Community Rules and Guidelines

All the rules from this Lemmy instance apply. Additionally, please try to follow these community-specific rules: Rules 1. Posts must relate to Lua All posts must be related to the Lua programming language. This also includes related and derivative projects, such as Luau or MoonScript. 2. Use descriptive titles Your title should in short describe the contents. That applies to all kinds of posts, no matter whether you’re showcasing a project, discussing a feature or asking for help. Examples of bad titles: please help! ^ Doesn’t provide any information about the post How to rotate SENT? ^ Should also information about API and ideally expand SENT which is a rather niche acronym request.lua ^ Could provide a short description of the library Examples of good titles: [Help] Lua errors when using string.format with the %p flag How to rotate a Scripted Entity in Garry’s Mod when spawned? request.lua - Lua >=5.1 library to simplify HTTP requests Please note that there are no strict rules related to tagging posts (eg. including [Help] or [Roblox] in the title), but they are very welcome nonetheless. 3. Provide reproduction code When asking for help, you should provide a reproduction code whenever applicable. This doesn’t mean that you should copy and paste your whole project or script into the post, in fact the opposite. Try to isolate the issue you’re facing on your own and only include the code needed to reproduce it. A screenshot or image of the code is never valid. Additionally the code should be provided using the following Markdown syntax: ```lua ``` 4. Information about environment When asking for help, and ideally releasing a project, you should include as much information as possible about the target environment. Most important thing is the Lua API in use, that means the video game, game engine, framework, library, etc. Other information such as Lua version, environment variables, operating system, etc. may be useful as well. Posts not following the rules may be deleted without prior notice. Repeated offenders may be issued a warning and banned. If you do not agree with the rules or statements made here, please discuss your issue in the comment section, I’m sure something can be done about it. Moderation If you want to help and moderate this community, please message leave a comment under this post or contact me in any other way.

Where do you draw the line regarding windows?

Every tool for it’s job. I have 4 windows boxes 5 linux boxes and 3 macs in the house. I will not force the children off Roblox I will not buy the children macs. I will not put forth monumental effort for a substandard experience just to get rid of windows. If roblox gives in to linux with a native app or wine, (or they age out of roblox) I’ll give it a test run with the kids assuming they don’t have another game that requires the same. I cannot eradicate the last Windows box for work because there are closed things I must occasionally deal with. That said it’s use is around once a week. I will eventually eradicate my security camera VM, but I need a lot of time to work on frigate.

How'd you get into programming?

Personally, I started off with Roblox back in the early 2010s, and taught myself Lua. I really liked those Tycoon games, and wanted to see how they worked. I eventually found Minecraft (like every kid back in the day did), and learnt Java to make Bukkit server mods. Around 2016 I thought websites were kinda cool, so I started learning HTML, CSS, and JS, and I’ve been in the web dev space ever since. What about the rest of y’all? What’s your personal programming path?

Labour theory of value lessons via Roblox scams

My kid came to me this morning to ask about a video they found on YouTube. It offered FREE ROBUX!!! in exchange for: Installing Microsoft Edge. Only using Bing! for searches. Signing up for a Microsoft Rewards account. Continue using this setup for five consecutive days. Only available by signing up via this YouTuber’s referral link. None of which children under 13 can legally do on their own. Cool exploitation, bro. So I explained: even if this is a legitimate offer, that’s five days of work for only $1.25! The people you’re doing this work for will make a lot more than that! Those Robux aren’t free—you’re paying for them by working, and paying way more than they’re worth! You should keep what you earn! I had them clean up the bottles and cans in their and their sibling’s room, and told them they can keep the full recycle value. I figure they’ll probably pull in about 400 Robux for 10 to 15 minutes of work. I don’t have to clean, they learned a lesson. EZ mode Dadding on a Saturday morning. :sleepi:

I banned my kid from Roblox.... what next?

This is some good context. I’m not too familiar with roblox but I understand it’s more of a platform than a single game. How are they accessing microtransactions? If that can’t be prevented than that’s a bigger problem.

I banned my kid from Roblox.... what next?

Microtransactions aside, if you’re trying to protect your kids from creeps online you’re gonna have to ban every platform that supports interactions with strangers. This includes several other games you’ve mentioned in the comments including Minecraft. Personally, instead of banning it I just play it with my kids on a regular basis. There’s plenty of actually decent games on Roblox and it enables game ideas that otherwise wouldn’t see the light of day. My favourite is the Ikea survival game.

Addressing the Kira accusations - Light Yagami on YouTube

Oh, i just saw what youre replying to. The tumblr post’s joke is because his last two videos have been investigative deep dives where he exposes people for frauds. The roblox oof video that ends up being more about exposing Tommy Talarico involved some pretty incredible feets of research. So “he’s a good enough detectice to catch Light” becomes a funny joke to make.

The RTS genre will never be mainstream unless you change it until it's 'no longer the kind of RTS that I want to play,' says Crate Entertainment CEO

This is demonstrably false. I mean, if “mainstream” means “successful to broad audiences”, that’d be games with crafting/building elements (Forntite, Roblox, Minecraft, The Sims), sports games (FIFA) and a bunch of competitive games (League of Legends, CounterStrike, CoD). Plus a couple of outliers, too (Mario Kart, GTA V, Animal Crossing). Batman, God of War and RE do… fine? They do fine. But they’re not the “mainstream” of the gaming industry, they are games for a specific slice of players, they would need 10x the reach to compete. RE4 Remake sold what? 5-7 million units? Mario Kart was breaking 50 million last year. People don’t have a grasp on what games are actually popular.

My first impressions of Minetest

Since Minecraft 1.19.1 with the new chat moderation system, I have vowed to avoid playing Minecraft. So I finally gave Minetest a shot a few months ago. I knew it was considered a game engine, so my impression was I would have to find and download standalone games. But when I learned about the Minetest launcher, I realized it was all there in one download. And if you join a server, it installs the necessary mods automatically. So this is a lot more like Roblox or Curseforge. I think calling Minetest just a game engine is kind of underselling it and maybe it should be branded differently. I also think it shouldn’t be described as an alternative to Minecraft. Minecraft has been in development for 13 years, most of that time with hundreds of employees under Microsoft. With virtually no height limit, Minetest beats Minecraft technically in a lot of ways. But I still think Minecraft is a much more polished experience overall, and it can take a bit to get used to some of the differences. Instead, I think Minetest should be described as an alternative to modded Minecraft, because this is where it really shines. After all these years, Mojang has not added any modding support to Minecraft. So Minecraft mods can be clunky, buggy, and every Minecraft update breaks all the mods. Minetest, on the other hand, is built only for mods, so mods work really well. When you play a modpack, you are not playing for the vanilla features of the game. Some Minecraft mods even remove vanilla features for a brand new experience. So why put all that effort making a free to play mod for a pay to play game, when you can do it for a free to play game? If you are a mod creator, you will have an easier time modding on Minetest, anyone can play your mod for free instead of paying Microsoft $30, and players will have the same, nay, a better experience, because modded Minecraft can be incredibly buggy and prone to crashes. So Minetest beats modded Minecraft hands down and if I had known sooner I would have played it sooner. I’m really enjoying Minetest; it has a lot of potential.

Convincing people can be easy

Count yourself lucky. But frankly, imo League is overhated. I’ve been playing that game since I was 12 and no one has attempted to groom me on it. Meanwhile my time on Roblox and public Minecraft servers was…something…
