Does the Minecraft movie really look that bad? Only a 10-year-old can tell us

In A Minecraft Movie, a group of humans are sucked into the Overworld, the dimension where Minecraft is real. A nonplussed Momoa is fresh back from getting his highlights and bangs done at the hairdresser, having accidentally picked up the wrong pink coat. Danielle Brooks from Orange Is the New Black is there with some “kids” (including 22-year-old Emma Myers from Wednesday). Here they meet Steve, one of the default characters from Minecraft, who comes in a light blue T-shirt and jeans and played by Jack Black, who after last year’s performance as Bowser in the Super Mario movie is surely regarded by Warner Bros as something of a success talisman. “This guy is such a toolbag,” moans Myers. “Anything you can dream about, here you can make,” explains Black to our bewildered heroes, as cuboid pigs fly past and pink blocky sheep go “baa”. To get back home “they’ll have to master this world (and protect it from evil things such as piglins and zombies, too) while embarking on a magical quest.” Told you. The reactions to the trailer have gone from “horrifying”, “devastating” and “expensively naff” to “painful for the parents who are going to be dragged along to see it” and “worst thing to happen in cinema in 2024”. But, like many video game spin-off movies, it isn’t aimed at adult film critics. The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw, who knows his cinematic onions, was so critical in his two-star review of 2023’s The Super Mario Bros Movie (as was The Observer’s Wendy Ide in her one-star review) that Guardian games editor Keza MacDonald felt moved to defend it as a decent translation of the games, even if it’s not that good a movie. … So what does a real connoisseur think? “I think it looks pants,” says 10-year-old Arlo, whom I rudely interrupt playing some post-school Roblox on the iPad.

Meta found liable in child sexual exploitation case

We should be glad that tech comoanies are finally getting some warmth on the arse about this. Dear reader, I’m not sure if you follow Chris Hansen’s podcast, but he currently has a series in regards to the ongoing investigations into Roblox and their alleged and apparent housing + protection of pedophiles.

Groomblox devising new ways to exploit children.

When I was a kid, people would buy exploits that let you execute sex animations inside games. It was funny because I was a kid, but knowing that Roblox is now actively encouraging adults to date on a children’s game is combine that with the PMG reports about developer exploitation and CSA, it’s no wonder it’s valued so highly by fintech

The Roblox Predator Situation is Crazy

So there’s a Blender like CAD environment tied to a scripting language for those open source Minecraft clones that let you pick and place assets from a menu and then add code? Every Roblox install installs this development tool. It’s ridiculous to compare it to the java programming needed to make a Minecraft mod. And when you are done you hit “publish” and it uploads it to their servers ready for everyone to play.

Groomblox devising new ways to exploit children.

Well, you all can make fun of it all you want, but my wife’s boyfriend set up my Roblox account so I can play the 17+ games and he even bought me Robux so I could give my character a sword. Sounds to me like you’re all jealous.

Lmao Gen Alpha are either going to be the most capitalist generation or they're going to rebel against capitalism **hard**

Holy shit and I thought millennials and Gen X had it bad with how corporate our toys were. I hate to be that person that’s like “omg what kids like these days is poisoning them!” Especially because I come from the Mortal Kombat generation, but between Mr Beast, social media and shit like Roblox turning every hobby into a hussle I have to wonder what effect this will have on them. Capitalism preying on kids was bad enough when I was a kid in the 90s and 00s (and from what I’ve seen from 80s cartoons, the generation before mine was pretty bad too), but it’s a whole other level now. Collapse is hitting hard and is only going to get worse though, so it is possible they’ll go left.

Gaetz sent over $10K in Venmo payments to 2 women who testified in House probe, records suggest

He also wrote a check with a memo that said “tuition reimbursement.” Just pisspoor criminality. Even high school weed dealers know not to leave a paper trail and use cash. (Or maybe whatever anonymous cryptocurrency the dark web uses nowadays. I haven’t talked to a high school weed dealer since I was in high school many moons ago. You could tell me kids buy weed with Roblox Buxx and I’d believe you.)
