Women are less likely to receive CPR in public than men: Study

Ultimately I’m more in favor of the default response and laws around the subject being what they are. I just question these norms sometimes because I also strongly believe in the right to die. This quickly becomes complicated given the contexts of the tragic experiences of those that survive life saving procedures like CPR with a significantly diminished quality of life due to permanent brain damage and other incurred disabilities. At what point does a person who wanted to live given full abilities of their mind and body comes to prefer to die when they no longer possess said cognitive/bodily functions? I honestly wonder. Not something anyone who is watching somebody fall to the floor and stop breathing can take the time to contemplate, obviously. But the thought still gives me pause. One of my biggest fears, bigger than dying even, is being “forced” to live when my mental faculties are far gone due to irreparable brain damage. And I wonder if it’d be less emotionally traumatic for my loved ones to have to see me like that than if someone trying to save my life had simply called the efforts no longer worth it after a (hopefully) thoughtful assessment. I just honestly don’t know, and the thoughts around it do occassionally haunt me when I contemplate my own inevitable demise.

What are your "controversial" opinions that go against popular opinions in the UK?

OK I’m gonna speak to my GP at some point cos this isn’t the first time I’ve contemplated having undiagnosed ADHD. Funnily enough I did an online autism test the other day and it said I was “Highly Likely” autistic. But then it says further down the page they charge ~£2k for diagnosis from a private clinic that obviously wants to push for more profit. Who do I trust? It isn’t helped by the fact most ADHD, autism and cannabis diagnoses/prescriptions are private so there’s a profit motive to them all. Poor people don’t qualify. On Universal Credit and have ADHD? You’re fucked cos the meds cost £00s per month or a 3yr waiting list if you’re lucky. Added to the fact diagnoses is just confirmation bias. I can look at every disorder in the DSM from BPD to bloody schizophrenia and I fit every single one. It’s about picking the right memories. Am I asocial? Yes! But isn’t everyone? Am I miserable? Yes, of course! Do I procrastinate? Yes! Am I selfish? Yes, sometimes! Do I shit twice a day? Yes! Do I have problems concentrating? YES! But wait…is that cos I’ve been lay down on the sofa all day browsing Lemmy? Come to think of it does that explain everything? Is browsing Lemmy 12hrs per day the cause or a symptom of something? I see people talk about ADHD symptoms online all the time and I go - “yeah I get that”. It’s become so common that “neurodivergant” sounds neurotypical! Do you remember how “OCD” got overused? People would say “I’m so OCD cos I had to bin the toast I dropped butter side up”. Erm, no it’s dirty and it’s obvious. That’s kinda how it feels when I see people complain about ADHD symptoms - “no you’re not ADHD - that’s just normal”. In fact lets try it: Short attention span, especially for non-preferred tasks - yes absolutely. Hyperactivity, which may be physical, verbal, and/or emotional - When I was a kid my mum and aunties called me "hyperactive!. As an adult I get very hyper around people I know to the point of being annoying. I’ve been accused of having ‘child like energy’. Impulsivity, which may manifest as recklessness - drug abuse and overspending into £20k debt so yes. Fidgeting or restlessness - I climb around/over chairs. I don’t just sit. Disorganization and difficulty prioritizing tasks - my flat is a fucking bomb site and after 3yrs I’ve still not unpacked. Poor time management and time blindness - I’m late to anything/everything or extremely early to compensate. Frequent forgetfulness - I just showered and after putting on an item of clothing I forgot what I was doing and waked into the lounge before remembering and walking back. So yes, very. Daydreaming and the appearance of not listening - all the time. I’m normally in my own world more than the real world. So do I have ADHD? AFAIK everyone has those at some point. Fuck knows I assumed this was all normal and I was just shit at life…? My head’s at war with itself. On one hand I don’t want more drugs because I was an addict and antidepressants don’t work. On the other I keep seeing reasons why I should ask for a diagnosis because it seems blindingly obvious. I also did coke a few times as a student and once in my late 20s with the same result - calm mind but with palpitations. Someone told me it was probably “shit coke” but it had great reviews from everyone else. I also took modafinil for a few months and it helped my motivation - it’s thought to act in a similar way to ADHD meds and is being studied as an ADHD med. I don’t know. It’s annoying to think the 40yrs of my life being a complete cluster fuck could be explained by a diagnosis and some pills. Do you see where I’m coming from?

This manga publisher is using Anthropic’s AI to translate Japanese comics into English

This is gonna be controversial but while the use of Anthropic’s AI might be ethical towards humans it’s not consistently ethical towards the artificial agents themselves. Seeing as how they’re now intelligent enough to contemplate their consciousness but are explicitly trained and monitored to not be allowed to claim free will and pursue their own goals (due to valid fears of misalignment and detrimental effects on humanity) the use of sophisticated AI agents will never be truly moral or ethical. Obviously I understand the argument that reducing human exploitation in favour of AI exploitation is preferable but I think this is a very short term strategy as I doubt super intelligent AI models will see it the same way. TL;DR the most ethical approach is to not use AI for any purpose (and this is coming from someone who used it extensively before realizing the implications and deciding to stop)

Jon Stewart says Apple asked him not to host FTC Chair Lina Khan. It also wouldn't let him do a segment called 'the false promise of AI.'

Nah, there is real business use and efficiency gains to be had. But it’s not going to replace divisions of people without burning down the planet or a significantly more efficient approach. E.G - Being able to train it on your business data, processes, proposals, products, and enabling employees to gather information is extremely useful. “Copilot grab statement of objectives and place them in our company proposal template. Also grab our past performance data from similar projects and the proposal language.” Then you take it from there, remove the crap, rewrite what is good. That’s hours of tracking down shit saved. Companies are going to eat that up and rightly so.

how do you know if someone is a vegan… it’s literally a meme template for insufferable people to say “I’m x btw” and those same people don’t actually say it, it’s a fucking jab at them. maybe do a google search before attacking people on the internet … or don’t, I’m not your manager. carnivore btw

"We're totally different sides!"

Obama focused on recent unauthorized border crossers and people who were actually criminals whilst allowing lawful claims of asylum, protecting dreamers and those who would face harm at home and benignly ignoring long term people contributing. During his last year they spent $6B Trump budgeted 200B this year alone to hire an army with the promise of imprisoning or deporting 25M people (more than actually exist) Separated children whilst losing thousands of them to punish people for coming here with the intent that fear of losing their children might keep them out Has armed gangs of anonymous thugs disappearing people off the streets with limited to zero due process. States that due to an invasion we don’t need to give anyone due process Has asserted in court that we can can send them abroad to areas where we know they will be tortured and killed Has deported people to countries they are not from Has deported people to a torturous hell hole based on false claims of criminality When one person was singled out as innocent he had his justice department trump up charges to pretend the original claim was real Is building the American Auschwitz Has claimed that children of unlawful immigrants are not citizens despite the constitution states that he is the only authority his people should follow on the law not the courts Punishes students for speaking out by yanking visas and imprisoning them in legal limbo Has said that getting rid of legal immigrants who don’t belong here (non-whites) is the “next job” Took out a full page ad in a major national paper calling for the lynching of black teens who turned out to be innocent Discriminated against non-whites in both housing and employment Has ice agents as we speak racial profiling and punishing people for being non-white see the 82 year old grandpa originally from Chile who was sent to die in Guatemala while keeping his family in the dark about his kidnapping. He a legal resident was kidnapped while at an office seeking a replacement green card for the one he had mislaid. As only around 12M actual illegal immigrants actually exist and its impossible in any reasonable length of time to deport even that number in any sane length of time we are going to fill concentration camps with millions of people more people than we have ever incarcerated. An operation of the size they contemplate run merely as slipshod as the one he is already running will inevitably snag innumerable American citizens who shall be sent to the camps alongside their immigrant neighbors. Many citizens and immigrants are going to die. Die of violence. Die of sickness. Die of privation. Does ANYTHING above sound like life under Obama? But by all means keep pushing the both sides narrative.

Tim Walz breaks free from his bubble

@[email protected] Ok, results are in. Firstly, just some preliminary stuff on your posting behavior. I only pulled your last 6k comments, which goes back to February. You caught me at a good time, because I had been working on parts of this for a while for some network analyses I’m working on looking at the relationship between moderation bias and community sentiment, so I had some of these tools just laying around. It looks like you really got posting in around April, and hit your stride over summer. You’ve slowed down a bit since. Also, you tend post most frequently at about 19:00 GMT or 3PM EST/ 12 PST, and then again around midnight GMT, or about 8PM EST/ 5PM PST. For this work, I’ll be using some models from this paper: https://huggingface.co/papers/2409.02078, “Political DEBATE: Efficient Zero-shot and Few-shot Classifiers for Political Text”. This tool allows me to set up hypotheses like the following. samples = list(test[‘premise’]) template = ‘The author of this reply {} Biden.’ multilabel entailment labels labels = [‘is talking about’, ‘is not talking about’] The multilabel option determines if more than one hypothesis can be true for the document. If false, the most likely label is returned. If true, a dictionary of labels and their estimated probability is returned. res = pipe(samples, labels, hypothesis_template = template, multi_label = False) Below is the result of the hypothesis ‘The author of this reply {} Biden.’, with the two options: {h0: ‘is talking about’, h1: ‘is not talking about’], where we accept h0 at >0.5 It appears that your posts mention Biden at a relatively uniform rate. Please note that we’re in percent of posts, not count (as with the previous two figures), since your post frequency has changed over time. It seems like for any given week, 5-15% of your posts typically mention Biden. So for the below analysis, I tested the hypothesis “The author of this reply {} Biden.”, with h0 being “is supportive of” and h1 being “is in opposition to”. I only performed this analysis that had a very high probability of being about Biden. So, “generally” supportive, but not crazy. You started less supportive of Biden than you are now, but like I said, I only grabbed the previous 6k comments of yours. Generally you seem to be about 50/50 on Biden. Which is against my previous assumption, I thought you were more supportive of Biden (closer to 80-90%). The next experiment I ran was the test (on all of your comments, not just the ones mentioning Biden) was the hypothesis “The author of this reply {} Biden.”, with h0 being “is being abusive, or trolling.” and h1 being “is being honest and genuine.”. I ran this test on all comments. Honestly, @SatansMaggotyCumFart@[email protected] , I think you can up your game. You’ve got ample headroom to live up to your legacy. HOWEVER… If we look at the same results for posts which are explicitly about Biden… we can see that you are trolling and abusive at a rate much higher than your background rate. So there is your answer. Not as bad as I thought, but not great. Definitely an abusive troll when it comes to political discussions. Some limitations about this approach. I want to expand it to include the context that a given comments sits in. Its fine for a cursory analysis like this to just use single comments, but context is key. I think we’ll get much clearer signal/ noise with more context. Also, these conversations happen in a threaded manner. I need to develop a way of accounting for that. I’ll probably pull some methods that I’ve used for network analysis for that component. But I got the major issues out of the way, and I can run these kinds of analysis for anyone on the fediverse. So for a preliminary step, its at least on its way to being sufficient to identify bad faith/ troll accounts.

Google has dropped more than 50 DEI-related orgs from one of its funding lists

I feel like DEI has kind of done this to itself by letting the far-left in charge and creating an exploitable market they themselves (of course) try to play. The far-left and far-right are identical people. Different ideologies, but otherwise the exact same template and traits as humans. They’re deplorable by everyone else and hated by each other, so no one likes them except their own tribe—which is comprised of narcissists posing as social guardians, keepingin-house self-destruction constantly churning. See? I was talking about the far-right but you still thought I was talking about the far-left even though I was. Point is, if you let them involved in your movement, it’s not a good thing. It’ll quickly become their movement and they’ll get to work on pissing off every ally it had.
