Privacy Advocates Raise Alarm Over Online Age Verification Provisions as House Passes KIDS Act

Opponents of a bill that is purported to protect children online said Monday night, after the legislation passed in the US House, that laws are “urgently” needed to stop Big Tech companies from preying on kids’ vulnerabilities. “The KIDS Act is not that piece of legislation,” said Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.), who was one of 117 lawmakers who voted against the Kids Internet and Digital Safety (KIDS) Act, which passed with 267 votes, while 47 members of Congress did not vote. The bipartisan bill requires online platforms to use new safety features and parental controls, restricts the use of minors’ personal data to target ads, and establishes new restrictions for AI chatbots and online games. But ahead of the bill’s passage, the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) was among the opponents raising alarm about other provisions “buried inside the KIDS Act” that would “push online services to verify all users’ ages, require government-directed moderation policies for online speech, and even create new rules about private and encrypted communications.” The legislation, drawing from portions of 14 different online safety bills, “is a mess, with different age-gating schemes for different services, using different standards,” wrote EFF senior policy analyst Joe Mullin. “It’s a lot of complexity, and a lot of legal risk. Faced with that, many companies will conclude that the safest option is restrictive age-checking practices across their entire platforms.” As Mullin explained: Throughout the KOSA section of the legislation, special protections, controls, messaging settings, and parental tools are required whenever a website or app “knows or should have known” a user is a child (defined in the bill as anyone under 13) or a teen (defined as anyone between 13 and 16 years old). The problem is a website operator doesn’t need actual knowledge that a user is a minor to get in legal trouble. It applies when a platform “knows or should have known” a user’s age—a low, negligence-style standard of knowledge. If an online service gets it wrong, it’s going to be up to courts and regulators to decide, after the fact, if an online service “should” have known a user was 16. To try to avoid liability, services will have to determine which users are teenagers and which are not. Most won’t be able to simply trust their users. They’ll have to collect more information about age, before any lawsuit or government action arises. Some companies may respond by requesting driver’s licenses or passports. Others will rely on age-estimation systems that attempt to guess users’ ages by looking at existing activity or doing facial scans. At The Intercept, Caitlin Vogus of the Freedom of the Press Foundation and Aliya Bhatia of the Center for Democracy and Technology’s Free Expression Project warned ahead of the bill’s passage that while the legislation is ostensibly meant to protect children, the age verification requirement could impact all users’ ability to access social media platforms without revealing their identities—chilling anonymous speech and threatening would-be whistleblowers. “Threats to online anonymity harm everyone, but one group is often overlooked: journalists and the sources who talk to them,” wrote Vogus and Bhatia. “Age verification requirements will help the Trump administration carry out its vendetta against the press by creating new avenues to identify journalists’ confidential sources.” While the KIDS Act says it won’t require online platforms to collect government IDs for age verification, they said, “at least some platforms will likely choose this route to comply with the law or offer it as a fallback approach when other methods inevitably fail.” Former Republican congressman Justin Amash, a libertarian, accused the lawmakers who voted “yes” on the legislation of betraying “the Constitution and the American people.” Other opponents of the legislation, including Jayapal, argued that the bill would allow tech companies to continue targeting children with algorithms that send harmful content to the youngest users. The legislation omits a “duty of care” provision that was included in the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA), which was passed by the US Senate in 2024—a requirement that tech firms "exercise reasonable care” to prevent harms to children. Jayapal noted that the bill, which faces an uphill battle in the Senate, leaves “suicide, depression, addiction, substance use disorders, and eating disorders from the list of harms” that tech companies like Meta must address in their algorithms. The “duty of care” provision has been criticized as too vague by several digital rights groups, while some child safety groups said its omission in the KIDS Act would “let Big Tech off the hook.” “We have seen time and again that these corporations cannot be trusted to put children’s safety over their own profit margins,” said Jayapal. “We cannot keep exposing our kids to platforms that are either completely indifferent to their safety or a direct threat to it.” The KIDS Act, Jayapal said, also includes provisions “that do not do enough to actually address the harms of” artificial intelligence. “I voted no,” said Jayapal, “because we have a real opportunity to pass bipartisan legislation that holds these companies to not just be transparent about the harms and mitigate them, but to actually prevent them.” From Common Dreams via This RSS Feed.

Foreign nationals attempt to fly to Europe with rare cacti from southern Brazil

Agents from the Brazilian Federal Police found an unusual cargo with four Czech nationals stopped in February at São Paulo’s Guarulhos International Airport: 214 cactus specimens and envelopes containing cactus seeds. The material was hidden in beer cans, paper bags and even inside one man’s shoes, according to the pending court case. The plants belonged to seven species, all native to the state of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil. In a report signed by cactus expert Rosana Singer, a biologist at Porto Alegre’s Botanical Garden, two of those species are listed as critically endangered: Parodia nothorauschii and Parodia neohorstii. Four others are endangered, including Gymnocalycium horstii and Frailea curvispina. The Czechs — identified in court documents as Jaroslav Vich, Karel Slajs, Vladimir Bradna and Vladimir Sorma — arrived from Montevideo and were about to board a flight to Vienna. They carried a map of Rio Grande do Sul and a printed itinerary with phrases translated from Czech into Portuguese and Spanish, such as “Do you know where small cacti grow?,” “Are cacti growing here?” and “Sorry. I don’t know if this is private!” The group was detained for one day but is prohibited from leaving Brazil by a court order, which also requested a forensic analysis of their phones. The travelers are now under investigation. Cacti from endangered species endemic to Rio Grande do Sul were seized at Guarulhos International Airport in São Paulo. Image: IBAMA Inspection. Not true, I love and respect all my friends and humanity in general. That being said I’d beat the servos off a clanker any day. I’m waiting for the day someone brings a fucking tin-skin on set to take some zitty PA’s job. I’ll be the first person smashing it to death in front of a 4K film camera. Robots have no place in the workforce until all of humanity is reasonably taken care of and don’t need to work. Until then all they’re doing is taking livelihoods away from people. That being said I never choose the evil option in games, neutral or good always, I do feel bad for NPCs.

Honestly, I think half the reason he bulldozed it was that Michelle Obama.and Hillar Clinton would have worked in there. Probably had their photos up and such too. He knows his First Lady is a useless turd so this way he does not have to be reminded of these other “evil women” that came before.

A little bit of socialism, as a treat

Oh yeah i know, I was born in the south close to the time you moved there. James Dobson was more popular with my parents in comparison to the other Christian’s around me but both those motherfuckers were everywhere and doubly so in any overtly religious place of event. Shit I attended See You at the Poll and Prayer Breakfasts before school and their hands were all up in it. Crazy to think about it retrospect because it’s so obviously brainwashing and they weren’t even really hiding it from us. Our parents signed us so we could be brainwashed, in fears that if we weren’t we would “stray from the lords path” and be damned forever! I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that JBS laid down a lot of ground work that both the Moral Majority and the Heritage Foundation built upon it and helped the societal cancer metastasis further, into the tea party and then subsequently the Alt Right/MAGA. There’s a few other players(Epstein) that weren’t necessarily in cahoots with each other that were all trying to push things further to the right and create the hellscape we see before us!

Wait. One of the mullvad founders funding a small Nazi party in Örebro has made national news in the US? The fuck? I hadn’t even heard of the party until now and I live in the neighbouring county. Edit: holy shit, they’ve used the money well. They’ve grown significantly in the polls, from being a straggler 2022 to being the second largest in recent polls. Fuck.

Progressives Call On NYC Council to Expel Member Paladino for Saying CIA Should 'Neutralize' DSA Organizers

I mean… “There was a time in our history, not too long ago, when the CIA/FBI would’ve made sure unabashed revolutionaries like this were neutralized one way or another,” said Paladino (R-19). “In fact, that was basically the entire point of having them.” Paladino appeared to be referring to the FBI’s Counterintelligence Program (COINTELPRO), which surveilled, infiltrated, and tried to disrupt groups and movements that fought for civil rights and against the US war in Vietnam. COINTELPRO was involved in the 1969 raid in Chicago in which police killed Black Panther Party leaders Fred Hampton and Mark Clark. She is right… It doesn’t mean it was OK, it definitely doesn’t mean we should keep doing it… But the most incorrect part of what she said, was implying Trump doesn’t have them doing the same shit right now, it’ll just take a while before we hear about it. The CIA is 100% overthrowing a democracy right now somewhere.

Crater Lake is a volcanic crater lake in southern Oregon, formed around 7,700 years ago after the collapse of Mount Mazama. It is the deepest lake in the United States, with a maximum depth of 1,949 feet (594 m). Sacred to the Klamath people, who call it Giiwas, Crater Lake is the centerpiece of Crater Lake National Park and has a deep blue color and exceptional water clarity. It has no inflow or outflow, the waters being replaced every 150 years through evaporation, rain and snowfall. Its best-known landmarks include Wizard Island and Phantom Ship, while the surrounding park offers hiking, fishing and winter recreation. Photographer: WolfmanSF CC BY-SA 3.0

A new KEV Catalog built from real-world exploitation data !

We are excited to share the result of a fruitful collaboration with The Shadowserver Foundation: a new Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) Catalog (BCP-07 compliant) built directly from their global honeypot telemetry. Most KEV catalogs tell you what is being exploited. This one is grounded in observed exploitation attempts captured across Shadowserver’s worldwide honeypot sensor network. When a vulnerability is exploited against one of their honeypots, it becomes an attributable, structured GCVE-EU BCP-07 KEV assertion, complete with evidence typing (honeypot), exploitation signals (in_the_wild_attempts), and timestamps indicating when exploitation was first and last observed. A huge thank-you to the Shadowserver team, and especially to Piotr Kijewski, for their support and collaboration.

Now that you mention it, if my parent cheated with someone their age, I could probably see myself doing something morally grey in response, too. I have an ex whose dad cheated on her mom while her mom was pregnant. Can’t imagine the emotional rollercoaster from that.
