How tf do people who work 8-5 M-F get any life done?

Doctor’s appointments are considered as showing up to work in my country so people don’t go undiagnosed for years before it gets worse. Anyways I don’t have a life as well. I just do things that are possible to do in the evening (gym, studying, meeting friends). Weekends are for errands. Fuck life

Demolishing homes after climate disasters can be devastating. Here's how we reused precious materials

In the aftermath of the floods, many NSW homes were significantly damaged and still lay in the path of future floods. In response, the NSW government introduced a buyback scheme for eligible homes in flood-prone areas. Part of this program involved demolishing homes, with the materials discarded in landfill or used for low-value recycling, such as woodchipping and burning. Yet the homes contained valuable materials, such as hardwood timbers. Losing these homes was traumatic for the local community and an unnecessary loss of valuable resources. So the NSW Reconstruction Authority, Living Lab Northern Rivers, and the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) explored how to recover a material that is extremely difficult to source today—old-growth timber. link to report https://llnr.cdn.prismic.io/llnr/aigBHQeQX7-eXCXA_LLNR_CircularTimberResearchReport_DIGITAL.pdf

Trans Congresswoman McBride Wishes Nancy Mace "Happy Pride" After Mace Finishes 5th In Primary

Congresswoman McBride // House.gov Erin In The Morning is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a subscriber. Yesterday, Congresswoman Nancy Mace, one of the most prominent anti-trans voices in Congress, ran for the Republican nomination for governor of South Carolina—and finished in fifth place. Mace staked her political career on anti-trans activism, pushing amendment after amendment targeting transgender people during her tenure and most infamously championing the ban on Congresswoman Sarah McBride, the first openly transgender member of Congress, from using women’s restrooms in the Capitol. Now, in what trans communities online were quick to note as a familiar number—anti-trans activist and swimmer Riley Gaines also famously tied for fifth place with Lia Thomas—Mace’s political career is effectively over. She gave up her congressional seat to run for governor and cannot return. As a result, at the Equality PAC’s National Pride Gala last night, McBride took the stage as the results rolled in, referred to Mace as “Congress’s top bathroom sheriff,” noted that she was in “a respectful fifth place,” and wishing Mace a “Happy Pride.” “Today is a big day because today is the South Carolina Republican gubernatorial primary,” started McBride, continuing, "And for those of you who aren’t aware, my colleague—and Congress’s top bathroom sheriff—Nancy Mace, is on the ballot. And while not all of the votes have been counted yet, she is in a respectful fifth place. I don’t like punching down, and I believe in the politics of grace. So all I will say is: Happy Pride, Nancy,” to which she received a standing ovation. See the video here, curtesy of Advocate reporter Christopher Wiggins: The loss is significant. Mace was not merely anti-trans—she made targeting transgender people the defining project of her congressional career. She championed the ban on McBride and all transgender people from using restrooms in the Capitol, then escalated with a sweeping federal bathroom ban bill that would have applied to every federal building in the country, including major airports like Dulles and Reagan—that bill did not pass. She called trans protesters a slur while wandering the halls of the Senate with a bullhorn, having confused which building the protesters were in. She and Lauren Boebert confronted a woman in a Capitol bathroom they suspected was transgender—she was cisgender. Her entire webpage is filled with anti-trans activism and bills targeting transgender people. Now, her political career is over—at least for now. Mace made a calculated gambit to trade her congressional seat for the governor’s mansion, declining to file for reelection in SC-01. But despite spending two years remolding herself into one of Trump’s most visible culture warriors, Trump endorsed Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette instead. Without his backing, Mace finished fifth with 12%, not winning a single county in the state—including Charleston, which is her home county. She cannot return to her House seat: the filing deadline has passed. When her term ends in January 2027, Nancy Mace will hold no office. The woman who gave up a safe House seat to chase a promotion on the strength of an anti-trans brand she invented in 2024 will leave Washington with nothing to show for it. It is notable that the winners of the Republican primary are not much better on transgender issues—and one may be worse. Alan Wilson, who finished second and will advance to a June 23 runoff against Trump-backed Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette, was a leading state official in the landmark Supreme Court case in support of Tennessee’s gender-affirming care ban in United States v. Skrmetti, calling the ruling “a win for sanity and for the safety of our kids.” He also told the city of Columbia to overturn its conversion therapy ban. Evette, for her part, celebrated the Skrmetti decision as well, writing “Amen! Protecting our kids and America’s future generations is a non-negotiable.” Neither candidate, however, made anti-trans activism the theatrical centerpiece of their campaign the way Mace did. Mace built her entire political identity around targeting transgender people, gave up a safe congressional seat to ride that brand to the governor’s mansion, and it got her fifth place. As for McBride, she and countless transgender people have endured two years of Nancy Mace’s cruelty. Now, at least, trans staffers, journalists, and the nation’s first transgender congresswoman will no longer have to see Mace in the halls of the Capitol after her term ends in January 2027. And if Democrats retake the House in November, the bathroom restrictions Mace forced into place—her sole lasting act of spite—will likely be among the first things to go. These are gorgeous, I love how you mix and match!! I went looking for SH top coat tonight but chickened out because I’m a tightass and I know it’ll be half price at Chemist Warehouse soon. I’m about to take off the remnants of my 2 week old polish and try something else… after a face mask and a glass of wine.

Sad state of affairs: Mortebianca is probably the most influential ""communist"" ""educator"" we have online in Italy (More in the body of the post)

That’s what I initially thought, but then he defends Berlinguer as a true communist, which doesn’t sound like being an ultra, more like being a social democrat… He also does talk about some vague “authoritarianism” when talking about Stalin, he just gets over it quickly. I just watched that video in particular, and his thesis is this: When the USSR collapsed, it was the party members and KGB agents who were the first to sell everything and become the oligarchs. (Wtf! The so-called “stalinists” were the ones who fought the most against liberalization!) He cites Trotsky’s critique of Stalin of being state capitalism and not giving the means of production to the workers, which apparently it’s what Marx wanted since the get-go (Ignoring the whole DotP and the transitional socialist state). He also does some Gorbachev “apologia”, about how he just improved civil liberties and apparently fought to save the USSR from Yeltsin, and that the USSR collapse brough both good and bad things (Which I feel I need to ask: What good things did it bring to the marxist movement? He doesn’t say any…). He also throws some shade on “stalinists”, saying things like most of them don’t know it was Yeltsin to destroy the USSR, and other stuff like that. So yeah Gorbachev and Berlinguer are communists but not Stalin. Very sloppy work to be honest. I also noticed that the description has no sources, which he usually puts, so I’m stamping a big: on the whole video.

Homophobia in the Global South - why?

I suppose there are a few theories you could make. One could be that poor countries that nobody immigrates to usually lack the same exposure to diversity that wealthy western countries might have. The more homogeneous a society is, the more people tend to fear the few who don’t fit. Another is that the dismal conditions oppressed people face might make them lash out and look for scapegoats. Sometimes that’s good and leads to resistance against oppression, however others might take the path of least resistance instead and take their frustrations out on the ostracized. Even among those who are sympathetic, queer rights might simply be viewed as low priority in a place that is subjected to inhuman sweatshop labor and poverty.

I'm gonna be part of the thinkpad club!

Linked is the laptop I bought today off amazon. It’s got pretty good reviews and it’s a solid upgrade from this ddr3 mechanical hdd msi I’ve been using since 2013. What spurred on the purchase is that I got a bsod a couple weeks back, explorer keeps crashing, and the drive for the last 3 days has been running at 100% nonstop. I do plan on either doing something with linux mint or perhaps downgrading to windows 10 (since I have an actual copy of it at home). Hope this works out! I really, really, needed an upgrade badly.

Trump administration killed criminal investigation of GOP senator’s coal companies

The investigation examined potential criminal violations of the Clean Water Act by the multistate mining operations largely run by Justice’s son, Jay, according to current and former officials familiar with the matter. The criminal probe was a significant escalation in the yearslong effort to police serial pollution offenses by Virginia-based Southern Coal and dozens of affiliated mining operations controlled by the family. In the past decade, Southern Coal and other Justice corporations have racked up tens of thousands of alleged violations of the Clean Water Act and have been sued repeatedly by state and federal prosecutors over their failure to properly follow environmental laws at their mining sites.

"ALL POWER TO THE WORKING PEOPLE!" — 155 years of the "Internationale" — the anthem that changed the world

Exactly 155 years ago, in June 1871, right on the still-smoking barricades of the Paris Commune, the poet and communist Eugène Pottier wrote the poem “L’Internationale”. The Commune fell. Thousands of its defenders were shot. But the lines survived. Pottier hid the manuscript, and in 1887 published it in the collection “Revolutionary Songs”. A year later, the French composer Pierre Degeyter set it to music — and the anthem began its journey around the planet. The song was translated into dozens of languages. It became the anthem of the Second International. It was sung at May Day rallies, underground meetings, and demonstrations — in Germany, England, Italy, China, Latin America — everywhere where workers rose up against oppression. The anthem sounded in the trenches of the First World War, on the barricades of the Spanish Civil War, and in concentration camps. In the 1920s, it was such a powerful symbol that many governments banned it under threat of imprisonment. “This song is translated into all European, and not only European languages… Wherever a conscious worker goes, wherever fate takes him, no matter how alien he feels — without language, without acquaintances, far from his homeland — he can find comrades and friends to the familiar tune of the ‘Internationale’.” — V. I. Lenin In Russia, the “Internationale” first sounded in 1902, in the translation by Arkady Kotz. This translation became a classic: "The whole world of violence we will destroy To the foundations, and then We will build our new world, Who was nothing will become everything!" After the October Revolution of 1917, it immediately became the anthem of the new power. "And in Smolny — the crowd, spreading its chest, covered with a song of fireworks of information. For the first time instead of: — and it will be… — they sang: — and this is our last…" — Mayakovsky, from the poem “It’s Good” In January 1918, the All-Russian Central Executive Committee (VTsIK) approved the “Internationale” as the state anthem of the RSFSR, and later of the USSR. It was sung at the first subbotniks, on Red Square, at Congresses of Soviets. It sounded at the opening of the Dnieper Hydroelectric Station, in the factories of Magnitogorsk, at campfires of Pioneer camps. Soldiers marched into battle with it in 1941. The Germans listened to its lines with horror, coming from the ruins of the Brest Fortress, the catacombs of Adzhimushkay and Odessa. Workers sang it in the workshops of evacuated factories. In 1944, the new anthem of the USSR became Alexandrov’s music with Mikhalkov’s lyrics — but the “Internationale” did not fade into the background. It remained the anthem of the Communist Party. It was sung at party congresses, at May Day and November 7th demonstrations. For millions of Soviet people, it was not just a song — but an oath. “The ‘Internationale’ is the anthem of the international solidarity of the proletariat. It expresses the truth that the liberation of working people can only be the work of the working people themselves. As long as capitalism exists, the ‘Internationale’ will sound as a call to the last, decisive battle.” — V. I. Lenin, from “On the ‘Internationale’” (1913) and various speeches But at rallies in Nepal, at protests in Chile, at demonstrations and during strikes in Europe and America — its melody arises again and again. And its call — “Rise up, damned!” — remains as relevant as ever. As long as there is inequality, exploitation, and injustice. As long as someone’s labor is devalued, and someone else’s greed becomes law.
