Viral footage of a Palestinian boy crying over his broken glasses has drawn attention to the impact of Israel’s genocidal blockade on Gaza. Seven-year-old Ayoub Junaid has a severe visual impairment, with eye doctors warning his parents that any falls or blows could cause additional damage to his retinas. He is in need of urgent surgery. “At the end of April, while walking with a family member along a road strewn with rubble, he fell and struck his face on the ground, breaking the glasses,” his mother Eman Junaid said. “He burst into tears, rolled on the ground and desperately tried to piece them back together. For Ayoub, those glasses were everything. Even with them, he cannot see clearly and often has to hold objects just inches from his face. But without them, he can barely move around at all.” Ayoub has since been given a new pair of glasses, but his case underlines the number of Gazan residents prevented from accessing basic eye care such as eye exams, corrective lenses and ophthalmic surgery by Israel’s blockade. Health officials in Gaza say eye care services have been decimated by the genocide, with Israeli missiles forcing the temporary shuttering of Gaza City’s Government Eye Hospital, the only public eye care centre in the territory. The important thing to remember is that the closest anyone here seems to be to Venezuelan left organizations is that they have read a couple articles from one or two geocities-esque pages. Maybe some claims to “know someone”. This site is just showing its limited bonafides despite how deeply held a relevant position is. I will stress that if this is a topic that you, the cool and good reader that is reading this, care about a lot, you should join an organization and ensure that you build lively ties with Venezuelan organizations.

Havana (AFP) – Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel on Friday announced greater freedoms for small businesses across the country, as the communist government takes steps to liberalize the island’s economy in the face of a crippling US blockade. In a speech broadcast on national television, Diaz-Canel said Cuba would open more sectors to private businesses and streamline the approval process for new ventures. “For non-state forms of management, the list of prohibited activities will be limited so that their scope of operations is as broad as possible,” the president said. “A process is underway… to approve all pending applications in the shortest time possible.” Under pressure from the oil blockade imposed by Washington in January, the Cuban government has unveiled a series of reforms aimed at opening up the economy. Private businesses — which can employ up to 100 people — were authorized in 2021 and have become an increasingly important part of Cuba’s economy. Since February, they have been permitted to import fuel, a sector previously controlled exclusively by the state. As part of the new measures, the government will enable private businesses to invest in the economy on equal terms with foreign investors, after some of them recently left the country amid concerns over US sanctions. Diaz-Canel said the government was also considering scrapping state intermediaries in import and export operations. The president reiterated his commitment to decentralizing the economy and granting greater autonomy to state-owned enterprises, which account for roughly 80 percent of economic activity. He also announced an overhaul of the state bureaucracy that would reduce the number of ministries and trim the the state workforce, a plan that requires parliamentary approval in July. Diaz-Canel assured that the new reforms “will soon be discussed and approved very swiftly.” He also sought to project confidence despite the country’s mounting economic difficulties. “The country is not paralyzed; the country is facing this situation intelligently,” the president said, denouncing what he described as a “maximum pressure” policy from Washington. In addition to the oil blockade, the United States has imposed a range of sanctions on Cuba. The measures have further aggravated the economic, social and energy crises that have gripped the island for years despite its decades-long struggle against a US embargo dating back to 1962.
Geneva (AFP) – The first-ever international agreement on safeguarding digital platform workers in the gig economy was adopted on Friday at the UN’s International Labour Organization. The Decent Work in the Platform Economy Convention is aimed at extending labour protections to hundreds of millions of people worldwide who work through digital platforms, in areas like food delivery and car services. The convention applies to “all digital labour platforms” and “all digital platform workers… whether they are in the formal or informal economy”, according to the text adopted by ILO members. Until now, labour practices have struggled to keep pace with the dramatic shifts in the way people work. The World Bank estimated in 2023 there were up to 435 million online gig workers around the globe who had largely fallen outside regular labour protections. Companies behind the apps control the gig work via algorithms that assign tasks, set pay, evaluate performance and even fire workers. Despite largely controlling the tasks and pay, the platforms typically classify the workers as independent contractors rather than employees. This allows them in many cases to ignore things like minimum wage requirements, workplace safety and access to social security. “The ILO now has the first convention that focuses on the impact of digitalisation in the world of work,” said the UN labour agency’s chief Gilbert Houngbo. …
We recently reported that Xbox seems to be having some troubles, with significant layoffs and a 100-day plan on the cards to bring the ship around. Some of Microsoft’s issues include plummeting revenue, an affordability crisis, and low adoption rates. According to Xbox Gaming’s Chief Stragety Officer, Matthew Ball, ad-supported tiers may be one potential tool to help improve things at Xbox. In an interview with The Game Business, Ball addresses the rising costs of gaming, saying that “the costs have gone up way too high on development, and at the same point, everyone feels terrible with prices going up on hardware or software or microtransactions. That is a challenge. It’s not good if that is the only option.” He goes on to compare it to streaming, noting that the vast majority of new streaming subscriptions in recent years have been on supported subscription tiers. The comparison to ad-supported streaming services suggests Ball is mostly talking about services like Xbox Game Pass, where there have been rumors of ad-supported tiers, or potentially even steeper subsidies for console hardware—an area Xbox is leaning into more and more since Asha Sharma took over as CEO in early 2026.

Iranian sources claim a sophisticated intelligence operation tracked US P-8 aircraft and F-35 jets across multiple bases in the Gulf and Jordan. Iran has executed a sophisticated intelligence and operational plan in the strikes launched against several US military bases in the region early Thursday morning, Fars reported, citing a senior Iranian military source. The source, speaking to Fars News Agency, stated that the strikes inflicted significant losses on expensive equipment belonging to US forces in the region. In a detailed account of the operation, the source reported that Iranian forces tracked the flight path and positioning of two large US P-8 aircraft from the moment they took off. One of the aircraft was reportedly arriving from the Diego Garcia airbase in the central Indian Ocean, while the other was flying from a US base in Western Europe, heading toward the southern Gulf. According to the source, the precise locations of these two aircraft, at the Shaikh Isa Air Base in Bahrain and the Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait, were subsequently struck by Iranian precision weapons. Furthermore, Iran monitored the positioning of at least three US F-35 fighter jets inside a hangar at the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan. The source asserted that the surveillance continued until the final moments before missile launches, at which point the exact location of the hangar was targeted with long-range, solid-fuel missiles. Iran retaliates to US aggression, hits US basesEarlier on Thursday, Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) announced it launched retaliatory strikes against US military positions in Jordan, Kuwait, and Bahrain, in a “punitive action against the aggressor” operation in response to renewed US aggression against Tehran. According to Tasnim News Agency, the IRGC fired 12 ballistic missiles at Jordan’s Al-Azraq Air Base and its control center, destroying what it claimed were “these facilities and a large number of fighter aircraft,” including US F-35, F-15, and F-16 jets reportedly stationed at the base. In a separate statement cited by IRNA, the IRGC said it carried out two waves of operations, striking “18 important targets belonging to the US Army” at bases in Kuwait and Bahrain. The Guard specifically identified Kuwait’s Ali Al Salem and Ahmad Al-Jaber air bases and Bahrain’s Sheikh Isa Air Base. Earlier, Iranian media reports had also indicated that the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain came under attack. Strait of Hormuz shut downIn further retaliatory actions, the IRGC’s Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters issued a statement declaring the immediate closure of the Strait of Hormuz. “From this moment, due to insecurity in the region, the Strait of Hormuz is declared closed to the passage of any type of vessel, including oil tankers and commercial ships, and any passage will be struck,” the statement said. The announcement cited “the continued mischief of criminal America” and “the beginning of attacks by that country’s aggressive army on some areas in the south of Hormozgan province.” The IRGC also denied US claims that ships were still passing through the strait, stating, “The US claim of a ship crossing the said strait is denied.” US launches aggression on IranEarlier on June 11, Iranian air defenses were activated in several areas early Wednesday after reports emerged of explosions in southern Iran and neighboring Iraq, according to Iranian state media. Air defense systems were triggered west of the capital, Tehran, while explosions were heard in the cities of Sirik and Minab, both located in the Hormozgan province. Iranian state television later reported that air defenses had also been activated in Asaluyeh, a major energy hub in southern Iran. The broadcaster added that five hostile projectiles had targeted a location in Minab. Further explosions were reported in Bandar Abbas, including in the vicinity of the city’s airport and an Air Force base, according to the official IRNA news agency. The activation of air defense systems came shortly after Iranian authorities announced heightened readiness in western Tehran and several southern regions, including strategic energy sites, as regional military tensions continue to rise. Meanwhile, Tasnim News Agency denied earlier claims of explosions on Qeshm Island and other nearby islands. The agency suggested that some of the reported sounds were linked to broader clashes in the Gulf rather than direct strikes on the islands themselves. Incarcerated activist Malik Muhammad’s standing client call in March with their lawyer had been canceled without any real explanation. When Muhammad’s attorney, Lauren Regan, went to check their status on the Oregon Inmate Tracker, she found nothing. They seemed to have vanished without a trace. Friends and family feared the worst. Muhammad, an army veteran and activist serving the longest federal sentence of any 2020 Black Lives Matter protester, had been a target inside the state prison because of their outspoken political beliefs and organizing efforts while incarcerated, several of their friends and supporters told The Intercept. “We were calling everyone,” said Christopher Kuttruff, a close friend and supporter. “We were terrified that they were in the hospital or dead …your mind obviously goes to the worst places.” For weeks, the activist disappeared from all tracking systems. The best Muhammad’s supporters could ascertain by early April was that they had been transferred to a “confidential location.” Late that month, Muhammad was able to get a letter out to their partner from Kirkland Correctional Institute, in South Carolina, an intake facility 3,000 thousand miles from Oregon — or, as Regan puts it, “as far away from me as possible.”
First it says In normal times, Cushing stores around 40 million barrels of oil with capacity of up to 75 million. But then… When Cushing’s reserves get below 20 million, they effectively hit empty, scraping the bottom of the barrel of what is largely unusable sludge. From what I find, there is a way to reprocess the sludge, such as distillation and pyrolysis. https://www.doinggroup.com/index.php?u=show-2174.html Floytweg claims it can recover up to 90% The Flottweg Tricanter® system offers a comprehensive solution for oil sludge treatment, recovering approximately 90% of the oil from sludge in ponds, lagoons, or from crude oil tank cleaning. This not only recycles the oil as a valuable product but also significantly reduces the volume of solids to be disposed of, cutting down on transport, landfill, and incineration costs. https://www.flottweg.com/applications/industrial-waste-mineral-oils/oil-sludge/ While I acknowledge there is a cost, the tanks could be cleaned and most of the oil recovered.

Anyways, in other news, due to a supremely nightmarish interaction with police, i am now out to the entire state of oregon! So sorry to hear this part, sister! But I also have to ask: how safe or unsafe is Oregon for trans women in general? I live in CA, but I am fascinated with OR, both its beauty and certain specialties that are available only there. Maps by Erin In The Morning show OR as being among the safest states, just like CA - but from your (apparently) horrible experience, I now have to wonder if maybe that assessment is inaccurate? I am a professional telecom engineer, and I am a co-founder of a non-profit organization that seeks to build a new non-profit cellular phone network based on retro 2G technology - see the Retro Mobile Phones community I recently started in the Fediverse. Oregon is at the top of the list of locations we are after, because it has significant spectrum vacancies (portions of GSM-compatible radio spectrum that aren’t already claimed and taken by some big company) and it appears to be a safe and friendly state, as opposed to Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas etc - other states in which similar spectrum vacancies exist. But in light of your posted experience I am now worried - hence I would like some further clarification. My partner and I did travel to Oregon last November for exploration: we arrived in Eugene by Amtrak train (I avoid flying as much as possible), then rented a car and drove out east to explore some of those spectrum vacancy areas. We didn’t have any negative interactions, and we absolutely loved McKenzie river - but perhaps we were just lucky?

Of all the reddit replacements, Lemmy has the most staying power because of its federated nature. It’s not dependent on a single source of administration or funding. Voat, for example, went to shit because it ended up full of Nazis that got ran off of reddit and then they ran out of money. While this same fate could potentially befall any individual Lemmy instance, the platform as a whole can react and continue.

I’ll ignore your self-victimization about your own ignorance and just go after the voting thing. Again, women’s suffrage is the example that shows you’re wrong. They literally couldn’t vote and still got what they needed because of what you call “activism”. Except it was specifically radical activism. They spent decades lobbying politicians and letter writing and protesting acceptably and it go them nowhere. They broke the law, they ended up prison, they went on hunger strikes, they surrounded the white house. They got the ballot. Not by voting. By fighting. So when we look at the civil rights movement, we see that Nixon was ALSO forced to concede policy positions and abandon his conservative positions. So clearly it’s not the case that voting in Ds is the only way. Meanwhile, FDR the democrat refused any structural civil rights concessions and refused to entertain a federal anti-lynching bill and JFK the Democrat also avoided making any major concessions arguing that it would harm the Democrats in the South. So as we see, the party in charge doesn’t fucking matter, what matters is how forcefully you can make your case. This is known as “interest convergence”. Until you can make meeting your demands less risky than ignoring your demands, nothing will happen. Republican and Democrat alike work this way. You have to force them.
