The Mirror - A Godot fork meant to rival Roblox/UEFN just went open source

This is kind of huge, isn’t it? I’ve been seeing this engine around for a while (it was still in closed alpha I believe) and it seemed really well done. It’s a Godot fork that’s intended to be a simpler experience like Roblox, where it has visual scripting, handles all the multiplayer itself, and allows you to create worlds collaboratively with friends and co-workers in real-time. The only thing people seemed iffy about was monetization and its closed-source nature, but now that it’s here and FOSS, anyone think it might blow up and be a great introduction to game development for beginners and kids? I’ll probably test it and see how it is later, but it does seem like it’s still in alpha.

The Feds Are Coming for “Extremist” Gamers

Gaming companies are coordinating with the FBI and Department of Homeland Security to root out so-called domestic violent extremist content, according to a new government report. Noting that mechanisms have been established with social media companies to police extremism, the report recommends that the national security agencies establish new and similar processes with the vast gaming industry. The exact nature of the cooperation between federal agencies and video game companies, which has not been previously reported, is detailed in a new Government Accountability Office report. The report draws on interviews conducted with five gaming and social media companies including Roblox, an online gaming platform; Discord, a social media app commonly used by gamers; Reddit; as well as a game publisher and social media company that asked the GAO to remain anonymous. The Anti-Defamation League has testified to Congress multiple times about extremists’ use of gaming platforms. In 2019, ADL’s then-senior vice president of international affairs, Sharon Nazarian, was asked by Rep. Ted Deutch, D-Fla., if gaming platforms “are monitored” and if there’s “a way AI can be employed to identify those sorts of conversations.”

What happens if the UK requires age verification for VPN’s

I found out students in my kids highschool were using VPNs to play roblox on the network (bypassing IT’s block). They way they did it was 1. Search “VPN” in the app store or play store. 2. Install the first result. That’s probably a good model of what mass adoption of VPNs would look like. my own kids got a tailscale app connecting to my headscale network in 10 minutes and me wiping my brow that I dodged a bullet.

Risks to children playing Roblox ‘deeply disturbing’, say researchers

If you don’t watch what your kids play, your kids will find something inappropriate to play. This isn’t just a Roblox problem. Not suggesting Roblox shouldn’t have better moderation (holy hell should they) but this isn’t unexpected. Should it be? Maybe. Could they realistically do it? Probably not without some serious vetting changes—changes that would make “experience makers” have to wait to get their games approved. Lock down the accounts so they can’t see server chat or get messages from randoms. Only allow your (parent) account to add friends. Play with them. Be present, at least somewhat, when they play. Source: Play Roblox with my kids all the time.

The shirts that Noob designed and sold were worth more than 20 Tix

The surplus value went to Builderman 'cause he owned Noob’s Place’s bricks And thousands of Robloxians like Noob did every day Checked Robux conversion rates — alas, Tix went away! For Builderman is bourgeoisie, and Noobs are merely proles: That is the class contrast they have, e’en Guests know these two roles!

Nearly half of US kids want in-game currency this Christmas

Gamer uncle of kids with non-gamer parents here. I did what I could. My niece’s taste in games is impeccable. She’s 13 and among her favorites are Hollow Knight, the Ori games, Inscryption, Cult of the Lamb, and of course big mass kids appeal games like Pokemon and Mario. My nephew (9) is a lost cause. It’s all Roblox and mobile child casino garbage and he doesn’t have even the slightest interest in anything else. I’m pretty sure my partner and I are the only people in his life who have never given him Robux.

First PC for My Son

So my eight-year-old wants a desktop PC. He’s kind of a budding gamer, but right now, he almost exclusively plays Roblox on his iPad and will definitely carry this over to the PC. As he gets older, he may want to graduate to more demanding titles. On the other hand, he may also get bored with it and stick with consoles and mobile gaming. I don’t want to spend a ton on a PC for a very young child who may not take to PC gaming seriously, but I also want to get something that might be upgradeable as he grows if he wants to join the PC master race. In my research, I came across this. The recommendation I saw in PCMag that led me to the PC above suggested that the integrated graphics with the Ryzen 5 5600G could serve as a starting point for low level gaming and allow me to spend on a GPU card later if it’s justified. The price and functionality appear to offer exactly the path I want. I’ve seen other, more expensive versions of this pre-built, and I’ve also looked at the possibility of building it myself. I like this particular chip because it’s only a generation or so back and it still appears to be well-regarded by the community. If I went with one of the cheap old workstation conversions, I’d be limited by proprietary hardware and fewer options–a lot of the stuff out there, especially Intel stuff, is very old and won’t be able to run Windows 11 when it becomes necessary. What I’m finding suggests this path could see us through quite a few years to come and allow us to upgrade as needed. Am I barking up the wrong tree here, or does this seem like it could work the way I want? UPDATE: I’ve decided to buy the pre built deal I found with the 6500G. I would like to go to a fancier build, but the price of the AM5 chips and motherboards takes them off of the table for me right now. I think what I’m getting will be good enough as some of you have said. Thanks to everyone for your help! If y’all are interested, I’ll post an update when I get it.

Groomblox devising new ways to exploit children.

If they’re young, keep a close eye on their activities, especially over discord. And you should definitely check out the several documentaries by People Make Games of child labor exploitation and grooming in Roblox dev. https://youtu.be/_gXlauRB1EQ?si=-wblBzeqNk_v8ZU5 https://youtu.be/vTMF6xEiAaY?si=7vFrxMEb4YK-DJAa

Roblox banned in Russia for hosting LGBTQ+ content

Roskomnadzor claims Roblox contains content that will have a “negative impact on the spiritual and moral development of underage users.” Remove the “spiritual and moral” part of this and I’d agree 100% with them lol. Anyway, rare win for Roblox I guess.

Who Is Still Inside the Metaverse?

I remember watching my half‐sister play Active Worlds all the way back during the dot com boom, and aside from the lack of virtual reality it sounds like it was almost identical to this: level‐building, character creation, custom textures and models, vanities like pubs and rollercoaster rides, but it had a substantially larger userbase and consequently more content. (It probably even looked better than this, too.) That was a little over two decades ago. It should be no surprise to anybody that this latest entry in the glorified chatroom genre was dead on arrival: the only new thing that it brings is the virtual reality aspect, which isn’t good enough and just makes accessing this product more expensive. Everything else that this offers has already been done and done better in Active Worlds, Second Life, Roblox, and other glorified chatrooms that have more than umpteen times the content of this gimmicky crap. They don’t even care enough to moderate it properly! It would be awesome if this bankrupted Meta, but I’m sad to say that they’ll probably have to do a lot worse than this. Maybe Elon Musk can give Meta a few pointers—or seize it himself.
