You made the correct choice getting rid of Roblox and you don’t deserve to get flak for it, but I am allowed to parent my children how I see fit This is a shitty way to view the question. As someone with unique authority over the child, you are obliged to do your best at doing right be them. “But I am!” you say Then say that instead of this children-as-property shit
I’ve always thought roblox was dumb, but its kind of just a playground. Kids need a playground where their imaginations are free to grow and thy’re in control. Somewhere they can interact and learn how to socialize safely with other children. When i was a kid, that was a walk to the park with friends to kick a ball around, riding a bicycle somewhere, exploring, and working out some dumb activities to do… Honest question: how comfortable are you with the idea of just letting your kids go to the park by themselves for hours on end? For better or worse, it seems like sandbox creativity games like roblox are filling that void for some kids. Not saying roblox is an answer to a problem, just that kids seem to be utilizing it as a playground where they get to be creative and in control. Not sure why I’m bringing this up. It’s just a thought that occurred to me recently.
Cell towers go down along with fiber and coax. No cell phones or internet in a modern home with no VHS, DVD or Blu-Ray. Kids don’t know about broadcast television. Just that his Fortnite/Minecraft/Roblox doesn’t work. Family would come home to a feral child and a destroyed home after the kid goes batshit without supervision.
My kid (13) surprised me the other day and said he wanted to try Linux. He has seen me forever using it and got scared about W10 getting hacked or something so thought of trying it out. I handed over to him my Fedora 43 (KDE plasma) install USB drive and once installed the problems began. The monitor couldn’t be set to native resolution, and Steam didn’t want to run. Turns out that there is no wayland compatibility with the Radeon Polaris RX480. What a bummer, that card is perfectly fine for what he does on his PC. We tried with the cinnamon version and that is working fine. He even has roblox running. Tl;Dr: Wayland isn’t compatible with older hardware that most casual windows users are mostly going to be using.
Gotta get them started early on the capitalism train. Prove to them that money makes right. If you can buy it, it’s morally good! :) If it doesn’t make a profit, it’s morally bad! :( If you can’t get exactly what you want, don’t work for it, just buy it. Money is the only thing you need. You don’t need friends. Or family. Or a community. You see they are all just trying to get your money! Seriously, we are brainwashing people with these fucked up game mechanics. These are very young impressionable children. All of this is ignoring that pedophillic aspect of Roblox which is also horrific.
The difference is Discord and Facebook don’t allow users under 13. Roblox does About the only internet consumer protections that exist in the US are for under-13
That’s disingenuous as hell. It’s about the motifs of the genre and what the game was aiming to accomplish after it’s predecessor. And the Roblox video was only 28ish minutes. The rest of it is on Tommy “my mother’s very proud” Tallarico. And both deserve the full 3 hours.
I share my steam linrary with my two kids. Gave them 200+ games. They still play Fortnite and Roblox because that is what their friends play. When I was young the biggest games were single player and you shared stories with your friends. Now you play with them online.
There are no checks whatsoever, no email or phone number required, no verification options—it just hands you an account for a 99-year-old, with full access to all chat features. (It took maybe five clicks from having no account to being able to play Blood & Gore.) Come on now Kotaku. I was a kid once on the internet. I lied about my age once to sign up for Neopets, which had text forums, private messages and user-created pages. You could even use HTML and hotlink images. It really wasn’t a big deal because my parents paid attention to what I did online, and the audience of the website was just children or people who wanted to play a simple game. My mom ended up playing it, so she must have known I lied about my age to get access. She had hella neopoints. For content marked 17+, you do need to verify your age with documentation WHY IS THERE CONTENT FOR 17+ ON ROBLOX? Isn’t this the TRUE child safety problem? Why do this at all? Why attract people looking for 17+ content on a platform for children??? I read that Hindenburg report, the entire platform is a mess. This company deserves to fail and those investors deserve to be left holding the bag.
This should be horrifying news to anyone who knows about Roblox’s abuses of child developers and appalling content moderation policy. Here’s hoping these are just empty corporate promises and not something more.
