Paragons of Virtue Arrested

It’s time to name and shame the self-proclaimed paragons of virtue. Keep it civil, though. Stories are about those who have been placed in positions of trust, and then abused that trust. Feel free to add stories of the self-righteous from other walks of life. New rule: With regard to stories of particularly, but not only, female teachers sexually assaulting students. Any comments similar to “where were they when I was in school” will earn you the right to find another forum. #notadragqueen

Inflation jumps to 4.2%, the highest since early 2023

Inflation surged in May to the highest level since early 2023, as Iran war-related fuel costs worked their way through the broader economy. Overall, the yearly inflation rate rose to 4.2% in May from a year ago, up 0.5% from April. Energy prices – a broad index that includes gasoline – soared 23% in May compared to a year earlier, U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data showed.

A U.S. Senator Pushed to Cut Firefighting Aircraft Inspections the Same Month His Former Company Failed One

A little over a year ago, Sen. Tim Sheehy floated an audacious proposal to reshape the way the federal government fights wildfires. It called for expanding the use of private planes and helicopters to quickly attack blazes while also eliminating the U.S. Forest Service’s rigorous airworthiness inspections for those aircraft. The idea stood to benefit Sheehy, a Montana Republican, personally. Before running for Congress, he founded and ran an aerial firefighting company called Bridger Aerospace, which is known for its scoopers, aircraft built to retrieve water from lakes or oceans and drop it onto fires. Since 2021, the Forest Service has paid Bridger more than $235 million for use of its scoopers, according to public records. Sheehy’s ownership of Bridger is well known, but what hasn’t been reported is that the same month the proposal leaked, a Forest Service inspector had discovered a crack in a wing of an aircraft Bridger had presented as ready for service. The scooper had failed the very inspection Sheehy sought to eliminate… “Very seldom do you find a crack in a major component,” said Paul Markowitz, a former national aviation maintenance manager for the Forest Service. Detecting such problems is the reason the Forest Service operates an airworthiness program, he added: “It’s to keep people alive.”… …“Why can’t we be inspecting ourselves?”… Since 2010, when the Forest Service implemented its current airworthiness program, the accident rate for aircraft it owns or contracts has plummeted. Between 1993 and 2010, it reported 85 accidents that killed 63 people — an average of nearly four deaths per year. Between 2011 and 2023, the last year for which data is available, the agency reported just 17 accidents and seven fatalities… …In January 2024, Bridger presented its first scooper as ready for service, only to have a Forest Service inspector find issues with the engine and electronics… In early April 2025, Bridger presented two scoopers for carding, saying they were ready for service. During one of these assessments, a Forest Service inspector found a crack in a wing…

First war crimes complaint against UAE-backed Sudan paramilitary filed in Kenya

The UAE-backed Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have been accused of genocide, massacres and sexual violence. Sudan’s civil war has raged for three years with the backing of foreign and regional powers. Now survivors have filed the first war crimes complaint in Kenya. Twelve victims backed by a Swiss legal NGO urged Kenya’s chief of prosecution to pursue the case. Associated Press (AP) reported on 9 June: It is the first attempt to prosecute members of the Rapid Support Forces, or RSF, the paramilitary group fighting against the Sudanese military for over three years, outside Sudan. Adding that: The group, which has been accused by rights organizations of committing atrocities amounting to war crimes and crimes against humanity, has ties with Kenya’s government. AP said: Kenyan President William Ruto has previously hosted RSF leader Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo for talks that he said were aimed at advancing peace efforts in Sudan, a move that sparked diplomatic tensions. The twelve survivors are working with the Switzerland-based NGO Legal Action Worldwide. Their testimony details: torture and sexual violence committed by RSF members at various locations in and around Khartoum between April 2023 and March 2025 when the Sudanese capital was controlled by the paramilitaries. The charges against RSF included that their victims: were held in inhumane conditions, with little or no food, limited access to water, and inadequate sanitation facilities. They allege that they were beaten, burned, suffocated, subjected to electric shocks, and sexually abused, including through rape. Additionally: Some were reportedly forced to transport dead bodies from detention facilities. RSF is backed by the UAE but many other nations have made the war worse through active participation or through humanitarian inaction. Rapid Support Forces and Sudan’s ongoing foreign-backed civil war The RSF, backed by the UAE, is fighting the Sudanese government, with gold interests and regional influence at stake. Numerous foreign actors, including the UK, have caused the war to fester through active participation and/or outright passivity. Israel, too, is aplayer in the war. The war in Sudan is theoretically between the Arab-majorityRSF and the Sudanese government. But foreign states pursuing their own interests are backing the combatants. Turkey, Egypt and many more countries are pursuing their own interests in Sudan too. British military components have also shown up on the battlefield in RSF hands. The UK is a major arms supplier to UAE. The RSF has killed Sudanese civilians in vast numbers. Some estimates say 150,000 people have died and more than 10 million civilians have been displaced by fighting. Sources have also claimed the UK downgraded the situation in Sudan to avoid “pissing off the Emiratis”. Drone war over Sudan Drones have been a major feature of the war. Both RSF and Sudanese government forces have deployed them. On 9 June government forces engaged RSF drones over the capital Khartoum. The Sudan Tribune reported: Military sources said a Rapid Support Forces (RSF) drone attempted to bomb military sites northwest of Omdurman before ground defences intercepted it and prevented it from reaching its targets. The same sources said air defences also engaged strategic drones in East Nile, with no casualties reported. A recent UN report said drones were a serious threat to life and limb in the war: Drones caused more than 80 per cent of civilian deaths in Sudan’s war during the first four months of 2026, killing at least 880 people. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk condemned both sides for their use of unmanned aerial weapons: Armed drones have now become by far and away the leading cause of civilian deaths. And the Ayin investigative network reported that clashes between local people and RSF allies in Sudan’s south have resulted in a village being burned: violence last month killed at least 61 civilians, including women and children, who were targeted during clashes between the [RSF-aligned] SPLM-N, led by Abdel Aziz al-Hilu and the Ottoro tribe in Kauda. Part of the conflict is due to: the Ottoro’s refusal to allow the SPLM-N-allied Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to mine in their area. The submission of a first official war crimes complaint is a good sign. Yet lawyers say allegations are hard to corroborate in a country gripped by war and devastation. A semblance of peace and justice for Sudan in this foreign-backed war may still be a long way off. Featured image via Jeff J Mitchell/Getty Images By Joe Glenton From Canary via This RSS Feed.

On My Whistle: Mexico Braces for World Cup Conflict – Soberanía 109

In episode 110 of Soberanía, hosts José Luis Granados Ceja and Kurt Hackbarth open with an in-depth look at the ongoing teachers’ protest in Mexico City. The hosts distinguish between the legitimate demands of the CNTE (including the reversal of a 2007 pension privatization) and the government’s claim that violent tactics are being used to project an image of chaos ahead of the World Cup. They note that while the union has protested every government regardless of party, the current context, with FIFA demanding cosmetic works and Ricardo Salinas Pliego calling for radical action, has created a volatile mix. Next, they turn to a rare good news story: Mexico’s first domestically produced electric vehicle, the Olinia. Priced at 150,000 pesos (about $8,600), the small car is designed for specific Mexican urban needs — school runs, market trips, mobility for people with disabilities — not for export or highway competition. The hosts explain how the vehicle fits into Plan Mexico’s broader goal of building national industrial capacity and reducing dependence on imports, while also potentially improving Mexico City’s air quality. The episode then examines the American Society gala, a who’s-who of opposition figures who gathered to hear a proposal for a “crime-fighting treaty” with the U.S. While Ambassador Ron Johnson was a no-show, the hosts note the event’s corporatist structure and its alignment with the Trump administration’s push for direct U.S. military intervention in Mexico. Losers and Haters takes aim at cartoonist Paco Calderón, whose attempt to defend Maru Campos only highlighted the opposition’s inability to maintain a consistent narrative about the Chihuahua CIA scandal, two months later and they still can’t agree on whether she collaborated with U.S. agencies or not. Soberanía On My Whistle: Mexico Braces for World Cup Conflict – Soberanía 109 June 10, 2026June 10, 2026 Mexico gears up for the World Cup amid teachers’ protests, the debut of the ‘Olinia 1’ electric car, and the Mexican opposition’s appearance at the American Society gala in Washington. Analysis Defending Mexico’s Sovereignty, the Principal Task of the Left in the Face of Imperialism’s War June 10, 2026 Defending sovereignty is now the principal task of Mexico’s left, argues Josafat Hernández, as Trump, rating agencies and the far right besiege the 4T. Mañanera People’s Mañanera June 10 June 10, 2026 President Sheinbaum’s daily press conference, with comments on housing, Mercado Libre, Plan México, the 2026 World Cup, and confidence and stability. PC Games like Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

I played for a couple of hundred hours a few years ago and didn’t spend any money at all on it. It’s perfectly fine to just ignore the gatcha stuff outside of the free pulls (or whatever it’s called) you get every now and then. I also don’t like Anime at all but this was one of the few things where it was alright.

First world transition problem: bathing?

So I’m in bath and notice that prior to HRT, when laying sideways, my hips would fully be under water. But now they don’t. I started it only 1 year and 2 mo ago (hips probably sadly fused already since I’m 28). And now part of hip is above water… Yay! But also, dangit. The bath’s filled to the brim and I love being fully submerged from neck down :(

Should I donate sperm?

I knew someone who had kids using donated sperm. Her husband wasn’t able to father kids because of a physical problem. I think she got to pick from a book of donors. She chose the same person for both of her pregnancies so her kids would be full siblings. I don’t remember her having anything negative to say about it. It seems like a service that’s useful for people in her situation.

Only one in 10 Europeans now see US as an ally, survey suggests

I believe that if Europe is going to be attacked it will be Russia supported by the US or the US and Russia working together. The billionaires and the GoP hate Europe, our regulations and not prioritizing corporations over people’s rights. They want to own us or destabilize us so they can take us down. The US has been our enemy for 50 years, look at what they did to the middle east, that’s our fate if we don’t because self sufficient.

Biggest mistake: showing her you don’t care. If you want to win anyone’s heart you gotta be vulnerable, put in some effort that comes from within yourself. And that’s scary, because making the wrong choice can backfire. But flat out saying “have some fancy schmamcy chatgtp on the house ma’am” is the equivalent of “personality? Me? Nah.”. Using AI for stuff like this => IS <= disgusting, most people just haven’t caught on yet.

Got banned for telling people that wishing public figures to "kys" is mentally unhealthy

yeah i know JK Rowling has said and done awful things to the trans community, but you really shouldn’t making posts wishing for their death or celebrating that you told them to suck on a shotgun. it’s not productive and makes allies and the trans community look criminally derange. the better thing to do is to promote the trans community and show trans are normal people that do fun things like drag shows. yeah didn’t i pissed off a mod so much that they banned me from other till a week later. also i think my bans are hilarious. yeah talking about me getting banned always gets me hilarious reactions. but feel free to explain why i deserve it

Evidence Destroyed or Lost in Death of ICE Detainee That Was Ruled a Homicide

cross-posted from: https://infosec.pub/post/47775117 A Government Accountability Office (GAO) audit released today said evidence was destroyed or went missing regarding the death of Geraldo Lunas Campos, a federal immigration detainee whose death a medical examiner later ruled a homicide by asphyxiation. The GAO reported that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) filed a “discrepancy report” in February noting that the private contractor that previously operated the Camp East Montana detention facility in Texas had failed to provide the agency with use-of-force and death reports regarding a January death of a detainee by use of force. The GAO report does not name the detainee, but the details match Lunas Campos, who died on January 3 after an altercation with guards at the camp. “In addition, evidence associated with the incident was missing or destroyed,” the GAO report said. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) initially claimed that Lunas Campos had attempted to commit suicide and died during a struggle in which “guards were trying to save him.” However, the El Paso Medical Examiner’s Office ruled his death a homicide by asphyxiation. Multiple detainee witnesses told news outlets that guards choked Lunas Campos to death after he refused to stop asking for his medication. “The officers entered, grabbed him,” one detainee told Zeteo, “and the last thing we could hear him say was: ‘They are choking me, they are choking me.’”

Brit workers waste nearly six hours a week 'botsitting'

I have only one data point: I am an embedded software developer. Recently, I had to attach and debug a stepper motor with a serial interface to an embedded control system. A bog standard task - basically, you need to initialize the motor, send it a home / referencing command, tell it to which position it has to go, and wait until it is there. Luckily for science, I had to do practically the same seven years ago with a lab system at a research institute. And in the current job, the senior engineer responsible for the motor interface is a heavy proponent of AI tools and uses these whenever he can. Oh, and there are a few more pesky little differences: In the first job, I had to write the driver myself, as I had no working code, but some examples in Python and Java. I had only a partial protocol from the vendor and had to reverse-engineer important parts myself, as the vendor preferred to supply a closed-source windows driver. in the second job, we already had working though a bit old C++98 code written by somebody who had left the company, for an earlier iteration of that embedded system, which was in production for about 8 years. in the second case, the responsible engineer relied heavily on AI he told me that in multi-threaded C++ code, you don’t need locks for shared access, because the AI didn’t tell him. I had to educate him a bit about undefined behaviour in C++. In both cases, the result had to be reliable, ad it was part of expensive and heavy machinery with high cost of failures. The outcome? The task took less than four weeks in the first job, and over six months in the second job. In the first case, the result was very reliable. In the second, it is still not fully reliable. You can point out that the second was a legacy system, which is more difficult to evolve. But that’s the point - AI does not “understand” legacy systems at all, and worse its use brings down and inhibits communication and knowledge transfer. At best, you can conclude that AI is no substitute at all for a lack of knowledge and working institutional processes.

I forgot that AAA slop devs actually made fun games that didn't have money pits

was VERY reluctant to buy marvel vs Capcom 3 when it was on sale because of the slop machines that are aaaaaaa devs. said screw it and pulled the pin. Sat on it for about a week and finally booted it up last night… I absolutely forgot that these AAAA devs used to make games, not stores with games attached. very refreshing to be bought back to the ¢25 arcade machine games again with no stupid stores, cosmetics, characters locked behind a wallet. Now if I can just find a street fighter game that is in the same vein that doesn’t have stores with stores and nonstop ads for junk.
