There’s been a Russian youth uprising, with tens of thousands of kids writing to say they want to emigrate because Roblox has been blocked.
Sydney (AFP) – Online discussion site Reddit launched a legal challenge Friday to Australia’s social media ban for under-16s, just days after the landmark law came into effect. This week, the country became the first to ban young teen accounts from a raft of popular apps and sites including TikTok, YouTube and Instagram. Tech companies that fail to purge Australia-based users younger than 16 now face fines of Aus$49.5 million (US$33 million). Court filings by US-based Reddit challenged the validity of the law that “infringes the implied freedom of political communication”, calling for a review by Australia’s High Court. The filing also argued that the company should be exempt from the government’s list of banned platforms, on the grounds that it is an online discussion forum aimed at adults. “Unlike other platforms included under this law, the vast majority of Redditors are adults, we don’t market or target advertising to children under 18,” a Reddit statement said. “Simply put, users under 16 are not a substantial market segment for Reddit and we don’t intend them to be.” Pointing to the site’s age rating of “17+” on the Apple App Store, Reddit said the best way to verify age was at the app store level rather than requiring each platform to carry out checks. A spokesperson said there were serious privacy concerns associated with platforms verifying age, with the collection of personal data creating a risk of leaks or hacks. The government was also inconsistent in selecting which platforms should be banned, the spokesperson argued, with some apps with large under-16 user groups exempt. Those include Roblox, Pinterest and WhatsApp, but the government has stressed that the list remains under review. Reddit criticised the law as “missing the mark on protecting young people online”. “While we will comply with this law, we have a responsibility to share our perspective and see that it is reviewed by the courts,” Reddit said. The sprawling forum site made up of thousands of niche communities had previously warned on the eve of the December 10 ban that the government’s move was “legally erroneous”. It is not the only tech firm to condemn the ban – Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, also raised concerns that teens could flock to darker, less regulated corners of the internet seeking connection with peers. An Australian government spokesperson said Friday authorities were “on the side of Australian parents and kids, not platforms”. “We will stand firm to protect young Australians from experiencing harm on social media.” Reddit’s case is separate from one filed by an internet rights group last month, which is also seeking to overturn the law on the grounds it is an “unfair” assault on freedom of speech. Australia’s ban is being closely watched worldwide, with New Zealand and Malaysia mulling similar restrictions. The government concedes the ban will be far from perfect at the outset and canny teenagers will find ways to slip through the cracks. But authorities say unprecedented measures are needed to protect children from “predatory algorithms” filling phone screens with bullying, sex and violence.
Russia announced on Dec. 3 that it had banned the platform over child-safety issues.
Sydney (AFP) – Australia banned under-16s from social media in a world-first crackdown on Wednesday, declaring it was time to “take back control” from formidable tech giants. A raft of popular apps and websites – Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and X among them – face US$33 million fines if they fail to purge Australia-based users younger than 16. Australia becomes one of the first nations to push back so forcefully against tech companies with immense political power, in a move other countries are looking at closely. “Enough is enough,” Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said. "It is one of the biggest social and cultural changes that our nation has faced. “We will take back control.” The government says unprecedented measures are needed to protect children from “predatory algorithms” filling phone screens with bullying, sex and violence. The laws came into effect after midnight local time across Australia. Hundreds of thousands of adolescents woke up to find themselves locked out of apps they once scrolled through for hours each day. Bianca Navarro, 10, was already counting the years until she could log in again to YouTube. “It will be pretty sad because I have six years until I can watch it,” she told AFP. Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, Snapchat and Reddit are forbidden from creating or keeping accounts belonging to users in Australia under 16. Streaming platforms Kick and Twitch are also on the government’s blacklist, as are Threads and X. The ban has been hailed as a godsend for parents sick of seeing children stuck to their phones. Mia Bannister blamed social media for the suicide of her teenage son Ollie, who killed himself last year after he was bullied online. He was also being served endless dieting videos that fuelled an eating disorder, she said. “I’m sick of the social media giants shirking responsibility,” she told AFP in the lead-up to the ban. “The problem is we hand them a phone and we hand them the greatest weapon we could hand them.” A growing body of research suggests too much time online is taking a toll on teen wellbeing. But it is hard to draw firm conclusions that separate phone use from other lifestyle factors, experts say. Father-of-five Dany Elachi said the restrictions were a long-overdue “line in the sand”. “We need to err on the side of caution before putting anything addictive in the hands of children,” he told AFP. Tech-savvy teenagers the world over have taken an interest in Australia’s measures. “Students nowadays, they are really distracted,” said Nigerian high-schooler Mitchelle Okinedo, 15. “Social media today is very important for expressing yourself, no matter how old you are,” said Santiago Ramirez Rojas, 16, from Mexico City. YouTube, Meta and other social media giants have lined up to condemn the ban. Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, said children were already flocking to darker online spaces. “We’ve consistently raised concerns that this poorly developed law could push teens to less regulated platforms or apps,” the US-based firm told AFP in a statement. “We’re now seeing those concerns become reality.” Elon Musk’s X told young users the ban was “not our choice”. “It’s what the Australian law requires.” Lesser-known chat and image-sharing apps Lemon8 and yope, which are not currently listed in the social media ban, have shot up the download charts in Australia. While most platforms have begrudgingly agreed to comply, for now, legal challenges are in the wind. Online discussion site Reddit said Tuesday it could not confirm local media reports that said it would seek to overturn the ban in Australia’s High Court. An Australian internet rights group has launched its own bid to have teenagers re-instated to social media. Australia’s efforts will be closely watched by all those worried about the dangers of social media. New Zealand and Malaysia are mulling similar restrictions. But platforms face the threat of Aus$49.5 million (US$33 million) fines if they fail to take “reasonable steps” to stop this happening. It remains to be seen how Australia’s internet safety regulator will interpret what counts as reasonable. Social media companies bear the sole responsibility for checking users are 16 or older. Some platforms say they will use AI tools to estimate ages based on photos, while young users may also choose to prove their age by uploading government ID. Which platforms fall under the ban continues to be debated. Popular apps and websites such as Roblox, Pinterest and WhatsApp are currently exempt – but the government has stressed that the list remains under review. Most social media platforms already require users be at least 13, a legacy of US laws setting the minimum age for data collection without parental consent.

As a long time gamer, playing Roblox with my niece made me feel old for the first time. I have no idea why the hell kids play that game so much outside of the social media aspect with their friends. It really seems like they are tapping into the addictions of children. I’ve wasted money on game DLC before, but the amount of crap kids buy on Roblox is insane. I don’t think parents really know what they are giving them when they buy gift cards for it. If it makes them happy, okay fine, but I really think it’s something psychological that the company is taking advantage of. Rant over. I agree with everyone else. Something is about to go down. I hope they all take severance and leave. Three days is still better than what I get… which is like 20 WFH days a year… but ultimatums are never a good sign.
Knowing Roblox users, it was probably a free and accessible asset to repurpose.
Lol? The Roblox Intifada
edit: many, not most Based on a few quick searches, here’s what I came up with. You can tell that I got pretty bored once I got to the Lanthanide series and beyond. The ones without “:” are the ones I didn’t check, as I doubt there’s any software called “Dysprosium” and “Roentgenium”, but I would love to be proven wrong! One thing of note, I included a few racehorses are named after elements (most of which from the 1800s, which is interesting) 1 - H - Hydrogen: open-source drum machine 2 - He - Helium: Chromium-based browser, “Helium10” is e-commerce software 3 - Li - Lithium: “Li3”, formerly “lithium”, is a PHP web framework, optimization mod for Minecraft 4 - Be - Beryllium: proprietary lathe software written in Python 5 - B - Boron: N/A? 6 - C - Carbon: C-based API developed by Apple to port classic Mac apps to MacOS X, programming language developed by Google to be interoperable with C++, “Karbon” is some accounting management software 7 - N - Nitrogen: Financial planning software (previously “Riskalyze”). Funnily enough, there is also a racehorse called “Nitrogen” which, according to Wikipedia, was the 2024 “Canadian Champion Two-Year-Old Filly”! 8 - O - Oxygen: default font in KDE, “OxygenOS” is the skin of Android in (global) OnePlus phones. “Oxygen XML editor” is self-explanatory. Again, there is a racehorse called “Oxygen” which Wikipedia says was regarded as the “leading two-year-old filly in the South of England in 1830”! 9 - F - Fluorine: some productivity app 10 - Ne - Neon: game engine, music visualisation software, “KDE Neon” is a distro developed by KDE 11 - Na - Sodium: Minecraft optimization mod, MMO game for PS3, and interestingly enough, another racehorse! 12 - Mg - Magnesium: port of the “Sodium” Minecraft optimization mod for Forge 13 - Al - Aluminium: Google’s “Aluminium OS” (replacement for ChromeOS), various software designed for manufacturing/designing aluminium parts 14 - Si - Silicon: “Silicon IDE” is self explanatory, “Silicon Labs” is a Japanese technology company, Apple’s processors are known as “Apple Silicon”, you of course have “Silicon Valley” 15 - P - Phosphorus: some IoT enterprise solution. This is also yet another racehorse, which won the 1837 Epsom Derby despite having a leg injury! 16 - S - Sulfur/Sulphur: a modern old-school action-adventure game, codename for Fedora 9. “Sulphur Nimbus: Hel’s Elixir” is a game on itch.io where you control a hippogriff, interesting! 17 - Cl - Chlorine: library to interact with OpenCL devices 18 - Ar - Argon: CAD modelling software, tool for developing Roblox games. “Argon2” is a cryptographic key derivation function that won the 2015 Password Hashing Competition 19 - K - Potassium: “Kalium” (where we get the symbol “K” from!) is the name of a web framework that handle asynchronous microservices 20 - Ca - Calcium: digital health software, web calendar by “Brown Bear Software” 21 - Sc - Scandium: Automation tool for software testing. being good at playing games doesn’t make you informed about the world i know a kid who kicks ass at roblox but i’m not gonma ask her about astrophysics
Some of the Roblox players are growing up and they don’t want them to stop using Roblox for literally everything
The games you listed all work on Linux. Roblox sometimes has problems but currently works. You need Sober to launch Roblox. With Minecraft it depends on the edition. Java Edition works great. Bedrock Edition is rocky. The Windows version doesn’t work at all but the Android version does through the Bedrock Launcher. You’d have to buy it on Google Play. But if he plays Java Edition he’s golden.
"Roblox allowed Ethan to turn off the parental controls " If true, this is very damning for Roblox. Parents can’t be everywhere all the time checking what they already set up, that’s unrealistic.
This is the dumbest take on what’s happening. The Quest 3 is better than the Pro and it comes out next month. We don’t need the Pro anymore. Some of y’all need to use some critical thinking. Roblox also just recently got a lot of attention towards it from Meta; it’s not a coincidence these were Roblox devs that the Pros were given to.
Most games are games with a chat feature. ROBLOX IS A CHATROOM WITH A GAMES FEATURE. It’s a chatroom where 60% of the user base is under the age of 16 and 40% is under 12. Grooming happens on Roblox. Predators move that conversation to places Discord which is where the crimes happen. I am an adult who helped a kid that was the victim of online predators. When talking to your kids about online safety, come up with a plan just like you might for a fire. Make sure they know what to do when something makes them uncomfortable and make sure you identify a 3rd party adult that you trust and your kid feels safe talking to, maybe a close family friend or an aunt/uncle. That last part is how I got involved. I don’t have my own kids, but I knew a kid that felt more comfortable talking to me about that stuff than to his parents.
security is my priority WhatsApp and Roblox come on, a low-effort troll still needs some effort.
