Six Guarani Indigenous Workers Rescued From Slave-Like Conditions in Brazil

Farm owner signs legal agreement to compensate victims and end labor exploitation as authorities continue their investigation On Wednesday, Brazil’s Labor Ministry said six Indigenous Guarani men were rescued a day earlier from conditions analogous to slavery at a rural property in Glorinha, in the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. One is an Argentine national, two are from the neighboring state of Santa Catarina and the remaining three are from Rio Grande do Sul. The Guarani workers were employed on a vegetable farm without contracts or labor protections and were housed in a wooden shack lacking habitable conditions and adequate sanitation facilities. The employer did not provide them with blankets to protect them from the cold or enough tools for all of the workers. In addition, two of those rescued spoke only Guarani and had difficulty understanding Portuguese. The TAC is a legal agreement in which an individual or company acknowledges wrongdoing and agrees to correct the problem and pay damages within a specified period, while the government regulatory agency agrees to monitor compliance with the terms and refrain from initiating legal action against the responsible party. The Labor Ministry scheduled a hearing for July to monitor compliance with the payments and continue the civil investigation into the case. Lloyds Bank Blocks Account of Leftwing News Outlet the Canary

Independent leftwing media outlet the Canary has said it is unable to pay its staff after Lloyds Bank blocked access to “a substantial amount” of its money and refused to say why. The outlet has accused Lloyds of “debanking” it, and suggested the move may be related to its anti-Zionist and pro-Palestine stance. “Whilst we do not currently know the reasons behind our debanking, we cannot afford to be naive about this,” it said in a statement on Tuesday. “We do know that multiple other politically engaged people have suffered similar actions by other banks in recent times.” The outlet has contacted the bank several times since losing access to its account, it said, but “Lloyds has not explained why it has taken this action. Despite multiple communications from us, the bank has not been forthcoming with its reasoning.” “The immediate effect has been that we have been unable to pay any staff or contractors,” the Canary’s CEO, Steve Topple, told Novara Media. “We have a large team, and all of them are now extremely distressed and in limbo. Many of them are marginalised people and it has hit them very hard. This Apple Lie at the grocery store

Palm oil is a butter substitute. Every baked product at the grocery store that used to be made with butter is now made with palm oil, because it is cheaper. Palm oil is made up of long highly-saturated fatty acids that cause it to be solid at room temperature, giving it physical properties very similar to butter, making it suitable as a substitute. However saturated fatty acids are bad for your health. Butter is also saturated fat and is also somewhat bad, but palm oil is much worse because the varieties of fatty acids it contains are much different from animal fat fatty acids and the human body metabolizes them differently, so they have a much higher impact. Similar physical properties but worse health properties! It is nearly impossible to find frozen baked goods that are still made with butter. This pie claims to be made with healthy ingredients, and specifically touts its butter content, but it conveniently omits mentioning palm oil entirely. Since palm oil appears first on the ingredients list before butter, that means there is more of it. Possibly almost the entire “butter-like” fraction of the pie consists of palm oil. This pie alone contains 400% daily value saturated fat, which is terrible for long-term health. I love apple pies and I was planning to eat this pie as my sole food over the course of 2 days for my One-Meal-A-Day (OMAD), but I’m not willing to risk eating palm oil. Outrageous! Communist Party of Slovakia punished for its 100th anniversary campaign

| | | — | | | | Billboard celebrating the KSS’s 100th anniversary in 2021 | A Slovak court has upheld penalties against the Communist Party of Slovakia (KSS) and members of its leadership over a campaign commemorating the party’s 100th anniversary, in a ruling that has sparked strong condemnation from communist parties abroad. The case dates back to 2021, when the KSS marked the centenary of its foundation with a nationwide campaign featuring commemorative posters bearing the hammer and sickle and the slogan “Without socialism, it will not work.” Slovak judicial authorities ruled that the campaign amounted to the promotion of a movement allegedly aimed at suppressing fundamental rights and freedoms. As a result, the party has been fined several thousand euros, while seven members of its Central Committee Presidium face substantial personal fines or prison sentences of up to one year. According to the KSS, the ruling effectively criminalizes the public celebration of the party’s own historical anniversary. British Army Wildcat Helicopters to Retire From Next Year

Hahaha, I didn’t notice that you were OP and had commented, saw that the article was about phasing out attack helicopters, and was about to comment with “supersquirrel is not going to be pleased”. It could be that they’re just trying to consolidate around a few models. The article does comment that they do have other attack helicopters remaining in service, including the AH-64. We in the US phased out the Kiowa a few years back, so I’m guessing that this is maybe kinda in line with the US’s approach. Shift off scout helicopters. The article: The Wildcat AH1 was introduced in 2014 and provides the British Army with a light transport and scout helicopter, which has already been tested alongside drones. The Kiowa WP article: In 2017, the U.S. Army withdrew its remaining OH-58s, using alternative rotorcraft such as the Boeing AH-64 Apache and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), to fill the role. EDIT: Not to mention killing the Commanche, also a scout: The Boeing–Sikorsky RAH-66 Comanche is an American stealth armed reconnaissance and attack helicopter designed for the United States Army. Following decades of study and development, the RAH-66 program was cancelled in 2004 before mass production began, by which point nearly US$7 billion had been spent on the program. On 23 February 2004, the U.S. Army announced the termination of the Comanche program, stating they had determined that the RAH-66 would require numerous upgrades to be viable on the battlefield and that the service would instead direct the bulk of its rotary systems funds to renovating its existing attack, utility, and reconnaissance helicopters. The Army also announced new plans to accelerate the development of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), which could also perform the scouting role intended for the Comanche, but with less risk. Since program cancellation, both of the prototypes have been placed on public display. Several billions of dollars were spent without delivering any new helicopters to service, due to this cycle of development and cancellation. During this time the armed scout role was filled primarily by the Vietnam-era OH-58, which was finally retired in the late 2010s, leaving the Army to use attack helicopters to fill in this role. I’d guess that they basically decided “if we’re sending something out on point to see if there’s something dangerous out there, better to use UAVs and make them attritable. If we’re sending humans in, it’s only if we know that there’s something there and are bringing real firepower”.

I never understand the thought process of giving a Linux newcomer some niche immutable Fedora derivative. Just go with ***&@$#_##-$&##*** desktop. Pretty popular blah blah. My point here is that your comment is a little judgmental, hostile, and isn’t very constructive. I agree with the underlying concern, but the delivery is what makes it come off mean and unproductive. For a first install, the key is picking a desktop and a setup that matches what they need day to day. Whether it’s a Ubuntu-based distro like Mint, Zorin or something else. The questions are more like: will their work VPN work, will Nvidia drivers be painless, and will Office workflows be tolerable. Just as long as it’s not ::: spoiler Ubuntu (Which introduces many issues do to it’s poorly implemented modifications to GnomeDE) :::, you really can’t go that wrong with any distribution, you just need to find the one that caters to you best. Everything has upsides and downsides. E.X. immutable options can be great, but in practice, immutable styles can add friction in a few ways: you have less freedom to tweak the system directly, certain troubleshooting steps look different, and you often hit extra steps for installing or updating drivers, VPN clients, or other system-adjacent software. If you need something mission critical for work, that matters, because the first Linux install is already the biggest learning curve and an immutable distro can increase that. There’s a reason why immutable Desktops aren’t Fedoras flagships and are treated as being special built. There’s lots to consider, so a “why use X just use Y” isn’t very helpful.

Reform UK’s deputy leader said last week that a parliamentary debate into Israeli influence on British politics was “antisemitic in its very motivation and at its core”. “As such, we should utterly reject it,” argued Richard Tice to a room full of MPs. What he did not tell them, however, was that he had been on a trip to “the Gaza front line” last September funded by the newly-created Reform Friends of Israel, where he concluded that the Gaza famine was a “blatant lie”. They also visited Israel’s police headquarters, which is overseen by far-right national security minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, who is sanctioned by the UK for “repeated incitement of violence against Palestinian civilians”. This trip was funded by the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, according to newly released Israeli government data seen by Declassified and found by Berlin-based journalist Yossi Bartel. The records show that the ministry paid Conexión Israel – a company based in Jerusalem that organises high-level country visits – more than £50,000 to facilitate the delegation. The great Circus of July arrive in town on Saturday, for 3 weeks. It starts in Catalunya, Spain and reaches France by the road. Strangely, while many days are spent in the area, Pyrenees as a mountain are almost avoided. There are only 2 rest days this year, so the first week is relatively long: 8 days. Again, there are no long stages this year: only 1 barely goes over 200 km. And the total course is probably the second shortest in history (just a few miles longer than last year’s edition…) Another heatwave is expected over France in July, starting at the same time as the race. It may not be as bad as the heatwave of June, but it is still going to be significantly hotter than normal for days if not weeks. PCS page Regulations You’ve got the usual Yellow, Green, Red Polka Dots, and White jerseys. Mountain and Points final classifications bring UCI points for the first 3 riders (only). On top of the Agressive rider daily and final prizes, there is now a smaller weekly and final ‘best teammate’ prize. Both are jury-based prizes. Each stage brings almost the same UCI points as a 1.Pro race (!) The scale for Green jersey points has been tweaked to favour even more the pure sprinters… There seems to be only 1 Intermediate Sprint per stage. Stage 2 169 km, D+ 2000 m A stage for punchers, again finishing in Barcelona’s Montjuic, pretty much like the final stage of the Tour of Catalunya even though the circuit is a little bit different Stage 3 196 km, D+ 3900 m Arrival in a ski resort in French Catalunya. Is this a mountain stage or a puncher stage? Or simply a very good day for breakaways?
