is revolt chat any better?

I’ve been exploring alternatives to Discord and came across Matrix clients, Guilded, and Revolt. The Matrix protocol is open-source, decentralized, federated, and can be self-hosted. However, Matrix clients seem to struggle on mobile; my friends often complain about how slow and buggy the Element client is. As for other Matrix clients, they don’t seem to like the interface either. Guilded, unfortunately, lost its charm when Roblox acquired it. Revolt is open-source and doesn’t have paid features like Discord, or so I’ve heard. But is that the only thing that sets it apart?

So fun watching someone try Linux as their first OS, none of the “Linux is difficult because I learned how to use Windows” or “Linux is bad because it’s not exactly like Windows” comments :D Roblox stopped working when the devs intentionally blocked Wine, but he just shrugged and said he didn’t play it that much anyway. It’s a little heart breaking hearing him often ask which parts he could buy to get more FPS, because he’d need to replace half the computer to get a newer CPU and DDR4 RAM, since I suspect the DDR3 could be the current bottleneck. But other than that he’s very happy with the computer.

I swapped the entire school computers to linux mint

And IMO if one of those students can get Roblox working on Linux, they have solved a harder problem than any homework they would be given 😆. I’m curious how ootb mint works out for this usecase. Any chance we could get a 6mo update later? I’m particularly curious how well it holds up against non-admin users who may constantly be trying to get root-level access. There’s almost certainly going to be one student who figures out a local privilege escalation.

Let's talk actual tactics for how to raise commie kids

I’d play TrueAnon for kids before i’d do blowback. Brace and Liz are crude, rude weirdos, but some of their shows are fairly lighthearted while blowback is frequently horrifying. Old street fight episodes might work because it’s often weird old guys shooting the shit and being charming. Honestly, i think it’s fine for kids to cuss and know about sex and drugs and bad music, but kids need to be at least 12 before they’ve got anything like the emotional resilience to start digging in to the holocaust and us foreign policy. Citations needed is a good one, though. It’s all about being clever and knowing when the adults are lying and i think that would appeal to a certain kind of serious minded kid. Maybe try not-explicitly leftist pods that analyze movies, games, and culture? If you can find a pod with okayish politics breaking down themes in the latest marvel slop or talking about the nitty gritty of something happening in Roblox the kids might relate to that. What about pods on trains, planes, and automobiles? An interest in heavy industry is a decent oblique way to get kids interested in economics, and from there politics.

Linux gaming is growing! The Roblox client Sober was downloaded 1.3 million times this year.

You know, it’s now occuring to me that I have absolutely no clue what Roblox actually is. It’s been around forever, I’ve been seeing gift cards for it in stores for I’m pretty sure well over a decade, I hear lots of talk about all of the dangers and how addictive it is for kids, etc. But I haven’t the foggiest idea what the game is actually like. To the best of my knowledge I don’t think I’ve ever even seen a single screenshot of it, at least not one that was clearly labeled as being from Roblox. And while I’m a childfree curmudgeon in my 30s, I do have a few friends with kids that I see with some regularity, and I’ve never heard any of them mention Roblox even in passing. I feel like I’m in a really weird bubble of roblox-ignorance, I’m not exactly mad about it, but it feels weird that for as big as Roblox is supposed to be that I’ve never seen anyone talk about the actual game, just how big of a problem it is.

My youngest son has a story just like this, but he would have been a toddler without anything to play Roblox on in that time-frame. Damn, I wish he liked anything like beetles or stamps or whatever, even half as much as he likes the most disappointing sorts of video games, and no, I don’t mean trash games, I mean abandonware of the RFID/janky-peripherals variety.
