Oh you know old.reddit its next. I can still log in after my mass banning. So I get all the subs I like (not mains, hobbies), they get no ad revenue as I adblock everything. They just get a BS stat that I was there and they killed off my engagement stats because of the frivolous ban. Its like they can’t see they are driving towards a cliff.

I’m looking for some advice from people who have experience with hawthorn bonsai, especially if you’ve started them from seed. Last year I tried air layering a mature hawthorn growing in my yard, and it was a complete failure. I recently talked with a family member who’s been doing bonsai for years, and they told me hawthorns are notoriously difficult to air layer, to the point that many experienced growers don’t even bother trying. At least that made me feel a little better about it. My next thought is to grow one from seed. From what I’ve read, hawthorn seeds can take a year or even two before they germinate because of their dormancy requirements. I’m patient enough to wait if that’s the best approach, but I’d love to hear from people who have actually done it. A few questions I have: Have you had success growing hawthorn from seed, and is there anything you wish you had known before you started? Are there any tricks for improving germination rates or shortening the process? If you were starting a hawthorn bonsai today, would you choose seeds or another method instead? More generally, what advice would you give someone interested in starting bonsai from seed? Any common mistakes to avoid? One other challenge I’ve run into is overwintering. I’m in USDA Zone 5b, and I’ve struggled to keep young trees healthy through the winter. If anyone in a similar climate has recommendations for protecting seedlings or young bonsai during dormancy, I’d really appreciate hearing what has worked for you. Thanks in advance; looking forward to learning from people who know more before I commit to a project that’s above my experience.

Good day sirs and mamas. I have been tracking the options activity on our jovial mascot Wendys. Things are starting to look good here wanted to share some metrics I’m following. The cost to borrow (short) went from 3% to 34% since we started poking the bears. There are about 200,000 open puts for next week between 6.5-8.5. Most of them out of the money. There’s going to be mechanical buy pressuring into next week as the delta on those puts goes to 0. There’s also a fuck ton of calls in the august chain and some even further out. It looks like this pos has everything it needs to squeeze. If the 8.5p go OTM before next Friday it should light the candle. Either way boys we must fight for our mascot and our tendies or else its ZJ’s behind WENdys. If you are wondering if this is a pump and dump or a real squeeze potential, the options structure suggests a real structured move here.

As the right-wing majority on the US Supreme Court on Tuesday handed down a 6-3 ruling that campaign finance reform advocates warned would give special interest groups and rich donors yet another way to curry favor with politicians, a new report from government watchdog Public Citizen revealed how “corporate supremacist” groups have already set records for spending in this year’s midterm elections. There are still more than four months to go until the general election, but according to "The Rise of Corporate Supremacist Super PACs,” by research director Rick Claypool, this campaign cycle accounts for nearly one-third of all corporate political spending since the 2010 Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission (FEC) ruling. That decision has enabled corporations and groups including super political action committees (PACs) to spend unlimited money on elections, and in the 2026 cycle alone, they have already spent $517 million—“a figure sure to soar as the November general election approaches,” said Public Citizen. “These totals reference disclosed political spending, not any contributions from dark money organizations that keep donors secret,” the group emphasized. The amount spent this year by Big Tech, fossil fuel companies, the cryptocurrency industry, and other sectors whose bottom lines could benefit from lax government regulations represents a sizable chunk of the $1.58 billion that corporations have spent on federal elections since 2010. The 2024 election cycle saw $461 million poured into campaigns by corporations, a sum that dwarfed previous corporate political spending. Public Citizen released its report as the Supreme Court ruled in National Republican Senatorial Committee v. FEC, striking down regulations that for decades have restricted political parties from coordinating campaign spending with candidates. The report offered more evidence that the high court “has reorganized America for the worse,” said law professor Zephyr Teachout. Four industries—crypto, artificial intelligence, Big Tech, and online betting companies—have spent $294 million collectively to influence the elections, said Public Citizen, accounting for 57% of the corporate spending. In 2024, the crypto sector pioneered the playbook corporations are using this year—“prioritizing corporate priorities over parties or candidates and using their financial power to discipline sitting lawmakers and candidates.” PACs including the pro-AI Leading the Future and the sports betting industry-backed Win for America PAC are some of the top recipients of the corporate case, taking $50.1 million and $43 million, respectively. A Win for America spokesperson told Axios in April that the super PAC’s backers “seek candidates who will thoughtfully approach regulation and ensure legal sports betting can continue to support communities through billions in tax revenue and jobs across America,” while Josh Vlasto of the pro-crypto PAC Fairshake said in 2025 that the committee is "building an aggressive, targeted strategy for next year to ensure that pro-crypto voices are heard in key races across the country.” Claypool said the report shows that “a decade and a half after Citizens United, corporations are starting to spend on politics like never before.” “This corporate spending is a disaster for democracy,” he said. "If the current, broken campaign finance system remains unchallenged—and corporate spending is allowed to drown out the voices of real voters and real people—these corporate campaigns will keep multiplying, even as voting rights for individual Americans face escalating attacks.” Behind the “corporate supremacist super PACs,” reads the report, the biggest beneficiary of corporate spending is the President Donald Trump-supporting MAGA Inc., which has received $120.6 million in direct contributions from companies including Crypto.com, UnitedHealthcare, and Energy Transfer Partners. The report comes two weeks after campaigners in Montana announced they had collected signatures that far exceeded the minimum requirement to force a statewide vote on a ballot measure that, if passed, would block corporations from pouring money into elections. “Time and time again, Americans have demonstrated they want elected officials who are willing to stand up for them against the powerful and predatory corporations that attempt to dominate our daily lives,” reads the Public Citizen report. “Lawmakers can demonstrate their fearlessness and independence from corporate influence by passing legislation that empowers the public while reducing the influence of Big Business demands to prioritize profit-maximization over Americans’ health, safety, and democracy.” The group called on Congress to pass the “Abolish Super PACs Act, the DISCLOSE Act, and, ultimately, a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United.” “The intense escalation of corporate spending we are now seeing,” concludes the report, “shows that it is well past time for salvaging American democracy to be treated with the urgency that it deserves.” From Common Dreams via This RSS Feed.

Plants need nitrogen to grow. Many legumes meet this need through a symbiotic relationship: They harbor bacteria that fix atmospheric nitrogen and make it available to the plant. Until now, it was largely unclear how a perennial plant regulates this symbiosis without destroying its bacterial partners. An international team led by TU Braunschweig has now described a previously unknown mechanism: The black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) employs a newly discovered family of small proteins that specifically “reprogram” its symbiotic bacteria for nitrogen fixation while keeping them alive. First, if the road floods, that would push drain clogging debris into the road, not away from it, and while many roads can operate a slight clog at the side, it becomes more problematic at the center. Secondly, if it does clog, regardless if it was from a flood or just litter flowing into it with normal rain, some one has to go unclog it. That someone would then either have to shut down both directions or be at risk of being hit from both directions. Third, with the way roads are constructed, it would be a lot more expensive to design the sewers to either tolerate the loads (imagine a big heavy truck,) or burry it deep enough that the load is distributed around it anyways. Fourth, maintenance. If something happens where you need to dig up your sewer, putting it to the side means you’re not also digging up the road. The reverse is also true. Fifth, in freezing conditions, you don’t really want the water pooling in the center… you want it to the side, at least before it freeze back into ice.

I know that heart transplants are around but the same can’t be said for brains. Both are organs, however the brain is a delicate and complex one more the heart. Also there’s the issue of removing it literally kills the patient since the brain is connected to the spinal cord, optic nerve & etc. Even if it was possible under the current technology we have, would there still be limitations? How will memory transfer work if giving an Alzheimer’s patient a new mind, implanting a new one replacing the diseased one. The brain is sensitive to drops in oxygen levels (it dies when low). The brain is the command center for a person, without one: person is dead (literally), so there’s that dilemma. You need technology similar to a cardiopulmonary bypass but for the brain to retain essential functions and information, if you want to keep the patient alive during a mind transplant. Let’s say you managed to implant a new mind: you now have the arduous task of reconnecting every single nerve (visible and microscopic) and restoring key functions (spinal cord integration), also taking into account if the patients immune system will accept or reject that.

You can only actually answer this with knowledge of history and culture which you think is secondary. All of those things can be sorted out by experts once the killings stop. I’m not going to stop advocating for the end of the killings just because there isn’t a document on how the long term solution should look, because that’s not important right now. You said “well documented” ongoing violations of human rights in China… Yes. They’re executing prisoners. That goes against Article 3. I don’t need to know why they do it, how or when. I don’t need to know Chinese. I don’t need to know the history or the culture to criticize them for violating Article 3. Do you want to tell me that capital punishment isn’t a thing in China? You only know the present fact(debatable), think the past history is not necessary and know nothing of its essentials, so… shut the fuck up. ) I also posted this to Ask Lemmy, but I am interested in specifically other women’s perspectives as well. I have a bunch of hobbies, which range from female dominated to a solid mix of participants. However, for a hobby that has a good number of both men and women involved, there seems to be a gap in the participation and achievement levels in a way that mostly aligns with gender. A friend of mine mentioned we would have to look at how men engage with hobbies. Do you feel that the ways men and women engage with hobbies generally, but especially when they share the same hobby still differs?
I don’t have a favourite album of all time, but I do have favourites for certain genres/vibes. For just putting on as some music in the background it’s Selected Ambient Works 85-92 by Aphex Twin For metal, it’s Behemoth, either The Satanist or I Loved You at Your Darkest. For electronic music, Biceps Isles is great, and when I used to run, it’s great exercise music. But in that same vein Palaces by Flume is also excellent. For down tempo vibes it’s gotta be Mezzanine by Massive Attack, although Music has the right to Children by Boards of Canada is a very close second. And fuck actually Dummy by Portishead For more classic easy listening vibes, Chicago 2 by Chicago. For something I think anybody can enjoy, it’s plastic beach by Gorillaz. It’s their best album by far and I love a concept album. When I want to hear BEAUTIFUL music that also goes hard, it’s John Hopkins immunity. I had the title track play at my wedding and it captured the vibe perfectly. So I guess no, I don’t have a favourite album
