JAKARTA — Climate change has become a direct threat to the survival of the world’s rarest great ape, according to scientists, after landslides triggered by an unusually intense storm killed an estimated 58 critically endangered Tapanuli orangutans (Pongo tapanuliensis) in Indonesia’s Batang Toru ecosystem. The estimate comes from a new study published in Current Biology, whose authors say the findings may represent one of the first examples of climate change immediately threatening the survival of an entire species. The researchers found that landslides triggered by extreme rainfall associated with Cyclone Senyar in November 2025 likely killed about 7% of the estimated global population of Tapanuli orangutans, which number fewer than 800 individuals and are concentrated in the Batang Toru landscape in North Sumatra. After analyzing satellite imagery, the researchers identified more than 50,000 individual landslide scars and estimated that about 8,300 hectares (20,500 acres) of forest in the western block of Batang Toru were affected by the disaster. The western block is considered the species’ most important stronghold, hosting more than 500 orangutans and one of the three known population clusters within the Batang Toru landscape. The researchers believe most orangutans caught in the landslides died rather than being displaced because of the violence and speed of the event. While the landslides were relatively shallow, they moved extremely rapidly and transformed into channelized debris flows. With little or no warning, orangutans and other wildlife likely had little chance of escaping and may have been buried, drowned or fatally injured by…This article was originally published on Mongabay From Conservation news via This RSS Feed.

Following a grueling 14-day trek, a team of mountaineers and conservationists has photographed the elusive blue-fronted lorikeet in the highlands of eastern Indonesia’s Buru Island. This is only the second photographed record of the parrot in more than 100 years, according to bird conservation groups. The blue-fronted lorikeet (Charmosynopsis toxopei) is a small species found only in the island of Buru. The bird, which has a lime-green plumage, an orange beak and a pointed tail, was first identified from seven museum specimens collected in the 1920s. The avian species went undetected despite surveys conducted in the lowland and mid-elevation forests they’re described from, until it was photographed in 2014 by Craig Robson during a birding tour, according to the Search for Lost Birds project, a global partnership between the NGOs American Bird Conservancy (ABC), Re:wild and BirdLife International. In April 2026, Indonesian mountaineering group Kanal Buru, which included researchers from ABC, Birdtour Asia and Yayasan Planet Indonesia, led an expedition in Buru. They scaled the limestone terrain of Mount Kapalatmada in the west of the island to reach a 2,700meter (8,900-foot) summit cloud forest and successfully photographed the parrot. The team also captured its high-pitched calls for the first time. “We noticed two small birds fly into a nearby tree so I picked up my binoculars to see what one of them was,” John C. Mittermeier, director of the Search for Lost Birds at ABC and part of the expedition, said in a statement by the ABC. “I short-circuited with…This article was originally published on Mongabay From Conservation news via This RSS Feed.

Senegal 1 is pretty much playing Senegal 2 right now. For anyone wondering: a lot of the Cape Verde players are Dutch, as are most from Curaçao (which is technically still part of the Dutch Kingdom). Indonesia and Suriname would also have been not they didn’t qualify. Then there’s Dean Huijsen from Spain but I think he’s injured right now.

World Cup status update for the 13th and today: The great satan had its first match on the 13th vs Paraguay winning 4-1 showing the world they are an ok 5/10 at the sport, then in the other 2 matches it was both draws with the arab countries of Brazil vs Morroco and The battle of the slave states in Swiss vs Qatar, both the swiss and brazillians did bad because they are supposed to be good at ball game, in my opinion at least then today we had most of the burning-flag countries matches, first was Haiti vs Scotland with the scots winning 1-0 (btw haiti was forced once again to changed their uniform in an international sport because it made the angry), Then it was Germany vs Curazao with the showing us their deep evil and winning 7-1 vs a country that entered their first world cup. Then it was Japan vs Netherlands (the loser pays Indonesia reparations) but it was a draw 2-2, it was good game tho. Also beat Turkey 2-0. the marches for the 15th started too, with Ecuador vs Ivory coast (Ivory coast won 1-0) and ring now is Sweden vs Tunesia, the swedes look like their are going to win since they are 2-0 with 38 minutes right now The Protests against Sheinbaum still continue, but they havent disrupted the games yet, the oppositions still tries and fails to co op them. and Mexican fans are teaching Koreans swear words in spanish so they scream them at the referees during their matches oh yea i lost the tweet but there was a mexican fan that did a racist gesture to a korean fan and he was doxxed and fired from his job by mexican fans so that was cool

China’s labour force was much more attractive to the West than India’s Yes, more attractive, absolutely. But that does not mean imperialism uniquely depended on China or would have failed to restructure without it. China was attractive because of the material gains of the revolutionary period: literacy, health, infrastructure, social stability, and an organised labour force. The revolution is also why China could absorb foreign capital in a more disciplined and strategic way than most dependent countries. If China had stayed closed, capital would not have given up; it would have shifted more aggressively into India, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Mexico, the Philippines, etc. Maybe less efficiently, but it would still have found cheap labour and resources. The difference is that those countries were not going to turn that integration into the kind of industrial, technological, and geopolitical counterweight China has become. It all feels very much like a semantics debate more than any disagreement over reality to me I think there is a real disagreement here. If the KKE model only meant “all countries exist within the current world-system dominated by imperial hegemony,” then fine, that is basically just a less clear version of core/periphery analysis. But the problem is that it goes further and labels all “capitalist states” as imperialist to some degree. This very much blurs the difference between participation in the current world system and domination within that system. The Congo is part of the global capitalist system, but as an oppressed and plundered country, not as an imperialist country “lower down the pyramid.” Imperialism is not simply capitalism, commodity production, or even some outward capital flows. It is a concrete relation of domination: monopoly capital, finance capital, unequal exchange, military pressure, sanctions, comprador mediation, and the extraction of value from oppressed nations. A peripheral country can have capitalists, a bourgeois state, and even limited regional interests without being imperialist. With the KKE model distinction between oppressor and oppressed nations gets flattened into a mere ranking system which weakens the analysis. The pyramid model turns qualitative relations into quantitative gradations, as if an exploited peasant is just a landlord at the bottom of the landlord pyramid. The core/periphery model preserves the actual antagonism: the core dominates, the periphery is dominated, and the semi-periphery occupies a contradictory position. Without these clear distinctions anti-imperialism turns into abstract denunciation of all “capitalist states” rather than concrete analysis of who is extracting value, who is being subordinated, and which contradictions weaken the imperial core. While denouncing all “capitalist states” seems revolutionary, it is not a useful tool for analysis. Not to mind the issues of truly defining what states are capitalist and which are not. I put “capitalist state” in quotation marks because I think the KKE’s method of classification, and the similar approach taken by many ultra-leftists, Trotskyites, etc., is deeply flawed. In the KKE’s case especially, China for example is often disqualified as socialist by treating the existence of markets, private capital, commodity production, or integration into the world economy as sufficient proof that the state itself has become capitalist. But this is a mechanical and formalistic definition. The class character of a state is not determined by isolating one economic form from the whole social formation. A capitalist state does not become socialist simply because it has state-owned enterprises, public land, welfare measures, or planning mechanisms. Likewise, a socialist state does not automatically become capitalist because it makes controlled use of markets, private capital, or capitalist mechanisms, provided political power remains under communist party leadership and these mechanisms are subordinated to socialist construction, national development, and class struggle.
Food packaging ranks among the top plastic pollutants littering the world’s coastlines, a new study confirms. The study, published May 20 in the journal One Earth, analyzed data from 112 nations, including 5,300 shoreline litter surveys, to produce the first global index of macroplastic pollution by usage type. Based on 355 peer-reviewed studies, it found that food and beverage plastics were the most common litter type for 93% of the countries surveyed. Within that category, food packaging, caps and lids, and plastic bottles were the most consistently found items, appearing as the top three across more than half of surveyed countries. This included the world’s five most populous countries: China, India, the United States, Indonesia and Pakistan. Plastic bags and cigarettes followed as the next most prevalent categories. The study’s lead author, Max Richard Kelly of the University of Plymouth in the U.K, said he was not surprised by the volume of food and beverage plastics on beaches but was struck by similarities in the surveyed countries. “Seeing the exact pattern replicated across the vast majority of nations was a stark reminder of the true scale of crisis we are facing,” he told Mongabay in an email. The 1950 invasion was a military annexation by the PLA, not a domestic Marxist uprising. Tibet wasn’t militarily annexed in 1950, because it was never officially independent. It was annexed in 1720 by the Qing Dynasty and only briefly splintered into an autocratic theocracy during the civil war. Indonesians chose English for global trade while maintaining their state language. Tibetans face structural coercion You must be joking. Which Fortune 500 companies allow you to speak Indonesian exclusively? Tibetan is dying out as a language because the Tibetan nationalists never bothered to build up educational infrastructure when they were in charge.

it assumes Chinese imperialism was necessary to defeudalize Tibet It assumes Chinese Maoists aided Tibetan communists in their overthrow of the brutal theocracy that governed the country to date. Certainly possible this could have happened another way, in the same way you might argue the US could have revolted against England without the help of France. But the idea that Chinese integration with Tibet constitutes “imperialism” presumes China’s economy is parasitic - leeching resources, robbing land, and press ganging laborers for the benefit of Beijing. None of that is in evidence. Just the contrary. China and Tibet have been engaged in reciprocal mutual aid, to the benefit of both regions. Most importantly, it doesn’t justify forced sinicization Capital improvements being reframed as “forced sinicization” is just American agitprop. The Chinese government is extending education as an amenity to a province that lacked it. The Tibetans are learning Mandarin because it benefits them to speak fluently with their wealthy neighbors. For the same reason Indonesians learn English and Italians learn German, Tibetans are learning Mandarin.

❗️US blocks Palestinian football chief from World Cup in global visa crackdown ::: spoiler Expand The US government has denied an entry visa to Jibril Rajoub, the head of the Palestinian Football Association, preventing the accredited FIFA delegate from attending World Cup matches on US soil. Rajoub, who watched the tournament’s opening match in Mexico City, condemned the ban as a politically motivated restriction on global sports representatives. The decision comes just weeks after Rajoub rejected a request by FIFA President Gianni Infantino to shake hands with the head of the Israeli football federation, stating that the gesture would merely whitewash Tel Aviv’s unlawful actions. Washington’s targeting of the Palestinian official reflects a broader pattern of severe travel restrictions overshadowing the tournament, which is being co-hosted by the US, Canada, and Mexico. A significant number of accredited international delegates, journalists, and athletes have faced arbitrary bans. Among those targeted are Somalia’s 2025 African referee of the year, Omar Abdulkadir Artan, who was denied entry despite holding a valid State Department visa, and members of the Iraqi national delegation, who were subjected to a seven-hour detention at a Chicago airport. Numerous media professionals from Iran and various African nations have also been denied the necessary multi-entry visas. Further compounding the geopolitical friction, Washington abruptly revoked Iran’s official eight percent ticket allocation just days before the tournament kicked off, disrupting travel plans for thousands of fans. Simultaneously, the Department of Homeland Security confirmed the deployment of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents inside US stadiums, drawing fierce condemnation from over 120 civil rights groups. While FIFA claimed it cannot interfere in domestic immigration policies, critics have pointed out the double standard, noting that FIFA stripped Indonesia of the Under-20 World Cup in 2023 when local officials protested Israeli participation. ::: https://t.me/thecradlemedia/61834

How long before Palestinians and the media understand that declaring people as martyrs wins them zero sympathy? The word martyr has very specific and negative religious connotations. Anyone using this language is likely a threat to secular society and government. former prime minister John Howard — long associated with a hardline stance on immigration and border control Howard was the one to open the floodgates for immigration to Australia. Any other view of his policies is entirely revisionist. Indonesia is tackling an ambitious energy challenge: replacing diesel generators across 17,000 islands with solar and batteries. The price tag? $2.5-3.4 billion. But it pays for itself in just 3-6 years through reduced fuel costs and emissions. The key insight: treat this like Lego blocks, not custom engineering. Build repeatable systems that can scale, driving down costs and accelerating the renewable transition.
