Trump administration killed criminal investigation of GOP senator’s coal companies

The investigation examined potential criminal violations of the Clean Water Act by the multistate mining operations largely run by Justice’s son, Jay, according to current and former officials familiar with the matter. The criminal probe was a significant escalation in the yearslong effort to police serial pollution offenses by Virginia-based Southern Coal and dozens of affiliated mining operations controlled by the family. In the past decade, Southern Coal and other Justice corporations have racked up tens of thousands of alleged violations of the Clean Water Act and have been sued repeatedly by state and federal prosecutors over their failure to properly follow environmental laws at their mining sites.

Unions respond: “Reform are no friends of working people”

Reform — The trade unions have hit back against Farage’s recent pitiful appeal to try to bring the UK labour movement over to the far-right. Quite unsurprisingly, they’ve seen through his ridiculous claim that: Reform is now the party of workers. Farage also invited unions to apply for affiliation, and welcomed union leadership to attend the party conference. However, those same leaders have now told him where to shove it in reply. ‘Let’s be crystal clear’ On 8 June, the Times published an interview with Nigel Farage, trying to lure trade unions into affiliation with Reform UK. The fascist rag highlighted plummeting support for Starmer’s Labour among union members — hardly surprising in itself. However, that drop was accompanied by growing support among the membership base for Reform UK. Unfortunately for Farage, the unions themselves haven’t conveniently forgotten all the time his party have spent bashing workers’ rights. Nor, for that matter, are they in the mood to overlook the fact that Reform UK rests firmly in the pocket of big business. Responding to the Reform leader’s two-faced appeal, Trades Union Congress (TUC) general secretary Paul Nowak said: Let’s be crystal clear: Reform are no friends of working people. If they were, they wouldn’t be planning to rip up workers’ rights like day one sick pay and protection from fire and rehire and zero-hours contracts. And they wouldn’t have a leader who backs privatising the NHS. Add to that Reform’s repeated calls to scrap the Equality Act — the foundation stone of protections from discrimination in the workplace. Reform cosplaying as the workers’ friend Nowak continued: Reform can cosplay as champions of workers all they like. But the reality is they’re bankrolled by corporate interests and crypto billionaires who want the rules rigged even further in favour of the rich and powerful, not working people. And let’s not forget many of their leading voices have shown contempt for trade unions – the very organisations that won the rights and protections they want to strip away. Reform will say whatever they think it takes to win votes. But their record – and their agenda – tells the real story. The TUC highlighted that, just last year, Farage boasted that Reform would “go to war” with “leftwing teaching unions”. He even went so far as to accuse union members of: poisoning the minds of young people, not just against Reform, but against everything this country has ever stood for. We at the Canaryprefer the term ‘history lessons‘. ‘A threat to the working class’ Of course, it wasn’t just the TUC that shut the door in Farage’s smug face. Even those that have — with good cause — cut down on their affiliation with Labour gave short shrift to Reform. Unite general secretary Sharon Graham, for instance, said: If I had a pound for every politician who said they are the party of workers I’d be a rich woman. Reform have shown absolutely no evidence that they are friends of workers. Not signing up to the Employment Rights Act, inferring privatisation of the NHS and threatening local authority pensions seems the exact opposite. What needs to happen now is for the Labour party to stop dithering and be the voice of workers. A little less conversation – a little more action. Likewise, the Fire Brigades Union recognised the Reform leader for the Thatcherite waste of space that he is. The spokesperson added that: Firefighters and other workers will see this ludicrous stunt for what it is by a party led by multimillionaires that is a threat to the working class. The same also goes for the Transport Salaried Staffs’ Association. General secretary Maryam Eslamdoust branded Farage’s invite as a “desperate gimmick” that wouldn’t succeed in conning her organisation’s members. Reform ‘Don’t believe in basic rights’ Of course, Labour’s closer allies in Unison also gave Farage the middle finger. Andrea Egan, the union’s general secretary, said: It’s a con to think Nigel Farage and his rich cronies are interested in unions for anything but cold, hard cash. They don’t believe in basic rights or fair pay and consistently voted against every measure to improve them. Gary Smith, GMB’s general secretary, highlighted the fact that Reform is a refuge for Tory turncoats — hardly the workers’ friend. Speaking to the Guardian, he stated that: Mr Farage and his Reform MPs say one thing to workers and do another. They voted against sick pay and other essential safeguards. They even want to prevent people organising to make work better at places like Amazon. We see them for what they are – rebadged Tories after union members’ basic rights. The unions stand together However, the most damning vote of no-confidence of all was probably that from Community. The union represents numerous different trades, including a significant share of UK steelworkers. Not to be taken in, Community’s assistant general secretary, Alasdair McDiarmid, simply said: The Reform party has consistently voted against the interests of working-class people while under his leadership. It is clear Farage will say whatever it takes to win votes, but workers will see through his misrepresentations. Reform UK recently made a big song and dance about offering a ‘redress scheme’ for steelworkers’ pensions in an attempted appeal to a tokenised symbol of British industry. However, what far-right scum like Farage and his cronies don’t understand — what they can’t understand — is the ‘union’ part of trade unions. Reform don’t get to play divide-and-conquer with worker’s rights, trying to woo steelworkers with one hand whilst bashing teachers with the other. The labour movement stands together — and it stands firmly opposed to Farage, Reform, and the rest of the UK’s fascist wannabes. HELP : Cannot upload files bigger than ~180MB to matrix server

I am trying to increase the upload limit on my matrix server. I would like to push it to 500MB, but it keeps failing the upload past ~180MB. There is very little information about the failure, the client just says “Unkown error”, nginx says “error 499”, which means the client disconnected to quickly. Additionally, trying to recreate the failure with curl just results in a success, so the issue seems to be with the client. I tried with element-web, element desktop, element x and cinny and they all have this issue. I run a continuwuity server on a Raspberry Pi 4B, behind two nginx reverse proxies and a rathole tunnel. Continuwuity, and the two reverse proxies run inside docker compose projects. Here is my architecture : __ .( ). (`Cloud ) `-----` | V +- Outside server -+ | +---------+ | | | rathole | | | +---------+ | +--------|---------+ | +- Home network ---|-------------------------+ | +- RasPi --------|-----------------------+ | | | V | | | | +- tunnel docker -+ | | | | | +---------+ | | | | | | | nginx 1 | | | | | | | +---------+ | | | | | +-----|-|---------+ | | | | | | | | | | | +- other services -->... | | | | | | | | | V | | | | +- matrix docker --+ | | | | | +---------+ | | | | | | | nginx 2 | | | | | | | +---------+ | | | | | | | | | | | | | +------V-------+ | | | | | | | Continuwuity | | | | | | | +--------------+ | | | | | +------------------+ | | | +----------------------------------------+ | +--------------------------------------------+ Of course, I made sure to increase the upload limit in Continuwuity : max_request_size = 500000000 And in both nginx instances : client_max_body_size 500M; From what I can gather from other issues on the internet, it seems it could be related to timeout errors. Although they all seem to be talking about 2-8Gb files, I am probably running much weaker hardware than they do, so it checks out. I tried setting the following values in both nginx instances : location / { proxy_connect_timeout 600; proxy_send_timeout 600; proxy_read_timeout 600; send_timeout 600; proxy_next_upstream off; proxy_buffering off; proxy_pass ...; } And setting timeout values in Continuwuity : client_receive_timeout = 75 client_request_timeout = 180 client_response_timeout = 120 client_shutdown_timeout = 10 Since that didn’t have any effect, I bumped them by 20x and 40x respectively : location / { proxy_connect_timeout 18000; proxy_send_timeout 18000; proxy_read_timeout 18000; send_timeout 18000; proxy_next_upstream off; proxy_buffering off; proxy_pass ...; } client_receive_timeout = 3000 client_request_timeout = 7200 client_response_timeout = 4800 client_shutdown_timeout = 400 But that did not have any effect. I also looked at modifying element-web’s settings, but there doesn’t seem to be anything related to timeouts. I also saw that encrypted vs. unencrypted rooms might have an effect, but I got ~190MB max in encrypted rooms and ~180MB in unencrypted rooms. Finally, I tried using curl : curl -X POST https://server.domain/_matrix/media/v3/upload -H "Authorization: Bearer " -H "Content-Type application/octet-stream" --data @200mb.file # success # returns a mxc:// url curl -X POST https://server.domain/_matrix/client/v1/media/download/server.name/file_id -H "Authorization: Bearer " -o 200mb_copy.file # See that the two files are identical I am at a loss. What can I do to solve this issue?

Aha. Rant Ende

Should I donate sperm?

Honestly? Yeah, go for it. It really doesn’t matter why or what criteria someone uses to select a donor, you’re doing something nice. For a couple that can’t conceive because of sperm issues (whatever those issues might be), having a variety of anonymous donors to pick from empowers them in a way that is really unique. Think about the whole of human history where infertility was insurmountable without an outsider being directly involved in an intimate way. There’s nothing wrong with that, but it isn’t for everyone. Medical assistance gives freedom and independence of choice way beyond what used to be possible. So, yeah, if you don’t have some major genetic problems, donate.

California OnlyFans Model Sentenced After Client Dies During Fatal BDSM Encounter

unlucky I don’t think it’s unlucky just stupid. In bdsm we have something called RACK (risk aware consensual kink) where before a scene or activity you have to study risks, anatomy, and physiology as deeply as you can and then do negotiations with your partner where you discuss all the risks and establish safe words and alternative non-verbal cues, and everything that could go wrong and the protocol that will be followed if it does go wrong, while changing things and substituting some aspects with others that would achieve the same goal but more safely. You also generally don’t participate in extreme activities with a new partner especially if someone is inexperienced.

Got banned for telling people that wishing public figures to "kys" is mentally unhealthy

Eh. You walked into a community who’re being stomped by a government boot and trying to cope with the injustice however they can. You tell em its not healthy to wish for the boot owner to die, or that it’s a bad look. And, like, you may be right, but you can see how neither is in their top 10 problems right now. If someone is going through a major external crisis, nitpicking about their behaviour isn’t gonna garner you much sympathy.

Poop!

Nurse here. I’ve wiped a cumulative mile or two of stranger ass crack, so
I know a thing or two about poop. The answer is: If everything’s working normally, your bowels will reabsorb water until it becomes solid. They’re really good at reabsorbing water. If everything’s working normally. If you’ve got the Hershe’s squirts, things are not working normally. So
you’ll probably just shit your pants. *snaps glove* Now spread em.

Coastal land shifts reveal faster local sea level rise than expected

For almost a century, researchers have known that vertical land motion—the lifting and sinking of the ground—affects sea level locally. As the ground sinks, the sea level rises relative to the land. Scientists also assumed this process generally occurred at a steady rate over time. But a research team that includes Thomas Wahl, a UCF researcher and associate professor in the Department of Civil, Environmental and Construction Engineering, has found that ground subsidence has undergone phases of variable change, creating significant implications for coastal communities. "ALL POWER TO THE WORKING PEOPLE!" — 155 years of the "Internationale" — the anthem that changed the world

Exactly 155 years ago, in June 1871, right on the still-smoking barricades of the Paris Commune, the poet and communist Eugùne Pottier wrote the poem “L’Internationale”. The Commune fell. Thousands of its defenders were shot. But the lines survived. Pottier hid the manuscript, and in 1887 published it in the collection “Revolutionary Songs”. A year later, the French composer Pierre Degeyter set it to music — and the anthem began its journey around the planet. The song was translated into dozens of languages. It became the anthem of the Second International. It was sung at May Day rallies, underground meetings, and demonstrations — in Germany, England, Italy, China, Latin America — everywhere where workers rose up against oppression. The anthem sounded in the trenches of the First World War, on the barricades of the Spanish Civil War, and in concentration camps. In the 1920s, it was such a powerful symbol that many governments banned it under threat of imprisonment. “This song is translated into all European, and not only European languages
Wherever a conscious worker goes, wherever fate takes him, no matter how alien he feels — without language, without acquaintances, far from his homeland — he can find comrades and friends to the familiar tune of the ‘Internationale’.” — V. I. Lenin In Russia, the “Internationale” first sounded in 1902, in the translation by Arkady Kotz. This translation became a classic: "The whole world of violence we will destroy To the foundations, and then We will build our new world, Who was nothing will become everything!" After the October Revolution of 1917, it immediately became the anthem of the new power. "And in Smolny — the crowd, spreading its chest, covered with a song of fireworks of information. For the first time instead of: — and it will be
 — they sang: — and this is our last
" — Mayakovsky, from the poem “It’s Good” In January 1918, the All-Russian Central Executive Committee (VTsIK) approved the “Internationale” as the state anthem of the RSFSR, and later of the USSR. It was sung at the first subbotniks, on Red Square, at Congresses of Soviets. It sounded at the opening of the Dnieper Hydroelectric Station, in the factories of Magnitogorsk, at campfires of Pioneer camps. Soldiers marched into battle with it in 1941. The Germans listened to its lines with horror, coming from the ruins of the Brest Fortress, the catacombs of Adzhimushkay and Odessa. Workers sang it in the workshops of evacuated factories. In 1944, the new anthem of the USSR became Alexandrov’s music with Mikhalkov’s lyrics — but the “Internationale” did not fade into the background. It remained the anthem of the Communist Party. It was sung at party congresses, at May Day and November 7th demonstrations. For millions of Soviet people, it was not just a song — but an oath. “The ‘Internationale’ is the anthem of the international solidarity of the proletariat. It expresses the truth that the liberation of working people can only be the work of the working people themselves. As long as capitalism exists, the ‘Internationale’ will sound as a call to the last, decisive battle.” — V. I. Lenin, from “On the ‘Internationale’” (1913) and various speeches But at rallies in Nepal, at protests in Chile, at demonstrations and during strikes in Europe and America — its melody arises again and again. And its call — “Rise up, damned!” — remains as relevant as ever. As long as there is inequality, exploitation, and injustice. As long as someone’s labor is devalued, and someone else’s greed becomes law.

Video - “The U.S. government knows that Cuba is not a threat”

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.ml/post/48568140 Duration - 0:55 In recent days, the Cuban United Nations Association (ACNU) warned of the humanitarian consequences of a possible U.S. military attack. ACNU President Norma Goicochea said that “the U.S. government knows
Cuba is not an extraordinary threat” to the United States or any other country. She also warned that a military intervention would have devastating consequences for civilians, including children, women and the elderly. “Cubans have the right to be happy. We have the right to live in peace. Ultimately, we have the right to live.”

Where humpbacks gather near Tokyo's remote islands could reshape whale watching and conservation

Humpback whales are one of the most popular species for whale watching. Since they are active close to the water’s surface, groups of whale watchers can often see them breaching and diving during breeding periods. One popular whale watching destination is the Ogasawara Islands—also known as the Bonin Islands—a remote archipelago about 1,000 kilometers south of Tokyo. Nederlandse claim tegen gameplatform Steam: 'Pc-gamers betaalden te veel'

Vind Steam altijd lastig.

Brit workers waste nearly six hours a week 'botsitting'

Thank you, this is what I have been trying to tell people, I am an IT guy at a financial services company, the entire company is currently AI pilled, and I hate it. Replacing knowledge and skills with a statistics based chatbot is insane. The only times I use AI is like a dynamic manual, and that is only if I couldn’t find the information through a normal googling. I have tried to use AI to write code for me, and it terrified me, it was so easy, but I lost control and understanding of the code, and I hate that. I want to be able to glance at the code of a script I have developed and be able to remember how it works, and I don’t get that with AI. A skilled employee with knowledge of the code/system is far, far more valuable than a statistics based chatbot.
