'Beginning of a New Phase': Hottest June Ever Recorded for World's Oceans

A new report released Wednesday shows that surface temperatures of the world’s oceans hit a record for June, sparking fresh warnings of grave “consequences for weather patterns, global climate and marine ecosystems” across the globe. The analysis by the European Union’s Copernicus Marine Service, and confirmed by the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), finds that “record global sea surface temperatures” of 21.0° Celsius (69.8° Fahrenheit) in June of 2026 beat the previous record in the same month broken in 2023 and again in 2024. C3S director Carlo Buontempo warned that the “current conditions” of the oceans “could indicate the beginning of a new phase, leading, once more, to uncharted territory.” “With ocean temperatures at these levels and El Niño on the horizon, we are likely to see more temperature records fall in the coming months,” Buontempo warned. "That Copernicus Marine data reaches the same conclusion through independent methods speaks to the strength of European science—and to why open, robust data matters now more than ever.” According to a statement from Copernicus, warmer oceans have wide-ranging impacts on natural systems and human infrastructure, noting that “higher ocean temperatures keep the atmosphere warm for longer, provide extra energy to storms and increase evaporation, thus enhancing the potential for extreme precipitation and flooding. Ocean warming also contributes to sea level rise and ice melt, and stresses marine ecosystems.” With the onset of a new El Niño cycle—which tends to trigger more pronounced weather events worldwide—the continued increase of ocean temperatures is a serious concern of scientists. Wednesday’s report on ocean temperatures also arrives as record-breaking heat waves hit both Europe and North America, offering more evidence of the perils of an ever-hotter world that is being pushed to the brink by the burning of fossil fuels and the failure of governments worldwide to finally act against the fossil fuel industry that is driving the crisis. Surging ocean surface temperatures are "not unexpected,” Michael Meredith, an ocean scientist at the British Antarctic Survey, told CNN in response to the Copernicus report. “But the pace of warming we are now seeing is alarming.” From Common Dreams via This RSS Feed.

Record number of Russians want war in Ukraine to end now

This is where things will get difficult: Of course you’re right and Ukraine would be entitled to reparations etc. But the question is, who would actually enforce that, if anyone? The U.S.? Certainly not, since there’s a Putin puppet in the White House. China? Surely has absolutely no interest in punishing wars of aggression, given that they’ve more or less obviously set their sights on Taiwan? Europe? Would probably be happy to provide money for reconstruction, but won’t deploy its own soldiers to annex Russian territory as a substitute for reparations… That leaves only Ukraine itself, and its soldiers are war-weary after years of conflict, even though they’re currently winning, as they should. I don’t believe Ukraine could justify an offensive against Russian territory, either domestically or in terms of foreign policy… especially since such an offensive would naturally entail greater losses than the successful defense of its homeland. So in theory, you’re right, but in practice, I don’t know who would be able to enforce that, even if Russia withdraws from Ukraine. Being right and getting justice have been two different things for centuries, and for good reason.

Anon is a nostalgic gamer

Back in 1997 I bought the game KKnD (Krush, Kill n’ Destroy) in a local store for what would now be 110 dollars only to discover that it was broken and wouldn’t run on my machine and there was no way to get a patch for it.

Russia approved secret China military training at top level, sources say

cross-posted from: https://mander.xyz/post/54479911 Covert Sino-Russian military training signed off at high level Training was linked to war in Ukraine, Reuters reporting showed At least four generals took part, sources and documents say Training in China included biological and chemical warfare European officials grow more anxious about China-Russia defence ties China’s covert military training of Russian forces last year was personally approved by President Vladimir Putin’s defence minister and directly involved at least four Russian and Chinese generals. … A classified Russian document seen by Reuters directly referred to an internal decree issued by Defence Minister Andrei Belousov in August, 2025. It said that, in accordance with a decision by Belousov, a delegation from Russia’s armed forces travelled to China to participate in training exercises at People’s Liberation Army (PLA) facilities. … The same report detailed one of the training courses - a three-week session focused on radiological, chemical and biological protection at a military facility in Beijing in November. The report and a second one described and displayed images of Russian soldiers being lectured by a Chinese instructor, looking at a model nuclear reactor, and being taught about “chemical reconnaissance”, “radiation reconnaissance” and protecting ventilation systems from contamination. The inclusion of radiological, biological and chemical warfare training underlined the strategic nature of the exchanges, one of the European officials said, noting that the topic was particularly sensitive for militaries in general. … Beijing says it is neutral in Russia’s war with Ukraine, and presents itself as a peace mediator. According to a Reuters report last month citing European intelligence agencies and military documents, China in November trained around 200 Russian military personnel, some of whom have since joined the war in Ukraine. … The EU has already imposed sanctions on Chinese companies that it says support Russia’s war effort. A third official, in Brussels, told Reuters the bloc had to stop viewing China primarily through an economic lens, but focus on what Kallas called its role as a “decisive enabler of Russia’s war”. Both of the European officials, who asked not to be named because of the sensitivity of the information, identified the signatories of a July 2 agreement underpinning the training as Russian Major General Rustam Khusainov and Chinese Senior Colonel Sun Dayun. … CHINA’S LACK OF COMBAT EXPERIENCE Russia has accrued extensive experience in more than four years of combat in Ukraine, while China, with a vast and technologically advanced military, has not fought a war in decades. Internal Russian military reports seen by Reuters noted strengths and weaknesses in the training. One report on the training in Nanjing praised the standard of the equipment, the use of simulators and the instructors’ high theoretical knowledge while specifically noting China’s lack of combat experience. Other documents named three generals who took part. One Russian military document seen by Reuters listed the names of every participant in all of the courses - including those of senior officers - providing rank, date of birth, affiliation and level of security clearance in each case. Colonel General Rustam Muradov, deputy commander-in-chief of Russia’s land forces, led the Russian delegation, according to the list and a second military document seen by Reuters. According to the latter, Chinese Major General Li Jinsun, head of the PLA’s Military Academy of Radiological, Chemical and Biological Defence, took part in the opening of one of the courses. Russian Major General Vitaly Gerasimov took part in a course in Bengbu, according to the list.

Can't afford a steam controller. What's a good alternative that isn't stupid expensive?

8bitdo kinda ass. I have a gamesir cyclone 2 with dingle dongle (it has bluetooth but trust the dingle makes all the difference) and i love it. Only downside is battery goes flat relatively fast but otherwise its a stellar controller and the hall effect sticks changed everything for me. Potentiometers IN THE BIN. It also looks cool and is cheap. I have basically every controller at this point and its by far my favourite and I don’t say that lightly. With the dingle and software you can rebind buttons to keyboard keys which is something i have wanted natively in controller software for literally ever. I have the middle screenshot button bound to… screenshots. Finally console superiority on pc

'There’s something we’ve been dying to tell you': The best city builder of 2023, [Against the Storm] is getting a survival game set in the same world

Aginst the Storm was my favorite game design solution back when it came out. Solving the problem of city builders, where the early game is kinda fun until you set production chains up and the game slows down in the later parts, by just making it a roguelike, so you are always playing the (for some) more fun early game.
