While fighting a brutal guerrilla war against the Turkish government, it has also managed to inspire Kurdish movements in Syria, Iraq and Iran, as well as Iran’s non-Kurdish protesters. In a region where many parties are nakedly sectarian, the PKK has gone from Marxist-Leninist nationalism to a form of radical-democratic “libertarian municipalism” inspired by the late anarchist thinker Murray Bookchin. For better or worse, the PKK exists today only because the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP), a now-obscure Palestinian force, agreed to shelter some Kurdish exiles in the 1980s. That experience in the Palestinian camps permanently affected the worldview of the PKK’s founding generation. Not only did the PKK learn how to fight a guerrilla war, it also walked away with a strong sense of internationalism. In fact, some of the PKK’s founding figures spent time in an Israeli detention camp as prisoners of war. Old issues of the party magazine Serxwebun tell the remarkable story of the “Beaufort Castle Heroes,” a group of Kurds who had been training at a Palestinian base in Lebanon when they were captured by Israeli forces in June 1982. It is up to the communist movement in the U.S. to eliminate imperialism in their country, just as it is up to the communist movement in Italy to eliminate the Vatican, but the elimination of both concerns the entire world communist movement. Our main commitment lies in advancing the socialist revolution in Italy, but at the same time we are paying increasing attention to the communist movement in the U.S., of which you are a part. The commitment, in this case, is to forge ties in three areas. One area is the development of mutual understanding and joint action. The retreat of the communist movement has led to a weakening of relations among the various organizations that compose it at the international level, to the extent that communists in one country know very little about the conscious and organized communist movement in other parts of the world, and joint action remains at an embryonic stage or is confined to one or another of the international coordinating bodies that do not communicate with one another. Overcoming this limitation is an aspect of the ongoing rebirth of the communist movement. A second area is mutual solidarity against repression. The imperialist bourgeoisie, in this terminal phase of the economic, political, social, and cultural crisis, is displaying all its ferocity, and repression is a weapon it resorts to with increasing frequency and intensity. The CARC Party is a component of the Caravan of the (New) Italian Communist Party, the collective of organizations and individuals following the (New) Italian Communist Party toward the goal of making Italy a new socialist country, and this Caravan has always faced repression, since its founding more than forty years ago—the same period when the FRSO was founded. It faces it today as well, with the repressive action against the CARC Party on April 21, searches, seizures of materials based on a charge that is the same one with which the fascist regime imprisoned Antonio Gramsci and led him to his death, and with fines of thousands of euros for demonstrations against fascists and Zionists. We would like to thank FRSO here, which was among the first communist organizations—among many—to express their solidarity with us at the international and national levels. Mutual cooperation in confronting repression is open. A third arena is frank and open debate. The course of the revolutionary process in the U.S. differs from that in Italy in many specific ways, but the two processes also share universal, common aspects regarding which debate is essential. Above all, we share the fact that FRSO and P.CARC operate in imperialist countries—countries where the socialist revolution has not yet triumphed, where the ground is therefore new and unexplored. For this reason, exchange is essential—sharing what we discover, discussing the assessment of the communist movement, the analysis of the ongoing crisis, the regimes the bourgeoisie adopts in imperialist countries, and the strategy for seizing power. Therefore, we have begun studying your theoretical works, and we will present you with a summary of ours. Among the various themes, the first is that of party building. Since replacing Britain as the world’s largest imperialist state and power, the most powerful reactionary class in the United States has been responsible for the crisis and suffering of billions of oppressed and exploited people in various countries maintained as its colonies and semi-colonies. The people of the United States face one of the most difficult periods in the history of their class struggle. The drastic decline of U.S. dominance in industry, agriculture, and foreign trade has given rise to various forms of oppression against the working class within the United States as well as against the peoples of colonies and semi-colonies, and even weaker capitalist nations. Competition among financial oligarchies has become far more intense and fierce. The move by many nations to restrict the use of the Dollar to avoid the burden of the crisis has accelerated this decline. The struggle for energy and natural resources is becoming increasingly difficult for the United States to win through conventional politics. The economic decline has had a significant impact on the decline of the liberal democratic system that has long been revered and promoted throughout the country. Currently, in the eyes of people from various nations, the United States is nearly on par with non-industrialized nations in terms of protecting the basic rights of its people. President Donald J. Trump’s use of police actions backed by the military to enforce federal government policies and programs—including immigration policies and anti-LGBT policies—has drawn opposition not only from the oppressed and exploited people of America but from the entire world. Although fascism is recognized as the most reactionary offspring of the capitalist system, people in many countries are still shocked to witness the blatant suppression of freedom of speech on college campuses during the campaign against Israeli Zionist aggression against Gaza-Palestine. Also, whether they believe it or not, they witness the brutality of the Federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in every operation. Alongside the intensive anti-war campaign by the FRSO and other revolutionary movements, it is clear that the war of aggression against Venezuela, the war of aggression against Iran, the unlimited support for Zionist Israel in the war of aggression in Gaza-Palestine, the interventionist war in Nigeria and several African nations, and the U.S.-NATO proxy war through Ukraine against Russia are merely a reflection of America’s frustration in maintaining its dominance. Even the re-election of Donald J. Trump as President of the United States is proof in itself that the crisis is extremely acute and requires a war-mongering president to resolve it! The 10th FRSO Congress holds special subjective significance amidst highly favorable objective national and international conditions for the growth and development of the revolutionary movement in both imperialist and semi-colonial countries. The subjective state of the FRSO is shaped by the objective reality of oppression and exploitation by the 1% reactionary class in the United States, in Latin America, and throughout the world. In addition to its intense class struggle in the United States, the FRSO has demonstrated proletarian international solidarity with national and class struggles in various semi-colonial and weaker capitalist countries, grounded in the powerful teachings of Marxism-Leninism. The FRSO takes Karl Marx’s thesis as its guiding principle: that “a country cannot be free while simultaneously oppressing another country,” and that “Labor in white skin cannot emancipate itself where the black skin is branded.” The American people, just like the people in other countries, have long demanded the birth of a Proletarian Party that is truly conscious of its historical role in leading the class struggle through violence. Especially in a crisis situation like the present. The Front also highly values the great efforts undertaken by the Freedom Road Socialist Organization — FRSO — in solidarity with Palestine, its cause, and the struggle of its people for their legitimate rights to self-determination, the liberation of their land, and the establishment of their democratic state over the entirety of their national soil, as well as its clear role in the demonstrations rejecting the U.S. imperialist war against Iran and the countries of the region. The Front commends the fraternal, internationalist, and revolutionary positions of the Freedom Road Socialist Organization, and its courageous struggle in confronting the fascist policies targeting immigrants in the United States, considering that confronting this fascist tendency within the U.S. is part of the global confrontation with imperialist fascist policies. The Front stresses, in particular, its deep appreciation and high regard for your organization’s clear awareness of the right of the Palestinian people and their fighting forces to determine their own forms of struggle, formulate their positions and methods of action, within the framework of their continuous struggle for their right to liberate their land and determine their destiny. The Front also affirms that it considers trade-union struggle against capitalism and for workers’ rights, and support for the liberation movements of African comrades, to be part of a shared global struggle for freedom and justice, and for ending policies of aggression and expansionist wars. It considers that the duty of all progressive forces today is to wage a struggle united in its objectives across the world against imperialism and its brutal policies. The Front considers that the expansion of the membership and capacities of any progressive organization is among the principal organizational tasks, with major and effective impact on the militant work of the entire leftist and progressive camp. As the Front addresses your esteemed Congress, and the struggling comrades and guests participating in it, it recalls that the brutal genocidal war is still being waged by the Zionist occupation against the people of Palestine, with full support from the imperialist system, foremost among them the government of the United States of America. This requires the escalation of united militant action to stop the genocide, expose and isolate the occupation, and prosecute its leaders for their crimes. The Front also clarifies to all comrades and progressive forces that the genocidal war to which the people of Palestine are being subjected represents a model that the occupation and the imperialist system seek to export and generalize globally, wherein technology allies itself with capital against human existence and the values it carries and represents. It comes at no better a critical time, as contradictions within the United States and around the world are intensifying at an unprecedented rate. Everywhere around us, the assault of imperialist US continues to squeeze people dry and exploit people to death. In the United States, imperialism’s assault on the working class has deepened hunger, poverty, and misery among the masses. Capitalists have increasingly made contractual work the norm, stripping workers of regular jobs and benefits, and making conditions harder for collective organizing and action. Trump has continued cracking down on trade unions on the one hand, while on the other co-opting union leadership into a labor aristocracy subservient to the bourgeoisie interests, especially through the illusion of his “America First” policy that promises to bring back industry and jobs to the country. Meanwhile, the Trump administration has slashed budgets for basic social services, especially healthcare, while providing no relief for people beset with the high inflation crisis spurred by his own tariff policies and the imperialist war on Iran. Under particular threat is the huge reserve army of migrant labor that U.S. imperialism has consciously amassed. ICE, corporate-run detention centers, big tech companies, and others agents have formed an unholy partnership that simultaneously tears families apart, scapegoats migrants for the problems created by the capitalist class, and extracts super profits from their suffering. Meanwhile, violent state repression toward African Americans, Chicanos, and other oppressed nationalities continues unabated, as does the state’s desperate attempt to dampen the flames of the pro-Palestine solidarity movement. This domestic turmoil is unfolding in the context of heightened U.S. military aggression and intensifying increasingly aggressive U.S. imperialist intervention abroad, including in Venezuela, Cuba, Iran, Palestine, and the Philippines. But rather than signaling that the U.S. imperialists may appear to be strong and powerful, in fact, these are all signs of its desperate attempt to maintain power and global hegemony amid strategic decline. The military aggression against Venezuela and Iran and threats against other sovereign nations, show signs of the imperialist beast backed into a corner, clawing and claiming larger territories lashing out in order to survive. The work FRSO has done to unmask and fight back against this beast—especially in the midst of extreme economic and political crisis—serves as an inspiration to us all. We have witnessed your determination in building a militant labor movement driven by mass struggles on the shop floor. We have learned from how you stand up to political repression—whether from the police, FBI, or ICE—and inspire the masses to stand with you and organize for their collective rights. We have stood alongside each other in re-enlivening an anti-war movement with a clear position on opposing imperialist wars while supporting people’s wars for national liberation in their own countries. Your bravery in the face of the capitalists — whether in the workplace, in the halls of government, or in the dens of the war hawks — has won you concrete gains and victories for working and oppressed people around the country. We are overjoyed to hear that FRSO has experienced extraordinary growth in the course of these struggles, recognizing the crucial task you are carrying out in equipping these broad movements with the weapon of Marxism-Leninism to strike at the heart of the enemy. At the same time, we are humbled and deeply appreciative of your dedication to proletarian internationalism, as demonstrated by your unrelenting solidarity with national liberation movements, including the People’s Democratic Revolution being waged in the Philippines under the leadership of the CPP. Your support is needed more now than ever. As a semi-colonial and semi-feudal country dominated by the joint class dictatorship of the big comprador bourgeoisie, and big landlord class and bureaucrat capitalists—all under the direction of U.S. imperialism—the Filipino people feel acutely the worsening contradictions of the current order. The deadly hunger already experienced by the toiling masses has been exacerbated by the sharp economic crash deterioration following the U.S.’ war on Iran, coupled with the refusal of the reactionary Philippine state to heed the people’s demands to repeal burdensome taxes and other anti-people and anti-poor policies and measures, that would mean lowering their profit margin or angering their U.S. corporate patrons. The self-serving nature of those in power was thoroughly unmasked in massive corruption scandals made public last year, as well as in the current political circus between the Marcos and Duterte dynasties playing out ahead of the 2028 Philippine presidential elections. Beyond acting in their own interests, however, the reactionary classes of Philippine society are wholly subservient to their imperialist masters. With dizzying speed, the entire country is being made into the U.S.’ forward base in its campaign to encircle and contain China and assert dominance in the Asia-Pacific region. More de facto and secret U.S. military bases are being built across the country, which house both U.S. weapons and troops under the guise of “rotational” presence. Just this month, the U.S. military “assisted” by Philippine militaries — the Armed Forces of the Philippines — fired a Tomahawk missile from a civilian airport into a civilian community more than 600 kilometers away, endangering the lives of hundreds of thousands of Filipinos who were in the path of the low-flying missile, in a clear act of war provocation against China. The firing was part of the Balikatan war games—just one of over 500 joint military exercises set to happen this year that all aim to project power and heighten tensions with China. Even the Philippine economy is being transformed to serve the U.S.’ war economy, with the push to establish a US-controlled “economic security zone,” along with plans of building an ammunition factory, refueling hub for warships, and other infrastructure already under way. The biggest obstacle to the complete transformation of the Philippines into a launching pad for U.S. imperialist war is the Filipino people’s democratic revolution being waged through protracted people’s war. For 57 years, the Communist Party of the Philippines has led this struggle for national and social liberation, and has spread the fire of revolution across the archipelago. It has thwarted every attempt of every reactionary U.S.-backed regime to destroy it, making a fool of presidents and generals who promise every year to end it by some arbitrary deadline. Still, the state’s fascist terror unleashed against revolutionary forces and the broad masses of people struggling for change is very much a reality, especially in the Philippine countryside. Last month, the Filipino people suffered a loss that continues to weigh heavily on us all. On April 19, the butchers of the Philippine military committed a massacre—a war crime—by indiscriminately firing upon communities in Toboso, Negros Occidental. Nineteen people were martyred that day: ten Red fighters of the New People’s Army and nine civilians, including people local to the area as well as a student leader, journalists, peasant organizers, and community researchers who went to Negros to learn from among the peasant masses. Among them were Lyle Prijoles and Kai Sorem, two Filipino-American activists who were leaders in the Filipino community in the US, leaders who chose to sacrifice their comforts living in the U.S. to serve the toiling masses back home. The enemy would like to portray this massacre as a strategic victory against communism. It is the opposite. In a statement following the Toboso massacre, the New People’s Army-Northern Negros under the Roselyn Jean Pelle Command reminds us that the very reason the U.S.-Marcos regime targeted and continues to target Negros is because of the strength of the revolution there. They state that in 2025 alone, “Party membership grew 30 percent” and “new branches were formed in broad areas.” Further, “membership in secret mass organizations grew nearly 50 percent, while the number of individuals reached by the revolution tripled. The NPA in Northern Negros also doubled the range of its area of operations and launched at least 19 guerrilla offensive and counter-offensive actions. It conducted these operations up to towns near the provincial capital and populated areas.” What is happening in Negros shows us that the U.S.-Marcos regime is fighting a losing battle, because, as our founding chairperson Jose Maria Sison declared in his last statement before passing, “the Filipino people’s democratic revolution is invincible.” As long as the toiling masses’ aspirations for land, for sovereignty, and for a future crafted by our own hands continue to exist, so will the people’s revolution. The martyrdom of the Negros 19 has only fueled and fanned the flames of struggle across the country, and among the Filipino diaspora and our allies overseas. In their wake, thousands more will raise high the red flag of people’s war. Comrades, the enemy is frightened because of the success of our people’s movements the world over, from the U.S., to Palestine, to Iran, to the Philippines. Each victory in one of our countries represents a victory for all. And with our weapon of proletarian internationalism wielded by the broad anti-imperialist united front, we know that no tactical setback can prevent the inevitability of peoples’ victories against the yoke of imperialism, fascism, and all reaction. A blueprint for effective activism 10 years after defeating a dam in Borneo (analysis)

In October 2015, Indigenous activists from Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Cambodia, Brazil, the United States, and Honduras, together with delegates from longhouse communities throughout the Malaysian state of Sarawak, gathered at Tanjung Tepalit, an Indigenous Kenyah village on the Baram River on the island of Borneo. They called the gathering WISER: the World Indigenous Summit on Environment and Rivers. Tanjung Tepalit hosted the gathering because the village, along with more than two dozen others along the river, was scheduled to be drowned. The Baram Dam, a 1,200-megawatt hydroelectric mega project backed by the Sarawak state government and aligned with a regional industrial development scheme called the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE), would have flooded an area of more than 400 square kilometers (more than 150 square miles) and displaced an estimated 20,000 Kenyah, Kayan, and Penan people. Muslims, Catholics, Evangelicals, Buddhists, agnostics, and people who followed traditional Indigenous religions were among the attendees. As we gathered, Peter Kallang, the Kenyah founder and chair of the local advocacy group SAVE Rivers, addressed the assembly: “We are people of many faiths,” he said, “but we are united in one mission. INDONESIA: A military court sentenced four service members today for their roles in an acid attack on a prominent human rights activist. The group were sentenced to up to three years in prison. The three navy marines, Sergeant Edi Sudarko, First Lieutenant Budhi Hariyanto Widhi Cahyono and Captain Nandala Dwi Prasetya were convicted over the March attack on Andrie Yunus, a senior activist with the Commission for the Disappeared and Victims of Violence. The world already had a big plane problem. The war on Iran made it much worse.

Bullets: Order backlogs for new jets will take over a decade to clear, as Airbus and Boeing cannot build or deliver planes on time. As a result, airlines are flying older planes for far longer than they had planned. Older planes are more expensive to maintain, and are less fuel efficient than new aircraft. Jet price prices are soaring higher, doubling in major markets from a year ago, while the industry had forecast a drop in oil and fuel prices for 2026. COMAC is a Chinese aircraft manufacturer and is quickly scaling up production, but not yet fast enough to meaningfully close the gap between new plane demand, and production from the duopoly of Boeing and Airbus. COMAC is a Chinese airplane manufacturer, which builds the C919. And Chinese airlines have a major problem, which is shared by all airlines, everywhere in the world: their planes are getting older, faster than they can be replaced. Aircraft replacements are still below the levels of the previous decade: current deliveries are behind the rates of 2019. And since 2020, the number of planes over 20 years old is growing faster than new aircraft rolling off the lines. Older planes means that airlines spend more money to keep them flying. All the costs go up. They need to be more closely inspected, maintenance and repairs go up, which means higher costs for replacement parts, and the technicians. And older planes are less fuel efficient. It’s especially a problem for the most expensive parts, like engines and landing gear assemblies. So COMAC sees an opportunity, especially in China, to grab market share from Boeing and Airbus. And China overall represents the fastest-growing aviation market in the world. It will be the biggest market. India and Indonesia will also be major markets here in East Asia: And the problem with aircraft availability is global, and urgent. It’s the most significant constraint to the growth across all the markets: airlines are ordering planes, but airline manufacturers cannot build and deliver them. This is the industry update and forecast from last December, from the International Air Transport Association. Severe supply chain problems constrain the ability of airlines to grow new markets, and even to meet their demand for replacement jets. The backlog in aircraft orders is growing, and accelerating, and those same supply chain issues are impacting existing fleets and are a “drag on airline profitability.” That’s to say that the same supply chain problems that preclude Boeing and Airbus from building new planes, also mean that replacement parts are hard to come by. Production is picking up some, compared to before, but new orders are coming in even faster, so the backlogs grow. The IATA has a breakdown of the industry’s cost structures. Remember, this is from December, 2025. But things are already much worse than they thought. The industry forecast for 2026 called for a decline in fuel costs, with a consensus view for crude oil to be $62 a barrel, and jet fuel costs to drop to $88 a barrel. Fuel will be 25.7% of airlines’ operating expenses in 2026, a percent below the previous year. We all know that didn’t work out, but here’s how much they were off: the cost for jet fuel is $146.25 a barrel, and higher in the North American and European markets: We’ll return later to the fuel problem. The demand for new aircraft, compared to new production, is only worsening, and the mismatch isn’t going to go away until the 2030’s. There is a record-high order backlog of over 17,000 planes: That is 60% of the active fleet, right now. Historically, the ratio was half that. This industry wants to grow, and has placed orders, but manufacturers cannot keep up. They need 12 years of current production capacity just to meet the backlog they had, last December. There are over 5,000 planes in storage, but those need new parts and new certifications, and those are harder to get. So old planes are flying for longer, and airlines are flying the wrong kinds of planes in many markets. Most of the delays are supply-chain related. Engine manufacturers, for example, cannot keep up with production of the airframes, which are being parked until the engines get finished and installed. Tariffs blew up supply chains last year. Tariffs on China, Canada, and the EU slowed everything down and drove costs up. Add up all the new costs that were hitting airlines—before the war on Iran—and it’s over $10 billion a year. These all result from that order backlog of 17,000 planes, and airlines flying older jets for longer. A key problem for the airline industry is this duopoly; Boeing and Airbus have 90% of the market share. This chart is for narrowbody jets, which include the C919. COMAC and Embraer combine for only 9% of this market. Russia also builds narrowbody jets, but their companies are under sanction, and that is another big part of the problem. Russia is the primary source for titanium to Airbus and Boeing and the engine makers, and those companies now need special waivers to buy Russian titanium. The price is shooting higher. There are also shortages in aluminum and steel. And civilian airlines are trying to buy new planes at the same time the Pentagon and other governments are racing to build new military aircraft. “Military programs compete aggressively with commercial aviation for an acutely limited labor pool”. So everything is tight—supply chain constraints are everywhere, and costs are going up. Back to the fuel cost efficiency problems, when flying older planes. This table shows the impact on profitability at different price points for jet fuel. Remember, the industry experts believed that fuel prices would drop to 2024 levels, in 2026, and that would be a $32 billion dollar hit to industry profitability. That was based on a jet fuel price of $2.30 a gallon. Top line. But today it’s over twice that. In the US, jet fuel is over $7 per gallon at major airports. The cost of flying all those older planes drives airlines’ fuel costs up, even in peacetime. Then come the higher maintenance costs on the older aircraft. The average plane today is two years older than the ones flying in 2019. Maintenance has to be performed more often, and become more complex. More inspections for issues such as metal fatigue and stress fractures in the airframes, for example. More planes need to be overhauled and retrofit completely, which further strains the supply chains for parts, and on skilled labor. And Airbus and Boeing cannot keep up with deliveries for new planes. Airbus had previously been meeting their delivery schedules better than Boeing, but now Airbus can’t get engines fast enough to meet their delivery schedules. Boeing, Airbus, and Pratt & Whitney all use a just-in-time inventory management system, which is failing in practice as well as in theory—JIT means that production happens as new orders come in: that is when parts are ordered and work begins, to meet demand. But the demand is there, and the production is not. So Pratt can’t build engines, so Airbus can’t deliver planes. And making it all worse is that the airlines need to keep their old planes flying with old engines, which in turn need replacement parts to make that go. Everyone is blaming everyone else, and we’re back to the duopoly and monopolies: there are too few manufacturers, and a tiny group of companies are happy with the way things are right now. Backlogs are a big problem for airlines, but an opportunity for Pratt & Whitney to make money selling new engines to Airbus, as well as old ones to the airlines—at high prices, and there’s nothing that the airlines or Airbus can do about it. So this is where we are. This is as of 30 April, so 4 months in to 2026. Airbus production—not deliveries, but production—was 226 planes. At Boeing it was 190. A smaller number actually were delivered, so let’s just look at best case. 226 plus 190 is 416. Divided by 4 months is 104 planes. At 104 planes per month, it will take 159 months, or over 13 years, to clear that backlog of 17,000 planes. Back in December the was “nearly 12 years” to clear, and just a few months later the backlog jumped to over 13 years. Some airlines are responding by ordering many more planes than they need. Alaska Airlines just ordered 110 new Boeing narrowbodies and bought an option for 35 more, and when you read the language of the announcement carefully, a large part of the order was simply to hold more space in line, and “secure critical delivery slots” and thereby pay up front for some flexibility later. Their forecast is for 189 new aircraft to build new routes and replace older planes, but placed options for another 71. So this all represents a big opportunity for COMAC, but also a serious challenge. The C919 is in active service in China, with high utilization rates in the markets where it is used. It’s now at 29 airports and flown by the three largest domestic carriers. But the challenge now is scaling up. Next year COMAC hopes to produce 150 aircraft, and 200 per year starting in 2029. But that’s still not going to move the needle, much, on that global deficit right now of 17,000 planes. Eventually we should expect that the commercial aviation industry will go the same way all the others have, and China will eventually take it over. China has no problem buying titanium from Russia, for example. And there are no supply chain issues in China for aluminum, or in steel; no shortages of skilled labor. COMAC will sell all the planes they can build, and by 2050 will have blown up the duopoly that Airbus and Boeing have now. But that’s a long way off, and things will be a lot worse for this industry until things are much better. Be Good. Indonesia’s native hornbills are being hammered by online and offline trade

Among the many inhabitants of Southeast Asia’s dense rainforests are hornbills — a group of birds that stand out with their raucous call, large, ostentatious beak and colorful feathers. Indonesia harbors 13 species, the most of any country in Asia, three of which are found nowhere else. Hornbills are rapidly losing their homes as large swaths of Indonesian forests are cut down to make way for plantations, mining, dams, cities and other development, or are scorched by wildfires. Trade in these birds also poses another serious threat. Hundreds of hornbills are entering the illegal trade in Indonesia, according to a new study published in the journal Wild, some of which are offered for sale online. They’re sold alive as pets or killed for their casques, the ivory-like appendages above their beaks, and their taxidermied heads, which are displayed as home décor. To understand the scope of this trade, researchers analyzed police and customs confiscation data and surveyed online ads from 2015 to 2025. They learned that this illegal commerce is widespread and involves every Indonesian hornbill species and some from Africa and the Philippines as well. Most birds were sold alive, suggesting they’re bought as pets. Indonesia’s grassroots farmers face increased unpredictability, experts say

The intersection of environmental breakdown, climate change and economic instability has emerged as a primary threat to the resilience of smallholder farmers in Indonesia, according to researchers and local entrepreneurs who spoke at a recent convention. During the 2026 Asia Grassroots Forum, held in Jakarta on June 3 and 4, Alex Arnall, an associate professor for environment and development at the University of Reading, U.K., said climate change has become an “agent of exclusion,” creating a “double exposure” for farmers who must simultaneously navigate global market volatility and erratic weather. The Asia Grassroots Forum focused on building sustainable business ecosystems for smallholders. Previous research showed extreme weather events can affect farmers in southeast Asia by damaging crops, agricultural infrastructure like irrigation systems and farm equipment, and by increasing operational costs and reducing revenues. A 2024 report found that every 1% increase in average temperature raises the price of food production by 1% to 2% across Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia and the Philippines. A naturalist travels somewhere remote, perhaps on a wooden ship, and traipses through the jungle to encounter an animal or plant never before described by science. The intrepid explorer brings back specimens or observations to a museum, where they can be compared, named and described. There is some truth to this stereotype. Between 1854 and 1862, scientist Alfred Russel Wallace travelled through the Malay Archipelago, discovering animals and insects unknown to Western science. This led him to the theory of evolution by natural selection, contemporaneously with Charles Darwin. Antarctica had its own era of discovery. In 1840, scientists on a French expedition encountered what we now know as Adélie penguins. Imagine seeing penguins for the first time: strange black-and-white birds waddling over the ice, sliding on their bellies, leaping from freezing seas. Of course, “discovery” is a loaded word. Many animals and plants described by Western science were already known to Indigenous peoples and local communities. What changed was their entry into the formal scientific naming system – the global process by which species are compared, classified and recognised. Today, scientists are still finding new life in remote places and hidden inside the DNA of animals we thought we already knew. We still explore unknown worlds Scientists still discover species this way: by probing Earth’s nooks and crannies and travelling to remote places to study what lives there. Last year, I was onboard the scientific vessel R/V Falkor (too) in Antarctica’s Weddell Sea, where one scientific team was searching for seafloor methane seeps. These are not just geological curiosities. Methane seeps create unusual habitats that harbour strange communities of life fuelled not by sunlight, but by chemicals rising from below. Scientists have already found new microbial diversity at Antarctica’s first known active methane seep. Not all hard-to-reach worlds are underwater. In Papua New Guinea’s Southern Fold Mountains, camera traps captured a shy, ground-dwelling bird slipping through rugged limestone forest. Scientists described it as a new species in 2025, the hooded jewel-babbler. But there is another kind of discovery happening too. White microbial mats underwater are telltale signs of seeping methane. Andrew Thurber, CC BY-ND Hidden species in familiar animals Some species are not hidden because they live at the bottom of the sea or deep in a mountain forest. They are hiding in plain sight. Gentoo penguins are a good example. With their bright orange bills and comic waddle, they are familiar to anyone who has visited Antarctica. To most observers, they are simply “gentoos”. But our new research shows gentoo penguins are not one widespread species, but four. Our 2020 study first showed major genetic and physical differences between gentoo penguins from different islands. Now, using whole genomes – the complete set of genetic instructions inside an animal – and ecological modelling, we found these penguins are not just separated by distance, but have adapted to different Southern Ocean worlds. They look very similar to their relatives, but if we study their DNA, body measurements, behaviour and ecology, it’s clear they are separate species. Species discovery has always depended on the tools available. Early naturalists relied on what they could collect: feathers, skins, eggs and bones. These museum collections are like time machines and remain incredibly important. Today, whole genomes tell us if animals have different coding. Ecological models show whether animals live in different environmental conditions. Mathematical approaches test whether groups are evolving independently. In other words, we are learning to see biodiversity in higher resolution. This sharper view is changing how we understand familiar animals. For a long time, giraffes were considered one species, but genetics suggests they are four. My own work on forest birds in Madagascar found a new species of Newtonia bird. The Tapanuli orangutan is a powerful example. This Indonesian great ape from Sumatra was described as a new species in 2017, based on genomic, anatomical and behavioural evidence. It was extraordinary to recognise a new great ape in the 21st century, and sobering to realise fewer than 800 may remain. Again and again, the message is the same. The natural world is more complex than we know. And sometimes, by the time we recognise that complexity, a species may already be in deep trouble. Conservation laws, threatened species lists and monitoring programs usually work at the species level. If several species are mistakenly treated as one, a declining species can be hidden inside a larger group that looks secure. As we stand at the precipice of Earth’s sixth mass extinction, this has never been more important. Recognising hidden biodiversity does not solve conservation problems by itself. But it helps us ask better questions. Which species are increasing? Which are declining? Which have not been counted for decades? These questions are urgent, because we are racing to understand biodiversity while climate change and habitat loss reshape life on Earth. Even now, in an age of satellites and genome sequencing, Earth still has secrets. Not only in the most remote places, but in the first animals we learn to recognise as children: penguins, giraffes, orangutans. The closer we look, the more life reveals itself. Our task now is to keep looking and protect the richness that was there all along.

Rooting it in definitive production relations as “petty commodity production” (marxist) or “non-capital” (sanyal) is rescuing it from political & theoretical irrelevancy. This touches upon the mainstream interpretation of the term marhaen in the popular consciousness of the people in Indonesia and Malaysia, where it kind of takes the form of the “masses” or “popular classes” but at a technical level would specifically refer to petty commodity traders and (possibly) the peasantry in a semi-colonial pre-capitalist society (uniquely found in Indonesia and Malaysia). The analytical distinction is necessary of course in identifying those that signify a revolutionary or progressive consciousness/material interest against the economic system of that period. The image itself is not without problems and contestations, because technically not all-wage earners possess the same class positions with relation to production, and thus material interests that would be classified as “proletarian”. This falls into debates on productive labour, labour aristocracy, the petty bourgeoisie, the middle class, and the professional managerial class (PMC). Own-account worker in the context of a largely agricultural economy like Indonesia also poses it’s own sort of questions distinct from that of a fully (industrial/financial) capitalist mode of production. Nonetheless it does signify a quantitative structural change of the Indonesian political economy - but has that resulted in qualitative differences and any visible political change? What other sort of statistics can help characterise the Indonesian economy?

The imperialists of your country are the first, along with the Zionists, to drag the world into world war. It is not only and not so much your task to oppose the imperialist bourgeoisie of your country and prevent it from devastating the world with its infamous attacks, but above all, you are offered the opportunity to overthrow it. On the eve of World War I, Lenin predicted that either the socialist revolution would prevent the war or the communists would turn the war into a revolution. This is what happened in the countries where the working class, led by its Communist Party, succeeded in winning, building the first socialist countries, foremost among them the Soviet Union and the People’s Republic of China. But it has not yet succeeded in doing so in any imperialist country; that is why we are once again embroiled in a world war. Today, for communists, the situation is such that either we bring about a decisive leap forward in the socialist revolution in the imperialist countries—the conflagration that will liberate the world from the imperialist system and thereby halt the spread of World War III—or the destructive spiral into which the rule of the imperialist bourgeoisie is dragging the masses of most of the world will continue to worsen. You confirm to us that times are changing. Your Secretary writes in the preface to the book on The Revolutionary Science of Marxism-Leninism by J. Sykes that we are at a turning point, that a new communist movement is rising in the U.S. and a mobilization of the masses is taking place the likes of which have not been seen since the 1960s and 1970s. We have seen, after those years, the communist movement retreat, up to the fall of the Soviet Union, and the beginning of the period of dark reaction that that fall would generate, as Stalin foresaw. Now that period is coming to an end and the resurgence is beginning—a leap into the new wave of the proletarian revolution. The qualitative leap of the new wave of the proletarian revolution and the rebirth of the communist movement is the conquest of power in one or more imperialist countries, foremost among them the U.S., which acts as the world’s policeman, and Italy, where the Vatican is headquartered. It is up to the communist movement in the U.S. to eliminate imperialism in their country, just as it is up to the communist movement in Italy to eliminate the Vatican, but the elimination of both concerns the entire world communist movement. Our main commitment lies in advancing the socialist revolution in Italy, but at the same time we are paying increasing attention to the communist movement in the U.S., of which you are a part. The commitment, in this case, is to forge ties in three areas. One area is the development of mutual understanding and joint action. The retreat of the communist movement has led to a weakening of relations among the various organizations that compose it at the international level, to the extent that communists in one country know very little about the conscious and organized communist movement in other parts of the world, and joint action remains at an embryonic stage or is confined to one or another of the international coordinating bodies that do not communicate with one another. Overcoming this limitation is an aspect of the ongoing rebirth of the communist movement. A second area is mutual solidarity against repression. The imperialist bourgeoisie, in this terminal phase of the economic, political, social, and cultural crisis, is displaying all its ferocity, and repression is a weapon it resorts to with increasing frequency and intensity. The CARC Party is a component of the Caravan of the (New) Italian Communist Party, the collective of organizations and individuals following the (New) Italian Communist Party toward the goal of making Italy a new socialist country, and this Caravan has always faced repression, since its founding more than forty years ago—the same period when the FRSO was founded. It faces it today as well, with the repressive action against the CARC Party on April 21, searches, seizures of materials based on a charge that is the same one with which the fascist regime imprisoned Antonio Gramsci and led him to his death, and with fines of thousands of euros for demonstrations against fascists and Zionists. We would like to thank FRSO here, which was among the first communist organizations—among many—to express their solidarity with us at the international and national levels. Mutual cooperation in confronting repression is open. A third arena is frank and open debate. The course of the revolutionary process in the U.S. differs from that in Italy in many specific ways, but the two processes also share universal, common aspects regarding which debate is essential. Above all, we share the fact that FRSO and P.CARC operate in imperialist countries—countries where the socialist revolution has not yet triumphed, where the ground is therefore new and unexplored. Therefore, we have begun studying your theoretical works, and we will present you with a summary of ours. Among the various themes, the first is that of party building. The people of the United States face one of the most difficult periods in the history of their class struggle. The drastic decline of U.S. dominance in industry, agriculture, and foreign trade has given rise to various forms of oppression against the working class within the United States as well as against the peoples of colonies and semi-colonies, and even weaker capitalist nations. Competition among financial oligarchies has become far more intense and fierce. The move by many nations to restrict the use of the Dollar to avoid the burden of the crisis has accelerated this decline. The struggle for energy and natural resources is becoming increasingly difficult for the United States to win through conventional politics. The economic decline has had a significant impact on the decline of the liberal democratic system that has long been revered and promoted throughout the country. Currently, in the eyes of people from various nations, the United States is nearly on par with non-industrialized nations in terms of protecting the basic rights of its people. President Donald J. Trump’s use of police actions backed by the military to enforce federal government policies and programs—including immigration policies and anti-LGBT policies—has drawn opposition not only from the oppressed and exploited people of America but from the entire world. Although fascism is recognized as the most reactionary offspring of the capitalist system, people in many countries are still shocked to witness the blatant suppression of freedom of speech on college campuses during the campaign against Israeli Zionist aggression against Gaza-Palestine. Also, whether they believe it or not, they witness the brutality of the Federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in every operation. Meanwhile, violent state repression toward African Americans, Chicanos, and other oppressed nationalities continues unabated, as does the state’s desperate attempt to dampen the flames of the pro-Palestine solidarity movement. As a semi-colonial and semi-feudal country dominated by the joint class dictatorship of the big comprador bourgeoisie, and big landlord class and bureaucrat capitalists—all under the direction of U.S. imperialism—the Filipino people feel acutely the worsening contradictions of the current order. The deadly hunger already experienced by the toiling masses has been exacerbated by the sharp economic crash deterioration following the U.S.’ war on Iran, coupled with the refusal of the reactionary Philippine state to heed the people’s demands to repeal burdensome taxes and other anti-people and anti-poor policies and measures, that would mean lowering their profit margin or angering their U.S. corporate patrons. The self-serving nature of those in power was thoroughly unmasked in massive corruption scandals made public last year, as well as in the current political circus between the Marcos and Duterte dynasties playing out ahead of the 2028 Philippine presidential elections. Beyond acting in their own interests, however, the reactionary classes of Philippine society are wholly subservient to their imperialist masters. With dizzying speed, the entire country is being made into the U.S.’ forward base in its campaign to encircle and contain China and assert dominance in the Asia-Pacific region. More de facto and secret U.S. military bases are being built across the country, which house both U.S. weapons and troops under the guise of “rotational” presence. Just this month, the U.S. military “assisted” by Philippine militaries — the Armed Forces of the Philippines — fired a Tomahawk missile from a civilian airport into a civilian community more than 600 kilometers away, endangering the lives of hundreds of thousands of Filipinos who were in the path of the low-flying missile, in a clear act of war provocation against China. The firing was part of the Balikatan war games—just one of over 500 joint military exercises set to happen this year that all aim to project power and heighten tensions with China. Even the Philippine economy is being transformed to serve the U.S.’ war economy, with the push to establish a US-controlled “economic security zone,” along with plans of building an ammunition factory, refueling hub for warships, and other infrastructure already under way. The biggest obstacle to the complete transformation of the Philippines into a launching pad for U.S. imperialist war is the Filipino people’s democratic revolution being waged through protracted people’s war. For 57 years, the Communist Party of the Philippines has led this struggle for national and social liberation, and has spread the fire of revolution across the archipelago. It has thwarted every attempt of every reactionary U.S.-backed regime to destroy it, making a fool of presidents and generals who promise every year to end it by some arbitrary deadline. Still, the state’s fascist terror unleashed against revolutionary forces and the broad masses of people struggling for change is very much a reality, especially in the Philippine countryside. Last month, the Filipino people suffered a loss that continues to weigh heavily on us all. On April 19, the butchers of the Philippine military committed a massacre—a war crime—by indiscriminately firing upon communities in Toboso, Negros Occidental. Nineteen people were martyred that day: ten Red fighters of the New People’s Army and nine civilians, including people local to the area as well as a student leader, journalists, peasant organizers, and community researchers who went to Negros to learn from among the peasant masses. Among them were Lyle Prijoles and Kai Sorem, two Filipino-American activists who were leaders in the Filipino community in the US, leaders who chose to sacrifice their comforts living in the U.S. to serve the toiling masses back home. The enemy would like to portray this massacre as a strategic victory against communism. It is the opposite. In a statement following the Toboso massacre, the New People’s Army-Northern Negros under the Roselyn Jean Pelle Command reminds us that the very reason the U.S.-Marcos regime targeted and continues to target Negros is because of the strength of the revolution there. They state that in 2025 alone, “Party membership grew 30 percent” and “new branches were formed in broad areas.” Further, “membership in secret mass organizations grew nearly 50 percent, while the number of individuals reached by the revolution tripled. The NPA in Northern Negros also doubled the range of its area of operations and launched at least 19 guerrilla offensive and counter-offensive actions. It conducted these operations up to towns near the provincial capital and populated areas.” What is happening in Negros shows us that the U.S.-Marcos regime is fighting a losing battle, because, as our founding chairperson Jose Maria Sison declared in his last statement before passing, “the Filipino people’s democratic revolution is invincible.” As long as the toiling masses’ aspirations for land, for sovereignty, and for a future crafted by our own hands continue to exist, so will the people’s revolution. The martyrdom of the Negros 19 has only fueled and fanned the flames of struggle across the country, and among the Filipino diaspora and our allies overseas. In their wake, thousands more will raise high the red flag of people’s war. Comrades, the enemy is frightened because of the success of our people’s movements the world over, from the U.S., to Palestine, to Iran, to the Philippines. Each victory in one of our countries represents a victory for all. And with our weapon of proletarian internationalism wielded by the broad anti-imperialist united front, we know that no tactical setback can prevent the inevitability of peoples’ victories against the yoke of imperialism, fascism, and all reaction. Transmission Error

This is a very romanticized version of American intervention in WW2. The bitter truth is that we had guys with Nazis war trophies back home who were waving Confederate flags the year after their deployment ended. Hell, we had guys like Mark Fuhrman, who were decorated detectives in the LAPD back in the early 90s with a naked well-established fetish for European fascism. And that’s before you get into the Ratlines that imported thousands of Nazis into Latin America under cover of the CIA and Opus Dei. This isn’t something that got lost in translation or distorted through history. It’s a direct consequence of American fascism reproducing itself in America as an outcropping of American tendencies. The Stars and Stripes is as much a symbol of fascist oppression in Vietnam and Indonesia and the DRC and the Oklahoma Reservation system as any German flag.
