How far would hostile linux distributions go to hurt application developers?

The GNOME Calendar maintainers bring up the fact that Linux Mint ships a nearly 2 year old version of GNOME Calendar to its users and still keep the GNOME branding and support links. The Linux Mint team don’t see an issue with shipping old, unmaintained software and would rather ignore the issue and pretend it doesn’t exist. The recent releases of Linux Mint have downgraded several pieces of software to their older GNOME 3 versions which re-introduce fixed bugs and removes newer features. This was done to support their theming engine, despite the fact that their theming is already several releases too old for GNOME apps. In addition, they utilize several old GNOME related system components that apps rely on such as GNOME Calendar so even installing a newer version of Calendar wouldn’t be enough. This ties into a much larger issue of “Long Term Support” desktop operating systems where software can be pulled back for nearly 5 years (or even longer under a contract). Necessary fixes that are too complicated to be patched back in (or count as features) are then missed by users. Users end up using years-old flagship desktops (GNOME and KDE) and get their first impression of those projects from versions that none of the upstream maintainers support. It’s a shitty situation all around: I personally think it’s incredibly important to use the latest release of software that’s supported by upstream. GNOME does not actively support older versions of its app and shell from more than a release ago and distributions shipping these older GNOME releases can only cause damage to GNOME’s reputation. If this isn’t possible, then I don’t think it’s right to still keep the branding and trademark of the application, much less keep the original support links intact.

Finished my first coding project in a very long time. A watch face for the Pebble's.

I’ve been meaning to make new dev projects for a while. But finding the time to sit down to just code is difficult for me these days. However I wanted to make a watch face for my new watch and I just said screw it. Through a mix of using the Pebble SDK documentation, and referencing a few AI chatbots, mainly GPT-OSS I’m running in Alpaca, I was able to make it, make it run, and since it’s in C, I was able to have no memory leaks (according to the logs). I’ve uploaded the source code to Codeberg if you want to look at it, I’ve yet do document it, so hopefully it’s not too hard to understand and not a spaghetti mess. https://codeberg.org/the16bitgamer/poketech-dx ** Notes on my experience using AI to aid in coding ** When I was taught to coding, Google-fu was the goto way if/when the documentation fails you. However with both how old, and incomplete the Pebble SDK docs are, Google-fu wasn’t helping since the info it would pull was about a decade or older and mostly out of date or hard to decipher information on Stack Overflow. I would almost say using an AI along with the actual documentation and tutorials was a necessity for me to even finish this project. The AI wasn’t perfect, endlessly gas lighting me, telling me to do over the top things for functions I already implemented, and putting me down rabbit holes going no-where. But compared to what I could get from Google, and it’s ability to try and break down what the code is doing, it was a lot more helpful than I thought it would be.

There are lots of good resources here https://simracingonlinux.com/ Also the SROL discord (linked from there) is pretty active and helpful. I have an OpenFFBoard wheel and many many peripherals and all games I’ve tried apart from those that are actively hostile to linux (EA WRC, iracing) work fine. I don’t use sumhub though. From what I understand I guess it does work? https://github.com/srounce/linux-simracing-utils There are also some alternatives but I’m not directly familiar with any of them. EDIT: Sorry, forgot to clarify that I’m not a Bazzite user, I just use vanilla arch. But I don’t really think there are significant differences when it comes to this. Except if you can’t install some of these tools, in which case you might choose a non-immutable distro since hardware often requires light customization beyond what Bazzite might package.

Kaiba Goes to Hell (Feat. LittleKuriboh) | Solid jj

I’m currently hyperfixated on yu-gi-oh, and I’m 2/3rds through the second season, so I may not have all the information, here’s the infodump. Yugi is never shown to be a worse duelist than Atem. Yugi’s ace card is summoned skull, which have the same attack as dark magician but takes few sacrifices(but has fewer support cards). He wins multiple duels on his own. Yugi is also fully ready to throw hands when necessary, the pharaoh has to mind crush like 2-3 people to keep yugi from getting beat up in situations he got himself into. Not that it would help against kaiba because Kaiba is also insane and will beat the brakes off anyone. He beat up a guard on Pegasus’s island, a grown ass man. The pharaoh mind crushed the evil in his heart and it didn’t change him in the slightest. He doesn’t need the cards, he is a monster. The only duelist to show basically any strategy in the duelist kingdom arc is Mai Valentine. She continues to be a great player in season 2. She’d be the best duelist in the show, except she never pulled the ‘plot armor’ magic card. That card was a pendulum card, which… Uh… So like… Let’s you sommon a lot at once.so you need hand traps, which are actually monster cards that activate their effects in your hand. And you have to be ready for xyz summons. and link summons. And syncho summons. The game is broken to shit and has been for like 20 years.

Educational manga -- Cells at Work! (& Code Black)

I love a good educational series! The world of animation and comics can feel a bit superficial after a while, and I’ve come to really appreciate series that educate while entertaining. Over the next few days, I’ll highlight some of my favorites. First up on the docket is Cells at Work! and its (IMO superior) spin-off, Cells at Work! Code Black. Both series have released in manga and anime form. For the uninitiated, Cells at Work! personifies all the cells in the human body and reimagines the body as a (literally) living, breathing city. The series both follow the (mis)adventures of a rookie red blood cell as they learn the ins and outs of their job delivering oxygen around the body. Code Black takes the premise a step further, and places the cells in a “black” environment (in Japanese, this refers to a toxic, exploitative company with long hours and a stressful atmosphere), where the cells face down the realities of smoking, alcohol abuse, obesity, chronic stress, and more. Possibly the most admirable quality of Cells at Work! is that the reader’s learning is sustained throughout the entire work; unfortunately many “educational” series only pack a punch for the first few chapters/episodes, and then information gives way to plot and character development and turns into just another action/drama series. Not so with Cells at Work!, where every chapter explores a new bodily function and/or medical condition. What are your favorite educational series? Comment below or make a new post!
