Embracer Boss Mulls Increasing the Price of Video Games Beyond $70 - IGN

The controversial boss of Embracer Group has discussed the topic of increasing the price of video games beyond $70 amid rising development costs and a brutally competitive market. Lars Wingefors, who has laid off thousands of staff, shut multiple studios, and sold off subsidiaries in the last financial year, told GI.biz that pushing the price of video games higher is something Embracer has discussed, and that doing so would mean more video games would be released. “I’m not saying you can’t increase the price,” Wingefors told the site. "But the reality is no one has tried it. If you create an enormous role-playing game, for example, with 100 or 150 hours of gameplay, very polished, and a unique experience, would the consumer be willing to pay more? If they would, they would have more products potentially coming to market. But no one tried it. “It’s something we have been discussing, but we are currently sticking to the practice of the industry. Would it be that one [company] one day that tries to increase pricing? That remains to be seen.” The triple-A video game industry collectively raised the price of its video games with the launch of the current console generation in 2020, but in recent months the $70 price point has become the topic of much discussion amid the industry’s ongoing struggles. Recent data points to gamers tending to favor older, live service games, such as Fortnite, Roblox, and Call of Duty, leaving less room for new, full price games. Indeed, Embracer has seen a number of high-profile flops, including the recently released horror revival Alone in the Dark, which Wingefors said was “a big investment” that “didn’t catch enough consumers”. “I think the industry is facing the same problem as all other industries, with inflation and rising costs of game development,” Wingefors added. "And it’s been hard to increase pricing [in] premium PC/console. The pricing of those products has been the same for many years, which means that the margin to succeed is less, and on top of that, there is a higher cost of capital. Ultimately when you make big investments or games, you need to play with teams you are very confident in, or with IPs you own or control, and have the full financial income. “On top of that, the consumers have more content than ever to choose from. They love to engage in established IPs they’ve been playing before, which means it’s harder to have them trying out new things or new IPs. It’s just something we’re all facing. It’s a reality which we have been adapting to over the past year, and we will continue to adapt to that reality.” "The pricing of those products has been the same for many years… Wingefors’ comments suggest Embracer is waiting for another video game company to go first, essentially, before it follows suit with a price hike. But what company could justify such a move, which would likely be met with a backlash from gamers? Rockstar is currently the subject of debate around this topic, with the Take-Two-owned company preparing to release GTA 6 late 2025. Rockstar has yet to announce a price for GTA 6, or how the game will be sold, but there are few other games that would move the needle quite as much as this behemoth. In November 2023, Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick said video game frontline prices “are still very, very low” compared to other forms of entertainment “because we offer many hours of engagement”. “The value of the engagement is very high,” Zelnick added. “So, I think the industry, as a whole, offers a terrific price-to-value opportunity for consumers. That doesn’t necessarily mean that the industry has pricing power or wants to have pricing power. However, there is a great deal of value offered.”

Hate crusades in gamer "activism" ? What's actually happening?

Gamer’s traditionally have less political sophistication than a dead dog. Recent highly visible gamer moves have included review bombing Helldivers, screaming about not being able to see both labia t the same time in Stellar Blade, and whatever that Sweet Baby/DEI thing I haven’t bothered to look at is. Idk what the scale of this roblox bs is, but i am interested in the phenomena of game rage campaigns where they get extremely self righteously mad over strange, often trivial shit and make it their entire life for a few days. Wtf is happening? Is this echoes of gamegate a decade later?

in most circumstances, might come across as all-too-familiar hyperbole from a member of government looking for a moral panic to latch onto. 72% of devs believe Steam has a monopoly on PC games, according to study

Steam doesn’t even fit the criteria of the FTC definition. It wasn’t Steam that raised the price of games to $70, it was actually done by Take-Two followed by Sony, Activision and Nintendo. And it was Microslop who first tried to normalize the $80 price tag before Nintendo swooped in and made it a reality. And Steam didn’t tell Team Cherry to raise the price of Hollow Knight which is why it released with a $20 price tag. In fact during it’s entire “monopolistic” stage Steam has never set the price of any game except their own (which they priced a market price). Even the 30% cut wasn’t pioneered by Steam, 30% was roughly what retailers used to take. Valve simply rolled with what was a reasonable cut back in the day because they were effectively replacing retailers. As for the rest, I don’t know you’ve been living under a rock but some the most successful games today are not on Steam. Minecraft is not on Steam, Roblox is not on Steam, Fortnite will never be on Steam, Blizzard games (except Diablo IV and OW2) are not on Steam, Riot games are not on Steam. But maybe you meant indie games that haven’t made a name for themselves? We don’t know if those games would’ve been more successful had they released on Steam but Vintage Story seems to be doing just fine without being on Steam and the same could be said about Starsector. The upcoming Hytale game doesn’t seem to be releasing on Steam either. Steam is not a requirement for success. And of course you can always try to partner up with Sony or Nintendo and release PS or Switch exclusives. Steam has a market dominant position on PC because Valve understands the market they’re in while their competitors in the PC space don’t. However in the wider gaming space Steam is hardly a monopoly. Steam Deck has sold about 4 millions units (numbers from Feb 2025) and people talk like it’s going to change the gaming landscape, meanwhile Microslop has sold almost 30 million units (numbers from the end of 2024) of Xbox series S and X and this gen of Xbox is considered a failure. The scale at which Microslop, Sony and Nintendo operate is completely different. In the wider gaming space Valve is in no position to set prices or exclude competitors because Valve has extremely low market penetration outside the PC landscape. Steam can’t even influence the PC market because it’s an open platform. Hypothetically if games on Steam started costing $100 then developers could just release games on their own and set their own price. Furthermore Steam is in competition on the PC marketplace and also in competition with consoles because at the end of the day people have a limited time to play games and they’re going to play games on whatever platform is most comfortable to them. If Steam stops being comfortable and Sony or Nintendo pull their sticks out of their asses (I think is Microslop beyond saving) why wouldn’t people slowly transition away from Steam and into console gaming the same way we’re seeing a trend of console players very slowly transitioning into console + PC gamers. You have to put magnifiers on so the only thing you see is Steam and then add blinders to narrow view of the wider gaming space down to PC to be able to make some a statement about Steam being an monopoly. And if I just look into the horizon then the earth also seems flat. Just because I ignore all other evidence and focus solely on the perception that the earth is flat, it doesn’t mean the earth is flat. The same way just because you ignore everything else and perceive Steam as monopoly it doesn’t mean Steam is a monopoly. EDIT: mentioned exceptions to the Blizzard example and cleared up some wording.

A third of people think asexuality can be cured with conversion therapy.

This is why a lot of allos are completely insane and potential rapists since they also tend to do vile stuff just because they can’t comprehend that people people can not give a f about anyone sexually. These people get offended at asexual or potentially asexual fictional characters, let alone irl and they also make up shit like this. But just remember that Nikola Tesla and Isaac Newton, some of the greatest minds in history were asexual, and also lived well into their 80s.

My friend didn't have a great experience with Linux

I have been daily driving Linux for over two years now and I have switched distros many times. So, when my friend bought a new laptop, I convinced him to install Linux Mint on it. I asked him if he wanted to dual boot, he said no because it would fill up all his storage. We installed Linux Mint. The other day, he wanted to play FIFA 17 on his computer. After 5 whole hours of troubleshooting we were able to get FIFA running smoothly with some issues. Next, he wanted to play Roblox. I guided him through the process of installing Waydroid and libhoudini, only to discover that Roblox would run at 10 FPS. With Minecraft, it wasn’t any better. It took us 1 hour to get it working (not skill issue, he wanted to play cracked through Prism Launcher). Now, he wants to go back to Windows 10. I have already told him about dual boot, but he has only 256GB of storage and he wants to play a lot of games. What should I do? Install Windows to his laptop, install some other Linux distro, or try to convince him more about dual boot? Thanks in advance and sorry for the essay. UPDATE: Of course I will help him install Windows on his computer if he wants so, I don’t want to force him to use Linux after all. I just wanted him to give it a try, and maybe daily drive it, if he can. EDIT: Because for some reason it was misunderstood, let me clarify it here. Roblox ran with poor performance on Waydroid, not Minecraft. I just said that the installation of Prism Launcher cracked was difficult. After that, Minecraft ran smoothly without any problems.

As someone who plays Roblox, I can say that this is partially true. They won’t presence the assassination, they’ll be the ones making it (if they buy the gamepass) and Charlie didn’t broke into pieces btw

Things I want to be functional in Linux

I’ve been trying various Linux flavours every year for 10 years or so. The last year I tried Arch, then EndeavourOS, which has been my most successful Linux exploration I’ve ever had, and given me huge hope. However, there are still a few things preventing me switching it to my default OS. I’ll put aside Games that need Anti Cheat, as I doubt that will ever be fully fixed, unless Governments force game devs to support more than just Windows. Here is what doesn’t work for me: Streaming services like NowTV. (Works in Windows in browser only) DRM proected VST’s for use with Reaper (not via Wine) Roblox (Using Waydroid was not very successful) Office 365 (I like Libreoffice and OnlyOffice but fact is Word and Excel are just required for some stuff)

Statement on Stop Killing Games - VIDEOGAMES EUROPE

Since when have rights holders ever been held responsible for the actions of online players? The only instances I can think of are when games exclusively target minors, like Roblox. And in what crazy world would those scant responsibilities carry over to community servers after official support was ended? What a cop out.
