Yea, this is important to point out, though it doesn’t make any of this better by any amount at all. Roblox is essentially a game engine with a server browser and social media strapped on to it, it’s not really a game in the normal sense. People can upload assets and write their own scripts to basically create whatever they want, it’s not like Roblox themselves sat down and made any of this. The combination of a platform mainly played by children with social media built-in and the ability for people to upload whatever custom content they want with seemingly no moderation was bound to lead to horrors beyond my comprehension. Edited: I’m surprised they didn’t mention the hyper monetization that appeals to children heavily, like, this shit is worse than any mobile game you could think of. It’s honestly fucking wild. You load into any game on the front page and you’re hit with like 5 pop ups asking you to buy something and buttons all over your screen with countdowns for “exclusive deals” in their shop.
s&box is not a Garry’s Mod sequel, it’s a Roblox wannabe full of FOMO paid cosmetics and that runs like shit.
85% of the point of a date is a nice (not necessarily expensive) meal and some kind of entertainment that allows you to chat about it. Roblox satisfies none of these.
If you tie yourself to a commercial platform, it’s gonna take advantage of you. That’s how they make money. So, I would also recommend using an open-source game engine like Godot and then distributing on multiple platforms. The closest open-source thing to the Roblox model, that I can think of, is Luanti, which is basically a game engine and distribution platform for Minecraft-like games. Don’t expect to make money off of it, though.

Meta has added an important puzzle piece to Horizon Worlds, as the company has quietly rolled out its premium digital currency on the social VR platform in the US, UK, and Canada. Roblox has Robux, Rec Room has Tokens, and Horizon Worlds now has Meta Credits, letting users buy in-world digital goods from creators, such as avatar outfits and access keys to premium worlds. Unlike Quest Cash, Meta Credits can’t be used to buy hardware or accessories, just stuff in Horizon Worlds. While it’s a big step, this isn’t the official start of the Horizon Worlds economy. Meta has been experimenting with monetization on Horizon Worlds since 2022, allowing users to buy digital goods directly with their local currency. The difference with Meta Credits (like all premium tokens) however is the all-too familiar obfuscation of the amount of real-world money being spent.

Wait until you find out about the child labour stuff. There may not be sweatshops in the developed world, but you can bet your ass a lot of roblox “dev studios” are really just one or two adults, exploiting a bunch of kids for free labour via discord. Oh, and then there’s the fully integrated speculative market for assets and cosmetics, where ten-year-olds gain and lose thousands of real dollars in robux. The ecosystem around Roblox is a complete shitshow that no sane parent should allow a kid anywhere near.
You basically make simplified games within the game engine/framework of roblox, then you can monetize it, so this described nonsense is confined to the roblox “place” “Welcome to Bloxburg”, some kind of life sim shit.
