Roblox is pulling a DLSS 5, offering yet another example of a tool mistaking itself for an artist

I’m gonna be honest, in this specific context, I don’t hate this. DLSS5 sucks because it takes all the hard work that goes into making games and flattens it out into this kind of uniform pastiche of an art style. It turns every game into the same bland, generic slop. But if we’re talking about kids building experiences for each other in Roblox… Yeah, why not? I don’t buy the idea that a group of twelve year olds should just suddenly develop the skills required to make photo-real graphics in between homework and bed time. Yes, this is the equivalent of slapping an Instagram filter on everything, but if that filter allows someone to realise an approximation of the idea that was rattling around in their head, I think that’s pretty cool. And if they really get into this stuff, I think they’ll start to notice the limitations of these tools and get interested in learning how to do it from scratch so that they can get a result that’s even closer to their vision. I’m aware that a lot of this stuff does get taken pretty seriously and actually sold as entire games, effectively, but even in that context, you’re not exactly going to stand out if you’re using the same glow-up filter everyone else is. And for the people who really are just making a cool dungeon crawl for their friends to play, being able to just kind of cheat code a baseline level of graphical fidelity seems pretty OK. I guess my point is, yes, this is a crutch. But it’s pretty damn silly to complain about crutches when you’re standing in a hospital.

Update: Roblox source code leak has been confirmed

So as many of you know, there was a source code leak for Roblox in the past year, which I did discover while scrolling trough LBRY a few months ago. I looked at the files, contacted LBRY support and they contacted Roblox. Roblox (probably) verified, it was the real source code sitting out there, on the public internet. LBRY took down the zip file from the site.

Gamepass a service that lets you play games, but GaaS generally refers to stuff like Roblox and Fortnite–individual games that act as a platform to sell you things from. That’s where the flaws are. I’m struggling to see the flaw with GP except for the inherent flaws with paying for a revokable license to download games in the first place. At least GP doesn’t lie about you owning the games that you’re playing like “buying” them from the xbox store does. I mean, is Netflix flawed for offering movies as a service? You pay a monthly fee to be able to watch a wide variety of shows and movies, but you don’t own any of it. It’s literally exactly the same thing except for the type of media they offer.

Twitch updates sexual content guidelines amid ‘topless’ meta backlash

My 4-year old nephew was watching YouTube Kids one night when I was babysitting, and some roblox trash was on. Usernames and chat were included on-screen. “I hate N****rs” “gas the Jews” and similar were prominent usernames and chat was full of 4Chan type chat. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ All these platforms are unfit for kids.

BattleBit Remastered - Update 1.7.2: Optimizations, Bug Fixes, UI updates

The game really shines when it makes the most realistic possible weapons/vehicles models/skins, but has the Roblox-looking player models with realistic skins. I hope they keep that balance (the models themselves are super fake, but everything else is ‘realistic’) because it really heightens the game. The games my brain associates it with the most while playing are Battlefield 2, Bad Company 2 (which is large praise), and a visual hint of Roblox. Totally caught me off guard, I’m surprised how much I enjoy it.

Can we please

Isn’t the whole gripe with Pumpkin Spiced whatever the same with Christmas decorations popping up in mid-October? Like, its not fucking special if you’re putting nutmeg in my coffee in June. Same with the D&D / Marvel / Roblox / Whatever fandom of choice. It was fine twenty years ago when it was the New Thing. Now we’re pushing 100+ hours of Disneyfied extended universe content on Marvel alone. Half my “recommended” podcast feed is six C-list celebrities making the soy face in front of a pair of crossed battle axes. And my street is lined with shitty faux-bakery corporate cafeterias trying to sell a piece of rye bread covered in guacamole for $15/slice. Who actually enjoys this shit anymore? It feels like I’m being sealed into Disneyland, like a Pharaoh buried alive in his pyramid. It stopped being fun ages ago. Now I’m torn between boredom and horror.
