Inside the Systemd Age Verification Debate: Developer Responds to Criticism

It’s not just porn though. A lot of countries want to restrict children’s access to social media - not just Facebook, etc., but also in games like Minecraft, Roblox and so on, as these also serve as social platforms. Which is actually fine and I agree with the restriction - kids shouldn’t be on Facebook, Snapchat, or even Roblox without supervision. Emphasis on supervision. Why? Because paedos are proven to be using these platforms as hunting grounds for grooming. Look at Roblox - even if you manage to set up parental controls (which is almost like if it’s intentionally made hard to do so), paedos can get around it by using items like signs, that allow free text entry, to communicate with kids. Rule #1: kids (and paedos) will always try to find a way around restrictions, so you want those to be as transparent (read: invisible) as possible. The problem is, these platforms are intentionally making it impossible for parents to supervise their children’s activities. Most parental controls are done in a “we had to do it so we did the bare minimum work and implemented every possible malicious tactic to deter people from using it” manner instead of actual parental protection being in mind. Then these very same companies go to governments and plead that the current methods aren’t working, parents aren’t using the tools, and you can’t push this level of moderation onto them - Meta execs literally admit in internal memos that at this point, they just have to accept that children will be hurt, because doing anything would affect bottom lines. Their solution? Make everyone identify themselves. But that’s not actually for protecting children - it’s to continue mining even more data, because simply said, data miners have already gotten everything from everyone they could, and the only way this can be tied together even more is by adding your real identity to all that data. Oh and all your adult related browsing too, of course. And the sentiment won’t change until one of these “super duper secure, totally unhackable, totally not collecting your PII with all the rest of your data” companies gets hacked, exposed for data mining to extremes, all through dumping a bunch of politicians’ and powerful people’s porn habits. You think Noem’s husband being revealed as a crossdresser was damaging? Imagine top politicians - especially conservatives - being outed as trans- or bestiality porn watching “degenerates” (putting it in quotes because in my opinion only the latter is problematic, but to conservacucks…), or that they’re a prolific CSAM fanfic writer, and so on. In my opinion, everyone should have the privacy to browse the kind of (legal) porn they want, without it being shouted out to the world. Or abused by corporations. Privacy is a key element of our lives, and it should be up to each person to decide how much they reveal to anyone. This entire ID enforcement can only end badly. Kids will find a way around it - they already do in the UK, I mean a simple VPN gets around it, and luckily not all governments want to implement this crap - and all it does is expose those who abide by the law, to even more data breaches and such.

Russians ask people not to burn down military enlistment offices, blaming Ukrainian scammers for it

I have two thoughts about this, and I’ll be the first to admit that I’m nowhere near qualified to say if either of them are even close to the mark. The first, and probably more optimistic, is that they’re trying to find people who are sympathetic to the pro-ukrainian/anti-putin cause and giving them sort of a plausible deniability to act on those sympathies. That way if they get caught they can say “No of course not, I would never help Ukraine, I love the motherland, the man on the phone said this was good for Russia and that’s why I did it” The second is that a lot of people out there are just plain stupid. When you listen to even regular run-of-the-mill phone scammers, people fall for some absolutely bullshit stuff, I really wouldn’t be too surprised if you could, with a little perseverance and choosing your words carefully, convince the same kind of people who think it’s perfectly reasonable that the IRS will take payments in the form of Roblox gift cards to go commit arson. EDIT: those 2 thoughts are based on the assumption that these scammers actually exist, there is also of course, option 3- Russia’s lying or is dumb, there are no scammers doing this, the people doing this know full well what they’re doing, and either A- this is just the government trying to cover it up with a bullshit story about scammers convincing people to do it, or B- that’s the story the people doing this are giving and the Russian government is actually dumb enough to believe it.

I cannot log into roblox dot com through dad’s VPN because I can’t rotate the penguin. Is this authoritarianism?

Game over? Industry suffers slowdown after decades-long winning streak

The huge popularity of free-to-play online games such as Fortnite and Roblox consumes hours of playtime that had previously been spent on $70 titles Wonder if people buy less of things if they are more expensive but not as good as the things they already have.

What are you boycotting right now and why? Are there any Boycotts you've ended?

Apple. I wouldn’t use their products if they were free. Roblox. As a parent, I’m not about to support a casino for kids. As a hobbyist game developer, I won’t support their exploitation of developers either. Lotteries. Im not against gambling in general, but I sure am against emotional manipulation, and taking advantage of those who don’t understand math.

*Permanently Deleted*

The quote I like the most on this subject is: “The metaverse isn’t a place; it’s a time in history when our digital identity and goods have as much or more importance than our real life versions.” I don’t think we’re there yet, but it also makes little (rational) sense that people spend money for virtual items in video games. I think the closest playable analogues are actually Fortnite and Roblox. Interconnected worlds with external avatars that cross them. You play experiences vs. games. There’s brand integration so Goku can fight John Wick. It’s pretty close?

Russia bans Roblox for promoting 'LGBT propaganda'

I don’t know the first thing about Roblox, but I find it hard to believe that a game company with that much global appeal apparently has been publishing content so blatantly pro-LGBTQ that Russia actually felt like they had to ban it for that reason. User made content? Maybe. But Russia has been trying pretty hard to secede from the US dominated tech market this year, banning a lot of Western internet sites with the idea of rolling their own. So I think your explanation is plausible.

Which CEOs are actually worth keeping around?

Making the claim that adult content = predators preying on children has a couple issues: Predators are incredibly rare, and it has been repeatedly shown that these claims of predators-behind-every-account are blown out of proportion for political scare reasons (see Satanic Panic, all of human history for more examples). Even if the above weren’t true, why on earth would those people be spending their time on adult content instead of, say, roblox or minecraft? You know, games for children, that children play? The debate over steam hosting adult content is some really regressive stuff. An alternative take, the one I hold, is “It’s really heartening to see a major content platform not giving in to the conservative moralists that view anime tiddies as somehow damaging to the fabric of society. Making sexuality a less shameful topic for discussion also, conveniently, reduces ‘shame’ as an effective lever for preying on children, and makes them more likely to come forward and tell people when they’re actually in danger”.
