I did cut off a long time childhood friend after a sudden realization that his entire personality was elaborate peacocking and he hadn’t matured since 8th grade. We never really argued or anytbing, but I had always thought maybe he was oddly committed to stuff he had only learned about the previous week. I’ve seen him change religion more than 10 times. He’s also been outspoken about multiple contradictory political beliefs. I don’t mean peacocking like his style of clothes was extravagant, rather, he would always try to seem and sound impressive or interesting. But just insofar as what he thought would get emotionally naive young women to sleep with him. Like he kept going to our college for years after he dropped out, just to hang where students would congregate. He’d bring an acoustic guitar, try to make idle conversation with women, then throw in whatever persona he had adopted that month, like “Oh I’m actually a recent convert to reform Judaism and I’m really interested in particle physics.” One time he claimed to be following bushido and would carry around a samurai sword (resulting in an instance where he was banned from Starbucks for a year). His behavior never really clicked for me because I’m naive and I wasn’t aware I was asexual, so I didn’t clock that all he truly cared about was meeting college aged women to sleep with. But about a year ago I got on a routine discord call with him and some other folks just to catch up, since none of us live nearby anymore. And my guy had a big announcement that he was converting back to Catholicism. He had literally just gone on a Buddhist pilgrimage to some special island in Japan not three months prior. He had a Buddhist wedding. Oh yeah I forgot to say he’s married, but he still does the same thing of trying to seem interesting to specifically naive college aged women. That always seemed like his target, was a 19 year old girl who came from a religious upbringing in the south who had never heard of… Zoroastrianism or whatever other obsession he had that month. So when he said he was becoming Catholic again, I guess that’s when it hit me somehow. He only ever cared about getting laid and that kinda put in question why he ever even hung out with me. Not like in that he wanted to sleep with me, I wasn’t his type, but like how he’d suddenly abandon me when a pretty lady appeared.

Part of the reason those positions are reached is because of the bullying one receives often comes from “normies” who are the most aesthetically conscious. If you take shit from Chad and Stacy your whole life you learn, perhaps even subconsciously, that biceps and cologne/eyeliner and perfume are signals that someone is a certain type of way; and you never want to be what they are, or bring that energy to the table.

A new state law limits Florida communities’ aims to offset greenhouse gas emissions that are warming the global climate and intensifying disasters such as hurricanes. Specifically, HB 1217 prohibits local governments from pursuing net-zero emissions goals. At least 10 cities and counties have implemented such policies, including Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Orlando, and Leon County, where Tallahassee, the state capital, is located. But the new law will not necessarily upend these policies, said Bradley Marshall, senior attorney at Earthjustice, an advocacy group. “It’s certainly meant to scare municipalities and local governments from trying to do things to further net-zero policies,” he said. “Now, its exact impact and what it exactly prohibits is probably up for some debate. Things that are adjacent to it—emissions reductions and even climate change reduction policies—on their face will not run afoul at all of a ban on adopting a net zero policy.”

Florida Republican Representative Kat Cammack was widely criticized after opening up to reporter Tara Palmeri about having trouble accessing abortion for an ectopic pregnancy in Florida after she helped pass a six-week abortion ban in the state. Cammack told the Wall Street Journal that she faced delays in receiving treatment for a life-threatening ectopic pregnancy shortly after Florida’s six-week abortion ban took effect in May 2025. Cammack blamed those delays not on the law itself but on what she described as misleading messaging from abortion-rights advocates that had made healthcare workers fearful of legal repercussions, telling the Journal: “It was absolute fearmongering at its worst. There will be some comments like, ‘Well, thank God we have abortion services,’ even though what I went through wasn’t an abortion.'"

A large fish once feared extinct in Cambodia has been recorded in the country’s waters for the fourth time since 2020, renewing hope for the species. The Mekong giant salmon carp (Aaptosyax grypus), a critically endangered large-sized freshwater fish, was formally described from the Mekong River in 1991. Over the next 14 years, there had been only 20 formal records of the species; none since 2005. However, Bunyeth Chan, a researcher at Svay Rieng University in Cambodia, and his colleagues confirmed three observations in a 2024 study. The three carps had been caught by fishers from different parts of the lower Mekong River Basin between 2020 and 2023. “Those recent observations indicate that the species persists, and that one or more populations of A. grypus inhabit the Cambodian Mekong and its tributaries,” the researchers wrote. You would actually be able to design them to be much simpler without the smoke stack as well. Several major design benefits that would trade off the management of nuclear fuel handling. The handling of the core could be such that it’s contained during the entire swap out procedure for safety, so no radiation exposure occurs, and the vehicle wouldn’t need to wait long.

what I appreciated about the ending is that you had two competing religions throughout the show and at different points different prophecies come true, making it unclear who’s “right.” and then you get to the end and it turns out no one had any idea what was going on, they (and us as viewers) were all being taken for a ride. religion is based on faith, but in the world of BSG you have this unknowable godhead who you can’t even conceptualize in order to have faith in. the “it doesn’t like to be called that” line at the end is so good because it shows just how far off base everyone was in the show, and by extension real life. you’re wrong to even anthromorphize it by referring to it as a person. that’s (neo)platonism! granted i don’t think any of that was intentional. they definitely tried to pull a deus ex machina because they had set up a bunch of questions that they couldn’t answer. but what is ultimately a cowardly finale accidentally ends up saying something very profound

Boardgames I would love to have but nobody I know has any interest in them and has last played one in childhood. But the DVD/CD thing is really neat. Thrifting in stores or online in general has become a lot of fun and I’ve gotten family into it as well, especially with CDs and vinyls. Also saves a lot of money and it helps with prioritizing what you are really interested in. I still have the occasional streaming service but looking at which movies/series/music we own physically, I may be more selective if only physical products are available. Not having to worry about content suddenly disappearing due to licensing rights is MUCH better anyway.

North Macedonia, once among the first countries in the Western Balkans to receive EU candidate status, is now watching Montenegro and Albania move ahead in the accession process while it remains “hostage to political calculations”, according to a statement from the Alliance for Albanians in the Republic of North Macedonia. The party stressed that constitutional amendments remain the key condition for unlocking progress in European integration, a point it says has been repeatedly emphasized by senior EU officials. It further criticized the government and its coalition partner VLEN, arguing that despite earlier promises to prioritize EU integration, they are now silent and remain in power “without guarantees, results, or accountability”. The statement warned that every lost year means fewer investments, a lower standard of living, and increased emigration of young people seeking their European future abroad, adding that the current stagnation is a political choice for which someone must be held accountable.
