I have a $300 budget for a new sewing machine, what should I get?

I’m not inexperienced but I don’t know much about different models, aside from the big brands. I’ve already had bad experiences with used ones, so I definitely want to buy new. I mainly sew stuffed animals and do small repairs on clothing. If I can sew through light leather, like sheepskin, that’s an absolute bonus. Any help or advice is appreciated!

Keir Starmer says some road and energy projects will be scrapped to pay for £15bn defence plan

Sir Keir Starmer has announced an extra £15bn for defence over the next four years, but warned it would mean some road and energy projects will now be scrapped. The UK prime minister said on Tuesday that the long-awaited defence investment plan (DIP) would reverse the “corrosive hollowing out” of the armed forces and transform a military that has been “underfunded and unsuited to the threats we face”. He called the blueprint “a platform on which I know my successor will build”. It has been signed off by Andy Burnham, to whom Starmer is expected to hand over power as soon as July 20.

Israel's 'kill first' strategy is now aimed at Turkey. Will the region respond?

As day follows night, Turkey has become Israel’s latest existential enemy. As if in unison, a chorus of Israeli politicians has raised the alarm about a new “Sunni axis” opening up, composed of Turkey, Syria and Qatar. … But Israel is as serious about setting on Turkey as it was about Iran. Firstly, the rhetoric against Turkey is bipartisan. It is the leitmotif of the man tipped to replace Netanyahu, Naftali Bennett, who has said that a new Turkish threat is emerging: “I want to be very clear. Turkey and Qatar have gained influence in Syria, are seeking influence elsewhere and everywhere throughout the region, and from here I warn - Turkey is the new Iran.” The theme was picked up by Amichai Chikli, the diaspora affairs minister, who said the era of the “Shia empire of Iran” was over. In its shoes, he added, walks a new axis: “the Muslim Brotherhood axis of Erdogan’s Turkey, Syria and Qatar. And it’s better to open your eyes now.” Secondly, the groundwork for Israel’s latest campaign was laid as far back as November 2024, when a month before the fall of Bashar al-Assad in Syria, Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said Israel should reach out to its natural allies - the Kurds and the Druze. … Today, the mood music in Ankara has changed, and there is an acceptance that Israel means what it says about the coming confrontation. Turkey is focused on building up its deterrence, be it naval, air force or drones. … Even so, Turkey is playing for time. Turkish defence analysts think it will take three to five years for the country’s air defence systems to reach operational capacity against Israel’s air force. Turkey’s main response to Gaza was to focus on the creation of a defence pact with Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, the same regional powers that helped to mediate the US-Iran deal. That is what Israel fears and is now fighting to dismantle. Whatever happens now in the Gulf, the main battle line between Israel and the region will be drawn in Lebanon and Syria.

Justice Jackson rips Justice Thomas in scathing birthright citizenship concurrence

Jackson criticized her fellow justice’s “ahistorical” interpretation of the 14th Amendment. Echoing the Trump administration’s sentiments, Thomas argued in his dissent that the 14th Amendment “was designed and understood to secure equal rights for the freed blacks but has instead been repurposed for political projects that the Reconstruction Congress did not support.” Thomas also argued that the Civil Rights Act, which became the foundation for the 14th Amendment, had ensured citizenship to people born in the U.S. and “not subject to any foreign power.” “The Citizenship Clause [of the 14th Amendment], which the same Congress passed shortly after the Civil Rights Act, was understood to have the same meaning,” Thomas wrote. “It guaranteed citizenship to persons who were both ‘born . . . in the United States’ and ‘subject to the jurisdiction thereof.’” Jackson called this “ahistorical,” denying that the “text at issue conferred citizenship only on freed Blacks and those in analogous situations.” Jackson also blamed the Trump administration and Thomas for repurposing the amendment, adding that the Civil Rights Act initially only included Black people but was later expanded to include people of all ethnic backgrounds.

why does crossing legs increase blood pressure?

Your blood vessels are a closed system. Imagine I fill a garden hose with water and cap it off at both ends, then kink the hose somewhere. Pressure will rise because it’s a closed system. It doesn’t matter if I kink it at one end or the other. Overall pressure will rise because I’ve removed some space somewhere.

Jet Lag: The Game - Stateside Scramble - Ep 4: International Women's Day

That whole section had me cracking up, especially when the boat actually appeared round the corner. And it gave us a very specific thing, it was like, “Yep.” It even shows a little picture of a boat! It says, “that’s your boat!” Wonderful storytelling and buildup to that happening and the jeopardy of maybe needing to leave the state challenge-less.

Wish in one hand

You are not being civil. If I say hey there buddy, i noticed youve got adorable kids there. I’m gonna kidnap them and lock them in with my state’s congressmen and a bucket of lube for a few days. Then I’m gonna visit you and make sure your body has the right number of holes. We probably disagree about what that is, but I think we can come to a compromise in the mid double digits! Compromise! Civility! I would not call that civility, I would call that disgusting and gross as well as violent and offensive. That’s what you sound like. That’s what everything out of your vile fucking mouth sounds like to any thinking human being. Content matters as much as form, and yours is always without exception violently ignorant to an offensive and dehumanizing degree. Also, literally nothing works like or is what you think it is. You are wrong. This is a blanket statement. You are wrong. About every single god damnthing so far. Its like you’re ontologically wrong. Like a wizard conjured up a dunning-kruger elemental. Fuck off back to San Francisco, finish your mba at Stanford, and fuck off.

Do banks close accounts that are inactive for a long period?

Like this: the individual has a bank account with some left over balance (not much) but the last time it was ever used for any transactions was like 48 months ago (since then, no further activity has been recorded nor has the associated card been used to conduct a transaction). Just because it’s inactive, can the bank close that person’s account due to inactivity?

The current gaming situation right now

Yeah, you really have to read between the lines. Like, if this guy wants to kick me in the balls, and the alternative is 5/6 shots from that revolver in my head, then what’s his plan for that sixth round? He’s obviously gonna shoot me in the balls. That’s what it means to be an informed consumer these days.

I finally bought a domain! Now what

If you really want to, you can use tailscale to home, then route your outbound traffic over the other VPN. But that’s a bit tricky to set up and it’ll probably be pretty slow. Using a VPN for privacy is overrated, unless you have a government or ISP that is actively snooping on your traffic. The majority of connections are already encrypted with https.
