How common are MLMs in the economy?

i still visit reddit via redlib to read BestOfRedditorUpdates, and a story i read this morning stood out to me because of its casual mentioning that a “protagonist” of the story works at an MLM and accepts this as normal. Meanwhile I have always heard that MLMs are dangerous, 100% of the time, and can get cult-like, can underpay you (or not really pay you at all). Reading the post and thinking about them just accepting MLMs unsettled me because it reminded me that there are a few where i live, that i’ve seen some in job applications, and i started to wonder if the place where i work currently could be a sort of MLM. After all, plenty of workplaces in this economic system exhibit qualities in-line with MLM structure. But my ultimate question is just this: How prevalent are MLMs? Are they just an accepted part of local economies? Do city councils work with them/allow them to exist despite the inherent shadiness?

How do I recover data from a BTRFS Fedora partition if live images do not "see" the disk?

I cannot get further than GRUB except to rescue mode, when I attempt to boot the main Fedora OS it gets stuck on searching for a disk indefinitely. Gets stuck on Job dev-disk-by\.device/start running (1h / no limit) in the console. I have a Windows partition on same drive, it also doesn’t boot, it’s rescue command prompt (from where you are instructed to open notepad to rescue files) doesn’t “see” any disk but C: and X: (emerg boot). I tried booting this machine with two live OS USBs: Fedora and SystemRescue. Neither of them list the SSD (or anything but the USB drive FS itself) in lsblk or the file manager. Due to lack of storage mediums, I haven’t done a backup in a while. How can I rescue the files? Many passwords are also stuck there, in Firefox manager I wasn’t able to sync due to losing access to the 2FA email.

i don’t even really conceptualize myself as a computer person. i just tinker. i like to fix things rather than replace them. i like to understand how things work and tweak them to suit my needs/wants. i love to show people what i’ve learned, but far too many people (including my family) couldn’t give half a fuck. just buy new and by the time its all set up with pretty colors, you’ll forget what you were even getting frustrated about with the old one you returned. The good thing is if it’s not too hard to repair, you can get a lot of free shit from the “trash” that you’ve graciously offer to dispose for them.

I mean, I guess it’s better than all of Steam being blocked like it has been in the past. Not really their fault. Gaming is really frowned on my the Chinese government in general since it’s harder to control the subject matter than with videos that can just be scanned for key words and blocked or edited. But sucks that they even have an LGBTQ+ classification at all. Even if it may have originally been to help LGBTQ+ people find inclusive media, it’s obvious that those kinds of things are always used for censorship more than inclusivity. The flags should instead be on the anti-LGBTQ+ content, not regular, inclusive of real society content.

Differentiation drives the erosion of positivity on social media

Most people believe that social media discourse is negative and divisive. Here we show how this negativity can evolve even when users are not motivated to be negative. We propose that social media users seek to differentiate themselves from other users, and it is easier to differentiate oneself through negativity than positivity because negative information is more heterogeneous and counternormative than positive information. This makes users increasingly likely to post negative comments as a conversation unfolds and it becomes more challenging to make unique contributions. Analyzing 2.05 billion comments from 2,150 Reddit communities shows that comments become more negative over time, both within threads and community histories. This trend toward negativity is mediated by the semantic uniqueness of comments, suggesting that it arises from users differentiating themselves. This trend is strongest when initial dialogue is positive, making negative comments highly counternormative. We replicate these patterns in an experiment simulating social media dialogue (n = 3,685). Participants become more negative over time, but only when incentivized to be unique, and especially when dialogue begins positively. These findings suggest that the structure of social media platforms interacts with human motivation to foster a drift toward negativity over time in online discourse.

How do you get out of your own head?

Great write up. That’s how I cope, as well. I didn’t even realize I had the highs and lows going until this year. I just found that aiming for small incremental improvements to situations that sabotaged me was the only way for me to get by. Edit: This year, someone pointed out to me that certain personality types seem prone to burts of high activity and slumps of low energy - and that I matched most of those traits. I’ve been coping through my low energy times with various habits and routines, while I write a to-do list to remove obstacles, which I systemicly work through. Of course, during high energy times, I get much more done against that list.

I just found out even on PS5s with disc drive there are a lot of single player games that don’t need an initial patch or verification and are playable without being online. But Sony no longer makes this a requirement for publishers as it was with PS4, so more and more games need this. I have a PS5 without disc drive, so that’s not an option for me…
