dug this up after the ‘Is Gaming Praxis’ post: https://hexbear.net/post/201895 game literacy (as in game design / systems analysis) is quite practically similar to employing critical theory and historical materialist analysis, and this becomes even more overlapped when you get into the economics of things like pay2win, labor practices related to ‘crunch’, releasing buggy games early, etc this is not to say that all g*mers automatically get a pair of ideology glasses right away (or even eventually), but the persuasion of them to that type of understanding of analysis has less friction over time just look at the pre-teens that have done this type of work related to the abusive structures of Roblox for instance game criticism was a significant step on the path that brought me to critical theory and marxism

Roblox. It’s a game but also a platform in a sense. It’s full of kids running around yelling racial slurs, kicking users with dark coloured avatars, and lots of far right content. It is like a grade school run by 4chan.
It once played perfectly fine under WINE, then Roblox explicitly blocked it for no good reason.
before i start becoming the real life equivalent of that one vinesauce joel shareware madness edited game sound (hint: that annoying dragon game) today at work, i wanna say this to you all: thank you thank you for being one of the only communities that actually likes me. every time i tried getting somewhere i always had issues and was constantly told to fuck off in one gruesome way or another less gruesome way. even back then when i was in the status quo, i was still demonized and told to just sod off of life and never return. i mean come on, not even roblox was good for little me. is “you are a waste of human flesh” a good thing to say to a 13 year old who talked about how his favorite community made shoot game changed a walking animation? idk what to draw today or if i would draw, i got jspaint on my phone to draw in my artstyle at any time i guess
Counting Roblox as a game instead of a platform seems weird to me, from what I experienced when I tried it out.
This is demonstrably false. I mean, if “mainstream” means “successful to broad audiences”, that’d be games with crafting/building elements (Forntite, Roblox, Minecraft, The Sims), sports games (FIFA) and a bunch of competitive games (League of Legends, CounterStrike, CoD). Plus a couple of outliers, too (Mario Kart, GTA V, Animal Crossing). Batman, God of War and RE do… fine? They do fine. But they’re not the “mainstream” of the gaming industry, they are games for a specific slice of players, they would need 10x the reach to compete. RE4 Remake sold what? 5-7 million units? Mario Kart was breaking 50 million last year. People don’t have a grasp on what games are actually popular.
Microtransactions aside, if you’re trying to protect your kids from creeps online you’re gonna have to ban every platform that supports interactions with strangers. This includes several other games you’ve mentioned in the comments including Minecraft. Personally, instead of banning it I just play it with my kids on a regular basis. There’s plenty of actually decent games on Roblox and it enables game ideas that otherwise wouldn’t see the light of day. My favourite is the Ikea survival game.
Funny story, I pretended to get groomed by this dude on Roblox for like 2 weeks because my nephew really wanted their pets in some ninja clicker game. This was the course of action that I chose because I thought it would be funni. This was entirely out in the open, no dms, global chat. The only thing that prevented them from getting really weird was the filter, and my belligerent cursing after a long message wouldn’t go through because I wrote “butter” or something equally innocuous. Neither the game admins nor the Roblox admins cared about my report of a child predator, but hopefully the fbi kept something vile from happening. Anyway, my nephew quit Roblox like 3 days after I gave them those pet things because they couldn’t figure out how to jump over some obstacle. My brother didn’t seem to care about my anecdote or warning. All of that to say, that filter was really frustrating when I tried to erp with a child molester. I can’t imagine how much this dude suffered.

This is some good context. I’m not too familiar with roblox but I understand it’s more of a platform than a single game. How are they accessing microtransactions? If that can’t be prevented than that’s a bigger problem.
Highly recommended! It’s so much fun and definitely scratches that BF3 itch. I’ve heard it described as BF3 and Squad have a baby and it plays Roblox.
