The number of working days lost to strike action plummeted by almost two thirds during Labour’s first year in power. This is according to new analysis from the GMB union. The 12 months leading up to July 2024, when Labour won power, saw 1,406,000 working days of strikes. During the year following Labour’s win, there were 559,000, a huge drop of more than 60%. The GMB will discuss the figures, which come from analysis of Office of National Statistics data, at its annual congress in Blackpool. Lifting the wages of millions of low paid workers and improvements to employment rights, such as day one sick pay, help explain the drop, the union said. Ross Holden, GMB head of research and policy, said: Workers go on strike when work doesn’t pay and bad bosses don’t listen. It’s no wonder we saw the biggest strike disruption in decades under the Tories who took the side of bad bosses and left our economy in chaos. This drop in strike days shows that employers have nothing to fear in Labour’s plan to Make Work Pay. It must be delivered in full. While Democratic lawmakers are among those connecting the arrival of screwworm—a flesh-eating bug that feeds off the living tissue of warm-blooded animals and had been eradicated in the US in 1966—to cuts by President Donald Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) that specifically targeted screwworm monitoring programs, Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins doubled down on claims that an “open border policy” under the Biden administration was to blame. “This does trace back to the last administration and the open border policy, and the movement of millions of people and their animals up from South America through Central America,” said Rollins with certainty on Monday. As David Dayen explained at The American Prospect Tuesday, former President Joe Biden placed a ban on bison, horse, and cattle imports from Mexico in 2024, which Trump lifted in February 2025. At the same time, DOGE, under the leadership of Trump megadonor and tech billionaire Elon Musk, cut screwworm monitoring efforts and animal disease control and prevention efforts, slashing 1,300 employees from USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. Rollins did reinstate the live import ban last May as screwworm cases were rising in Mexico and began funding prevention programs in Texas. But a $600 million facility for breeding sterile screwworm flies—a key component of successful eradication efforts—is not scheduled to be completed until late next year, and sterile flies that have been dispersed from a facility that opened in February at Moore Air Force Base in South Texas only amount to “about one one-hundredth of what it would take each week to eradicate the pest,” Dayen wrote. He also noted that Rollins has attempted to blame Biden—who has not been in office since January 2025—despite the fact that the total average lifespan of a screwworm fly is 21 days. “The more likely explanation is that an administration with an antipathy to government ignored government’s purpose until it was too late,” wrote Dayen. The USDA established a 12-mile quarantine area around the affected area last week when the case was detected in South Texas, but on Monday the agency said another case had been found in Gillespie County, over 100 miles from where the initial case was reported. A dog was also found to be infested in Lea County, New Mexico, more than 400 miles away. The parasite is not expected to affect food safety, as it feeds on living tissue, but the outbreak raises concerns about rising beef prices, which are already high due to the low volume of cattle in the US. The high prices of fertilizer and fuel due to the war in Iran, and of equipment and repairs due to Trump’s tariff policy, have also put a strain on the cattle industry. “The cattle producer in the US has already been under extreme financial stress,” Joe Maxwell, president of Farm Action Fund and a farmer in Missouri, told The American Prospect. “This is serious, the screwworm outbreak. But it’s even more serious because of the financial position they were already under.” In response to Rollins’ claims, Sen. 10m ago The Guardian - Iran has targeted the US fifth fleet in Bahrain with drones, in response to the attacks on the south of the country, Iranian state media is reporting. Iran made a similar statement on Wednesday, after the US launched its first round of strikes on the country, with claims that American bases in the region, and the fifth fleet in Bahrain, had been targeted with drones. The US later said that none of the drones or missiles launched by Iran has hit their targets.
So I’m in bath and notice that prior to HRT, when laying sideways, my hips would fully be under water. But now they don’t. I started it only 1 year and 2 mo ago (hips probably sadly fused already since I’m 28). And now part of hip is above water… Yay! But also, dangit. The bath’s filled to the brim and I love being fully submerged from neck down :(

I know plenty of people (including myself!) who aren’t platonic ideals of their political affinities… but neither are they best described as liberals (much less turbolibs).

Linked is the laptop I bought today off amazon. It’s got pretty good reviews and it’s a solid upgrade from this ddr3 mechanical hdd msi I’ve been using since 2013. What spurred on the purchase is that I got a bsod a couple weeks back, explorer keeps crashing, and the drive for the last 3 days has been running at 100% nonstop. I do plan on either doing something with linux mint or perhaps downgrading to windows 10 (since I have an actual copy of it at home). Hope this works out! I really, really, needed an upgrade badly.

More seriously, I do agree that things were more chill between the USSR collapsed and before things kicked off in the Balkans. Good choice. I’ve been using mine for much longer and have converted a few visitors as well. Now, for maximum comfort during the evacuation process, the next step is a full squat platform (lilipad good, squatty potty bad). The advantages of the platform are subtle but measurable. Ideally you want one that sits below the knobs of the bidet, so it is more likely you’ll want to DIY.
