[News] Roblox support is coming back to Wine on Linux

Roblox updated their client some months back, and the anticheat didn’t work with Linux at all. However, it looks like they’re working on fixing this and the game is now playable on their very early access “zcanary” builds. I suspect this Lemmy Steam Deck community has an older average age, and as a result may not have that many Roblox players. But the popularity of the game is undeniable and having it work on Steam Deck again will be great for a lot of people.

Roblox Accused of Concocting Illegal Gambling Ring for Minors - Bloomberg Law

The complaint outlined the process by which minors can use the Roblox platform to gamble. After purchasing Robux through the platform, they can navigate to one of the gaming website defendants’ “virtual casinos” outside the Roblox ecosystem and link their Robux wallet to the gambling website, meaning Roblox can still keep track of electronic transfers, the lawsuit said. While Roblox could halt this “illegal gambling ring,” Colvin and Sass argued that it’s “significantly enriched” by the scheme. They allege that Roblox charges a 30% fee on the websites’ conversion of Robux back into dollars, raking in “millions in annual cash fees.”

Quit discord last year. Moved my core friend group onto Signal. Video streaming sucks but it addresses most of my other concerns. Potential alternatives and their issues: Guilded: owned by Roblox, faces same data/privacy concerns Discourse: backed by venture capital, same as above Revolt: slow development, no game streaming, otherwise decent Matrix: high technical barrier of entry, but promising. ‘Martyrdom or Bust:’ Texas Man Caught Plotting Terror Attack Through Roblox Chats

I think it’s notable what they didn’t find. No guns, weapons. No plane tickets. No bombs or bomb making equipment. No actual real plans, just aimless searches. This guy is young. You can find a picture of this guy online (I’m not going to link it. I think these sorts of sites should be illegal tbh). My guess: Mentally ill, possibly mentally disabled Lives with mom/dad etc, probably unemployed or unable to find a “good” job (Not a moral failing. American society is not giving many options for young adults to live “complete” lives). Mom/dad/whoever notices how angry he is and installs a keylogger, because they don’t want him to become a mass shooter, and he’s a grown man still on Roblox. Immediately confesses everything to FBI This guy needs a mental health intervention, not jail time. I have a hard time believing he is much of a public threat since they listed all the cool stuff they found in his house in the FBI charging documents but no guns/etc. This guy didn’t have a plan. Roblox gets banned indefinitely in Turkey over “child exploitation”

Kids deserve to have games like Roblox, but they don’t deserve to be exploited financially by them by child labour and gambling mechanics. As always, the answer to child welfare is to prevent them interacting directly with capitalism and markets. Children should always be given a communist upbringing with free food, shelter, clothes, healthcare, education, and recreation.
