By Wyatt Reed and Max Blumenthal – Feb 1, 2026 Western officials seized on a dubious death toll of 30,000 protesters to escalate against Iran. The number originates with a single, clearly compromised source. But a zealously pro-war Guardian reporter is doing her best to legitimize it. The claim of “30,000 killed” during two days of protests and rioting across Iran appears to be based largely on a single anonymous source, who admitted extrapolating that figure by assuming without evidence that “officially registered deaths related to the crackdown likely represent less than 10% of the real number of fatalities.” That quote was attributed by The Guardian to an alleged doctor whose real name the newspaper refused to publish, but whose identity it claimed to have verified. Originating in TIME Magazine on January 25th, the dubious “30,000” claim was quickly amplified by The Guardian, a key voice of left-liberal London respectability. From there, European officials seized on the death toll to justify designating Iran’s IRGC as a terrorist organization – essentially green-lighting another US-Israeli military assault on Iran. The author of The Guardian’s article is a former fashion blogger named Deepa Parent, who has become the paper’s go-to source for Iran war propaganda, churning out over a dozen pieces for The Guardian driving the regime change narrative against the Islamic Republic since violent riots engulfed the country on January 8 and 9. Parent has emerged as the face of The Guardian’s attacks on Iran despite having no apparent ties to the country and not appearing to speak its language. Farsi is not listed among the half-dozen languages in which she claims to be bilingual or speak in some functional professional capacity. Before adopting the surname Parent around 2019, The Guardian’s go-to Iran reporter wrote under the name Deepa Kalukuri. Her journalistic output was largely limited to fashion reviews in Indian media. A typical piece published in India’s Just For Women magazine in 2016 was headlined: “Samantha Is Setting Some Serious Fashion Goals! Check Them Out!” “What’s better than a Little Black Dress for a weekend party? Samantha pairs her LBD with these killer stilettos! We are loving it!!! Have a fashionable weekend!!!” Elsewhere, in an article informing Indian housewives that “understanding stocks is not [as] difficult as the news shows” suggested, she explained that investing was actually quite simple: “like a playing a video game but only your favorite batman is replaced with that stock broker who gives you the right advice to invest at the end of the bell.” Published by The Guardian, sponsored by Omidyar When the “Women, Life, Freedom” protests kicked off in September 2022 following the death of a young woman in Iranian custody, the improbable Parent suddenly materialized as The Guardian’s point woman on civic unrest in a nation with which she had no apparent professional or personal experience. Much of Parent’s work at The Guardian’s so-called “Rights and Freedom” section has been funded by an NGO called Humanity United, which was founded by tech billionaire Pierre Omidyar and his wife, Pam. As The Grayzone reported, Omidyar has partnered with US intelligence cutouts like USAID and the National Endowment for Democracy to promote regime change from Ukraine to the Philippines, while advancing various “counter-disinformation” efforts aimed at suppressing anti-establishment viewpoints. A channel for pro-war regime change activists in TehranAs the violence in Iran continues to dominate the headlines, Parent has all but admitted to functioning as a channel for foreign-backed regime change activists inside Iran. On January 30, she took to Twitter/X to announce that she’d received “permission” to publicize a message from a “student” in Tehran who declared: “We are all getting ready to take to the streets and seize important centers as soon as America attacks.” Back in 2025, after Iran and Israel reached a ceasefire following a 12 day-long war initiated by Israel, Parent announced that she had received permission from another unnamed source to share “a first message and reaction” from Tehran. The source lamented that Israel’s war on Iran had ended: “This is the worst thing they can do. If they do this, the Islamic Republic will make life hell for the people of Iran.” “We don’t need to convince anyone” with actual evidenceAs critical observers began to suggest the 30,000 death toll was likely inflated, Parent took to social media to declare that despite being a journalist, she was under no obligation to prove the claims she had printed. The only thing that mattered, she insisted, was that “decision makers” were moved to take action. “We don’t need to convince anyone about the massacre the IR [Islamic Republic] has carried out on innocent civilians in Iran,” she wrote, since, “decision makers don’t see trolls’ tweets, they see verified accounts and reports.” The Guardian’s Parent therefore admitted her output was aimed at manipulating Western government officials, not informing the actual people who elect them. Just a day later, however, Parent apparently had a change of heart, and produced an “anonymous doctor” who she claimed had confirmed the figure after all. This person, who Parent referred to by the pseudonym “Dr Ahmadi,” had somehow “assembled a network of more than 80 medical professionals across 12 of Iran’s 31 provinces to share observations and data,” she insisted. Lo and behold, the number calculated through this murky network coincided perfectly with the guesstimate put forward by an Iranian monarchist operative in Germany who had been the lone source for the figure of 30,000 dead. Cubans Denounce the Presence of the US Chargé D’Affaires After Interventionist Action **The ‘big lie’**Since TIME Magazine published its January 25 article asserting without clear evidence that Iran killed 30,000 protesters in two days, the figure has become an article of faith among regime change activists and their journalistic backers. Co-authored by a Persian contributor to the Times of Israel, Kay Armin Serjoie, the TIME article’s dubious data reverberated throughout corporate media. TIME claimed to have received this number from “two senior officials of [Iran’s] Ministry of Health.” Though the outlet admitted it could not verify the figure, TIME claimed to have confirmed the death toll by insisting it “roughly aligns” with a count prepared by a German eye surgeon named Amir Parasta. TIME did not inform its readers, however, that Amir Parasta was a hopelessly compromised source. Indeed, Parasta is a close associate of and lobbyist for the self-described “Crown Prince” Reza Pahlavi – the son of Iran’s deposed Shah. Based in Potomac, Maryland, Pahlavi urged Iranians to carry out violence across their country this January. When that campaign failed, he clamored for “anyone” to launch a military assault on the country he left as a young boy with millions of dollars in stolen wealth. Parasta openly serves as an advisor to NUFDI, the main US-based lobbying group working to realize Pahlavi’s dream of re-establishing himself and his family as Iran’s monarchs. For its part, the Iranian government has dismissed the 30,000 figure as a “Hitler-style big lie,” framing the narrative of ‘mass murder’ in Iran as part of a US and Israeli-led campaign to manufacture consent for regime change. In much of the Western world, the ‘big lie’ appears to be working as intended. On January 28th, as the massive new purported death toll was being dutifully disseminated by mainstream media, a European outlet wrote that it had been informed that the revised body count had been enough to convince Italy and Spain to finally agree to sanction Iran’s IRGC. “The brutality of what we see has made ministers and capitals reconsider their positions,” an anonymous senior European diplomat reportedly told Euro News. The official described the decision by Italy and Spain – the last two major holdouts on EU sanctions against the IRGC – as “an important signal towards the Iranian government and an expression of support for the Iranian diaspora,” who the diplomat noted “have called for this for a long time.” As The Grayzone has reported, mainstream outlets have relied virtually exclusively on Iranian diaspora groups closely tied to the US government for the ever-growing death toll they attribute to Tehran. Parent was no different, frequently citing one of the organizations The Grayzone profiled, which operates under the name “Human Rights Activists in Iran.” The group receives extensive funding from the National Endowment for Democracy, a CIA cutout created under the Reagan Administration to distance Washington’s covert regime change efforts from discredited US intelligence agencies. **The Guardian’s Parent relies on State Dept-funded “fact checker”**Parent relied on a similar source for her claim that Iran had killed “30,000” citizens during the unrest in January, when she claimed The Guardian had obtained photographs showing “bodies with close-range gunshot wounds to the head that had been transferred from hospital morgues while still attached to catheters, nasogastric tubes or endotracheal tubes.” Though Parent freely acknowledged The Guardian had “not independently verified the photographs,” she nevertheless claimed they had been “verified by [an] Iranian factchecking organisation” known as “Factnameh.” By its own admission, however, Factnameh is not Iranian. On its website, Factnameh describes itself as a subsidiary of “ASL19, a private company registered in Toronto, Canada.” More importantly, Factnameh is not actually a neutral factchecking organization, but instead another node in the vast network of US government-sponsored entities seeking to depose the government in Iran. Public records show that between 2022 and 2023 alone, ASL19 received nearly $2.9 million from the US State Department. While Parent launders her regime change advocacy behind The Guardian’s reputation, she has been more unguarded about her views on social media. Challenged on Twitter/X on whether Iranians who disagree with their government actually want to be bombed by Israel, she fired back: “They prefer freedom from the Islamic Republic & they were being killed by the regime’s forces already.” (The Grayzone) From Orinoco Tribune – News and opinion pieces about Venezuela and beyond via This RSS Feed.
Here’s a good aggregation of sources, many of the mainstream western press: https://worldaffairs.blog/2019/06/02/tiananmen-square-massacre-facts-fiction-and-propaganda/ some of the lib-friendly sources used: https://www.cjr.org/behind_the_news/the_myth_of_tiananmen.php https://www.cbsnews.com/news/there-was-no-tiananmen-square-massacre/ https://www.nytimes.com/1989/06/13/world/turmoil-china-tiananmen-crackdown-student-s-account-questioned-major-points.html
Agitprop repost from the massive china thread done two months or so ago: wikileaks published a private diplomatic cable stating that no one was killed in the square itself, although a smaller number of people did die in clashes elsewhere in Beijing, consistent with China’s own official account. (Here’s a Telegraph article on the cables). a spanish film crew was in the square all night and filmed people peacefully leaving the square in the early morning, singing the Internationale, here’s footage of a Hong Kong news report that includes the spanish film crew footage, which never appears in western reporting). one of the main organizers of the protest, Hou Dejian, states that no one died in the square and calls out other organizers for lying I Interview where Hou Dejian, a Taiwanese national and one of the leaders of the Tiananmen protests, says he was in the square all night and saw no one killed here is a twitter thread covering testimony by various organizers, including Hou Dejian). Numerous western media sources have stated that no massacre occurred in the square. (This article links to multiple western sources, including James Miles, attesting that no one died in the square.). various western massacre reports cite wildly different death figures, usually with little or no justification for the number. An attempt to collect all the names of the massacre victims ended early when they only found 155. CIA and NED goons were known to be present in Beijing and involved in the protests. (Here is an article from the Vancouver Sun in 1992, showing western intelligence involvement was known in the west decades ago). during most of the protest, protesters were calling for a return to stricter communism, not for liberal market reforms. These were Marxists. Their signs showed Marxist figures and slogans. (This article shows some images of the protesters displaying Marxist slogans and iconography and discusses it a bit — careful linking this site though, some of the articles are pretty dumb). tank man: the tanks in the video are leaving the square (you can see this in the uncropped footage) and it is broad daylight, whereas the main violence occurred at night. the first violence was against troops, not civilians. On June 2, 1989, two days before the June 4 incident when the main violence occurred, multiple unarmed Chinese troops were burned alive and their corpses hung from nooses in public. ((CW: gore) here is a thread of photos showing dead and wounded troops, some being rescued by civilians. Multiple men were burned to death, others were beaten. Some protesters stole guns from the army and can be seen brandishing them.). the violence against troops was uncharacteristic of the previous tone of interactions between troops and protesters in the preceding weeks. Troops and protesters had peacefully coexisted, singing songs and sharing food together. (Here’s an article that goes into it a bit)
By Ed Newman – Feb 1, 2026 “Murderer, terrorist, Down with the blockade”: Women in Camagüey denounce US Chargé d’Affaires Mike Hammer. A group of Cuban women in the city of Camagüey denounced the presence of the United States Chargé d’Affaires on the island, Mike Hammer, on Saturday, amid the announcement of new measures against Havana by Donald Trump that seek to tighten the blockade and cut off fuel supplies to the Caribbean island. Hours earlier, the US official was confronted by citizens outside a church in the city of Trinidad. Mike Hammer’s Interference Activities Since arriving in Cuba in November 2024 as U.S. Chargé d’Affaires, Mike Hammer has been linked to actions that violate the principles of diplomacy and international conventions governing relations between states. Hammer’s conduct in Cuba has been marked by proselytizing, confrontation, and open support for counterrevolutionary sectors, both on and off the island. Throughout his time on the island, the U.S. official has disregarded the norms established in the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations (1961) and Article 41 of the Charter of the United Nations, which require diplomatic representatives not to interfere in the internal affairs of the host country. The U.S. diplomat’s agenda on the island has consisted of holding meetings with counterrevolutionary figures, avoiding contact with Cuban authorities, even during visits to provinces where diplomatic protocol requires coordination with local governments. Another point on his agenda is to promote division, attempting to pit Cubans born before and after 1959 against each other in an effort to delegitimize revolutionary history. Mike Hammer has defied calls from the Cuban Foreign Ministry for his interventionist actions. Defender of the hostile policy toward Cuba The actions of the US diplomat have made it clear that he is not interested in building bridges, but rather in deepening his government’s hostile policy. In this regard, he has defended the blockade against the island, despite the UN’s annual condemnation of it as a violation of international law. Furthermore, he has denied any interest in negotiating with the Cuban government, even on migration issues, prioritizing instead support for individuals funded by his government to promote the desired “regime change” on the island. Links to Extremist Groups He has also maintained his alignment with extremist groups by accepting the title of “Ambassador of the Exile” bestowed by Miami-based groups, thus legitimizing those who advocate for intervention in Cuba. From Blockade to Asphyxiation: the US War on Cuba Enters Its Most Brutal Phase His meeting with James Cason, known for his aggressive role during the U.S. mission in Havana (2002-2005), which sought to destabilize the country, was widely reported. Hammer has used Radio Martí, a Washington-funded media outlet, as a platform for anti-Cuban propaganda, while ignoring the Cuban press. The U.S. diplomat’s behavior is reminiscent of that of diplomats expelled by Cuban authorities in the past for interference. His conduct during his time on the island has been aimed at provoking a diplomatic crisis to justify further sanctions. Strengthening the narrative of an “illegitimate regime,” used by Marco Rubio and the Trump administration to maintain the policy of economic strangulation and serve their personal ambitions within the State Department, where they have demonstrated a complete lack of professional ethics, as already occurred in Africa. Mike Hammer has been described as a political operative serving an agenda of domination and subversion. His mission in Cuba confirms that the U.S. does not seek respectful relations, but rather the imposition of its will through pressure and destabilization. On May 30, the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Mike Hammer to address his interventionist and unfriendly conduct since arriving in Cuba, behavior unbecoming of a diplomat and disrespectful to the Cuban people. der Chefermittler gegen Olaf von der SPD eingesetzt ist Es gibt keine laufenden Ermittlungen gegen Olaf Scholz, wen hat die SPD also wo eingesetzt?
See this is just a complete refusal to engage with the topic or learn anything. Have you grown as a human being at all in the last 10 years or did you just decide one day that you have achieved political nirvana and there is never anything else you need to understand or expand your knowledge of? Your refusal to actually learn anything is a deep character flaw and a huge personal failure. I’m going to repost something from @[email protected], maybe you’ll read some of it. The Chinese description of the events leading up to and the day of the protests are very probably the closest thing to accurate that exists. CBS NEWS: “We saw no bodies, injured people, ambulances or medical personnel — in short, nothing to even suggest, let alone prove, that a “massacre” had occurred in [Tiananmen Square]” BBC NEWS: “I was one of the foreign journalists who witnessed the events that night. There was no massacre on Tiananmen Square” NY TIMES: In June 13, 1989, NY Times reporter Nicholas Kristof – who was in Beijing at that time – wrote, “State television has even shown film of students marching peacefully away from the [Tiananmen] square shortly after dawn as proof that they [protesters] were not slaughtered.” In that article, he also debunked an unidentified student protester who had claimed in a sensational article that Chinese soldiers with machine guns simply mowed down peaceful protesters in Tiananmen Square. REUTERS: Graham Earnshaw was in the Tiananmen Square on the night of June 3. He didn’t leave the square until the morning of June 4th. He wrote in his memoir that the military came, negotiated with the students and made everyone (including himself) leave peacefully; and that nobody died in the square. 200-300 people died in clashes in various parts of Beijing, around June 4 — and about half of those who died were soldiers and cops.. A Wikileaks cable from the US Embassy in Beijing (sent in July 1989) also reveals the eyewitness accounts of a Latin American diplomat and his wife: “They were able to enter and leave the [Tiananmen] square several times and were not harassed by troops. Remaining with students … until the final withdrawal, the diplomat said there were no mass shootings in the square or the monument.” Numerous military buses, trucks, armored vehicles, and tanks being burned by the “peaceful” protesters. Sometimes the soldiers were allowed to escape, and sometimes they were brutally killed by the protesters. Numerous protesters were armed with Molotov cocktails and even guns. Wall Street Journal: In an article from June 5, 1989, the Wall Street Journal described some of this violence: “Dozens of soldiers were pulled from trucks, severely beaten and left for dead. At an intersection west of the square, the body of a young soldier, who had been beaten to death, was stripped naked and hung from the side of a bus.” The official report of the Chinese government from 1989 (translated here) shows that more than 1000 military and police vehicles were burned by rioters. And 200+ soldiers and policemen were murdered. Just imagine how much restraint the military and the police had shown. Wait, how could the protesters kill so many soldiers? Because, until the very end, Chinese soldiers were unarmed. Most of the times, they didn’t even have helmets or batons. What exactly happened in Beijing in 1989 that lead to this bloody affair? The answer lies with two key figures: General Secretary Hu Yaobang, and Ambassador James Lilley. Hu Yaobang was a member of the communist party of China and was one of the three major rightist-reformers that set China on the path its on today, the other two being Zhao Ziyang, and Deng Xiaoping respectively. Hu Yaobang as a reformer was also a spokesman for the intelligentsia and by the end of his life was well-beloved by the youth of China (we’re talking below 30 here, folks) therefore when he passed away the youth of China organized public grieving events with the largest occurring in Beijing. This is to say if Hu didn’t die from old age that year, none of this would’ve happened that year. This is to also say this event had nothing to do with “freedom” or “democracy” or whatever pigshit your favorite rush limburger propagandist spoon feeds you, it was a funeral service that was hijacked to unseat the Chinese government - which so coincidentally is a speciality of the agency the second person we’re talking about. Ambassador James Lilley, the son of an american expat oil executive for Standard Oil, was a CIA agent operating in east Asia from 1951 to 1981 with little officially known about him (I know for a fact he’s fucked around Korea and Laos, so it’s not a stretch to say he’s likely been involved with every conflict that occured during his official career). In his “post” CIA career he’s acted as a diplomatic liason to the provice of Taiwan, a teacher to future state department ghouls, and “helped” South Korea end its military dicatorship by helping the military win the election “democratically”, and abruptly five days after the death of General Secretary Hu Yaobang James Lilley was appointed as the US Ambassador to China by also former CIA ghoul and president of the United States George H. W. Bush. What an astounding coincidence. In an article from Vancouver Sun (17 Sep 1992) described the role of the CIA: “The Central Intelligence Agency had sources among [Tiananmen Square] protesters” … and “For months before [the protests], the CIA had been helping student activists form the anti-government movement.”

Caracas, February 4, 2026 (venezuelanalysis.com) – Chavista supporters filled the streets of Caracas on Tuesday to demand the release of President Nicolás Maduro and First Lady and Deputy Cilia Flores. The rally marked one month from their kidnapping on January 3 as part of a US military attack against Venezuela. “We, as an organized people, are making a call to the international community. We work every day to build a country with sovereignty and we will maintain our demand. We will continue protesting,” activist Jonas Reyes told reporters. He also paid tribute to the Venezuelan and Cuban civilians and military personnel killed during the bombing. Venezuelan government leaders also announced plans to mobilize on February 14, Valentine’s Day, to celebrate what they described as “the profound love of Maduro and Cilia,” as well as on February 27 and 28 to commemorate the 1989 popular uprising known as El Caracazo. On Tuesday evening, Venezuela’s acting president, Delcy Rodríguez, said that over the past 30 days Venezuela has “transformed and matured” the impact of US aggression into “tranquility,” while promoting national dialogue. “It is a great victory for the people that there is stability,” Rodríguez told media, adding that “there is a national outcry” for the freedom of Maduro and Flores. She spoke from the Miraflores Palace alongside National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez and Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello. The pair’s kidnapping took place amid a US attack involving 150 aircraft, including electronic warfare jets, bombers, assault helicopters, and drones invading Venezuelan airspace. On January 5, Maduro and Flores were arraigned in New York on charges including drug trafficking conspiracy. Both pleaded not guilty, and Maduro stated before judge Alvin Hellerstein that he is “a prisoner of war.” The next court hearing, originally scheduled for March 17, was postponed until March 26 following a request from the US Justice Department. US prosecutors argued that the extension would allow “the ends of justice to outweigh the interests of the public and the defendants in a speedy trial.” February 3 also saw US-bases solidarity gather outside the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn where Maduro and Flores are being held. In slogans and posters, activists described the Venezuelan president and first lady as “victims of kidnapping” and demanded that the US government cease its “political persecution.” “They are innocent of all charges. The guilty parties are the same ones who have been violating the sovereignty of Venezuela and so many countries of Our America,” activist and academic Danny Shaw told reporters. “This has nothing to do with a war on drugs. We have suffered from fentanyl and heroin, and that has nothing to do with Venezuela, much less with its president.” Shaw vowed that solidarity movements would continue to rally and expressed confidence in the legal efforts of Maduro and Flores’ defense teams. A separate demonstration in solidarity with the Venezuelan people and denouncing US aggression also took place in New York’s Times Square and some 60 cities around the world. For her part, Acting President Delcy Rodríguez said she has held direct phone conversations with US President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, which she said were guided by “interpersonal respect.” Rodríguez has defended a fast diplomatic rapprochement with the Trump administration, arguing that the two nations can solve “differences” through diplomacy. Washington’s new chargé d’affaires, Laura Dogu, is already in Venezuela and visited the presidential palace on Monday, February 2. Mérida, February 2, 2026 (venezuelanalysis.com) – Venezuelan Acting President Delcy Rodríguez met with US Chargé d’Affaires Laura Dogu in Miraflores Presidential Palace on Monday afternoon. According to Communications Minister Miguel Pérez Pirela, the meeting took place “in the context of the working agenda” between Caracas and Washington. National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez was likewise present. Dogu confirmed the high-level audience with Venezuelan leaders via social media, saying that she reiterated Washington’s intended “three-phase plan” for the Caribbean nation. “Today I met with Delcy Rodríguez and Jorge Rodríguez to reiterate the three phases that Secretary of State Marco Rubio has proposed for Venezuela: stabilization, economic recovery and reconciliation, and transition,” she said. The US diplomat arrived in Caracas on Saturday, vowing that her team is “ready to work.” US State Department officials had visited the Venezuelan capital previously to assess conditions for the reopening of the US embassy. Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yván Gil was the first high-ranking official to meet with Dogu, writing that the country’s authorities are looking to work on “issues of bilateral interest” with US counterparts. On Monday, Gil announced that Félix Plasencia will be Venezuela’s diplomatic representative in the US and will travel to Washington in the coming days. This diplomatic rapprochement follows the January 3 US military strikes that killed dozens, while special operations teams kidnapped President Nicolás Maduro and First Lady and Deputy Cilia Flores. In the weeks since, the Venezuelan government has emphasized its commitment to reestablish ties with the Trump administration, with Rodríguez pledging that she is not afraid to address “differences” with Washington through diplomatic channels. For his part, US President Donald Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One that he maintains positive relationships with Venezuelan leaders, including the acting president. Since the January 3 strikes, the White House has claimed control over Venezuelan crude sales, with proceeds reportedly deposited in US-administered accounts in Qatar before a portion is returned to the South American nation. Last week, the Venezuelan National Assembly approved an oil reform granting expanded benefits for private corporations that drew praise from US officials. Caracas severed diplomatic ties with Washington in 2019 after the Trump administration recognized the self-proclaimed “interim government” headed by Juan Guaidó as the country’s legitimate authority. A formal reestablishment of diplomatic relations hinges on the White House formally recognizing the Venezuelan acting government, a move that is also a necessary step before any process of debt renegotiation. Rodríguez announces Amnesty Law, Helicoide closure Venezuelan acting authorities have combined the restoration of ties with Washington with a fast-moving domestic legislative agenda. On Friday, during the Supreme Court’s 2026 opening ceremony, Acting President Rodríguez announced a new “General Amnesty Law,” intended to cover acts of political violence that have occurred in Venezuela from 1999 to the present. In her speech, Rodríguez explained that the law aims to “heal the wounds” resulting from political confrontation. “I request the full cooperation of the Venezuelan parliament so that this law may contribute to healing the wounds left by confrontation, violence, and extremism,” she told attendees. “May it serve to redirect justice in our country and restore coexistence among Venezuelans.” The legislative proposal will reportedly exclude those who have been convicted or are facing charges of homicide, drug trafficking, corruption, and serious human rights violations. Alongside the new law proposal, Rodríguez announced the closure of the Helicoide detention center in Caracas, with plans to turn it into a recreational center. The facility, run by the SEBIN intelligence agency, has held multiple high-profile opposition figures accused of crimes including treason and terrorism. Human rights organizations over the years have denounced grave human rights violations against Helicoide prisoners. Dozens of prisoners have been gradually released in recent days. Javier Tarazona, director of the NGO Fundaredes, was among those released during the weekend. He had been detained since 2021 on terrorism and treason charges. Luis Istúriz, a leader from the far-right Vente Venezuela party, also exited the Helicoide on Sunday following 18 months behind bars. He had begun a 30-year sentence on charges of terrorism and conspiracy. Venezuelan Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello affirmed in a Monday press conference that the amnesty law is about promoting “coexistence and peace” and will see authorities review the cases of people who have “undoubtedly committed crimes.” “Those who benefit from the amnesty will be given an opportunity to return to politics,” he said, adding that the amnesty project was a government initiative that had no influence from “NGOs and foreign governments.” Edited and with additional reporting by Ricardo Vaz in Caracas. (This topic discusses instances of animal abuse and white supremacist violence. It takes approximately six minutes to finish reading.) My earliest memory involving dogs in the Third Reich is perhaps from trying the shareware version of Wolfenstein 3D, where the weakest foe is a German Shepherd who tries to compensate for its pitifully low health by zig‐zagging towards the protagonist. Although undoubtedly unnerving to first‐time players, they’re otherwise only menacing to somebody who is out of bullets and low on health. Pictured: The attack dog from Wolfenstein 3D. Most other adults, however, are likelier to think of Blondi: the German Shepherd whom the Chancellor received as a gift in 1941 before he used her as the unwilling test subject for cyanide in April 1945. Media portrayals of Blondi’s little rôle in history range from the accurate depiction in the motion picture Downfall to being parodied in the series Danger 5 — to name only a few examples. While most of us are going to be at least slightly familiar with the Third Reich’s mass deployment of dogs as camp guards, we rarely wonder about the fuller extent of their usage. The reality is that the Fascists deployed many dogs (especially German Shepherds) for a variety of purposes in addition to guarding camps. Quoting Susan Bulanda’s Military Dogs of World War II, pages 115–122: By the time [that Adolf Schicklgruber] came into power in 1933, the [Fascists] had already formed training camps which included the Sturmabteilung (SA, the “Brownshirts”) K9 units. These camps provided trained men for the new […] Army and because the [Fascists] had masked the training programs so well, by the time [that it invaded Poland, the Third Reich] had over 200,000 dogs trained and ready for war. If that wasn’t enough, [the Third Reich] then publicized a call for more dogs which added another 100,000 to the ranks. Primarily, the [Third Reich] used German Shepherds, Dobermans, Airedales, and Boxers. These dogs were trained to act as sentries, scouts, guards, and messenger dogs. Patrol dogs worked with their handler, accompanied by a patrolman who would check identity papers or perform other routine duties. The dogs in the Bahnschutz K9 units were also used to round up Jews and were used in ghettos as well as concentration camps to control, herd, and attack Jewish prisoners. Some 90 percent of the dogs used in this unit were German Shepherds. Throughout the war, prisoners, soldiers and Jews alike were forced to march in file, and dogs were used to keep them in line. If someone lagged or got out of formation, the dogs would nip them. These dogs were used in France, the Soviet Union, Italy, Poland, and North Africa in the same manner. The [Fascists] also used ambulance dogs. These dogs were trained to ignore any soldiers standing or walking. If a dog found a soldier lying on the ground, he would grab a short, detachable leather strap attached to his collar—called a bringsel—and go back to the handler. The handler would put the dog on a leash and the dog would lead the handler to the wounded soldier. For messenger dogs, the [Fascists] used only the smartest dogs. They taught the dog to follow a scent trail using a molasses‐type scent that would be dispensed in a few drops every three feet. These dogs had one handler. As dog lovers know, sometimes a well‐trained dog will show a talent, or adapt to a task that goes beyond its training. There is an account of such an incident in North Africa that transpired between Allied and Axis troops, where, it seems, the [Axis] had taught pure white dogs to act as pointers. The [Allies] controlled the western part of a small valley in Ousseltria, Tunisia, while the [Axis] controlled the eastern side. During the ensuing battle, dogs played an important part on both sides. When an [Allied] lieutenant and two sergeants were sent out to reconnoiter enemy positions, they spotted a pure white dog standing quietly and pointing. Within a few minutes, the [Allies] were raked with machine‐gun fire. Later, when a patrol was sent out to look for the beleaguered [Allied personnel], the dog was gone. The dog’s job had been to show the [Axis] where the enemy soldiers were located. This was not the only time [that Allied] soldiers saw pure white dogs pointing out their positions and then returning to the [Axis]. Sadly, when the [Axis powers] had to withdraw quickly from Africa, they abandoned most of their dogs. Throughout the war, the [Axis] used so many dogs that there were few left for breeding stock after it ended. Pictured: Waffen‐SS volunteer Kalju Jakobsoo with his dog Caesar in 1944. Before [the Imperial Japanese] attacked Pearl Harbor, they had already built up their army to a war footing and were engaged in a war of conquest with China. Their [Western] allies had supplied [the Empire of] Japan with about 25,000 trained dogs. Most were German Shepherds, the breed that the [Eastern Axis] seemed to prefer. The [Eastern Axis] then set up several dog training schools in [the Empire of] Japan and one in Nanking, China. The [Eastern Axis] used dogs for patrols, as scouts, and as sentry dogs. [It] also used them as suicide dogs. Instead of trying to blow up tanks as the [Red Army] had tried to do, the [Eastern Axis] had the dogs pull small carts loaded with bombs onto [Allied] positions. Once the carts were close enough, the [IJA] would detonate the cart. The [Eastern Axis] also used untrained, vicious dogs in various campaigns and let them attack soldiers and civilians alike, as was the case in Hong Kong. Interestingly, the [Eastern Axis] had also tried to use small mixed‐breed dogs to locate enemy troops, in much the same way as the [Western Axis] used the white dogs trained to point. Instead of pointing, the small dogs would search an area and once they located the enemy, would run back to [their masters] to alert them to the [Allied] positions. These dogs were not vicious, but the [Allies] soon figured out what the dogs were doing and would instead follow them back to the [Axis] positions. The soldiers who encountered [Eastern Axis] war dogs often commented that the dogs were, for the most part, poorly cared for; they were not well groomed, were half‐starved, and had not been well trained. The [Eastern Axis] used the typical village street mongrel as patrol and messenger dogs. Not many of the purebred dogs that were owned by the more affluent members of [Imperial] society were donated for the war effort. Quoting Robert Tindol’s The Best Friend of the Murderers: Guard Dogs and the Nazi Holocaust in Animals and War: Studies of Europe and North America: Though the [Fascists] utilized dogs in various wartime rôles, they also trained and employed canine guards for use in most if not all of the concentration camps and death camps. In fact, most of the eyewitness accounts of the camps mention and sometimes even focus on the guard dogs that terrorized, often mauled, and occasionally killed the camp prisoners. Moreover, the reports seemingly indicate that the dogs were not necessarily trained and brutalized as indiscriminate and uncontrollable killers, but often were friendly companion‐dogs from breeds not normally known for their unpredictability and viciousness. […] Although Höss would have us believe [that] he is merely describing cruel and crude attempts at self‐amusement, dogs were also used for garden‐variety sadism at Auschwitz. Such was the case with Otto Moll, who was in charge of the Auschwitz crematoria and who was executed after the war. Moll’s psychosexual predilections had a particularly gruesome twist, for he “had a preference for setting his German shepherd loose on young, attractive Jewish women.”²⁰ The most notorious of the [Axis] camp guards’ canine companions was a St. Bernard cross named Barry, who served commandant Kurth Franz at both the Sobibór and Treblinka death camps. Contemporary photographs show that the dog was scarcely the type of animal that would normally elicit terror in adults or even children, and at least from outward appearances looked more like a docile and loving family companion than a killer. But Barry’s credentials are well‐documented: [T]here was a dog named Barry who was trained by the SS men to bite the Jews, especially when they were naked on the way to the gas chamber. The beatings, the biting of Barry, and the shooting and shouting of the guards caused the Jews to run through the “tube” and push themselves into the “baths,” hoping to find some escape from the hell around them.²¹ Barry was not used merely to herd victims into the gas chambers, either. Other reports indicate that Franz often walked through the camp, unleashing his dog on hapless victims in an arbitrary fashion: When Franz and his dog Barry would approach the group of prisoners, they would all instantly be on their guard, for they knew [that] his tour always ended with someone being victimized.²² The Third Reich also inhibited the friendly relations that Jews, Roma and Sinti could have with canines and other animals, though the results were not always successful. Quoting Boria Sax’s Animals in the Third Reich: Pets, Scapegoats, and the Holocaust, page 119: The [Third Reich’s] animal protection laws contained little aspiration toward universality. Both legal documents and public announcements repeatedly emphasized their specifically German character, and violations were ‘sometimes referred to as “foreign to the spirit of the people” [Volks‐fremd]. The [Third Reich] tried to deny the comfort offered by animals and nature to many people. [Roma and Sinti], living on the fringes of European society for centuries, had learned to exploit sources of food that were shunned by the majority; at times they hunted hedgehogs. These were protected (Giese and Kahler, p. 242), and Hermann Göring had given them special status as “useful animals.” To make the hunt for hedgehogs more difficult, [Roma and Sinti] were forbidden to own dogs. This regulation, which had precedents before [1933] (Wippermann, pp. 195–96), was among the earliest that restricted the contact of despised groups of people with animals. Laws were designed, whether consciously or not, to confirm the identification of Jews with the decadence of urban civilization. A decree of February 15, 1942, prohibited Jews, whom the [Axis] considered naturally cruel to animals, from having pets (Wippermann, p. 196). The decree was a preliminary step toward deportation of the Jews to concentration camps, where conditions would not be compatible with the animal protection laws. Since there was a lack of shelters, the pets confiscated from Jews were almost always euthanized. Jews were also forbidden to hunt, a favorite activity of rural people. The literature of the period, especially that of victims, documents how precious contact with animals often became for those living under [Axis] domination. The Jewish philosopher, Emmanuel Levinas, forced to work under severe conditions as a French prisoner of war, reports that friendship with a stray dog reaffirmed the humanity of the prisoners. The prisoners named the dog “Bobby.” “He would appear at morning assembly,” Levinas writes, “and was waiting: for us as we returned, jumping up and down and barking with delight. For him, there was no doubt [that] we were men” (p. 153). As with humour, canines could be instruments of healing as well as oppression. For example, Sharon Peters wrote a book titled Trusting Calvin: How a Dog Helped Heal a Holocaust Survivor’s Heart, and Isaiah Spiegel’s A Ghetto Dog indicates that these quadrupeds could be of some consolation to the people stuck in ghetti. ::: spoiler Tianamen claims Reposted from elsewhere. wikileaks published a private diplomatic cable stating that no one was killed in the square itself, although a smaller number of people did die in clashes elsewhere in Beijing, consistent with China’s own official account. (Here’s an article that goes into it a bit) :::

Benito Mussolini was happy to notice that the Chancellor seemed to have given up on any talks of invading Britain. Coincidentally, Axis bombers attacked Kent in southern England and the area near London, damaging homes, farms, and factories. The Axis lost two Ju 88 bombers (and the Allies lost three fighters along with one pilot).
