How AI can help make cities work better for residents

In recent decades, cities have become increasingly adept at amassing all sorts of data. But that data can have limited impact when government officials are unable to communicate, let alone analyze or put to use, all the information they have access to. This dynamic has always bothered Sarah Williams, a professor of urban planning and technology at MIT. “We do a lot of spatial and data analytics. We sit on academic papers and research that could have a huge impact on the way we plan and design our cities,” she says of her profession. “It wasn’t getting communicated.” Shortly after joining MIT in 2012, Williams created the Civic Data Design Lab to bridge that divide. Over the years, she and her colleagues have pushed the narrative and expository bounds of urban planning data using the latest technologies available—making numbers vivid and accessible through human stories and striking graphics. One project she was involved in, on rates of incarceration in New York City by neighborhood, is now in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Williams’s other projects have tracked the spread and impact of air pollution in Beijing using air quality monitors and mapped the daily commutes of Nairobi residents using geographic information systems. Cities should be transparent in how they’re using AI and what its limitations are. In doing so, they have an opportunity to model more ethical and responsive ways of using this technology. In recent years, as AI became more accessible, Williams was intrigued by what it could reveal about cities. “I really started thinking, ‘What are the implications for urban planning?’” she says. These tools have the potential to organize and illustrate vast amounts of data instantaneously. But having more information also increases the risks of misinformation and manipulation. “I wanted to help guide cities in thinking about the positives and negatives of these tools,” she says. In 2024, that inquiry led to a collaboration with the city of Boston, which was exploring how and whether to apply AI in various government functions through its Office of Emerging Technology. Over the course of the year, Williams and her team followed along as Boston experimented with several new applications for AI in government and gathered feedback at community meetings. On the basis of these findings, Williams and the Civic Data Design Lab published the Generative AI Playbook for Civic Engagement in the spring. It’s a publicly available document that helps city governments take advantage of AI’s capabilities and navigate its ­attendant risks. This kind of guidance is especially important as the federal government takes an increasingly laissez-faire approach to AI regulation. “That gray zone is where nonprofits and academia can create research to help guide states and private institutions,” Williams says. The lab’s playbook and academic papers touch on a wide range of emerging applications, from virtual assistants for Boston’s procurement division to optimization of traffic signals to chatbots for the 311 nonemergency services hotline. But Williams’s primary focus is how to use this technology for civic engagement. AI could help make the membrane between the government and the public more porous, allowing each side to understand the other a little better. Right now, civic engagement is mostly limited to “social media, websites, and community meetings,” she says. “If we can create more tools to help close that gap, that’s really important.” One of Boston’s AI-powered experiments moves in that direction. The city used a large language model to summarize every vote of the Boston City Council for the past 16 years, creating simple and straightforward descriptions of each measure. This easily searchable database “will help you find what you’re looking for a lot more quickly,” says Michael Lawrence Evans, head of the Office of Emerging Technology. A quick search for “housing” shows the city council’s recent actions to create a new housing accelerator fund and to expand the capacity of migrant shelters. Though not every summary has been double-checked by a human, the tool’s accuracy was confirmed through “a really robust evaluation,” Evans says. AI tools may also help governments understand the needs and desires of residents. The community is “already inputting a lot of its knowledge” through community meetings, public surveys, 311 tickets, and other channels, Williams says. Boston, for instance, recorded nearly 300,000 311 requests in 2024 (most were complaints related to parking). New York City recorded 35 million 311 contacts in 2023. It can be difficult for government workers to spot trends in all that noise. “Now they have a more structured way to analyze that data that didn’t really exist before,” she says. AI can help paint a clearer picture of how these sorts of resident complaints are distributed geographically. At a community meeting in Boston last year, city staff used generative AI to instantly produce a map of pothole complaints from the previous month. AI also has the potential to illuminate more abstract data on residents’ desires. One mechanism Williams cites in her research is Polis, an open-source polling platform used by several national governments around the world and a handful of cities and media companies in the US. A recent update allows poll hosts to categorize and summarize responses using AI. It’s something of an experiment in how AI can help facilitate direct democracy—an issue that tool creator Colin Megill has worked on with both OpenAI and Anthropic. But even as Megill explores these frontiers, he is proceeding cautiously. The goal is to “enhance human agency,” he says, and to avoid “manipulation” at all costs: “You want to give the model very specific and discrete tasks that augment human authors but don’t replace them.” Misinformation is another concern as local governments figure out how best to work with AI. Though they’re increasingly common, 311 chatbots have a mixed record on this front. New York City’s chatbot made headlines last year for providing inaccurate and, at times, bizarre information. When an Associated Press reporter asked if it was legal for a restaurant to serve cheese that had been nibbled on by a rat, the chatbot responded, “Yes, you can still serve the cheese to customers if it has rat bites.” (The New York chatbot appears to have improved since then. When asked by this reporter, it responded firmly in the negative to the nibbling rat question.) These AI mishaps can reduce trust in government—precisely the opposite of the outcome that Williams is pursuing in her work. “Currently, we don’t have a lot of trust in AI systems,” she says. “That’s why having that human facilitator is really important.” Cities should be transparent in how they’re using AI and what its limitations are, she says. In doing so, they have an opportunity to model more ethical and responsive ways of using this technology. Next on Williams’s agenda is exploring how cities can develop their own AI systems rather than relying on tech giants, which often have a different set of priorities. This technology could be open-source; not only would communities be able to better understand the data they produce, but they would own it. “One of the biggest criticisms of AI right now is that the people who are doing the labor are not paid for the work that they do [to train the systems],” she says. “I’m super excited about how communities can own their large language models. Mario Kart World is the perfect Switch 2 launch game

All sequels have to live up to their predecessors in some form, but few have as daunting a task as Mario Kart World. It’s a follow-up to the best-selling game across Nintendo’s last two console generations, and a game that eventually doubled in size thanks to an ambitious array of downloadable add-ons. So instead of following Mario Kart 8 with another release that simply adds more, Nintendo shifted in a slightly different direction. Mario Kart World is still Mario Kart; it has a daunting Rainbow Road to speed across and frustrating blue shells to steal victories away from you. But it also introduces an open-world structure that makes the game feel larger and more cohesive. This makes it the ideal game to show off what the Switch 2 is capable of at launch. Dr. GGamer here is someone who i realize genuinely suffered and wants to help people by giving away the relevant knowledge from the other side of the academical gates. former incel and gamer addict turnt public educator. i downloaded all of his videos and listen to them in a playlist when i feel like i’m stuck and wanna figure out what bothers me in life. then i pick out that video and make notes of the always well-articulated (albeit less sympathically so) key-takeaways of each situation. here are my notes from the video for executive dysfunction specific to screen addicts/gamers. these are my key take-aways with some anecdotes from my point of view, if you have more take-aways- hey i’ll always read & reply to your comments and posts in c/screen_addiction. blood flow to hippocampus lessens, divergent (open-ended) problems become near impossible to break down since that’s not what we were doing while we gamed; convergent (close-ended) problems means everything spelled out in-game or we’d get frustrated and quit that game. blood flow to amygdala lessens, negative emotions are literally muted. un-muting (leaving the screen/game) un-mutes us emotionally only to hear an overwhelming queue of negative-emotions which we lost track of how to deal with orderly… a societally ignored or mocked feedbackloop of increased perceived need to game for the real benefit of actually muting negative emotions that do pile up: this ultimately acts like an XP-debuff and life goes on hardmode. serotonin aversion, no sense of accomplishment ever with lower serotonin. more screen & games -> less serotonin in every part of life. feels like hollowing out all meaning until a gnawing hole forms in the bottom of my stomach to right below my chest, in my own words for the daily experience. dopamine dependency, the dopamine-hits we’re all struggling with. visual flares and audio queues that induce catharsis under the guise of being just for the mere kinaesthesic sensation of weight in a cyberspace.

tl;dr: You download files from a server you pay to access. Faster and more secure (assuming you trust the server host). I use Eweka and NZBGeek as my indexer. If you don’t have access to fancy private torrent networks then this is a much less painful experience than having to navigate torrent sites these days. Combine with *aar and life is pretty sweet.

How do I go about using/having printed purchased files off Etsy? How safe is it?

I’m looking into 3D-printing some props for a cosplay and stumbled upon a pretty handy listing on Etsy (if I’m not allowed to post the link, I’ll edit it out). Now, I’m a complete beginner to 3D printing and know barely anything, so I’ve got a couple of questions. How safe is it to buy files off Etsy? Apparently, STL files are a little too large to be uploaded to Etsy, so upon making the purchase I’d get sent a txt file that includes a download link to the required files. Is that trustworthy? Are there any file types that I should steer clear off for commercial 3D printing places? I’ve got a place to go in my city, I think, but I’m not sure if there are any limitations to which file types can be printed at all. How likely is it that the arm prop won’t fit? The listing does not specify if there are different sizes, and I’m not sure if they are even needed in the first place. In case it wouldn’t fit out of the box, how difficult is it to scale the file to fit my arm proper? How expensive would printing be? Probably hard to answer unless I know where I’m going and what they are charging, but I’d imagine the cost of material is probably not too high, right? I think the seller also has the same files over on Cults 3D. Would buying there be preferable to Etsy for any reason (apart from pricing)? That should be it. I hope my post is an ok fit for here - I’ll post somewhere else if it isn’t. Thank you guys in advance!

[Discussion] Flatpaks, ram/disk usage and compression

Exactly what I’m talking about. It reminds me of the time microsoft introduced memory compression to compensate for every application bringing it’s own DLLs But I still think flatpak is superior to windows way of doing things because it actually has dependency management. I kinda like the idea of having multiple versions of the same library but I wish they did not come in big bundles (runtimes), but instead, came in small 1-2MB pieces. download random binaries from non-trusted distributors that contain a copy of every library that software needs to run This is overexaggeration. Flatpak, unlike places windows users get software from, is moderated, and flatpak (although chunky) has shared dependencies

Trustworthy Tableau Crack

I’m trying to find a cracked version of Tableau Desktop, but none of the DDL sites I looked at in the megathread had it. 1337x has some older versions, but I’m not sure if I trust them. I had downloaded and installed the 2020.1.3 release on 1337x by FTUApps, but apparently they’re unsafe since they released an infected crack a couple years ago. Is that specific release, dated two years before that announcement, safe? I only installed the application itself without implementing the crack file before seeing the announcement, but I did of course have to run it as admin, so I imagine I’m safe if potential malware is only in the crack file but infected if it’s in the installer. Either way, what’s the most recent crack of Tableau that can be trusted?

Okay, so first off, the troublemaker responsible for publishing this is somebody called Bodo Hechelhammer, whose Wikipedia article says that he ‘confirmed for the first time on behalf of the BND that the Nazi war criminal Walther Rauff was a BND source from 1958 to 1962 and published all of the BND documents’, and has three citations to back that up. Sound pretty exciting? It gets even better: from 1956 to 1968 the president of the BND was none other than Reinhard…fucking…Gehlen…and if you don’t know the significance of that, read Christopher Simpson’s Blowback (specifically ch. 5): According to Cox, the Gehlen Organization was the primary source of intelligence that claimed that “the Soviets were about to attack [West] Germany. . . . [That was] the biggest bunch of baloney then, and it is still a bunch of baloney today.” Basically, a war hawk and former Axis official who repeatedly tried to bullshit people into starting a sequel to Operation Barbarossa (and some have gone so far as to blame him for the Cold War). As Hechelhammer’s paper itself says: Furthermore, then BND President Reinhard Gehlen was personally interested in the developments in Cuba. In the late fifties, in light of the growing threat Cuba represented to the United States, and again in 1960/61, he reportedly held the opinion that the United States should respond with a preemptive military attack. His advice for the United States was „to swiftly annex this dangerous communist stronghold that serves also as perfect platform for Latin America‘s communist infiltration […]“ Gehlen dismissed concerns that a US military action against Cuba might trigger a third Word War. And, just to top off this game of telephone, I couldn’t find any corroborating sources about the Republic of Cuba knowingly recruiting Ernst-Wilhelm Springer, Otto Ernst Remer, or anybody else who worked for the Schutzstaffel, which means that we probably have no option but to take the BND’s word for this. There are some viruses that have targeted Linux, but they’re rare compared to other platforms and their ability to spread is relatively low. One of the main reasons is just down to how software tends to be installed on each platform. Viruses have an easier time spreading on Windows or OSX where users are more accustomed to downloading an executable and running it. Once there’s a malicious running process, it has a comparatively high chance to spread because it can attempt to escalate its privileges either by exploiting a bug or socially engineering the user to click through a privilege escalation prompt. That entire workflow is practically nonexistent on Linux, users just don’t tend to download and execute random binaries. Instead most Linux software gets delivered in one of these ways, each of which has impediments that reduce the chance a virus could spread: through an OS repo; it would be difficult for a malicious actor to get a virus through the release process and into a trusted repo through a public source like Github; again it would be difficult for a malicious actor to get a virus into public source code without someone noticing through a container image from an image library like DockerHub; I believe a malicious container would be sandboxed, making it hard if not impossible for that container to take over the host system through an application image like a snap, flatpak or appimage; again, I believe these run in their own sandbox from which they would have difficulty breaking out There are some exceptions, for example some companies like Hashicorp will distribute their stuff as precompiled binaries. Alright, I'm gonna "take one for the team" -- what is with the "downvote-happy" users lately?

I expected this to be “another one of those” but actually from what my instance has about you, you were indeed correct. Gaming distros with exclusive features lmao. IMO that’s some of the gamer logic bleeding over in the Linux side, now that Linux gaming is taking off. They’ll do anything including install dubious Linux distros barely hanging together with duct tape for a perceived extra 2 FPS. Download software exclusively distributed on Discord? Hell yeah. I’m sure at least one of them boots with mitigations=off and it’s not clearly indicated that it does. We’re seeing the same thing on the Windows side with modified Windows ISOs like the whole AtlasOS, that rightfully made some security experts sound the alarm. Some did things like completely strip off the updates, antivirus and firewall. Unless your system is exclusively running Steam and firewalled off the network, this is a certified bad idea. I’d probably trust Nobara because the guy clearly knows his shit, but some of them really are just some other guy’s riced up Arch snapshot. They may give the impression everything just works at first but I’ve definitely seen examples of it falling apart. Even bigger distros like Pop_OS! had major snafus like the whole Steam uninstalls your DE thing, and Manjaro still fucks up something basic every now and then. I tried some of them in a VM and they didn’t even install or boot correctly. Oh my fault that one only works for NVIDIA graphics cards not AMD, my bad. It’s not worth arguing, it’s a user base with vastly different goals than I do, just let them have their Bedrock Linux completely blow up in multi package manager hell and soon enough they’ll come running for a saner more reliable distro.
