike and 6,337 to continue the actions. Likewise, since yesterday afternoon, Filiberto Fraustro, general secretary of the Zacatecas section, was anticipating that the majority of the Coordinator’s teaching base in that state was in a “predisposition to continue” with the actions of the national strike, but warned that they still had to wait for what teachers in the other states decided. The launch of the consultation stems from the agreements of the session of the National Representative Assembly (ANR), held in the early hours of Friday. If the rank-and-file conclude the consultation this Saturday, the results could be announced at the ANR that is expected to take place today at midday. Trump Super PAC to Hold $1 Million-Per-Plate Fundraiser as Hunger Surges

A super political action committee created to support Donald Trump is preparing to hold a big-money fundraiser at the president’s Virginia golf course that will charge attendees $1 million each. As reported by NBC News, MAGA, Inc. will host the $1 million-per-plate event at the Trump National Golf Club Washington DC on the day before the president is set to host Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) events at the White House as part of his 80th birthday celebration. “The fundraiser is at least the sixth such $1 million-per-person event held by Trump-aligned groups for the midterm elections,” reported NBC News. “Republicans at nearly all levels hold a significant midterm cash advantage over Democrats, who expect to be outpaced financially in many key House and Senate races.” Lisa Gilbert, co-president of Public Citizen, linked the ritzy fundraiser to Trump’s economic policies that have primarily benefited the wealthiest Americans at the expense of the working class. “The comingling of 250th anniversary events, Trump’s UFC fight, and a $1 million per-plate fundraiser on Trump’s own birthday,” Gilbert said, “gives corporate interests and wealthy donors not just an ultimate fight—but the ultimate opportunity to pay tribute to the president. Rather than celebrate our nation’s anniversary in the bipartisan manner directed by Congress, the Trump administration has directed public money and public property to politicized events.” “Major corporations, such as Chevron, Exxon, MasterCard, and many more,” Gilbert added, “should be ashamed to be associated with this corrupt spectacle.” The fundraiser comes as a recent study from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York showed food insecurity in the US has reached its highest levels since the Covid-19 pandemic. The New York Fed researchers said their study found “a remarkable increase in food insecurity, particularly among lower-educated and lower-income households and households with young children,” as well as “a contemporaneous increase in pessimism among the same groups, along with a sharp decline in job-finding expectations.” The researchers noted that “while many households are doing fine and economic activity overall has been expanding at a solid pace,” there are large numbers of people “facing high levels of economic insecurity and financial strain,” which has resulted in plunging overall consumer sentiment. If you’re doing anything more than gaming I’d recommend Linux for privacy reasons. Or install a network monitor and see how much data Microsoft is sending back to its servers about you, constantly. But yeah when I got my last thinkpad I was just using it for casual gaming and nothing else, so I left windows on it for a couple months. Slightly easier to pirate games in windows. You can get a refurbished Samsung Evo on eBay for like $30, toss Linux on it (look for a listing with a crystaldiskinfo screenshot), and keep your Windows drive as a backup. I have mine in a box somewhere in case I ever have a usecase that I don’t want to use Linux for. Even before that you can try booting from a liveUSB, which might run a bit slower but only takes like 3 minutes to make. I recently tried out CachyOS on an extra laptop and it seems pretty sleek. All the common distros are fine though.

Idealist take and not even particularly good within that framework. Politicians of both sides represent capitalists, primarily, maybe with slight differences in which subsection of capitalist interests they prefer. The social ideological label mostly identifies which values they have to give lip service to in order to get votes. Working people that identify with either label, whose interests are not represented by the politicians, are all class-unconscious. (The petty bourgeoisie, landholders, and many of the PMC have mixed interests that are usually represented in government to some degree, although their class consciousness is usually distorted and fragmented). If anything, a random worker that identifies with conservatism is more “evil” than one that identifies with liberalism, because they’re both misled, but the latter is misled to believe their representative can do good things (healthcare or whatever) while the former is misled to believe advancing misogyny, racism, homophobia serves their interests. And a random “middle class” (petty b / landholder / PMC) that identifies with reactionary politics may actually be more class conscious (i.e. aware and happy for the fact that they benefit from exploitation and hierarchy), compared to the liberal that has a false belief in progressive potential within bourgeois democracy, in ameliorating the consequences of exploitation without losing their privileged status. This smells vaguely of the nazbol undercurrent that’s been growing on the tanky deprogram subreddit over the last few months. Conservative oil-working straight white men in Texas are the true revolutionary class, blue-haired baristas that voted for Biden and refuse to give me their number are counterrevolutionary.
