Homestead Strike Begins (1892) Fri Jul 01, 1892 The Homestead Strike was an industrial lockout and strike which began on this day in 1892, culminating in a battle between the Amalgamated Association of Iron and Steel Workers and private security forces of the Carnegie Steel Company. Unlike earlier strikes in U.S. history, such as the Great Railroad Strike of 1877, the Homestead Strike was organized and purposeful, a sign of how labor agitation would develop in the modern era. In order to break the union at the Carnegie Steel Factory, Henry Clay Frick locked union workers out of the factory on June 28th. On July 1st, thousands of workers, skilled and non-skilled, went on strike. Frick hired the Pinkerton Agency to guard strikebreakers brought in via barge (the factory was on a river), but strikers patrolled a ten-mile stretch of the river to prevent them from making it to the factory. On July 6th, the Pinkertons attempted to land under cover of darkness around four in the morning, however thousands of striking workers and sympathizers were waiting for them on the riverbank. When the agents tried to land, gunfire erupted, killing four people and injuring twenty-three on both sides. The Pinkertons surrendered, and many were beaten unconscious after leaving the boat. The strike was forcibly put down by state militia, resulting in a defeat for the workers. The Amalgamated Association of Iron and Steel Workers collapsed, and its workers returned in August. Rescued stray coughing (?) - I have a vet appointment in 2 weeks

Send the video to the vet. Ask them if it is an emergency. Don’t wait. Coughing in cats can be a sign of major heart issues. Cats rarely cough if they are simply congested. If the problem was just congestion, they would probably be sneezing more, and possibly breathing through their mouth. I’m not a vet, but I’ve had two cats with heart issues. One of them also had seasonal allergies. So I do have first-hand experience with these kinds of symptoms. That’s why I say to contact the vet and share the video now.

Sidder og læser en artikel (Politiken, paywalled) fra sidste uge om, at Meta fjerner mindre skadeligt indhold end de tidligere gjorde, fra deres platforme. Det er deprimerende nok i sig selv, men helt i tråd med hvad Zuckerberg i januar 2025 annoncerede de ville gøre. I bunden af artiklen nævnes det, at en rapport fra Nordisk Råd i januar 2026 har vist, at 17 procent af danskerne tror, at Facebook er et public service-medie. og, at 22 procent tror, at Facebook har en chefredaktør, der tager ansvar for indholdet. De adspurgte er danskere over 16 år. Rapporten der er tale om er Nordisk Råds Nordic Media Literary Survey, publiceret i januar 2026. Halvdelen af de adspurgte vidste godt, at Facebook er finansieret af reklamer, men at hver femte dansker over 16 år tror, at Facebook har en redaktør der kan drages til ansvar for indholdet finder jeg yderst bekymrende. I aldersgruppen 25-34 år er det hver fjerde der tror det. Vi taler om mennesker der er vokset op med Metas platforme. While some have picked less conspicuous official names such as “Red Tape Relief Project” and “Fiscal Responsibility Program,” all were announced as “DOGE-inspired.” There is 100% a reason a gigantic shadow network of wealthy individuals linked to the heritage foundation is quietly pushing policies at state levels across the country while hiding behind claims of small government and transparency. By the time the federal government completely collapses they will have everything in place to start over with their new network of support built and ready to go: New laws, new military forces, a new secret police (DOGE task forces), and a new America created to protect the interests of the wealthiest individuals and corporations on the planet. This has been in the works for decades, and even if we can’t stop them, we should not be quiet about this, and we should definitely not be making things any easier on them. Brauche mehr Perspektiven - Frage zu einer verdammt beschissenen Situation (CW: sexualisierte Gewalt, toxischer Narzissmus, missbräuchliche Beziehungen, psychische Störungen)

Respekt an die Energie, die du da rein steckst. Ich finde schwierig guten Rat zu geben, und wär an deiner stelle auch sehr überfordert. Ich konnte grade nicht ganz aus dem Kontext lesen ob die betroffene Person schon in psychologist h therapeutischer Behandlung ist, das wäre mein Rat an der stelle. Auch für dich vielleicht interessant damit umgehen zu lernen falls es dich belastet. Ein Vorschlag wäre euch zusammen hin zu setzen und therapeutenlisten durch zu gehen und mal dir besten 10 zu kontaktieren. Eine kurze mail reicht oft, vielleicht mit kurzer Beschreibung der situation. Die Krankenkasse biete auch eine Ärzte Suche, um einen möglichst schnellen termin zu finden. Die meisten uni klinken zur Psychologie haben auch sehr spontane Beratungstermine wo oft noch auszubildende Therapeuten sind, das könnte vielleicht für dich oder zur erstem Beratung spannend sein. Konkreten Rat für die Situation kann ich nicht geben. Es klingt als hätte sie Angst vor den folgen der Trennung und Anzeige und Verlustangst. Vielleicht hilft es für 1-2 Tage räumlichen Abstand zu haben um was anderes zu sehen und nicht im normalen Trott zu stecken? Ich Wünsche dir viel kraft und Erfolg. Ich finde es sehr gut, dass du so klar deine grenze erkannt und kommuniziert hast

Convinced my partner to install Linux on her laptop. Going with Zorin OS. Thoughts?

It’s not tweaks on top of gnome its back end GNOME config done by Zorin team. GNOME is highly customizable just not easily the user facing way like KDE. I dont use Zorin but in trials I’d say it is a solid choice; they are working at making it a solid stable corporate distro, including the Grid Product for mass system deployment and management.

De 1111 kroner dækker de månedlige udgifter på 505 kroner, som jeg netop har opjusteret en smule baseret på de nuværende udgifter. Det dækker over 56.2 EUR til Hetzner, cirka 12 USD til Backblaze og 72,5 DKK årligt til Punktum dk. Derved er kassebeholdningen steget til 12756 hvilket giver en runway på over 25 måneder. This Apple Lie at the grocery store

Palm oil is a butter substitute. Every baked product at the grocery store that used to be made with butter is now made with palm oil, because it is cheaper. Palm oil is made up of long highly-saturated fatty acids that cause it to be solid at room temperature, giving it physical properties very similar to butter, making it suitable as a substitute. However saturated fatty acids are bad for your health. Butter is also saturated fat and is also somewhat bad, but palm oil is much worse because the varieties of fatty acids it contains are much different from animal fat fatty acids and the human body metabolizes them differently, so they have a much higher impact. Similar physical properties but worse health properties! It is nearly impossible to find frozen baked goods that are still made with butter. This pie claims to be made with healthy ingredients, and specifically touts its butter content, but it conveniently omits mentioning palm oil entirely. Since palm oil appears first on the ingredients list before butter, that means there is more of it. Possibly almost the entire “butter-like” fraction of the pie consists of palm oil. This pie alone contains 400% daily value saturated fat, which is terrible for long-term health. I love apple pies and I was planning to eat this pie as my sole food over the course of 2 days for my One-Meal-A-Day (OMAD), but I’m not willing to risk eating palm oil. Thanks for nothing for getting my hopes up, pie box! traditional wholesome German ingredients like palm oil palm oil - just the way grandma used to make at home contains memories of butter I’m sure someone below will mention how palm oil is also bad for the environment and bad for the farmers and bad for the economy.
