WebSpace - Web Apps, Websites And PWAs Manager!

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/48011911 I found this very promising app that looks like it can be an alternative to Ferdium, Rambox, Franz, Hamsket. WebSpace is an app that brings websites and web apps together in one organized, streamlined interface. Any web app you can think off can be used in WebSpace in its own web instance instead of your main web browser. Basically it is a web browser but for web apps you use often and may want running in the background. For use degoogled users who use website, web apps, PWAs over native apps, this makes using these services much easer. WebSpace also adds many privacy features such as ad blocking and filtering, cookie isolation, and more. Also it is written in Flutter! Meaning this could become available on desktop in the future! One app, one codebase for all major OSes! Check it out and contribute!

I have everything I could want!

Arab spring? Yeah it had some pretty bad outcomes in some places (Syria) but go look at the list of outcomes, from total overthrow of a despot, to democratisation of some states, and major government concessions and strengthening of people-power precedents in others. The Madian revolt in Ukraine resulted in the overthrow of a despotic Russian lackey and move towards proper democracy and European alignment.

My brain temporarily forgot how skirts work and gave me a mini heart attack

So, I was just sitting here, minding my own business and feeling pretty happy, when out of nowhere I felt a sudden breeze between my legs. For a split second, I completely forgot I was wearing a skirt AND that I am literally inside my own house. I panicked SO hard. I genuinely thought that classic nightmare where you accidentally leave the house without pants had finally become a reality. My heart skipped a beat, but nope, just my skirt doing skirt things.

Help with my first ever Shader in Godot

Preamble: I’ve been trying to write my first shader and have been stuck for several days now. I chose this shader because I thought it would be an easy first, but I’ve been down a few rabbit holes and I’m no longer sure what is the best approach. I did my best to organize what I’ve tried and the problems/questions I have with each approach. Sorry if this is a long one… I’m building a 2D platformer game and have made some really simple blank white tiles with black/gray borders to start off with and test my game. 32x32 px tiles, viewable [here](https://imgur.com/a/Y9pPH3c. I wanted to build a shader on my TileMapLayer so that on the bottom and left sides they have a bit more grey. My thinking is for any white pixel, if there is a black pixel 1 or 2 pixels left or below the current one, make COLOR be grey. Attempt 1: My first approach was following this post: https://forum.godotengine.org/t/how-to-check-color-of-adjacent-pixels-in-fragment-shader/27296/2 I got pretty close with this code: shader_type canvas_item; const vec4 BLACK = vec4(0, 0, 0, 1); const vec4 WHITE = vec4(1, 1, 1, 1); const vec2 LEFT_ONE = vec2(-1, 0); const vec2 LEFT_TWO = vec2(-2, 0); const vec2 DOWN_ONE = vec2(0, 1); const vec2 DOWN_TWO = vec2(0, 2); void fragment() { vec2 pixel_size = 1.0 / vec2(textureSize(TEXTURE, 0)); if (texture(TEXTURE, UV).rgba == WHITE) { if (texture(TEXTURE, UV + LEFT_ONE * pixel_size).rgba == BLACK || texture(TEXTURE, UV + LEFT_TWO * pixel_size).rgba == BLACK || texture(TEXTURE, UV + DOWN_ONE * pixel_size).rgba == BLACK || texture(TEXTURE, UV + DOWN_TWO * pixel_size).rgba == BLACK) { COLOR = vec4(0.0, 1.0, 0.0, 1.0); // currently green for debugging } } } but the issue is that TEXTURE isn’t my TileMapLayer, it’s the tileset image itself (as in, the one linked above). This led to some weird issues, ex: https://imgur.com/a/WNlGpJe. My first question: This approach could work, if only I could just have the texture of the TileMapLayer itself. Is there any way that’s possible? Attempt 2: It was suggested in the Godot Discord for me to try a Screen-Reading Shader. No matter what I try here, my screen_texture is always from before my TileMapLayer is drawn. This means I can’t detect the colors of pixels on the TileMapLayer since screen_texture doesn’t have it yet. I can verify it with this code: shader_type canvas_item; const vec4 WHITE = vec4(1, 1, 1, 1); uniform sampler2D screen_texture : hint_screen_texture, repeat_disable, filter_nearest; void fragment() { if (COLOR.rgba == WHITE) { // This is done to leave my borders alone and only draw on the white. This works. COLOR = texture(screen_texture, SCREEN_UV); } } This makes all the white pixels effectively transparent. If screen_texture had my TileMapLayer, I’d expect the pixels to remain white. I’ve tried various attempts at converting my above code to use screen_texture and SCREEN_UV but I figure if I cannot get screen_texture to see the TileMapLayer, none of that code will work. 2a: I’ve read online about BackBorderCopy, but I’ve been unable to get any good results with one. I’ve tried it as a parent, child, and before/after sibling of my TileMapLayer, with Rect mode and Viewport mode, and while it does make some things happen, it never makes it so screen_texture gets my TileMapLayer’s pixels. Questions: Is BackBorderCopy what I need? Am I using it wrong? I think it needs to be a parent of my TileMapLayer, but I’ve had no luck no matter what. It seems to give the same results . 2b: I’ve tried adding my TileMapLayer as a child of a CanvasGroup, and putting the shader on the CanvasGroup. Somehow this has the same issue where it doesn’t have the pixels from the TileMapLayer, but with an added bonus of making everything a big white square. Is there any validity in this approach? 2c: I’ve tried putting my TileMapLayer in a SubViewport and adding a Sprite2D with a ViewportTexture and putting the shader on the Sprite2D. Maybe this will work, I don’t know, but I have way too many issues trying to line things up so that my tiles all show on screen and also are in the same place that they are supposed to be that I gave up.] This approach seems too heavy-handed. If anyone thinks it will work I’d be happy to elaborate on how I had problems making things fit.

Lemmy.zip 3rd Birthday Giveaway!

Hello all! To celebrate Lemmy.zip turning 3 years old, we are once again hosting a small giveaway to say thank you for being here ❤️ We’re giving away 3 prizes to 3 lucky winners. This will be 1 x £25 Steam gifts, and 2 x £10 Steam gifts. The giveaway will be open for 48 hours from 18:00 UTC on the 10th June 2026, to 18:00 UTC on the 12th June 2026. This thread will unlock at 18:00 UTC :) You can enter by making a comment in this very thread! Your comment can say or be absolutely anything you want (within reason!) Once you’ve made a comment, you should get a message back from ZippyBot confirming you’ve entered and a ticket number. For transparency, at the end of this we’ll publish the entry list and ticket numbers. You must be a Lemmy.zip OR a Piefed.zip user to enter (comments from anyone else will be ignored!) and you will need a Steam account and be happy to send me your username so I can gift you the value via Steam. Your Lemmy.zip/Piefed.zip account must have been created before the 9th June 2026. At the end of the giveaway, I’ll lock the thread and Zippy will pull three random entries. The first username pulled will win the first prize (£25), and the other two users will win the other prizes (£10). (EDIT: Thanks to @[email protected] there is now a 4th place prize of £10!) I’ve put a few FAQs in this spoiler tag if you want to know more: FAQs - PLEASE READ! ::: spoiler FAQs Q) Can anyone enter? A) You must be a lemmy.zip user or a Piefed.zip user, have a steam account, and your account must have been created before 9th June 2026 Q) Can I have a giftcard for a different platform, i.e. xbox or playstation? A) Unfortunately not. Those platforms (to my knowledge) don’t allow me to purchase a giftcard in the UK and you activate it anywhere in the world. Steam allows currency conversion on gifts. Q) How quickly will I get my prize? A) Steam requires that someone must be on a user’s friend list for 3 days before giftcards can be sent, therefore I will share my Steam profile with the winners (or vice versa) and after 3 days of being friends on Steam, I will send the gift over. (Unless you live in the UK, in which case I can send you a code within 24 hours) Q) I think my entry was valid, but I didn’t get a reply from Zippybot with my ticket number. What do I do? A) Send me a message asap! You can try commenting again too. Q) Are user donations funding this? A) No, just making it clear here that the donations to Lemmy.zip and PIefed.zip only ever go towards the server and Lemmy.zip infrastructure. The funds for this are coming from my wallet :) Q) How does Zippy select the winners? A) Zippy randomly shuffles the list of entrants in the DB. It then randomly shuffles the list again in Python. Then it randomly selects 3 winners from that double shuffled list. Q) What if something goes wrong? A) If for any reason something goes wrong during the giveaway, it will be paused until it can be resumed. If too much time lapses, the giveaway will be restarted. :::

LTT - I Don't Think I Can Go Back To Windows...

Final summary verdict after testing out Linux for over a month. After this it looks like Luke and Elijah will be switching over to Linux as their daily driver, with an occasional Windows boot to handle some outliers. Linus will go back to Windows (debloated as much as possible) but he could see himself making the switch soon.

Engine auto-off

I was thinking about this while driving my hybrid (Hyundai Santa Fe) after watching Technology Connections (and/or Connextras) video about hybrid powertrains. My car stops its engine when it’s not needed. But then it starts back up so smoothly? How? There’s no cranking. It just goes, already at matching revs. But then I realized that an electric motor is a starter. Duh. Really recommend the videos (and channels) for anyone who hasn’t seen it yet. The hybrid power train really is an amazingly simple thing. Oh, regen braking? Just as I had thought, it’s basically engine braking. Except when you’re engine braking in an ice car, that energy is all wasted as heat and noise…in electric/hybrid, your motor turns into an Eaton Crank Radio, powered by the momentum of the wheels. I used to drive ever-so-gently trying to minimize using the gas engine. But he made it so obvious that that’s the wrong way to do it. All the energy that the car uses comes from gas, and it either gets used to push the car forward, or to recharge the batteries…and charging the batteries is a conversion step with its own implicit losses.

Lemmy.zip turns 3 today! 🎂

3 years ago today Lemmy.zip was created, and what a journey it has been! I never thought it would grow beyond a few users, and that it would probably crash and burn after I inevitably broke something. Amazingly, we’re still here and now the 3rd most active Lemmy server! To celebrate, I’ve pulled together a recap of everyone’s time on Lemmy.zip - you can view yours at recap.lemmy.zip! I want to say a big thank you to the admin team v4ld1z, gazby, and INeedMana for helping me to keep things running, and to all the moderators who take take the time to build and foster their communities. I also want to thank you, the reader, for being part of Lemmy.zip. Without you, this would all be rather pointless! Demigodrick

Momentum Builds to Rein In Domestic Spying Law — Whether or Not Bill Pulte Survives as Intel Chief

For years, centrist Democrats like Sen. Mark Warner of Virginia dismissed claims that a key National Security Agency surveillance program could be abused to spy on Americans. Then President Donald Trump tapped Bill Pulte — an unqualified housing official accused of misusing sensitive databases to pursue the president’s political vendettas — to oversee the nation’s spy agencies. That got the centrist Democrats’ attention. Warner, who serves as ranking member of the Select Committee on Intelligence, voted with every Senate Democrat except for Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman last week against advancing the renewal of the NSA program authorized by Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, or FISA. In the face of pushback from Democrats and some Republicans, Trump declined to back down on his choice. Instead, he said Tuesday that he was moving up the effective date of Pulte’s appointment to lead the Office of the Director of National Intelligence to June 19. Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., a longtime critic of Section 702, said that there’s unprecedented support for reforming the law. “I have been doing this a while,” Wyden, who is on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, told The Intercept on Tuesday. “I am the longest serving member of SSCI in history, and I’ve never had this kind of bipartisan support.” That doesn’t, however, mean that reform efforts hinge on Pulte’s political fate. Though the announcement narrowed the odds that the spying program will be renewed before it expires Friday, the fracas over Pulte has revealed a deep divide among Democrats that could keep the issue alive. Centrists such as Warner would still vote to renew Section 702 if Pulte is sacked. Other Democrats, like Wyden, say that Pulte’s selection only exacerbated long-standing issues such as the lack of a warrant requirement for searching through the NSA’s data. “Firing Pulte doesn’t fix the problem,” Wyden told reporters on Tuesday. “There have to be reforms.” Section 702 has been the subject of an intense behind-the-scenes squabble since Congress passed a short-term, 45-day extension of the program in April. [ Related Mike Johnson Used Crypto Catnip to Get Freedom Caucus Support for Domestic Spy Law](https://theintercept.com/2026/04/29/mike-johnson-crypto-freedom-caucus-fisa-surveillance/) The law allows the FBI and other agencies, including ODNI, to pore through Americans’ communications collected abroad without a warrant. Ostensibly, there are safeguards in place to prevent those agencies from targeting specific Americans — but courts have repeatedly found widespread violations of those rules. For years, civil liberties advocates have sought to create a warrant requirement that would require the FBI and other agencies to go to a judge to read through Americans’ communications. That idea has proven a nonstarter for defenders of Section 702 such as Warner, who argue that it would create insurmountable logistical obstacles for agents hoping to prevent terror attacks. Warner has long allied with Republicans to push back on the warrant proposal. Compromise Flop Since April, a bipartisan coalition of civil liberties supporters in Congress has managed to block a long-term reauthorization of Section 702. In recent weeks, Warner helped craft what was billed as a compromise proposal intended to win over enough of the critics to allow the passage of a long-term renewal of the law. Then, Trump said on June 3 that he would appoint Pulte to serve as temporary director of national intelligence, to replace departing chief Tulsi Gabbard. The announcement immediately soured centrist Democrats’ plans to help secure passage of a FISA extension. Pulte, whose net worth is at least $190 million, is a private equity firm founder who became a minor internet celebrity for giving away money on Twitter. Then Trump appointed him last year to serve as director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency and chair of mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. In those roles, Pulte helped launch housing fraud probes of Trump nemeses including Sen. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., and Democratic New York Attorney General Letitia James. He is being investigated by the Government Accountability Office for allegedly misusing confidential government databases for information on the president’s foes. “There were already sensitive negotiations that were ongoing,” House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., told PBS NewsHour on Tuesday. “And then Donald Trump chose to elevate this partisan political hack, Bill Pulte, into this position of great sensitivity, effectively tossing a hand grenade in the midst of these negotiations as we approach the deadline to potentially renew surveillance authority.” The compromise deal floated by Warner and others had never impressed privacy advocates. They said the changes it made to the law mostly layered on more layers of internal oversight, which would not stop a determined Trump flunky from abusing the NSA’s spying powers. Even calling it a “deal” was misleading, said Elizabeth Goitein, senior director of the liberty and national security program at the Brennan Center for Justice, a nonprofit working on law and policy. “The members who drafted this legislation, basically Trump allies plus Sen. Warner — all longtime opponents of 702 reform who are in complete alignment with each other on the fundamental points of debate — they were the members who drafted the legislation,” she said on a conference call Tuesday. “Members who support reform were shut out.” Push and Pulte While Warner and other Democratic supporters of the program voted against putting its renewal on the Senate agenda last week, that boiled down to a repudiation of Pulte instead of a sudden change of heart on the program. “Pulte is the major stumbling block for people like myself and Mark Warner, who are generally supportive because of the importance of the program,” Sen. Angus King, an independent who caucuses with the Democrats, told The Intercept on Tuesday. “But we can’t in good conscience hand the keys to the country’s most significant car to a teenager.” In the Republican caucus, a faction of members with libertarian tendencies support adding a warrant requirement. Some longtime supporters of the program, on the other hand, have dismissed the significance of Pulte’s appointment. “He’s an interim guy, he’ll be there for weeks to a couple months, so I don’t understand why it’s a big issue anyway,” said Sen. James Lankford, R-Okla., who serves on the Intelligence Committee. Privacy advocates are largely aghast at the appointment of Pulte, but they hope the expiration of Section 702 will create space for reform. They were heartened on Tuesday when Jeffries gave some of his strongest statements yet in support of overhauling the law. [ Related Democrats Might Save Mike Johnson’s Push to Give Trump Domestic Spying Power](https://theintercept.com/2026/03/23/trump-domestic-spying-fisa-702-democrats/) “Donald Trump needs to withdraw his decision to elevate Bill Pulte,” Jeffries said on PBS. “That’s a starting point, not an ending point. And then we can see if we can responsibly get to a place where there are enough reforms built into the law to provide guardrails and protect the American people.” Reformers have a smorgasbord of reform proposals. Wyden wants to create a warrant requirement not only for searches of NSA data, but also one for searches of sensitive information available on the open market, such as location tracking from commercial data brokers. Wyden said he senses a rare opportunity, pointing to support from Republicans such as Sen. Mike Lee of Utah, and said, “Both of us have bipartisan bills with almost all of the provisions we’re talking about.” The post Momentum Builds to Rein In Domestic Spying Law — Whether or Not Bill Pulte Survives as Intel Chief appeared first on The Intercept. Algorithm visualizes how cells 'talk' to one another across tissue and time

People communicate with each other, sometimes face to face, sometimes with a text message or phone call. Cells also communicate with each other, sometimes by touching and sometimes by sending signals across space and time. But while texts and phone calls can be traced to figure out who is talking to whom, determining which cell is talking to which is exceedingly difficult—until now. cross-posted from: https://lemmy.ml/post/48568140 Duration - 0:55 In recent days, the Cuban United Nations Association (ACNU) warned of the humanitarian consequences of a possible U.S. military attack. ACNU President Norma Goicochea said that “the U.S. government knows…Cuba is not an extraordinary threat” to the United States or any other country. She also warned that a military intervention would have devastating consequences for civilians, including children, women and the elderly. “Cubans have the right to be happy. We have the right to live in peace. Ultimately, we have the right to live.”
