I do have concerns about this because Kape was once considered a malware provider. Reuters indicating that ExpressVPN CIO Daniel Gericke is among three men fined $1.6 million by the US Department of Justice for hacking and spying on US citizens on behalf of the government of the UAE (United Arab Emirates). Kape Technologies has had quite a convoluted history. According to a report in Forbes, a company called Crossrider was formed in 2011 by “billionaire Teddy Sagi, a serial entrepreneur and ex-con who was jailed for insider trading in the 1990s. His biggest money maker to date is gambling software developer Playtech,” and Koby Menachemi. Menachemi was a developer for Unit 8200, an Israeli signals intelligence unit responsible for hacking and collecting data (think of it as part CIA, part NSA, and part high school, because the unit hires and trains teenagers in hacking and coding skills). the newly renamed Kape Technologies set out on an acquisition binge. The company started buying in 2017, acquiring CyberGhost VPN for about $9 million. Next, in 2018, came Mac antivirus company Intego for $16 million. A few months later, Kape gobbled up another VPN provider, ZenMate, for about $5 million. A year later, in 2019, Kape spent $95 million for Private Internet Access, one of the best known VPN providers at the time. There’s more to the story as well, but you can be sure that all your data is ~~belong~~ either being proxied by a botnet, or being used to spy on you. ‘I have nothing to hide!’ you may say, but I’m sure you have an app or two that still uses insecure HTTP update checks, which can be intercepted to trigger a malware installation.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warez_scene Skidrow is a scene group. There’s this thing called “The Scene”. It’s been around since the 1970s. It’s not a website or centralized at any place. The Scene is made up of decentralized groups and they talk over IRC and agree upon release rules and release their files on ftp servers called “Topsites”. Topsites are only accessible by scene members but the releases get leaked to torrent sites. The structure is sort of anarchistic, but which I mean nonhierarchical and consensus-based decision making. It’s kind of fascinating. To determine whether a scene release is trustworthy, it would depend where you downloaded it from and whether the release is still in the original rar files. Scene releases are uploaded to Topsites, but they are also announced in what is called a “pre”, the pre is the announcement message on the IRC server. There is a thing called “predb”, which records all of the release messages and makes them publicly searchable. The scene rules say that a game release has to be published in a multipart RAR archive, which also includes an .nfo file and a .sfv file. The reason for this is that Scene is very old and file transfers used to be slow so they broke up big releases into small even-sized files to easily replace corrupted files. The NFO file includes ascii art and information about the release. The SFV file contains CRC32 checksums for each RAR file. The SFV file is used to determine whether the RAR files were modified or corrupted. I will say disclaimer. It is possible to fake CRC32 checksums. Matching CRC32 will not guarantee that files have not been tampered, but if the CRC32 doesn’t match then the files have been tampered or corrupted. Make sure that you are getting the files from a website that you trust. Make sure that the release is still in the original scene multipart rar files. Search a predb website for the release name which matches the files that you downloaded. Look at the CRC32 checksums on the website and check that it matches the file you downloaded. I not sure the best way to do CRC32 checksums on windows. I usually do checksums on windows using 7zip software. With 7zip software, you can right click on a file in windows file explorer > 7-Zip > CRC SHA > CRC 32. https://predb.org/ (I think this site is correct, there are other predb sites as well)

Grayjay is not Open Source

My issue is with the fact that FUTO wishes to have exclusive rights to monetise Grayjay. The public should have the right to vote with their wallets on who they want to maintain their software. If someone else can do a better job than FUTO, why should he not get paid? Yes, FUTO are the ones who spent money upfront to develop Grayjay in the first place, but they are also the ones from whom people will be buying at first. No one is going to pay Bob instead just because he changed the icon. But if FUTO were to drop the ball at some point in the future and Bob were to pick it up, why should Bob not be able to get paid? Because there are companies who would to pay no dev costs, slap their branding on something, and monetize it, but who will also use their market clout (or walled garden control) to not provide a better product, but just make buying it from the actual developers less convenient, or limit interoperability with the original product. We do not live in a world of conscientious consumers who will go out of their way to pay the developers who actually made something, we live in a world where whoever’s version is at the top of the app store gets the most downloads. No one is going to pay Bob instead just because he changed the icon. This is just ridiculously naive. When Bob is actually named ‘Amazon’, ‘Microsoft’, ‘Google’, etc, people will trust them more than random app developer company.

Yes obviously. This is their privacy policy. https://store.steampowered.com/privacy_agreement/ It wasn’t that long ago they got caught downloading everyone’s DNS caches in real time. That means any website you access, Steam lets Gabe know. Also any website you accessed in the past, even while Steam was off at the time. I don’t know how trustworthy these people are, but Common.org rated them worse than they did Facebook.

CW before I start: I will reference a phrase now recognised as an ablist slur against the neurodivergent people like myself. A slur (I guess?) against people with autism. I am on the spectrum. Okay. Fine. Counter-Strike. Where do you want me to begin? In the good old days when I started playing you had to download like 20 zip files to get the latest version of CS. You know what they did? They forced us to install a piece of software called Steam. CS was the thin end of the wedge that drove Steam into every true gamer’s operating system. Now there’s good and bad aspects of Steam as a platform. Good and bad aspects of Valve as a company. But that move, funneling all us OG dial-up using CS players who were there since the beginning onto that janky ass platform that ate up system resources we didn’t have to spare? Well a lot of us didn’t like it. I didn’t like it. But we went along with it because we wanted to keep playing our fucken shooter. Now I have what, 21 years on Steam per my “veteran badge”? It’s been longer than that, I guarantee it. I wasn’t even using Steam 21 years ago, so I had to have been forced onto it earlier than that. I have a library of games I spent money on that I will never play. Slop. But that’s off-topic. Lets talk about CS. CS is a game of rage and frustration, triumph and victory, it’s play hard, play well or get brutally tormented and humiliated. Long before the horrorshow that CS has become today, it was already a torment nexus. You get killed early in a round? You’re out. 15 minutes of watching everyone else have a good time while you wait for the next round to start. Get AWP’d thru the doors on Dust 2 a couple of rounds in a row? Shit I have seen people destroy expensive hardware in the fits of rage that CS can produce in its most passionate gamers. CS is a game that will have you training with the intensity of an athlete while your body rots in a chair. CS is a game where you better do your fucken research, you BETTER know your meta, you better not break the unspoken rules of the economy as it phases from round to round during a match or you will receive a torrent of abuse from your team mates even if you go on to clutch out the round and turn things around against the odds and have them all buying full loadouts in the following round because you dared to P90 rush B on a hunch and totally destroy the opposition. Even when you play well, if you play unconventionally you will be harassed. You’re a woman, playing CS? Forget about voice chat. Unless you want to grift. But that comes further down the line. CS has always been toxic, paranoid and intense. I remember playing CS 1.4-ish with a microsoft ball mouse that I knew so well that I could whip 360+ degree spins just from the momentum of the mouse ball and slam my mouse down on the mat to put my crosshairs on the head of someone unfortunate enough to come up those stairs on the CT side of Aztec too early in the round and catch a .50AE to the dome. “Obviously” I’m aimbotting. No fool, I have just been playing far too long and my brain is wired to work this system. Fast forward, we’ll skip CS:Source because I didn’t even fucken bother. I was touching grass and washing dishes for shit pay during that period of the game’s history. I returned for CS:GO. That was damn near a decade ago and I was “aged out” of peak performance. I played better than I had in my teens, I was actually good. But then came the crates and the keys. Teenagers who were introduced to me as the children of family friends would add me on Steam, we’d queue, we’d rock shit. All femme trans team just beating gamerboy ass every night after work while doing mad drugs. But those kids, man, no life experience or education to teach them about the risks of the loot crate system, the total fucking black hole of gambling that they were playing with. I watched children cheat, grift and steal thousands, literally thousands of dollars worth of cosmetic skins from incel gamers who just liked having a girl to talk to while they played. “Hey hehe can I borrow your bayonet for a few rounds it looks so cool” and then yeet it’s onto the gambling market, then gone, nothing to show for it but broken hearts and gambling addictions. Violations of the social contract, violations of the heart. A soulless situation. I’m not gonna pretend I was above it, I bought keys. Why wouldn’t I? I was an adult, I had disposable income back then and a drug addiction that made gambling feel even better than it normally does. I somehow managed to unbox stuff so rare and desirable that it once paid off my entire real world debt before I ran it back up again. CS was the backbone of competitive shooters. The REAL deal, the hardcore shit. At least that’s how we saw it. Everything else was a joke to us. We only had to tune into the international competitions to confirm it for ourselves. Suddenly gaming was legit. Suddenly we resented our families for chastising us for gaming when really, we should have been gaming MORE, that could have been US winning hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars. Gaming. Leisure activity to unwind. Morphed into an economic monstrosity, corrupted youth minds, a whitewash for brutal regimes who hosted the tournaments. And you’d still get called a slur if you spoke in mixed company on mic. CS:GO2? I haven’t indulged yet. But I already know it sucks. I have made up my mind without playing it. I know they changed map geometry. I know they “fixed” the quirks that made each playing field unique and special and to which we dedicated tens or hundreds of hours to learning and discovering obscure boosts and 'nade techniques. But you gotta churn right? Gotta add something fresh or you’ll stop growing in the market… right? Well I dunno. Peak for me was 1.5 with the WoW mod run on independent ISP servers over dial up internet where I could pick a class and grappling hook around the map. I wasn’t at my most performant (a metric that makes no sense when it comes to how you enjoy your leisure and off-work entertainment hours) during that era, but it was chaotic and fun, our shitty internet connections meant it was always the same people queuing for the servers. You’d get to know each other. Mask appropriately and you might even be accepted and make friends. You bring in ELO matchmaking, country-wide or even region-wide players meeting, randomly, never to see each other again? Mix in the promise that one day you could make it into the big leagues? Add in a mechanism to gacha-gamble at the micro-level and then mega-bet on the competitions? I saw a game, a creation of love and labour that used stolen Deftones music as the loading music for some of its levels become the most monetised and commercialised franchise in existence. Now I don’t play games. There’s a lot of reasons for that, most of them are related to my broken mind, my traumas, the way I was raised. But deep down. Despite having beaten multiple drug addictions. It’s because I know. I KNOW. That all roads, for me, lead back to CS. It doesn’t matter what it is. I will go back. At this point I’m resigned. Will I still beat the pubes at 40 the way I surprised myself being able to do at 30? I dunno. I fear finding out. I fear the learning curve, the meta study, the pitfalls of gambling vice, the conniving, the harassment, I fear that if I cleverly ninja my way past all those laser traps I will land on a pressure plate at the end that confirms to me, finally: you’re too old to game. CS. The start and end of gaming. The only true game. Haters will disagree. I will allow them their perspectives. Hell I still aspire to create my own video games, as I have since before I graduated highschool and now after my career burnout as a software engineer. But the real game? the only game? I fear it. I respect it. I keep it at arms length or further, for the psychic damage it carries inherent to its designs which have been iteratively honed over the decades to become more and more exploitative. I love you, Counter-Strike. I always have, since I first played you at a LAN party on novelty maps scaled such that we had the perspective of rats in a kitchen or play room, to the last time I played you before my brain broke. But you ruined games for me, you ruined the minds of many younger gamers. You will continue to contribute to the moral decay of our neoliberal dominated world. You are the first skinnerbox I truly found, not the last I have to escape, but you might be the salvation, the salve, the cope that I need to scratch the itch that I have replaced with other addictions, more brutal lifestyle choices etc. But you are evil. Switching to Linux - A comprehensive guide

I’ve been seeing a lot of people wanting to switch to GNU/Linux(shortly just Linux) recently, owing to various reasons including Windows 10 EOL, forced integration of AI tools, screenshot spying, bloatware, etc. and I thought I’d make a comprehensive guide based on my experience. Please feel free to correct me when I’m mistaken. Note: New users, please don’t be intimidated by new terms. You may pick the easy-to-use OS/distros that just mostly use GUI(Graphical User Interface) as opposed to Console/CLI(Command Line Interface) and follow the simple steps. Ignore other details if you want. OVERVIEW: Step 1: Deciding whether to dual boot or not. Checking compatibility of your use-case and alternatives. Dual-boot only: → Using drives on dual-boot → Preparation for dual-boot. Step 2: Picking a distribution(For easy mode, choose CachyOS or Bazzite or Mint) Picking a Desktop Environment (For windows-like, pick KDE/Cinnamon) Step 3: Downloading the ISO from distro website. Preparing Ventoy to load the ISO. Configuring BIOS/UEFI (i.e. pre-OS system/motherboard settings) Step 4: Installation & Partitioning Post-install & other troubleshooting STEP 1-A: To dual boot with Windows or not: Decide how much you rely specifically on Windows based apps. For most apps, there are open source and/or free alternatives. M$ Office → LibreOffice. Edge → LibreWolf, Ungoogled-chromium/Trivalent. Outlook → BetterBird, and a shout-out to the new Tuta Mail client. Photoshop → Krita, GIMP, Lightroom → Darktable Premiere Pro → Kdenlive, Openshot, Shotcut, Davinci Resolve There are also workarounds to run Windows apps on Linux using a VM(Virtual Machine), WINE compatibility layer or containers, which you’ll have to experiment or look up others’ experiences. Note: People seem to have made Clip Studio Paint work on Bottles. Test it out yourself if you use it. Affinity also seems to work. → A few multiplayer games with invasive kernel-level anti-cheat(like Valorant, LoL, Apex, Destiny2, Rainbox Six Siege, Fortnite, some Battlefield ones) will not run on Linux. Check if it’s the case with the game you play on ProtonDB. Edit: As some people have pointed out, AreWeAntiCheatYet website is also a good resource on multiplayer gaming on Linux. Steam with its Proton support will just run majority of games otherwise. 98% of my 500+ games library on Steam just works. → For those who use GOG and Epic Games, your library will work through Lutris or Heroic. Heroic will have a library of all your games and each one will have its own prefix, I think. Lutris just has one prefix for Epic games and all the games in its library and runs like the Windows equivalent. → Those sailing high seas can still use Lutris/Heroic/Bottles to run stuff. IYKYK. Make sure to play around with winetricks and change runners if things don’t work. There’s a slight learning curve if you’re using Lutris and stuff on your own. Get the relevant community’s help when needed. I personally dual boot two different Linux distros, one of which is to run stuff from the high seas. STEP 1-B: (Skip to Step 2 if you don’t want Windows.) If you don’t have alternatives or if VM/containers/WINE don’t run the apps you use properly, you will have to stick to dual booting Linux with Windows. If you do, try to install Linux on a separate HDD/SSD. If you don’t have a spare drive, you can still install Linux in the same drive as Windows, but Windows has a history of breaking dual boot configurations and Linux’s bootloader. In this scenario, all you just need is to keep a USB drive with your distro’s ISO handy so you can live boot, open CLI and fix the bootloader. Also, after installation, don’t try to run games directly from external NTFS drive on Linux. You’ll have issues. You can always continue to copy/run files from an NTFS drive on Linux. But since NTFS is windows’ proprietary filesystem, expect it to corrupt it. It can be easily be fixed by chkdsk(disk Error checking) on Windows. So, don’t panic about this. If you don’t need to use your external drive on Windows at all, convert it to ext4 and safely use it on Linux. If you want to use your external drive on both Windows and Linux without corruption, exFAT supposedly works better, but exFAT doesn’t have journaling and similar features. So, a power cut during file transfer might cause data loss.(?) I started out dual booting with Windows myself as I was scared if some things wouldn’t work, but gradually, I’ve been able to ditch Windows completely. Step 1-C: If you’re using the same drive for dual booting, you’ll have to make some space on it for Linux to use. Windows can make it harder sometimes, so you might end up using some 3-rd party partion manager tools to force it, if it wouldn’t allow you. → Also, disable Hibernation, turn off Virtual Memory in Advanced System Settings and set paging size to 0. You can turn it back on after installing Linux. → To make some space, go to Disk Management and shrink your Windows volume based on your choosing. You should ideally be able to get as much free space as you see in Properties of your C Drive. If this doesn’t work, then try a reputable 3-rd party partition manager to shrink it. → Once shrunk, you’d see unallocated space of your chosen size. This is where we’re going to install Linux. STEP 2-A: Picking a distribution. There are a lot to pick from. The three big parent ones are Debian, Fedora and Arch and many other distributions are built on top of them. There’s also OpenSuse, which supports RPM packages that is typically used on Fedora. There are also a lot more independent distros like Gentoo, Void, Nix, Qubes of which I’m not much familiar with. You can explore those communities if interested. Debian is a fixed release distro. Fedora is semi-rolling, and Arch & OpenSuse Tumbleweed are rolling/bleeding-edge. Debian(Slow to update but supposedly stable) → Ubuntu(has unfriendly snap) → Mint(most popular and friendly). I’d not recommend Ubuntu based on my experience. But if you want to, go ahead. Fedora(Natively, it has only FOSS packages by default and requires a bit of really simple initial config for proprietary Nvidia driver and codecs- refer RPM Fusion). Fedora derivatives like Nobara/Bazzite usually have Nvidia driver and proprietary codecs already installed. Make sure to choose their ISO file that has Nvidia support. Only try regular Arch install if you have enough time and patience. [If you’re a novice, avoid AUR if possible since they are all user submitted packages there.] 3.1. Otherwise, try Cachy-OS that is Arch-based. It has a straight-forward installer and a GUI package manager. This is what I’m currently using after a lot of distro hopping. You don’t have Flatpaks on Cachy by default. I never needed to use them at all since I pretty much find my necessary apps through the repo. Make sure to search the ‘Repo’ tab and not just the ‘Popular apps’ under the CachyOS package installer(GUI). If you happen to need anything outside and if a flatpak exists for it, you’ll have to manually install them. 3.2. SteamOS, also Arch-based, is typically NOT recommended for Desktop systems, I think. OpenSuse Tumbleweed is also rolling distro like Arch. Has a nice installer and a GUI package manager. Most of these are regular traditional distros except Bazzite. Bazzite is an image-based or an atomic distribution, which is supposedly hard to break. The core of it is untouched and applications can then be installed using Flatpak/Containers. If packages are installed natively, they will be layered on top of the image. If something goes wrong after an update, it can be rolled back to the previous working image. Note: Regular Fedora based distros offer the ability to switch to 2 previous kernel versions during boot. 5.1. There are also other atomic distros like Kinoite(Fedora KDE in atomic form), Silverblue(Fedora Gnome in atomic form), Secureblue(if you take security very seriously), Aurora, etc. At first, you may pick a distro that’s not for you. In which case, always have a back up of your important data elsewhere and be ready to install another distro that you’d like to try. STEP 2-B: Picking a Desktop Environment (also Display Server and Window Manager/Compositor). TLDR note: Only worry about choosing Desktop Environment. Ignore others if needed. Desktop Environment is how an OS looks like and all that you can customize with the GUI. A lot of distros support KDE & Gnome by default. (Supports HDR/VRR) There’s Cinnamon used in Mint. (Does not support HDR/VRR) XFCE is a lightweight DE. Cosmic DE is based on Rust(memory-safe). OPTIONAL reading: → These DE typically have their own Window Manager(X11) or Compositor(Wayland). I’ve never strayed away from the default stacking managers that most Desktop Environments provide. But feel free to explore others out there if you’re into it. Popular tiling managers are i3 on X11 and Sway on Wayland. Edit: As people have pointed out, there are a lot better automatized window managers too. Please check out AwesomeWM on X11, and Qtile on Wayland. → Now, Display Server is the simply the underlying protocol coordinating input/output. There are only two that exists. Xorg’s X11 and Wayland. X11 is the legacy display server that is used by many distros, but slowly being phased out. Wayland is the newer display server that is supposedly more secure with GUI isolation(which X11 lacks) and supports features like HDR. Applications that are developed to run for X11 run on Wayland too using compatibility layers like x-Wayland. Cinnamon on Mint works well on X11 from last I used it and Wayland is only experimental. If you’re choosing Mint, you’ll probably be sticking to X11 for now. KDE and Gnome, both have wayland support. Gnome is soon phasing out X11. Xfce has recently introduced wayland support. → On most DE, both Wayland and X11 can be used by switching over in the Login Screen. Speaking of login screen, there’s the Display Manager. If you’re asked to pick anything in some distros, just use SDDM(for plasma), GDM(for gnome), lightDM(for others). STEP 3-A: Now, time to get the distro ISO file from their legit websites. Some of them support torrent downloads too. Distros like Fedora package different environments as spins. So, there will be Fedora KDE, Fedora Workstation(Gnome), Fedora Cosmic, and so on. Mint’s native ISO will have Cinnamon bundled. It also has a separate XFCE version and LMDE version(derived from Debian instead of Ubuntu). In other cases, if you have an Nvidia card, make sure to select the Nvidia version of the ISO if they offer you that way. STEP 3-B: Preparing a USB drive with Ventoy: →Before anyone asks, Rufus is great, but only works on Windows and you’ll have to format an ISO with it everytime you want to use a different one and you’re only limited to one ISO at a time. →Ventoy on the other hand, has cross-compatibility. It is a one time installation. You can just drag and drop or copy & paste multiple distro ISOs in it as long as you have the space in the USB drive. →Avoid Balena Etcher. I’ve seen people have issues with it. Ventoy should have both GUI and CLI method to install. Check their site. STEP 3-C: Meddling with BIOS: →BIOS/UEFI can be accessed during the startup of a system usually with F2/Delete/F12. SecureBoot(a Microsoft feature) has to be turned off before installation. Note: If you’re not dual-booting or don’t need Mircosoft’s secureboot, you can continue to leave it disabled after installation too. If you want it however, it can be turned on again after installation. If turned on, a secureboot key for your linux distro has to be registered. You’ll have to create a keypair using ‘mokutil’ and register this with a password. Check your distro documentation regarding how to do this. → Fast boot can be turned off too. → SATA mode should preferably be in AHCI. → Boot order can be changed and the installation USB can be prioritized to boot first too. This step can also be done by accessing the boot menu, typically by spamming F8 or F10 on startup. STEP 4-A: Installation & Partitioning: → If you’re using auto-partitioning, Choose the unallocated free space if you’re dual booting on same drive. Distro installations will usually have options like ‘Install alongside Windows’. Choose the windows drive otherwise if you’re getting rid of Windows. The installer will format the drive and install over it. Note: You can also choose to encrypt your disk partition with a password with LUKS during installation. → CachyOS has Limine( type of bootloader )+ btrfs ( type of filesystem ) +snapper sync for snapshots, which can be accessed at the boot level. → OpenSuse distros have btrfs+snapper integration for backup. IGNORE the following if you’re using auto-partitioning. → If you’re manually partitioning, you’ll typically have to create: /boot/efi (EFI partition type – vfat filesystem) of about 300 MB to 600 MB space for boot loader. /boot partition(linux extended boot - ext4) of about 1 GB to 2 GB size to store kernel images. / partition(Linux root x86_64 partition type – either ext4 or btrfs or one of your choosing), with the much of the rest of your free space. /swap partition (Linux swap partition type – swap filesystem) with anywhere from 2 to 4 to 8 GB of size. This is similar to the paging file and acts as extended Memory. This is optional, but good to have. Note: I suspect most distros have fully started using GPT instead of legacy MBR even for EFI partition. So, hopefully, no one has any issues with that. → For your root filesystem, you can use the standard ext4 filesystem which has journaling features. You might see a code “usb error -110” when you check your journalctl log or when you use the command : journalctl -b 0 -p err. In this case, just unplug all your devices and powercycle your motherboard, i.e. you have to press your power button for 10-15 seconds. After that, your Wifi/BT device will be detected again. → Most distros have good enough firewall like ufw or Firewalld. One can also install OpenSnitch or Safing Portmaster if your distro supports it and have fine-grained control of your system. → If printing, local filesharing and geolocation are not needed, packages like ‘cups’, ‘samba’ and * ‘geoclue’ can be removed or *masked(disabled). → Timeshift backup program doesn’t work well with Btrfs on Fedora because of how the root volume is labeled there. I think the root is labeled as @ instead of /. Look into it if you want to use Timeshift on Fedora.

I don’t use tiktok, instagram, and I deleted facebook, it’s all targeted advertising slop. My “friends” on facebook didn’t interact with me, they interacted with my posts. I made a post stating I was going to delete facebook on X date, and if anyone wanted my contact information they should reach out before then. 1 person reached out to keep in touch. I refuse to download apps on my phone. I already have an internet browser on the phone; one app to rule them all. Why do I need a fucking app for what I can do on your webpage? I switched to linux because both apple and windows are in a race to see who can be the shittiest walled garden that invades your privacy and steals your data, so yeah, I’m still very much, don’t trust strangers on the internet, including corporations. No I will not give you my information to get a discount or bullshit rewards points. I’ll pay full price, my data is worth way more than your paltry discounts.

Orbit by Mozilla

Orbit currently uses a version of Mistral LLM (Mistral 7B) that is locally hosted on Mozilla’s Google Cloud Platform instance. So it connects to Google Cloud for this? What does that mean “locally”, if its a Cloud Platform? And what does that mean “Mozilla’s”, if its Google? I’m a bit confused with this sentence. Does it download and execute it locally offline or does it send the data to Google Cloud Platform?? The page is not clear about this and I searched for an answer. I have the same Mistral 7B model that I downloaded from HuggingFace website and can use offline with a specific GUI application. It would be nice if I could Firefox point to that file instead. Otherwise, this does not look very promising and I wouldn’t trust it at the moment.

Managarr v0.6.0 is Out and now supports Themes, Vim keybindings, custom API headers, and more!

Managarr v0.6.0 has been released with some fun new features! Managarr is a terminal-based application for managing all your Servarr instances from one place. It provides a user-friendly interface to interact with your media libraries, making it easier to manage your downloads, monitor your series and movies, and perform various actions directly from the terminal. It sports two modes: a TUI mode (Text User Interface) and a CLI mode (Command Line Interface). TUI mode gives you an interactive User Interface right inside your terminal window, allowing you to navigate through your Sonarr and Radarr libraries, view details about your series and movies, and perform actions like adding or removing items, all through keyboard shortcuts. CLI mode lets you execute commands directly from the terminal to manage your Servarr instances without needing to open the TUI. This is great for quick tasks or for integrating with scripts and automation tools. The biggest change: Managarr now has themes! The UI has been completely overhauled to support themes! You can now customize the look and feel of Managarr to suit your preferences. Choose from a variety of themes to change the color scheme and overall aesthetic of the application. Windows 7 via native UEFI (without CSM)

I’ve got an old HP Revolve 810 G3 that I use for all those weird firmware updaters and other tools that require an actual Windows with actual USB ports. Nothing else. This model was introduced during the Windows 7 to Windows 10 shift, so it is OEM-licensed for both. And I had it running on Windows 10 which was not the smoothest experience. This laptop’s CPU and TPM aren’t supported by Windows 11 and it only has 8GB RAM, so upgrading is not possible. With the upcoming end of support for Windows 10, I was wondering whether there’s a better option than keeping the sluggish Windows 10. And I’ve decided to go back to Windows 7. If I run an (soon to be) outdated Windows, I might as well run a version that’s lean and snappy on this device. To make it not too easy, I wanted Windows 7 to boot from a GPT-formatted disk via native UEFI – without any Legacy mode or CSM enabled. Boot Medium The first hurdle was to get a working installation medium. Booting Ventoy via UEFI and then booting the Windows 7 ISO from Ventoy had the installer not see the NVMe SSD. Even after installing the Intel Rapid Storage drivers, the disk wouldn’t show up. Setting the boot mode to “Legacy” made the laptop not even see the Ventoy USB as bootable. Writing the ISO file onto a USB flash drive (using dd) didn’t boot at all. Not even when setting the boot mode to UEFI with CSM. After clicking through several links Google spat out, I’ve discovered WinDiskWriter. And after fighting with macOS 26’s malware detection, I was finally able to produce a working installation medium. This (I think) uses the built-in UEFI support, so has to be installed via “UEFI with CSM” for the installer to launch properly. Interrupt 10h During the startup splash screen “Starting Windows…”, Windows 7 calls interrupt 10h. This interrupt is usually provided by a classic BIOS, but is absent in a native UEFI implementation. Even though Windows 7 was supposed to be compatible with UEFI, it only is with “Hybrid UEFI” – where there’s the additional CSM, Compatibility Support Module. This CSM is providing the Int 10h feature (amongst others) so the installer (and afterwards Windows 7 itself) can boot without locking up on the “Starting Windows…” screen. As I wanted it to boot natively, i.e. without the CSM, I had to find a way to simulate/emulate that Int 10h feature. Luckily, I was not the only one with that idea. The project UefiSeven provides a small EFI module that gets loaded before the main Windows 7 bootloader to provide that missing feature and make the startup happy. Contrary to the instructions in the README file, for my installation of Windows 7, I had to apply it to the bootx64.efi instead of the bootmgfw.efi. Rename bootx64.efi to bootx64.original.efi Copy the bootx64.efi from the UefiSeven ZIP file into that folder After that, I was able to switch the boot mode to “Native UEFI” without any CSM. And it worked! At some point, I was seeing strange artefacts at the top of the screen: As it turned out later, this is due to the Int 10h emulation. It’s not perfect. And what these pixels represent are messages about Windows 7 scanning the filesystem for errors – e.g. after a crash or forced shutdown. You can cancel the scan by pressing ESC in the first few seconds. Or just wait until it finishes. (The pattern will change a bit and the system will reboot once the scan is done.) Windows Updates Now, with a fresh installation of Windows 7 Ultimate SP1, there were still a few hundred updates that came out after this. As Microsoft’s update servers are long decommissioned and you can’t even find most updates in their download area anymore, I had to find a different way. Luckily, Ricki Jensen is archiving all the updates there are in an easy to use ISO file that can be mounted using a CD emulation tool such as WinCDEmu. However, there’s an even easier – but more time consuming – way: Just visit http://legacyupdate.net/ (that’s http – no s!) using the automatically installed Internet Explorer. It’ll prompt you to update the Windows Updater and then update SSL certificates, some other components and rewire the native update mechanism to point to this website instead. Once done, you can run the built-in Windows Update tool as you would back in the days and it’ll find and install all further updates. (Including having to reboot and the updater finding even more updates afterwards. Just like it was back then.) You can also use the newly added “Legacy Update” option in Control Panel or visit https://legacyupdate.net/ (now with s!) in Internet Explorer. Windows Activation Windows 7 is – officially – long gone. And, while this laptop came with a Windows 7 Professional license, I wanted to go ALL the way and use Windows 7 Ultimate. As there’s no real way to get a license for that (apart from some shady eBay sellers) anymore, I wanted to make use of the trusty and well-known Windows Loader by Daz. But, well, that one doesn’t work on GPT partitions. Again, someone had the same problem a long time before me and Redditor execsrss made a new tool called EzWindSLIC. While that GitHub link in the Reddit thread is gone, someone else still has a mirror. Windows 10 Compatibility Someone found out that the Windows 10 kernel only adds a few features over Windows 7 and tried to replicate these features using a kernel extension. This resulted in a tool called VxKex. The original version still has a few bugs and the original author has more important things to take care of, so someone else stepped in and released VxKex-NEXT. This allows you to spoof Windows 10 and get some applications running that otherwise would simply refuse to run on Windows 7 (or crash due to the missing APIs). It’s a bit hit or miss whether it’ll work, but better than nothing. Windows 7 Ultimate in full glory And thats it – a fully working Windows 7 Ultimate that runs way more snappy than Windows 10 ever did on this machine. Especially after switching to the classic desktop. It makes you wonder why Microsoft felt the need to make everything fancier – and more demanding – in later versions.

Israel’s Killing of Journalists Follows a Pattern of Silencing Palestinian Media That Stretches Back to 1967

Following global condemnation, the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a statement saying Israel “values the work of journalists.” But the numbers tell a different story. Those deaths bring the total number of journalists killed in Gaza in almost two years of war to 192. The Committee to Protect Journalists, which collates that data, accuses Israel of “engaging in the deadliest and most deliberate effort to kill and silence journalists” that the U.S.-based nonprofit has ever seen. “Palestinian journalists are being threatened, directly targeted and murdered by Israeli forces, and are arbitrarily detained and tortured in retaliation for their work,” the committee added. As a scholar of modern Palestinian history, I see the current killing of reporters, photographers and other media professionals in Gaza as part of a longer history of Israeli attempts to silence Palestinian journalists. This history stretches back to at least 1967, when Israel militarily occupied the Palestinian territories of the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip following the Six-Day War. Beyond the humanitarian toll, what makes matters even more drastic now is that, with Israeli restrictions on foreign media entering Gaza, local Palestinian journalists are the only people who can bear witness to the death and destruction taking place – and report it to a wider world. Indeed, nearly all of the nearly 200 journalists killed since Oct. 7, 2023, have been Palestinian. A decades-long process in the making From the first days of the occupation in 1967, Israel has tried to keep a tight grip on media reporting, building a legal and military architecture that aimed to control and censor Palestinian journalism. In August 1967, the army issued Military Order 101, effectively criminalizing “political” assembly and “propagandistic” publications in the occupied territories. Yet despite such restrictions, local journalism persisted and grew. By the early 1980s, Palestinians in the occupied territories were publishing three dailies, five weeklies and four magazines. The most popular publications circulated up to 15,000 copies. But all Palestinian publications were subject to Israeli military censorship. Every night, editors were forced to submit two copies of everything they planned to print to Israeli censors. That included articles, photos, ads, weather reports and even crossword puzzles. Anything the Israeli censor deemed to be “of political significance” had to be removed prior to publication. Editors who violated these terms, or who were accused of belonging to Palestinian political groups, could be detained or deported. These practices have echoes today with Israel often accusing the journalists it kills of being Hamas operatives. Censorship regimes Objecting to these and many other restrictions, Palestinians launched the first intifada, or uprising, against the Israeli occupation in December 1987. During the uprising’s first year, Israeli forces reportedly jailed 47 Palestinian reporters, temporarily banned eight local and regional newspapers, permanently revoked the licenses of two magazines and closed four press service offices. While intended to be a show of force, most Palestinians saw the restrictions as evidence that Israel was afraid of Palestinians reporting on their own conditions. Many people hoped that the Oslo Accords – a series of negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Liberation Organization that formally launched in 1993 – would lead to greater press freedoms. But it was not to be the case. Israeli authorities continued to enforce military censorship on what they deemed to be “security topics.” They also revoked the press cards of reporters who did not stay in line and assaulted and harassed journalists reporting from the ground. Meanwhile, the newly established Palestinian Authority, set up as part of the Oslo process to partially govern Palestinian territories on what was meant to be a temporary basis, built a censorship regime of its own. It, too, arrested, suspended and closed news outlets it deemed too critical of its actions. Shootings and impunity By the 2000s, Israel’s attacks on journalists in the West Bank and Gaza Strip grew deadlier. Israeli forces fatally shot Palestinian photographer Imad Abu Zahra in Jenin in the West Bank in 2002, British filmmaker James Miller in Rafah in 2003 and Reuters cameraman Fadel Shana in Gaza in 2008. Since 2008, as battles between Israeli forces and Palestinian militant groups have grown fiercer, journalists have worked under even deadlier conditions. Yet even during unarmed demonstrations, journalists have faced deadly Israeli force. In 2018, during the mass unarmed protests in Gaza known as the Great March of Return, Israeli forces shot and killed Palestinian journalists Yaser Murtaja and Ahmed Abu Hussein. Both were wearing “PRESS” vests when they were shot. In addition, at least 115 journalists were wounded while covering the protests, which lasted six months. The deadly force has not been limited to Palestinians in Gaza. In May 2022, Palestinian American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh was killed in the Jenin refugee camp. One of the most famous Palestinian reporters at the time, Abu Akleh’s death drew hundreds of thousands of mourners, while Israeli police beat pallbearers at her funeral service. Legitimate military targets? International humanitarian law makes clear that journalists are civilians and therefore cannot be targeted during combat. That includes war correspondents who are covering war while under the protection of an armed group. For their part, Israeli officials argue that they do not target journalists. They say that their strikes are aimed at legitimate military objectives, often asserting that Hamas embeds itself in civilian buildings or that some of the journalists killed were militants. But such allegations are often made without independently verifiable evidence. Israel alleged that Murtaja, the journalist killed in Gaza in 2018, was a militant, but provided no proof. In the case of Abu Akleh, Israeli officials initially claimed that she may have been killed by Palestinian militants. They eventually admitted there was a “high possibility” that Israeli forces killed Abu Akleh, but claimed that the killing was accidental and therefore the government would not press charges. A recent documentary refutes that claim and identifies the Israeli soldier alleged to have killed Abu Akleh intentionally. Culture of impunity Even prior to the deadly Hamas-led attacks on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, the picture emerging was that of impunity for Israeli forces who killed journalists – by accident or by design. A May 2023 report from the Committee to Protect Journalists concluded that Israel engaged in a “deadly pattern” of lethal force against journalists and failed to hold perpetrators accountable. Since October 2023, journalists in Gaza have faced even deadlier conditions. Israel continues to ban international news agencies from reporting inside the Gaza Strip. As a result, local Palestinian journalists are often the only ones on the ground. Aside from the deadly conditions, they contend with Israeli smears against their work and threats against their families. Palestinian journalists there often run toward bombardments when others run away. As a result, they are sometimes killed in “double-tap” strikes, where Israeli air and drone strikes return to an area that has just been struck, killing rescue workers and the journalists covering them. All this has led to an unbearable personal toll for those continuing to report from within Gaza. On Oct. 25, 2023, Al Jazeera’s Gaza bureau chief, Wael al-Dahdouh, was reporting live on air when he learned that an Israeli airstrike had killed his wife, two children and grandson. He returned on air the next day. And the killing has not eased up. On Aug. 10, 2025, Israeli forces killed Anas al-Sharif in Gaza City, another prominent Al Jazeera correspondent who had stayed on the streets through months of bombardment. Five of his fellow journalists were also killed in the same airstrike. The Aug. 25 strike on Nasser Hospital is just the latest in this deadly pattern. Among the five journalists killed in that attack were freelancers working for Reuters and The Associated Press – two international media outlets frustrated by Israel’s refusal to allow its journalists into Gaza to document the war. Despite the danger, global newsrooms have repeatedly urged Israel to open Gaza to independent media, and a coalition of 27 countries recently pressed for access in Gaza. Israel continues to refuse these requests. As such, Palestinian journalists remain the primary witnesses of Israel’s relentless assault on Gaza. And they are increasingly killed as they do so. I mean…yeah…but it sounds really bad on the surface. Crypto. Namely, certificates or smartcards. Imagine if your driver’s license were a smartcard. It’d essentially just be a cryptographic key pair that asserts that you are “you” because the card says you are and you both have the card and know the unlock PIN. Now, that sounds like the government could easily track you, but not quite. All that really matters is that the certificate is valid. Not expired, not revoked, and there is a mutual trust in a third party (the issuer). This doesn’t require a query to the issuer. It can, and should, i.e. using OCSP or CRLs. CRLs, in particular, are a bit better here…instead of the service going back to the issuer and saying “is this certificate still good”, instead, the issuer periodically publishes a list of all revoked serial numbers that get downloaded by anybody who wants them. The important thing is, the service provider (i.e. the website) never has to ask about you by name. They know you are you, because you possess your private keys, and they trust that the issuer of your certificate (a corresponding public key, signed by the issuers private key) is thorough in verifying your identity. I think a mutual-third-party trust model (basically, certificates) is about as good as it can get. I don’t think you can verify without trust. That’s not how the proverb goes. Not at all.

At what seams would you break Steam at? In this day and age those are just app store features. Is there anything you listed Sony, Microsoft or Apple don’t have? I do understand having a Steam library would make it harder to switch but most of us have a few GOG games and collect Epic free games as well (though, I haven’t even looked at the free Epic games since Christmas). People even download a launcher like Hero Launcher on the Steamdeck to run games from other stores. We have the freedom to use Steam in tagent with other stores and we do. You can buy a game off GOG and add it to Steam to launch it. Steam is simply the better product, hands down. Edit: To prove that I see your point but just don’t agree with it: Here is a quote from an ArsTechnica article about a judge viewing Steam as a monopoly. Despite those changes, Judge Coughenour once again dismissed Wolfire’s argument that Valve had engaged in “illegal tying” between the Steam platform (which provides game library management, social networking, achievement tracking, Steam Workshop mods, etc.) and the Steam game store (i.e., the part that sells the games). Those two sides of Steam form a single market, the judge wrote, because “commercial viability for a platform is possible only when it generates revenue from a linked game store.” What’s more, the suit has not shown there is any sufficient market demand “for fully functional gaming platforms distinct from game stores.” Does this judge expect me to buy a game from Epic which is missing features and then pay Valve a fee to contact the developer through Steam? Will Epic cheapen their price by 30% so I can “enable Steam features.” This would be unprecedented. I cannot go to Amazon to return/complain about a product I bought from Walmart.
