Wife of Ex-Nepali Prime Minister Burnt Alive, Parliament Set on Fire

This is being referred to as the Gen-Z Protests by all media, not just the above. It comes from Nepali media (जेन-जे विरोध, literally ‘Gen-J protests’) and possibly has a different tone or connotations in Nepali, I don’t know. There’s been some discontent in Nepal for a while now, the government being viewed as authoritarian and corrupt. But what’s kicked this off is the government banning social media apps. So, all these social media companies had a week to register with the government, because of a new law, but most didn’t. So the government banned them and blocked access (nearly all the big ones - apparently tiktok registered and stayed up, as far as I can tell). This happened on the 4th September. Some people think that curtailing social media use is a direct attempt to stop people drawing attention to corruption: the leading hashtag in Nepal was apparently ‘#NepoKids’ (as in nepotism). I don’t know if that is in English or in translation though. Yesterday, on the 8th, there were big protests and demonstrations. It’s hard to get a breakdown of what exactly happened - I don’t speak Nepali - but protesters tried to enter parliament, the military responded with tear gas, and before long 19 protesters had been killed. This obviously sparked a reaction, and it’s still ongoing. The PM has resigned, some officials have apparently fled or tried to flee the country. Lots of places are being set on fire, including prisons (it seems like prisoners are escaping rather than being burnt alive). Some sites say that the social media apps are back online and unblocked now, I don’t know.

I think like a lot of people the reason I’m putting up with the growing pains of a decentralized network, the fragmentation of communities that come with it, and sync issues across instances is because we want to try something that isn’t run by corporations that views users as something to sell off to the highest bidder. If I wanted to deal with a centralized large user base why wouldn’t I just skip this whole fediverse thing and go straight to Meta or reddit or Twitter or tiktok that is way more user friendly? I’m not here because I want another reddit clone that ends up being run or is influenced by another billionaire asshole down the line.

Peru goes to the polls Sunday, April 12, to begin choosing its new president. The scenario is marked by both uncertainty and popular disillusionment after years of political crises, impeachments, and corruption scandals. Since 2018, the country has had eight presidents, leading to extreme instability in Peruvian political life, a reflection of a frenetic succession of interrupted mandates in recent years. Parliament has impeached four and forced two others to resign. The population demonstrates strong skepticism and disinterest due to the history of systemic corruption, and analysts point out that this is one of the most complex disputes in the country’s recent history, with no clear favorites. In this context, Peruvian youth are seen as fundamental in the election, which has a record number of 35 candidates, but without options that excite them. Ads were already there for years - for Facebook, TikTok, Candy Crush, and who knows what else. I would say this is embarrassingly unprofessional, but the truth is this is just normal these days - normalized by Facebook and Android - and I’m just old and used to better software. I switched to Linux the same year they appeared.

I hope the enshittification of TikTok incentivizes people to stay on Xiaohongshu. Heck, the fact that Xiaohongshu makes it easy to enjoy the platform without getting addicted to it should hopefully encourage people who approved the TikTok ban because they didn’t approve of its addictive algorithm of slop to go on this platform instead and never look back.
