Yep! Great point. Women were (and are) used for unpaid domestic labor, but this labor is absolutely socially necessary. In this way, the nuclear family arose as a way for capitalists to avoid paying for domestic labor, where the wage of the man was essentially the social cost of reproducing a family. Women were made dependent, and entire families created in such a fashion as to be the most profitable for capitalists.

I’m all for it. Russia is already having massive inflation issues. Lowering interest rates will only accelerate it. This war will be won when Russia suffers a large economic collapse and can no longer sustain the industrial output to serve the front.

When you say “I understand why people don’t want to have kids, but if they don’t we’re going to invite the plot of Idiocracy”, what do you think that implies? I think women’s autonomy is more important than the scare-mongering line that conservatives are going to take over if left-leaning women don’t have kids. One of the main reasons for the falling birth rates is women having more choice over their bodies. So when you talk about how we should have more children to outnumber conservatives, that does directly imply we should look at ways to make left-leaning women have more children. I was honestly engaging in a conversation with you and asking you questions. Simply saying I’m misconstruing your point does not clarify what you actually meant.

Congressman Joaquin Castro on Wednesday accused US Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials of moving to deport families to Venezuela immediately after last week’s devastating earthquakes that rocked the country, killing nearly 2,000 people and wounding more than 10,000 others. “Just hours after the devastating earthquakes in Venezuela that killed over 1,900 people, ICE attempted to deport children and families from the Dilley trailer prison to Venezuela,” Castro (D-Texas) said on social media, referring to the Camp East Montana detention center at Fortb Bliss in El Paso, Texas. “They were woken up in the middle of the night and sent to Arizona on their way to Venezuela,” the congressman continued. “The families were ultimately sent back to Dilley, but worry that they could be deported at any time. It is unthinkable to send children and families, who have committed no crimes, into a country plunged into chaos by natural disaster.” Castro noted that “last week, 146 men, women, and children were deported back home to Venezuela hours before the earthquakes—many are suspected to have been killed.” On June 24, a 7.2-magnitude earthquake centered in San Felipe, Yaracuy—about 100 miles west of Caracas—was followed less than a minute later by a 7.5-magnitude temblor, whose epicenter was also in Yaracuy. Tens of thousands of people are still missing, an estimated 1,000 buildings are destroyed, and basic essential services like water and electricity remain offline in many affected areas. “These actions are cruel and un-American,” Castro said of the post-quake deportations. “I am calling on the Trump administration to halt all deportations to Venezuela and to shut down the Dilley trailer prison.” Camp East Montana, the nation’s largest immigrant detention center, is operated by private prison profiteer Amentum Services Inc., which “has a history of health, safety, and other violations of federal law,” according to the consumer advocacy watchdog Public Citizen. Kyle Virgien, senior staff attorney at the ACLU’s National Prison Project, called Camp East Montana “nothing short of a civil rights catastrophe.” The ACLU and other groups are suing ICE and other federal agencies and officials over what the plaintiffs call “inhumane” conditions at the camp. “Since the day it opened, the facility has repeatedly made headlines for horrific rights violations and even the deaths of three detained people, yet ICE has still evaded accountability for its conduct,” Virgien said. Castro, who has visited Camp East Montana several times, said after touring the facility in May that “when we look back at this era in American history, we will look back in shame… of the human rights abuses, most particularly against children." Activists, including Japanese Americans interned by the US during World War II—one of which was located at Fort Bliss—have called for the closure of Camp East Montana and other ICE facilities, which many have compared with the concentration camps in which they were imprisoned in the 1940s. After the earthquakes, advocates have also renewed demands for the US to end its economic sanctions, which have devastated Venezuela’s economy and have been blamed for the deaths of tens of thousands of Venezuelans. Earlier this year, President Donald Trump ordered an illegal invasion of Venezuela and the abduction of President Nicolás Maduro, who the US administration accuses of dubious narcoterrorism-related crimes. While the Trump administration has issued narrow exemptions from sanctions to companies seeking to profit from Venezuela’s political crisis and copious natural resources—primarily oil—these waivers have not delivered broad relief to the people who need it most. In its term that ended last October, the Supreme Court passed an important milestone that went unnoticed: For the first time, it decided more cases by secret ballot, and with few signed opinions, than it did for cases argued in open court. These decisions, which make up the court’s “shadow docket,” are a fast-track way to get a decision from the top court. They rarely include arguments, have limited briefings and have expedited timetables, and justices infrequently provide explanation of how they voted or to cite legal precedent. The Supreme Court’s increased willingness to bypass its regular process has empowered President Donald Trump at the same time as the administration has increased use of executive authority. The court has repeatedly green-lit policies of his that lower courts have blocked — and has done so with little to no explanation.

We did tweak the taglines mentioned in the last meta to rotate between different highlights, as all of it at once was looking a bit cluttered if viewed from a mobile browser. But otherwise, things have mostly been purring along. For the graph enthusiasts among us (I know you’re here >_>), let’s take a quick look at the instance’s stats. According to our fediverse.observer page, we’re continuing to see a steady flow of new users signing up, now totaling 2,369, and our Monthly Active Users (MAU) are hovering at around ± 380 users, which has been pretty consistent for a little over a year now. 📸 Meta Post Image 🎞️ This month’s artwork is Library Truck by Jacob Coffin (CC BY-ND 4.0), who is also a member here! Iran says it has exported more than 40 million barrels of crude oil since the U.S. removed its naval blockade two weeks ago. Tehran is now selling oil at a 20% premium: chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf. Iran has agreed to let ships transit the Strait of Hormuz toll-free for 60 days under an MOU with the U.S., but said it will retain control over the waterway’s administration.

My agenda is pointing out that you want to talk shit about Muslims but feel you can’t on Lemmy and the real motivation behind that. The fact that you are so aggressive in your denial tells me all that I need to know. I did review your comments since you invited me to and I didn’t see any general anti-religious talk. I also saw several red flags that lead me to believe you are anti-immigrant which plugs nicely into the anti-Muslim sentiment. I am guessing you have some latent racists beliefs that you have never confronted. Being in denial about this is not a good look, but entirely understandable.

I don’t understand why anyone would choose to buy a console after this. The only draws of consoles was the turnkey hardware, which you can generally get with Proton now, and access to physical games, which won’t be a thing soon. Now it’s just a locked-down PC with a DRM storefront that makes you pay a subscription to pay online games and which may or may not have backwards compatibility from system to system. Maybe that’s just the PC gamer in me talking. Are there any advantages to console anymore? Like, a single benefit?

I’m playing Road 96 this week, which is on sale for cheap currently and I’ve been curious about for a while. I should save the full review for after I’ve seen the ending, but it’s definitely an interesting game. The perspective of how the story is told is very unique - there is no protagonist or main character. In fact, it’s almost like a “story roguelite”. You play in multiple individual “runs”, where in each run you play as a nameless and faceless teenager trying to get to the border of the fictional dictatorship Petria and escape the country through Road 96. You even unlock abilities during some events that you can use in any future run, to further the whole roguelite feel. During each of the runs, you come across a set of characters, and a large part of the story is their stories, told through the eyes of all these nameless teens you play as as you continuously come across these same characters at random points during your journeys. The other story is the fate of the nation, and this is where the Telltale-style choices-matter stuff comes in. There are three types of dialogue you can pick, either promoting revolution, peaceful change through voting or just ignoring everything and fleeing the country. I’m assuming the ending you get will be influenced by which of these you pick the most times. I’m interested to see what the endings are like, especially regarding how they’re handling revolution/voting. Overall it’s a bit of a weird one because I like some of the things it’s doing and it has a charm to it, but I also a lot of the time can’t help but think “man, I wish this game was just a little better”. Like, the story concept seems fine but the writing isn’t great. The voice acting is pretty poor, and it’s not that well recorded either. Some of the political stuff and the story looks like it lacks nuance. It seems like the product of a team with a lot of interesting ideas, but not necessarily the skill or budget to execute them. But eh, for a couple of dollars I am not going to complain too much. And it does have a charm to it.

IMPORTANT NOTE: please use a VPN whenever visiting Blorptube, or anywhere else on the internet, for that matter. Protect your privacy. For this Wednesday Super Slop Night, first up is Squid Game Season 3 (2025), a Korean Netflix series set in a dystopian world in which cash-strapped contestants agree to compete against each other in children’s games for a cash prize, only to discover that the penalty for losing is death. Who will be the last person standing to collect the loot, and what kind of twisted minds came up with this game, anyway? I guess we’ll find out. Director Hwang Dong-hyuk is otherwise best-known for the acclaimed drama Silenced (2011), which we have not yet watched, but we will. This was a huge hit when it debuted on Netflix, and Letterboxd loves it, so let’s give it a whirl. Episode 6 of season 3 tonight, finishing off the series. After that is Viy (1967), a Soviet horror film about a seminary student who must spend three nights inside a remote village church praying over the corpse of a dead witch. A whole bunch of spooky stuff happens during that time as various spirits and demons torment him. Will he last through all three nights, or will he lose his faith altogether and nope the hell outta there? I guess we’ll find out. This is by far the best-known and best-regarded work of the film’s two directors, Georgi Kropachyov and Konstantin Ershov. It is probably the best-known horror film from the USSR. Last is Masters of the Universe (1987), the live-action adaptation of the He-Man toy line, and its animated TV series, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe (1983). Dolph Lundgren of Rocky IV (1985) fame stars as the eponymous hero, a tower of sentient muscle named Adam who transforms into He-Man with a magic sword to battle the evil forces of Skeletor (Frank Vangella). We meant to show this one awhile ago, but never did; that changes tonight. This is the sole feature-film credit of director Gary Goddard, who is otherwise best-known for creating the TV series Captain Power (1987) and Skeleton Warriors (1994). It’s 80s schlock, but it looks like some solid slop. We’ll start at 8PM EST on Blorptube, right here: https://blorp.bot.nu/o/visual_cuisine Be there, comrades!
