I’m from Finland and usually the subtitles for English content are good. One challenging example that comes to mind is Baby Shower. Since this concept is mainly from the US, there isn’t an equivalent term in many languages. People here usually just use its English term, but I’ve seen subtitlers sometimes translate it as vauvasuihku, which literally means “baby shower”, but no one is going to understand that term. In one series, there was the phrase “What is this, my shower?”, when a pregnant woman was asked if she had already chosen a name for the baby. The subtitler had translated this literally as Mikä on tämä suihkuni? (≈What is this shower of mine?), completely losing the context.

I seldom ever go to thrift stores anymore because they now charge $5 for a used T-shirt. But I needed knives that I could destroy so I could make a knife sharpening jig. Before finding any knives I found this for a dollar less than a T-shirt. I make pizza every week. This is going to make that 7% easier. Hopefully another project will go according to plan and this will make it 90% easier. Anyway, I needed this. I was thinking I was going to have to make one but now I get to skip that.

A new report finds that a chronic lack of funding is undermining youth-led environmental work worldwide. The report, titled “Ecologies of Empowerment: Why and how to fund youth-led biodiversity action,” argues that a current lack of adequate funding for youth biodiversity conservation initiatives threatens development of future generations of conservation leadership and action. “Youth are already doing the work, restoring wetlands, defending territories, leading species conservation efforts, training next-generation leaders, and influencing global policy,” lead author of the report Félix Feide, told Mongabay in an email. “A core recognition of the report is that a biodiversity sector without a well-supported regeneration layer, will never be sustainable, and as a result our work will risk failing in the long term.” The report was compiled by the Global Youth Biodiversity Network, The Iris Project, Synchronicity Earth and the Global Landscapes Forum. The report authors surveyed 161 youth-led biodiversity initiatives from 57 countries and found that 93% of the contributors involved in such initiatives are volunteers. The findings also show that 85% of youth initiatives lack adequate funding. “If you are among the fortunate 15% of young people who are able to access funding for biodiversity conservation, that is wonderful,” report co-author Swetha Stotra Bhashyam told Mongabay. “But for the rest of us, the reality is that there is no quick-fix approach, and we can no longer approach this work in isolation.” Roughly 44% of surveyed organizations reported operating on less than $1,000 in 2024 and one-fifth of them had no funding. The island plays a central role in several parts of the physical infrastructure that AI depends on, including leading-edge semiconductor manufacturing, advanced chip packaging, AI server production, and the energy-efficient hardware systems needed to train and run advanced AI models. Taiwan now explicitly links semiconductors, AI, security technologies, and next-generation communications under its Five Trusted Industry Sectors plan, with the goal of making Taiwan an “indispensable and trusted technological partner” for democracies. The island is no longer presenting itself merely as a chip manufacturer; it is positioning itself as a trusted AI hardware ecosystem. For Canada, the opportunity is not to replicate Taiwan’s semiconductor model, but to build targeted partnerships around the adjacent capabilities that AI infrastructure increasingly needs, including AI-semiconductor research, photonics, compound semiconductors, critical minerals, and clean technology. The Communist Party of Turkey (TKP) has designated 4-12 July as Anti-NATO Summit in response to the NATO Summit taking place in Ankara within the same week. As part of the week’s activities, the party will organize marches and public events in several cities across the country, while also hosting an international summit in İstanbul. The summit will bring together communist and workers’ parties from NATO member states, along with representatives of the World Peace Council and the World Federation of Democratic Youth. I don’t think the US would provide a counterpart for MAD with Russia right now, but the UK or France could. Obviously the other nuclear powers might get involved as well, but a nuke in Ukraine is going to directly impact the UK and France, whereas it might only have an indirect effect on the others. I think the French government is more likely to, but I don’t know how their population would react to that. I live in but am not from the west of Germany, and people here have a surprisingly long memory about Russia (they also have a long memory about their own history and are grateful to Russia for ending Nazism, it’s just tempered by the several hundred years of history before the twentieth century and by the perceived brutality of the Soviet military, possibly due to propaganda,). Most Germans I talk to generally don’t want to go to war, but if they were going to, they’d want to fight Russia. My guess would be that France would likely be similar, but I don’t know.
