it’s not Home Depot’s fault we cut down all the old growth wood by the 1950s. Builders should be sorting the lumber and returning bad pieces…but nothing a sheet of drywall can’t hide. But Home Depot wood in Canada is the best quality, kiln dried. With softwood tariffs, US yards are scraping the bottom of the barrel and shipping crap that would have been shredded.

Man accused in killing of UW student Juniper Blessing found not competent

A Bellevue man accused of stabbing and killing University of Washington student Juniper Blessing will receive mental health treatment at Western State Hospital after an evaluator found he is not competent to stand trial. Christopher Leahy, 31, has not entered a plea in his first-degree premeditated murder case and his arraignment was pushed several times to evaluate his competency. On Monday, King County Superior Court Judge Joe Campagna adopted findings from a state psychiatric evaluator that support Leahy is incompetent, meaning he is not able to understand the nature of the proceedings or aid his attorney in his defense. Leahy was charged with premeditated murder after he allegedly stabbed Blessing more than 40 times in the laundry room of her off-campus apartment complex, Nordheim Court, on May 10. Authorities do not believe the stabbing of Blessing, a transgender woman, was a hate crime. The 31-year-old allegedly stalked another female student and resident of Nordheim Court and returned to the neighborhood two days after Blessing was killed. When someone is found “incompetent,” the state is required to offer them short-term treatment — typically a combination of legal education and psychiatric medication — in an effort to restore their competency. If the defendant ultimately cannot be found competent, the charges are dismissed and a civil process to commit them to mental healthcare might begin. After a brief stint in “competency restoration,” it’s possible that Leahy could be sent back to jail to proceed through the criminal system.

Windows 2000 was kinda NT 5.0, but brought in a lot of what made Windows 98 great. It was marketed as for servers and business users, but it was the most stable Windows so it was good for everyone. My university gave out these MS multi-install DVDs which meant anyone could use any Microsoft product, so most of my comp sci class was using Windows 2000.

Sony erases digital content from libraries; we're reminded we don’t own what we buy

It came to me last night, how all this AI and the difficulties obtaining hardware. This is all them trying to end the idea of ownership, at least of your data. They want to control all the data, so everything you do, every picture you take, every game you play, every essay you write, will be only available in the cloud. We are getting close to the point where are must pay for every bit of our own data that we access. This is the inevitable result. I’m very glad I’ve spent years building my own library of content. I just hope I can continue getting replacement hardware to keep it alive.

Beets Report July 1

The beet crop is growing nicely. But we remain vigilant against the deer. Despite their best efforts, the string beans are holding their front. And have been reported as growing back. I have 7 nice peppers and some tiny tomatoes are appearing. There has been ongoing discussions about investing in a paintball gun to repel the bandits. Scouting, has reported that 2 fawns have been sighted and added to the gang. But no firm consensus been reached or decision made by upper management. We may need to wait for the inevitable assault on the flowers. By then I fear it will be too late. Report from the Northern front July 1 2026

If you could only play 10 games for the rest of your life, which would you choose?

Related to a post I made last year, but a little different because (1) you get to choose 10 now instead of 5, and (2) other games don’t get deleted, you just aren’t able to play them, so you don’t need to think about the good of humanity or anything, purely just selfish picks because it only impacts you. A couple notes: Any equipment necessary to play the games, you’re obviously allowed to have You can play any DLC for the games you choose You’re not allowed to make any games for you to play. If you make video games, either as a career or hobby, only other people are allowed to play them Mods are allowed, but you’re not allowed to make any for you to play. You can try to commission someone else to make them for you, though If there was historically a trilogy, for example, that now is sold on a major storefront (Steam, Xbox, PlayStation) as a single game (such as Mass Effect or Hitman) that counts as one game now. Game bundles, though, do not count. Basically, if it’s in one entry in your steam/xbox/ps library, it’s one game I’m interested to see what this community chooses, and hopefully it’s different enough from my old post to warrant some good discussion here.

US Supreme Court just blew up EU-US Data Transfers

Watching The Man in the High castle hits very different now. People over here are seeing what is going on in the USA but they might still vote for Reform and then we are done. The rich will make sure that they control everything including every citizen. Palantir, Musk, Bezos,Thiel and all the other monsters will plunder what is left of the worlds resources and retreat to their many bunkers or Mars. They think AI will fix the earth and according to them millions will die in the process of them remaking the world into a Technocratic feudal system.And for that they want all the data till they know more about you than you do yourself. At least that’s what they have in their project 2025 and beyond as a plan. They want only the “right” people to survive. It makes horrifying reading, they think of empathy and kindness as big massive weakness,they want the sick,disabled ,lgbtq and others to die as thy are seen as a burden on their system. Sorry for the rant but I am old and these people scare me.

The fact you see it like this makes me feel you’re not autistic, maybe even enjoying company with people When’s the last time you said something normal and had everyone smirk at the same time or pause for awkwardly long moment just for every following interaction of you to be made a joke in the group or to be isolated or not invited from any meetings as to not ruin it I don’t really know how you see the world but it can’t be that positively if you don’t value respect, so i only hang out with kind people, that yes also do the same awkward reactions but followed with care and love instead, which makes it feel forced at times because it’s the only type of reaction, kindness Not having to consider all of this is much more mentally calming and not as tiresome to deal with from managing people’s feelings as well, and i’ve grown to only see human interaction as bodily need to satisfy every now and then rather than something to look forwards to

Some news about the OpenPrinter project

The OpenPrinter project (see the CrowdSupply project’s page) aims to create an open source repairable printer. It has some interesting features. I was starting to believe the project was dead but they gave some news on their progress today : https://www.crowdsupply.com/open-tools/open-printer/updates/progress-update-and-details-about-our-nomination-for-a-french-design-award. I post it here since the project is lead by french people and would be an alternative to many printer manufacturer.
