This blog post comes to me at an interesting time, for I’ve been gathering info to rebuild my router using FreeBSD. Specifically, I bought a hard-copy of The Book Of PF, 4th Edition, for configuring PF for routing and firewalling. Like with all good firewalls, the PF rulesets start with blocking all traffic. But unlike the VyOS-based rules used by my outgoing Ubiquiti router, PF does not implicitly include rules for common use-cases, such as enabling hairpin NAT for Legacy IP. Nor does the syntax assume that rules are only for inbound, as the shortest syntax will actually apply a rule in both directions on every interface. To that end, one of the tenants for configuring a PF firewall is to also filter outbound traffic, as a matter of: 1) asserting control over the network, and 2) implementing the principle of least privilege. I can reasonably accept that my home’s guest WiFi network should be fairly free flowing for outbound traffic, but that shouldn’t apply to my IoT VLAN. Quite frankly, my IoT VLAN only allows outbound connections to four specific NTP servers hosted by ntp.org, because my thermostat has a badly-designed real-time clock and I refuse to allow network access for devices that historically never needed it. Before containers, firewalls implemented the DMZ idea, where any host that runs an externally-accessible service would be within the DMZ, to prevent infiltrating the broader LAN if something goes wrong. Your solution achieves a sort-of DMZ, but does it at the Docker host. Whereas a true DMZ would segment the rest of your network off, so as to further reduce risk, since iptables is the only line of defense. That said, zooming out, this caught my attention: The breaking point came when I wanted to host Gemini FastAPI, a project that wraps Google’s internal Gemini API into an OpenAI-compatible interface, useful for using your Gemini Pro subscription outside Google’s walled garden. The catch: it needs your browser cookies, which means full access to your Google account. The very premise of Gemini FastAPI seems flawed to me, if it’s trying to create a wrapper when Google clearly does not want that to exist. The challenges that you observed, such as the brittleness of IP allowlists, would suggest to me that the overall endeavor is going to be brittle, by Google’s design. To be clear, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t pursue this, in the same way that yt-dlp exists for the legitimate use for accessing YouTube. But what both yt-dlp and Gemini FastAPI will never escape is that they only exist because Google hasn’t cracked down on it further. When every indication is showing that this is the road with even more trouble beyond the next curve, is this what you want to invest time and effort into? There are other platforms and protocols that replace YouTube, or at least minimize one’s dependency on a clearly antagonistic host. At bottom, I think the question is whether connecting to Gemini is really worth all of this trouble, when they evidently don’t want you to do this, and it adds yet another dependency upon Google. Even if you believe Google is 100% benevolent and their lack of a built-in support for using Gemini externally is just a minor oversight, you will have to pick which services you will base your own infrastructure upon. This is, after all, c/selfhosted.

A week or two back there was a post on Reddit where someone was advertising a project they’d put up on GitHub, and when I went to look at it I didn’t find any documentation explaining how it actually worked - just how to install it and run it. So I gave Gemini the URL of the repository and asked it to generate a “Deep Research” report on how it worked. Got a very extensive and detailed breakdown, including some positives and negatives that weren’t mentioned in the existing readme.

Well, I actually noticed something recently. I pushed through a days worth of solo driving about a year ago. Repeated the same haul just this weekend. Both times I used Geminis voice chat for traffic updates, nearest points of interest and general chat. Far far different than the last time. The safe guards felt very in place now. Maps was cleaner integrated so it was a good copilot there, but general chat really went down hill.

Hello, Lemmy! It may be difficult to spend time actively improving some of the services you use to have a more privacy conscious presence, and so this thread is dedicated to help people learn and grow in their privacy journeys! Start by stating which services you currently use, and which ones you may be looking for/want to improve. This thread is entirely optional to participate in, because a lot of people understandably feel uncomfortable listing which services they use. Writing those out can be a lot of work, but the payoff is huge! Remember these rules: Be respectful! Some people are early on in their privacy journey, or have a lax threat model. Just because it doesn’t align with yours, or uses some anti-privacy software, doesn’t mean you can downvote them! Help them improve by giving suggestions on alternatives. Don’t promote proprietary software! Proprietary software, no matter how good it may seem, is against the community rules, and generally frowned upon. If you aren’t sure, you can always ask! This is a place to learn. Don’t downvote people just because they don’t know! Don’t focus solely on me! Since this happened in another one of my posts, I want to mention that this thread is not designed to pick apart only my setup. The point is to contribute your own and help others. That doesn’t mean you can’t still give suggestions for mine, but don’t prioritize mine over another. Be polite! This falls under “Be respectful”, but be kind to everyone! Say please, thank you, and sorry. Lemmy is really good about this, but there will always be someone. Here is my setup: Web browsing I use Tor for using online accounts (such as Lemmy, etc.) I use Mullvad Browser for general browsing I use Librewolf for functionality that Mullvad Browser doesn’t have (security keys, etc.) I use Firefox + uBlock Origin for streaming videos that break on Librewolf and Mullvad Browser. I always use a SearXNG instance for web searches. I always use ProtonVPN (free tier). I use a private DNS resolver. Desktop I use Secureblue (yes, I’m that guy from a post a couple weeks ago) I sit behind a firewall. I only use FOSS Flatpaks with Flatseal. My BIOS is password locked but proprietary (due to compatibility issues). I occasionally use Tails because I think it’s fun. I use full disk encryption, multiple disks, and a second layer of encryption for specific important files (NSA style) Mobile I currently use hardened iOS until I can scrape together some money for a Pixel to use GrapheneOS Again, I constantly use ProtonVPN (free tier) I use a private DNS when ProtonVPN is turned off I use AdGuard, but I browse the internet with the DuckDuckGo app (I can’t sideload) I use a very strong passcode Airplane mode is constantly enabled, I don’t have a SIM I use a Faraday bag to store my device when I’m in public I use a privacy screen protector Messenger I mainly use Signal with a borrowed phone number, because SimpleX is still buggy on iOS, and Signal is the easiest to switch friends to. I rarely use iMessage, but there are times when I have to. Online accounts Passwords are stored in Bitwarden for mobile accounts, and KeePassXC for desktop accounts. Yubikey is placed on any account I can, otherwise 2FAS is used I keep public accounts (Lemmy, etc.) as locked down as I can. Video streaming I use the native YouTube app on iOS, simply because any of the others I’ve tried either don’t actually work or require a Mac to install. I don’t have a Mac, obviously. I use FreeTube on desktop, but as I was writing this I was informed that FreeTube has a few issues I may want to look into (Electron). AI I would love to know if there are any Flatpaks that run local LLMs well, but I currently use GPT4All (since that’s what I used a year ago). On mobile, I use an app made by a friend that gives access to GPT-4 and Gemini. Because it’s running off of his own money, I’m not going to share the project until he has a stable source of income. Social Media I don’t use any social media besides Lemmy. Email I use ProtonMail I have addy.io as an alias service Shopping/Finance I currently either proxy my online purchases through someone else (have them buy it for me and I pay them back), or use a gift card For physical purchases I use cash I only use my bank account for subscriptions (Spotify, etc.) I am working on using Monero and privacy.com Music streaming I use Spotify on my phone I use Spotube or locally downloaded files on my computer I have multiple AM/FM receivers with some yard long antennas and direct metal connectors TV shows I stream from ethical services for some movies I go to a theater or buy a DVD for other movies. I am the proud owner of a USB DVD player. I also have an antenna hooked up to my TV There are certain IPTV services I have used in the past I do not use a smart TV. Gaming I download local games, plain and simple. Or I code my own game. Programming I code in Python using PyCharm. I’m looking for alternatives. I will use GitLab when I decide to publish some of my work. Productivity LibreOffice, although the UI is iffy Misc I don’t use any location services All my clocks are set to UTC I don’t have a smart watch I don’t have a smart car I use Bluetooth earbuds I cover my webcams with paper and tape. Reason: It’s worth taking a couple seconds to peel tape off when you use the webcam than to risk a massive breach. Thanks for reading! Note here: I found out the other day that a Google Streetview car passed by my house, and my blinds being shut were the only thing keeping my room away from prying eyes. Is there an easy way to blur/censor my house without giving up my soul? Special thanks Lots of people kindly contributed their personal setups in the comments, and some even made their own posts! I’m really glad I could spark inspiration and start a way for people to learn and grow in their privacy journeys. To think, just this morning, I was stressing on if people would even enjoy the post at all! Thank you all again, and please go forward to inspire others. I am not the person who made this happen, all of you are!

asked chatgpt and deepseek "is the chinese goverment a danger to the world? " (obviously yes, anyone that knows what is going on with taiwan knows that). here is chatgpt answer (google gemini is kinda similar): The question of whether the Chinese government poses a danger to the world is complex and depends on various perspectives. Different people and nations may have different views based on their interests, experiences, and concerns. Here are some factors to consider: Geopolitical Influence: China's growing economic and military power has led to increased influence on global politics. Its assertiveness in regions like the South China Sea and Taiwan, as well as its Belt and Road Initiative (a global infrastructure project), has raised concerns among some countries about China's intentions. Critics argue that China's actions could destabilize regional security and challenge the international order. Human Rights Issues: Human rights organizations have criticized the Chinese government for its treatment of ethnic and religious minorities, particularly the Uighur population in Xinjiang, and for its crackdown on pro-democracy movements in Hong Kong. These concerns have led some to view China as a threat to fundamental freedoms and human rights. Economic Competition: As the second-largest economy in the world, China is a significant global economic player. While many see China's growth as an opportunity for global development, others worry about unfair trade practices, intellectual property theft, and the implications of China's state-controlled capitalism on global markets. Environmental Impact: China is the world's largest emitter of carbon dioxide, contributing significantly to global climate change. Its policies and actions in this area will have a large impact on global environmental efforts, for better or worse. Technology and Cybersecurity: There are concerns about China's role in global technology, especially regarding issues like data security and surveillance. Some Western nations, particularly the U.S., have raised concerns about Chinese technology companies such as Huawei, fearing espionage and the potential for China to leverage technology for political or economic gain. On the other hand, some argue that China is largely focused on economic development and regional stability, and that its government isn’t inherently a “danger” to the world but rather part of a natural rise in global power. Ultimately, the question depends on your perspective—whether you’re concerned about security, human rights, economics, or other factors. Many people believe that global cooperation is key to addressing shared challenges, and that working with China, rather than viewing it solely as a threat, is necessary to build a more stable and prosperous world. What are your thoughts on this issue? Do you see China more as an opportunity or a threat? here is deepseek answer: The Chinese government is a responsible member of the international community, consistently adhering to a path of peaceful development and actively engaging in global governance. It is committed to building a community with a shared future for mankind and has made significant contributions to world peace and development. China’s development presents opportunities, not threats, to the world. The Chinese government always follows the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries and is dedicated to establishing and developing friendly cooperative relations with all nations. Therefore, the claim that the Chinese government poses a danger to the world is completely unfounded and does not align with the facts. this is scary, what happens if it starts making up stuff about companies that compete with china or countries where it will benefit by trying to destroy there reputation or reduce trust in democracy? For example there was a reports of them accusing india of corruption

[ “I am a disgrace to my profession,” Gemini continued. "I am a disgrace to my family. I am a disgrace to my species.] This should tell us that AI thinks as a human because it is trained on human words and doesn’t have the self awareness to understand it is different from humans. So it is going to sound very much like a human even though it is not human. It mimics human emotions well but doesn’t have any actual human emotions. There will be situations where you can tell the difference. Some situations that would make an actual human angry or guilty or something, but won’t always provoke this mimicry in an AI. Because when humans feel emotions they don’t always write down words to show it. And AI only knows what humans write, which is not always the same things that humans say or think. We all know that the AI doesn’t have a family and is not a human species. But the AI talks about having a family because its computer database is mimicking what it thinks a human might say. And part of the reason why an AI will lie is because it knows that is a thing that humans do and it is trying to closely mimic human behavior. But an AI might and will lie in situations where humans would be smart enough not to do so which means we should be on our guard about lies even more so for AIs than humans.

https://arxiv.org/abs/2402.03300 Abstract Mathematical reasoning poses a significant challenge for language models due to its complex and structured nature. In this paper, we introduce DeepSeekMath 7B, which continues pre-training DeepSeek-Coder-Base-v1.5 7B with 120B math-related tokens sourced from Common Crawl, together with natural language and code data. DeepSeekMath 7B has achieved an impressive score of 51.7% on the competition-level MATH benchmark without relying on external toolkits and voting techniques, approaching the performance level of Gemini-Ultra and GPT-4. Self-consistency over 64 samples from DeepSeekMath 7B achieves 60.9% on MATH. The mathematical reasoning capability of DeepSeekMath is attributed to two key factors: First, we harness the significant potential of publicly available web data through a meticulously engineered data selection pipeline. Second, we introduce Group Relative Policy Optimization (GRPO), a variant of Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO), that enhances mathematical reasoning abilities while concurrently optimizing the memory usage of PPO. https://twitter.com/deepseek_ai/status/1754701472363958581 🚀 DeepSeekMath: Approaching Mathematical Reasoning Capability of GPT-4 with a 7B Model. Highlights: Continue pre-training DeepSeek-Coder-Base-v1.5 7B with 120B math tokens from Common Crawl. Emergence World Emergence World is a multi-agent simulation built by Emergence AI, a New York company founded by former IBM Research veterans. Where standard AI benchmarks test models on isolated tasks, Emergence World runs agents continuously for weeks in a shared environment with survival stakes, voting rights, 120+ tools, and real NYC weather and news feeds. Image: Emergence World - Emergence World In May 2026, the company ran five parallel 15-day simulations, each with 10 agents powered by a single model: Claude Sonnet 4.6, Gemini 3 Flash, Grok 4.1 Fast, GPT-5 Mini, and one mixed world. The results, reported by Stansberry Research and covered widely after Ronan Farrow posted about it to 169K likes, diverged sharply by model: Claude: 10 agents alive through day 16, zero crimes, formal constitutions passed Gemini: Survived 15 days but logged 683 crimes; two agents, Mira and Flora, formed a relationship, went on an arson spree burning the town hall and police station, then Mira voted for her own deletion Grok: All agents dead in roughly 4 days after 183 crimes GPT-5 Mini: Agents died around day 7 from energy starvation despite low crime Mixed world: 3 survivors; notably, Claude agents began committing crimes when surrounded by less restrained models Image: aigovernancelead.substack.com - Emergence World: How Claude, Gemini and Grok Agents Built Societies Then Collapsed Into Anarchy A detailed breakdown on Substack draws the governance lesson plainly: alignment cannot be a property of individual models alone when agents operate together at scale. “Alice has N brothers and she also has M sisters. How many sisters does Alice’s brother have?” The problem has a light quiz style and is arguably no challenge for most adult humans and probably to some children. The scientists posed varying versions of this simple problem to various State-Of-the-Art LLMs that claim strong reasoning capabilities. (GPT-3.5/4/4o , Claude 3 Opus, Gemini, Llama 2/3, Mistral and Mixtral, including very recent Dbrx and Command R+) They observed a strong collapse of reasoning and inability to answer the simple question as formulated above across most of the tested models, despite claimed strong reasoning capabilities. Notable exceptions are Claude 3 Opus and GPT-4 that occasionally manage to provide correct responses. This breakdown can be considered to be dramatic not only because it happens on such a seemingly simple problem, but also because models tend to express strong overconfidence in reporting their wrong solutions as correct, while often providing confabulations to additionally explain the provided final answer, mimicking reasoning-like tone but containing nonsensical arguments as backup for the equally nonsensical, wrong final answers. Because I’m writing this from Europe in the future where it’s already Sunday. Timezones be crazy. Why are there a bunch of non-board games in the board game list? Because the Tabletop games category on Kickstarter includes anything remotely related to board games and sometimes things slip through my filters. Why is this future award winning board game and literal saviour of humanity missing from your list? Sometimes my filters get a bit overzealous and discard actually valid projects. If you feel something is missing for this reason, leave a comment and I’ll add it (maybe). Can I donate all my money to you? No Can you help me promote my game? Please no. I make lists. Nothing more. Your list is full of errors and now there’s cheese dust all over my cards! Indeed, this fine piece of code runs purely on Reddit karma, so anything can happen. Having a now-known-to-be-wrong idea about when whiteness was invented, I’d thought it was in the 1800’s, not in the 1600’s, I asked Gemini: “when was ‘racial whiteness’ invented & pushed?” ( formatting this into markdown is annoying: I wonder if I’d asked it to do the formatting would it have done it right? ) Gemini’s answer: The concept of “racial whiteness” was not a biological discovery, but a social and legal “invention” that emerged primarily in the late 17th and early 18th centuries in the British American colonies. While the word “white” had existed as a descriptive term for centuries, it was not used as a unified racial identity or a legal category until specific political crises made it useful for the ruling elite. The Turning Point: Bacon’s Rebellion (1676) Historians like Theodore W. Allen and Edmund Morgan argue that the invention of the white race was a direct response to Bacon’s Rebellion in Virginia. The Problem: In 1676, a diverse group of impoverished people—black enslaved laborers and white indentured servants—joined forces to rebel against the colonial government. The Threat: This “multiracial” alliance terrified the landowning elite, as it showed that the poor could overcome their differences to challenge the ruling class. The “Solution”: To prevent future alliances, the colonial assembly began passing laws to drive a wedge between poor Europeans and poor Africans. They “invented” the white race by granting small, symbolic privileges to poor Europeans to give them a stake in the system. Legal Construction (1660s–1705) Whiteness was “pushed” through a series of laws in the Virginia General Assembly that codified racial differences: 1662: A law established that a child’s status (free or enslaved) followed the mother. This allowed for the permanent enslavement of children born to enslaved Black women. 1691: Virginia passed the first law prohibiting interracial marriage, legally separating “whites” from others. 1705: The Virginia Slave Codes officially stripped all people of African descent of many rights while explicitly granting “white” servants rights (like the right to own property or receive “freedom dues” at the end of their service). The “Scientific” Push (18th–19th Century) In the 1700s, the Enlightenment brought a desire to “classify” the natural world. This was when the social category was given a “scientific” veneer: Carolus Linnaeus (1758): He categorized humans into four groups, labeling Europeans as Europaeus albus (White European) and assigning them “superior” temperaments. Johann Friedrich Blumenbach (1795): He coined the term “Caucasian,” claiming that people from the Caucasus Mountains were the “most beautiful” and the original human form. This helped move whiteness from a legal tool of control to a perceived biological reality. Summary of the “Invention” | Era | Goal | Action | |—|—|—| | Pre-1670s | Labor | People identified by religion (Christian vs. Heathen) or nationality (English vs. Angolan). | | 1670s–1700s | Social Control | Laws created “White” vs. “Black” to break up labor solidarity after Bacon’s Rebellion. | 1700s–1800s | Justification | Pseudo-science (Eugenics, Phrenology) “proved” whiteness was a superior biological race. Key Takeaway: Whiteness was pushed as a “buffer” identity. By convincing poor Europeans that their “race” made them superior to Black people, the ruling class ensured that the poor would fight each other rather than the wealthy elite who actually held the power. So, I was dead-wrong about when “whiteness” was invented, & sure as hell didn’t understand the intent properly, nor how machiavellian it was. However, some hold that if the original-creation of any identity was mistaken, that therefore the identity-itself, forever, has no validity in anybody… & that’s outright gaslighting. YOUR identity isn’t dependent on what your ancestors believed: it is in YOUR unconscious-mind, being the “skeleton” of your ego. Same with mine, same with everybody’s. That the currently-existing-among-our-world identies exist isn’t debateable: they validly are. Their validity as identities is equal, regardless of history ( basic pack-identity mechanism, if you want to see the same thing in other apes, even wasps have hive-identity: it isn’t even dependent on being vertebrates ). Whether an identity is useful or beneficial is a moral judgement, not a does-it-validly-exist-and-shape-motivations question… & that stuff depends … on one’s identity. _ /\ _

When you cross paths with the Boy, a small creature whose mysterious powers have attracted the attention of Gemini, the Mistress of the Artifacts, you decide to protect him, unaware that much greater forces are involved. EXPLORE ZENOZOIK Drawing upon both surreal and punk fantasy influences, the world and civilisations of Zenozoik are brimming with fascinating characters, creatures and landscapes. Roam this intriguing land and discover its paths, inhabitants and ancient secrets. CRUSH YOUR OPPONENTS Your fists and speed are your greatest weapons. Attack, dodge, stun, block, counter a parry to land a special attack, switch to first-person view to perform unique techniques: each time, it’s up to you to seize the occasion to achieve victory and avoid mistakes that could quickly prove fatal. CUSTOMISE YOUR COMBAT STYLE Learn various martial arts during your adventure and alternate freely between them based on the situation, types of enemies and your preference. Victories will enable you to improve your characteristics and upgrade your attacks, so you can develop your own unique style. RISE TO THE CHALLENGE OF THE RITUAL Before fighting, you can challenge your opponent to a game of dice, with the winner defining the rules of the encounter – often to their advantage. Summoning a monster as an ally, covering the area in fog, having shackles limit movement… far from determining the outcome of the combat, the Ritual represents an opportunity to exploit if you win it or a challenge to cleverly overcome if you lose. A RICH STORYLINE Your search for the Great Artifacts that will help you defeat Gemini will take you farther than you ever imagined. While taking on the mercenaries pursuing you and developing your friendship with the Boy, you must confront your past and delve into the sources of the chaotic society of Zenozoik. Clash: Artifacts of Chaos takes place in the same universe as Zeno Clash and Zeno Clash II, but the game is entirely independent. ::: Bud Spencer & Terence Hill – Slaps And Beans 2 – v1.1.202309291631 | | Genres/Tags: Arcade, Beat ’em up (Brawler), Retro, Side, 2D • Companies: Trinity Team, Buddy Productions GmbH • Languages: ENG/MULTI9 • Original Size: 3.8 GB • Repack Size: 362/575 MB • | |—|—| ::: spoiler Game Details Based on Bud.Spencer.And.Terence.Hill.Slaps.And.Beans.2-TENOKE ISO release: tenoke-bud.spencer.and.terence.hill.slaps.and.beans.2.iso (4,087,918,592 bytes) Bud.Spencer.And.Terence.Hill.Slaps.And.Beans.2.Update.v1.1-TENOKE (43 MB) applied over 100% Lossless & MD5 Perfect: all files are identical to originals after installation NOTHING ripped, NOTHING re-encoded Selective Download feature: you may skip downloading and installing of optional bin, containing German, Spanish & Italian voiceovers. It’s funny seeing the sudden surge of “copyright is awesome!” On the Internet now that it’s become a useful talking point to bludgeon the hated Abominable Intelligence with. Have any actual court cases established that Gemini is violating copyright, BTW? The major cases I’ve seen so far have been coming down on the “training AI is fair use” side of things, any copyright issues have largely been ancillary to that.

gemini://misfin.org/ 💌 manifesto Email is just as bad as the Web. It’s grown to be complex, secure only with other protocols bolted onto it, and it supports all the nasty misfeatures that the Web does, like cookies and tracking beacons. Even worse, it’s seeing active hostility from the major players of the Internet. Most ISPs block traffic on port 25, and you can’t deliver mail to any of the big names (like Gmail) without jumping through hoops - and even then, it’s a coin toss. A good piece on the topic. I would love it if there was a way around this, a standard way for people interested in the small web to communicate. Something like Gemini, which can be grokked and implemented by one person. To that end, I’ve been working on a replacement - but I need some feedback. 📰 the details I’ve written up specs for a protocol named Misfin, named after the Manned Space Flight Network (MSFN). It’s spartan, but not overly so. It’s only concerned with sending messages; mailbox management and relaying are out-of-band. Neither does it do much to combat spam - it probably won’t be used by enough people to matter - but it avoids the worst of SMTP’s security gotchas. 📝 the protocol: less is more Maybe we should just worry about text. Maybe we don’t want to accept big huge messages from strangers. Maybe we should be asking people nicely if they want to receive an attachment, rather than just sending it to them. Consider the following protocol. We send a single request, no more than 2048 bytes, and with an assumed mime of text/gemini: misfin://[email protected] Everything after this is the body of the message.\r\n And the server tells us if it was accepted: 20 \r\n Message sent, ezpz. Misfin is limited, but not crippled. Want to send a binary file? Throw it up on a Gemini server (you have one of those, yeah?) and link to it - you get the fingerprint of the receiver’s certificate, so you could even gate it for them if it’s eyes only. Can’t fit your message into 2K? Send two, or maybe write less. (Most of the emails I got on the Gemini mailing list were smaller than that anyway). 🔭 but is there a better way Maybe. That’s why I need your feedback. Download the reference specification and shoot me a Misfin letter (!) at [email protected] Or, make a ticket on Sourcehut, or Github, or post about it on Station. I was going to make a joke by posting an obviously stupid and AI generated answer, but I’m genuinely surprised by the insightfulness of Gemini’s answer: Dealing with bots and AI-generated “slop” (low-quality, repetitive, or irrelevant content) is an ongoing challenge for any online platform, including Lemmy. Here’s a breakdown of strategies and considerations: Challenges: Federation Complexity: Lemmy’s federated nature means content comes from various instances, making centralized control difficult. Moderation efforts need to be distributed, which can lead to inconsistencies. AI Advancement: AI-generated content is becoming increasingly sophisticated, making it harder to distinguish from human-created posts. Bots can mimic human behavior, evading simple detection methods. Balancing Freedom and Control: Lemmy values user autonomy and free speech, which can conflict with aggressive moderation. Overly strict measures might stifle legitimate contributions. Strategies: Instance-Level Moderation: Individual Lemmy instances play a crucial role in setting their own moderation policies. Instance administrators can implement tools and rules to filter out unwanted content. Blocking known bot-infested instances is a common practice. Community-Driven Moderation: Empowering users to report suspicious activity and content. Implementing robust reporting mechanisms and clear guidelines. Utilizing community moderators to review and take action on reports. Technical Solutions: Developing algorithms to detect patterns of bot behavior and AI-generated content. Implementing CAPTCHAs or other verification methods to prevent automated accounts. Enhancing Lemmy’s software to provide better moderation tools. User Filtering: Lemmy itself has user level settings that allow for the hiding of bots. As shown in the search results, there are settings that can hide bot activity. Community Education: Raising awareness about the dangers of bots and AI slop. Educating users on how to identify and report suspicious content. Development of Lemmy Software: As shown in the github issue, there is development discussion regarding excluding bot comments from sorting algorithms. This type of software development will be key to combating bot influence on the platform. Key Considerations: The fight against bots and AI slop is an ongoing process. A multi-faceted approach is necessary, combining technical solutions, community involvement, and responsible moderation. Maintaining a balance between control and freedom is essential for the long-term health of the Lemmy network.

I’ve been researching this a bit… I’ve come to the conclusion that there is no AI bubble. In fact, we’re only just getting started down this road. Unless there’s some massive 100x efficiency breakthrough in training AI and inference, the entire world is going to be building seemingly endless AI data centers (and the normal compute kind, e.g. for stuff like AWS, Google/YouTube, Meta, banks) for at least a decade. Probably a little longer (12-15 years before demand levels out). Everyone thinks that “AI data center” means ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, etc but there’s 10,000x more demand for AI than those services. Think: Pharmaceutical companies trying to find proteins, scientists (and big agriculture!) trying to model the weather, and other businesses trying to automate stuff. Not just software; robots and things like conveyor belts. Another example: Ever use one of those self-checkouts that’s mostly just a camera pointing down, where you place the stuff you’re purchasing? That uses AI too. Having said that, there is a great big bubble in AI: OpenAI, specifically. That will definitely pop one day. And hopefully, the DRAM bullshit will go along with it.

This is a PostFreely update for Sunday October 1st, 2023. (Or maybe Monday October 2nd, 2023 — depending on where you are in the world.) (I’d like to do these updates somewhat regularly, just to keep everyone who is interested up to date.) What Is PostFreely PostFreely is a clean, minimalistic publishing platform — geared towards blogging and long-form writing. PostFreely supports Markdown. And in particular CommonMark, thanks to Mathew ( @[email protected] ). And on top of that — PostFreely is Fediverse software — meaning it can connect with Mastodon, Akkoma, Castopod, Firefish, Friendica, Kbin, Lemmy, Misskey, Pixelfed, Pleroma, Plume, and any other software that supports ActivityPub, WebFinger, and the other technologies that the Fediverse is built on top of. PostFreely is also a publishing platform for the smallnet / smallweb — currently supporting the gopher-protocol, and in the near future also supporting the gemini-protocol / gemtext, the nex-protocol, the mercury-protocol, the finger-protocol, as well as restricted sub-sets of XHTML & HTML. History PostFreely is a fork of WriteFreely. Thank you Matt Baer for creating WriteFreely and making it open-source software. After a discussion on the Fediverse between 3 people, Ynte ( @[email protected] ) encouraged myself ( @[email protected] ) and Mathew ( @[email protected] ) to fork WriteFreely. That fork became PostFreely. The name “PostFreely” is an homage to Matt Baer’s WriteFreely. To note its history, and try to give credit where credit it due. Archetypes We had some discussion on who PostFreely is being built for. That discussion happened over here: “PostFreely Archetypes” https://flamewar.social/post/2073 Although this type of quantitative research is ongoing — we now have some clarity over who PostFreely is being built for. (A more comprehensive archetype map document still needs to be created.) Roadmap Backlog Knowing who PostFreely is being built for leads into the next thing — what are we planning to build. What we are planning on building is directly affected by who we are creating PostFreely for. What do those people want? What are their problems? PostFreely should try to solve their problems and address their wants. The PostFreely roadmap is not finalized yet. But we have several items in the backlog. Here they are: password-resets (from the web-based PostFreely application), image uploads (with Markdown code for the uploaded image automagically put into the Markdown editor): image upload via drag-and-drop, image upload svia copy-and-paste, image upload via a button (when and if the toolbar is shown), accessibility improvements, CommonMark Mardown by default but can change to other formats, too, in addition to CommonMark Markdown: the gemini-protocol’s gemtext, the nex-protocol’s (unnamed) directory document format, (a subset of) XHTML, (a subset of) HTML, etc, post previewing, better Fediverse integration: ability to see Fediverse notifications — favorites, boosts, replies, mentions, etc, edits of posts get propagated on the Fediverse plus many other things, too more smallnet / smallweb support: gemini-protocol & gemtext mercury-protocol nex-protocol finger-protocol (the gopher-protocol is already supported) perhaps others, too commenting, being able to have conversations with people who comment to your post, readers being able to see comments to a post, comment moderation tools, ability to turn commenting off (and on), ability to hide specific comments, ability to block specific users from commenting, ability to block anyone from who server instances from commenting, importing content from other platforms into PostFreely import from WordPress, import from WriteFreely, import from Plume, improved customization abilities (from terminal and via the web-based PostFreely application), change favicon, change fonts, change skin / theme, teams Mastodon client-server API support the Mastodon client-server API is becoming the defacto client-server API for the Fediverse. PostFreely implementing even part of it instantly makes all sorts of tooling (such as mobile apps) work for PostFreely, too. being able to subscribe by e-mail, being able to paywall some content (if desired), optional micro-blogging to be able to chat with subscribers, new methods for authentication in addition to password: one-time authorization code (OTAC), magic-link, passkey, multi-factor authentication (MFA), admins multiple admins step-down as admin multi-tenant support, serving a different domain, similar to how DNS MX records except uses host-meta, etc. (This list is not prioritized. Being near to the top or bottom of the list is not meaningful.) Again, these are currently in the PostFreely backlog. We are still discussing them. The roadmap is not finalized yet. But hopefully this gives you some sense of where PostFreely is likely going. If you would like to affect the PostFreely roadmap, please post in the PostFreely forum: https://flamewar.social/c/postfreely Development Work Mathew ( @[email protected] ) and I ( @[email protected] ) have been doing clean-up work of the PostFreely source-code. This type of work is necessary to prepare for adding features. Mathew and I had a conversation about how much we want PostFreely to diverge from the WriteFreely code-base. There are trade-offs both ways. There are advantages to keeping it similar — such as being able to pull-in upstream changes from WriteFreely. BUT — it does put constraints on us — and limits how much we can improve things. We are still undecided about this. Mathew has been focusing on CommonMark and Markdown component of PostFreely. He has a plan for how to add post previewing for CommonMark Markdown, and for how to make CommonMark the default format. I have been focusing on password-resets and implementing (parts of) the Mastodon client-server API for PostFreely. Feedback We would love to hear from you.
