Todd Howard asked on-air why Bethesda didn't optimise Starfield for PC: 'We did [...] you may need to upgrade your PC'

Nah 60 is not good enough for me. I’m fine if it’s a mobile game or handheld. I have no problems getting 90 FPS minimum in A Plague Tale: Requiem and Cyberpunk 2077. In Starfield, not even 720p with lowest settings will help because the game is very heavily dependent on CPU. Looking at HW Unboxed benchmarks, the 5800X only managed to do 57 FPS average. You need a 7800X3D or a 13600K to get 90 FPS average.

Unions hail UK’s rail renationalisation bills as a return to ‘public service’

This is the best summary I could come up with: Rail unions have said Britain’s trains will be “run as a public service, not for private profit”, as the new government announced early steps to renationalise the railways in the king’s speech. The government said that public ownership would be the “default position” for train operators, while bus services could also be owned and controlled by local councils under other legislation. Avanti West Coast bosses were put on notice to improve performance in a meeting with the transport secretary, Louise Haigh, on Tuesday. A separate railways bill will establish GBR in a similar way to the reform proposed under the Conservatives in 2021, creating a “directing mind” running a “unified and simplified” rail system, with track and train managed by the same organisation. Some of rail’s immediate problems, including the industrial relations breakdown that has plagued Avanti and others, may be ameliorated by measures in Labour’s employment rights bill – marking a swift end to Conservative plans for minimum service levels during strikes. The better buses bill will extend franchising powers from metro mayors to all local authorities, and remove the bar on contracting municipal bus companies to operate routes. The original article contains 709 words, the summary contains 190 words. Saved 73%. I’m a bot and I’m open source!

[Vote] Should we defederate from maga.place?

And your first example is COVID, a plague which surely killed one hundred thousand more Americans because of right-wing disinformation. The COVID death rate was a bit all over the place. Florida was lower than California and New York, and Texas was between those two. New York and California had much more strict policies than Florida and Texas, yet they had a higher morality rate. Why? It’s not because masks don’t work when worn properly, it’s because epidemics are complicated. Maybe people in Texas and Florida got more exercise, maybe not wearing masks exposed people to smaller doses sooner so they got natural immunity sooner, or maybe it’s something else entirely. It’s a complex subject. I like how my state (Utah) handled it: short shutdown to gather info free testing centers businesses must accommodate 6’ distance schools offer online school at parents’ discretion We had a lot fewer restrictions than most areas, but there were enough to remind people that things weren’t completely normal. And I think it worked well! Utah had among the lowest deaths in the country, partly because of our high percentage of kids and because outdoor recreation stayed open (so people would recreate outside instead of inside with other people). THERE WAS A FAILED COUP That wasn’t because people bought the nonsense about the election, at least not directly. The people who showed up to the capitol and fought with the police there weren’t there because they were mad about the voting system, they were there because they wanted to start something, and this was a good enough excuse. They don’t represent the average conservative, these were far right groups looking for an excuse. Here’s an article about perception of the 2020/election: That’s very similar to Monmouth’s findings in the weeks after the 2020 election, when 18% of Republicans, 67% of independents and 95% of Democrats said Biden’s election victory was fair. That’s something like 60% believe it was fair weeks after the election. That’s pretty low, but I think there’s also a fair amount of less than truthful answers, such as people intentionally misinterpreting the question as whether Trump should’ve won, and of course the people who refuse to say one way or the other. So it wasn’t like all Republicans thought Biden rigged the election, it’s just a vocal minority who riled up enough of the quiet majority to answer a survey saying it was rigged to make it more than a blip.

Docking station for Linux (Lenovo ThinkPad T480s & Steam Deck)

https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/wiki/newdocks/ DisplayLink is not DisplayPort, avoid like the plague. Lenovo docks using this technology include “40AA”, “40A7”, “40A8” and the Hybrid dock “40AF”. So the 40AY looks like the best choice :) Thanks for your help! 40AY - ThinkPad Universal USB-C Dock Very similar to 40AS. USB C + MST dock and supports DisplayPort 1.4 and DSC. The charging capabilities are slightly improved - dock can provide up 65W with the standard 90W slim-tip brick, or up to 100W with a 135W or higher unit.

I know you mean well, so have an upvote. It’s true there is a setting in DuckDuckGo to select a region, or to leave it set on “all regions.” Unfortunately, it is functionally useless since I’ve confirmed that it does provide data tailored to my IP. In fact, not just my IP, but the name of my exact county and home town. The HTML fork does not have such a setting, but it was only more subtle about providing location-tailored results. At the end of the day, I can’t rely on it. Qwant doesn’t have such a setting, but at least it gets as general as “United States” (which would be fair enough for me – like you said, and it’s also occurred to me about searching in English – but searching English terms is also deliberate input from the user and would fall under the category of “keywords and syntax.”) However, Qwant does not simply provide US-based results, but actually targeted toward my exact location. I’m not aware of any setting in which I can change this. If you know of one, please let me know where to find it, because it’s not in the regular settings page. Kagi is the same as Qwant, but with the addition of an “international” setting. Again, it is non-functional since it persists in providing very specific results to my location. In fact, Kagi is one of the worst I’ve tried so far. It even presents the results in a style reminiscent of Google, including starred reviews and all. I find it ironic that I avoid toxic algorithms like the plague by not using Facebook or Twitter, yet I am seeing data manipulated by the very search engines I use every day. There’s got to be some obscure old-school search engine out there that works like they did in the 90s, right?

RFK Jr. attacked the CDC’s ‘fascism’ and likened vaccinating children to abuse by the Catholic Church

Countries with more efficient governments lose fewer lives than countries with less efficient governments. But also more open countries lose more lives than more closed countries. And authoritarian countries, other things equal, lose fewer lives. This means that structures that immobilize small power, but not big power, and have better infrastructure for big power, are encouraged. Thus corporations with oligarchic ambitions are, yes, interested in big pandemics. A bit like Hanseatic cities and other such unions became much stronger after European populations shrinking from plague. Except then it would also lead to servitude becoming softer and less normal, because of shortage of hands. Our current world does not have that shortage. No pandemic will bring it. Maybe a nuclear war and planetary hunger. This is a level higher. Modern nation states are being dismantled slowly. We will have that cyberpunk dystopia, but as always, it will be different from what’s been predicted. There will be genocide, and there will be nationalism, and there will be death squadrons, and there will be militant marxist groups, and there will be mafia organizations. I mean, they all already exist, it’s just that 90s worldview was a rare period of truthful representation of reality in public perception, where we felt how huge the world is. Now it’s glossy bullshit again.

Russia tests cutting itself off from the rest of the internet

Of course they have basic utilities in the Balkans. They had it in Yugoslavia and then they were demolished in the wars. The modern states are hobbled by debt accrued during the rebuild and still plagued by border violence. There’s no single interstate grid, the highway system is littered with checkpoints and blockades, and the disparate countries have lost their pre-collapse industrial capacity to the bombings of the 90s. I’ve travelled to every single Balkan country this past year, including Kosovo and Montenegro, as part of a border police exchange program, and enjoyed my stay at all of them. Then I’m sure you stopped off at Obrovac Aluminum Plant and Obrenovac Thermal Power Plant, critical backbones of the old economy that were never fully repaired, much less reintegrated into the regional economies. Perhaps you had a ride in one of the surviving locally manufactured automobiles, once a common export of the region but now functionally impossible to assemble due to the fractured political landscape? What were you policing in this now peaceful and bountiful utopia, btw? Crime, I’m sure, is way down from the Tito era, right? And arms smuggling? That’s not a thing anymore, is it? At this point I’m convinced you’ve never travelled to or studied the history and national policies of the countries you’re talking about Sure. You played cops and robbers in Kosovo for a few weeks and now you’re an expert. I just spent half a decade at a hedge fund, watching my bosses pick Eastern Europe clean, asset by asset and industry by industry. You’re so smart, bro. You should write a book about your experiences.

Has the Cold War ended?

@tomasz I initially read “How has the Cold War ended?” and I was just writing a very long answer explaining the pitfalls of communism and the whole process, but now I re-read your question. Well, good question. I am always wondering. I do not think the Cold War ended entirely. As the Cold War was a war fought for the minds and spirits of people, I believe that without a change of mindset, this war cannot be ended easily. The '90s-2000s period was a great period of time, which showed that world collaboration can help us put an end to our problems. However, many people, especially politicians, are still locked into the mentality of confrontation that plagued our world until 1980’s-90’s. You might instantly think of Vladimir Putin and the Russian elite, who feel that somehow the West is invading them. However, in his autobiography, Lech Wałęsa was also telling how he, as the president of Poland, struggled to convince the West that it is in its best interest to turn its attention to the former Soviet block, and regard these states as partners, rather than a bunch of states that should be punished for being forcefully sided with their evil (the USSR). I think that when enough important people will start seeing collaboration as a way to solve their problems rather than flexing their muscles, then the Cold War will truly make its way to the history books in it’s entirety.
